CV: Dr. Mark A. Trebble, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Affiliation: Head of Process Engineering with Sea NG Corporation Ltd.
Areas of Expertise:
• Process Simulation
• Gas Processing
• Natural Gas Liquids Extraction
• Cryogenic Processing and LNG Technology
• Equations of State/Thermodynamics
Career Overview:
I graduated with distinction as a Chemical Engineer in 1981 and joined Stearns-Roger (a
high profile Engineering Procurement and Design Company) where I was trained in gas
plant design and cryogenic ethane extraction. I returned to university in 1983, completing a
Ph.D. in 1986 in the area of thermodynamics, and developed the Trebble-Bishnoi equation
of state. I joined the University of Calgary subsequent to my graduation and was promoted
to full professor in 1996. I served on the UC Faculty undergraduate curriculum committee
for almost 15 years and was Associate Dean of undergraduate studies at the department
level from 1995-1999.
I moved to Curtin University in March of 2006 as Associate Professor and was promoted to
Professor in the position of the Western Australia Energy Research Alliance (WAERA) Gas
Technology Program Leader four months later for a four year term. I took an Adjunct
position at Curtin in January of 2010 which expired in December of 2012 and am now
involved in independent consultancy. I have published 38 journal papers and have
supervised 20 graduate students. My research group has measured some interesting data
including heavy hydrocarbon solubilities, mass transfer rates in systems of heavy
hydrocarbons in contact with supercritical CO2 and ethane, diffusivities in CO2-hydrocarbon
systems, foaming in amine systems, CO2 freezing in natural gas systems, and cryogenic
PSA applications. .
I have worked as an independent consultant to the gas processing industry for over 30
years primarily in the areas of gas processing and cryogenic hydrocarbon liquid
extraction. I hold patents in four countries in the area of gas processing and have several
applications running in commercial facilities.
My most recent work has been with Sea NG, a company involved in pioneering
commercial compressed natural gas (CNG) transport. We have undertaken pilot plant
testing, dynamic simulation, and a thorough process development which is complicated
by issues associated with marine transport. Work on a number of projects has proceeded
to Pre Feed which is very encouraging and points to an initial industrial application in the
near future.
Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae
Industrial Work Experience:
1991 - Present President of T&T Consulting Ltd. (479711 AB LTD).
I have operated my own engineering consulting company since 1991
and have worked on a variety of industrial projects highlighted
below:
2004 - Present Head of Process Engineering for Sea NG. Responsible for design of
shore facilities for all compressed natural gas (CNG) shipping
facility proposals. Pilot plant testing for thermal transients observed
during coselle filling and emptying. Simulation of all aspects of gas
processing and conditioning surrounding the technology.
2013 – Present Consulting Engineer for AltaGas on several projects at the
Harmattan, JEEP, and Gordondale facilities including plant
modifications relating to the cryogenic recovery of ethane, heat
recovery systems, amine units, and heavy hydrocarbon separation
and refining systems.
1998 – 2013 Rating and engineering modifications at the Taylor gas plant which
processes 650 MMscfd. I designed plant modifications to
accommodate flow increases and richer feed. My first patent has
also been installed in two of the cryogenic trains at this facility.
Ethane recovery was increased by roughly 10% as a result of the
patent implementation.
2009 – 2010 Consultant to Mistral energy for the design of ethane extraction and
fractionation facilities as well as a waste heat recovery project.
1992 - 2005 Straddle plant evaluation and optimization at the Cochrane
Extraction plant (near Calgary) which extracts ethane and NGL from
2.5 Bcfd of transmission line natural gas. I have conducted
numerous plant performance tests and Hysys plant ratings for the
entire plant and have completed detailed process engineering for
modifications in the following areas: refrigerated oil absorption
plant, cryogenic ethane extraction trains, deethanization, amine
sweetening, food grade CO2 production unit, refrigeration units
(Freon and Propane), and recompression. My first patent has been
installed in all three cryogenic units at the plant. Developed a
procedure for taking DCS data directly into a Hysys simulation so
that on-line performance testing could be done routinely.
1997 - 2005 Simulation and plant modifications for several very large ethane
extraction facilities in Empress Alberta (total capacity of all plants in
excess of 6 Bcfd). I performed front end engineering for the Empress
5 facility and have studied modifications to allow higher ethane
recovery at several of the Empress plants including Empress 1, 2, 4,
5 and the Petro-Canada plant.
1999 – 2005 I did the complete front-end process engineering for the JEEP facility
which extracts ethane from the fuel gas used at the JOFFRE
polyethylene plant (roughly 195 MMscfd). This design was
challenging since the company purchased an existing set of
equipment that was designed for a different location and we had to
rerate all of the existing equipment to ensure its applicability for the
JEEP plant. My second patent (DOR) is operational at this facility.
2004 – 2005 Design of the Tabnak facility in Iran which processes 1.6 Bcfd in two
trains. I did the simulations and detailed engineering for the slug
catcher, the inlet stabilization unit, the ethane extraction trains, the
inlet molecular sieve, the inlet gas chilling, the fractionation plant,
the refrigeration system and the NGL refrigerated storage facility.
1998 – 1999 Design work for the Suncor olefins project which recovers liquids
from a hydrogen rich gas containing substantial amounts of ethylene
and propylene.
1997 – 1998 Process simulation and design on the Venezuelan ACCRO project
for TCPL. Project included two 400 MMscfd NGL extraction units
and a 50000 bbl/d NGL fractionation plant.
1995 - 1998 Thermodynamic modelling, engineering design, and rating of
formaldehyde plants for CalPolymers, Pocatello, ID, USA.
1997 Consultant to Delta Engineering on the ARCO project in Qatar. My
work focused on cryogenic processing and utilities.
1995 Simulation of a process to produce LNG at an ethane extraction plant
1991 - 1992 Consultant for Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. overseeing an
experimental laboratory set-up and dynamic reactor modelling of a
moving bed magnesium oxide chlorinator.
1990 - 1991 Independent consultant for the Magnesium Company of Canada
(MagCan). I worked on the calcination and chlorination reactor
design, the Wellman CO generator and the gas cleaning operation. I
was able to find a solution to a year long plant start-up bottleneck by
simulating the moving bed reactor and developing an alternative
reactor start-up procedure.
1988 - 1990 Consultant for Delta Engineering. Gas plant and ethane extraction
facility design. Process audit of the Caroline Gas Plant.
1988 Development of a program for PetroCanada to simulate temperature
profiles in an oil producing well during hot oil dewaxing.
1987 - 1988 Development work for Hyprotech including the introduction of the
Trebble-Bishnoi equation of state into the C release, interaction
parameter regression programs, data bases for pure components, and
evaluation of binary interaction parameters.
1981 - 1983 Process Engineer with Stearns-Roger. Two years design experience
in ethane extraction and gas plants. Responsibilities included process
inception, simulation, PFD and P&ID development, sizing, data
sheet preparation and control systems.
1980 Summer Student Engineer in Training, Suncor Rosevear Gas Plant, Edson,
Alberta. Several plant projects were undertaken including a rating of
the amine sweetening unit and the molecular sieve dehydration unit.

Trebble CV 2016

  • 1. CV: Dr. Mark A. Trebble, Ph.D., P.Eng. Affiliation: Head of Process Engineering with Sea NG Corporation Ltd. Areas of Expertise: • Process Simulation • Gas Processing • Natural Gas Liquids Extraction • Cryogenic Processing and LNG Technology • Equations of State/Thermodynamics Career Overview: I graduated with distinction as a Chemical Engineer in 1981 and joined Stearns-Roger (a high profile Engineering Procurement and Design Company) where I was trained in gas plant design and cryogenic ethane extraction. I returned to university in 1983, completing a Ph.D. in 1986 in the area of thermodynamics, and developed the Trebble-Bishnoi equation of state. I joined the University of Calgary subsequent to my graduation and was promoted to full professor in 1996. I served on the UC Faculty undergraduate curriculum committee for almost 15 years and was Associate Dean of undergraduate studies at the department level from 1995-1999. I moved to Curtin University in March of 2006 as Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in the position of the Western Australia Energy Research Alliance (WAERA) Gas Technology Program Leader four months later for a four year term. I took an Adjunct position at Curtin in January of 2010 which expired in December of 2012 and am now involved in independent consultancy. I have published 38 journal papers and have supervised 20 graduate students. My research group has measured some interesting data including heavy hydrocarbon solubilities, mass transfer rates in systems of heavy hydrocarbons in contact with supercritical CO2 and ethane, diffusivities in CO2-hydrocarbon systems, foaming in amine systems, CO2 freezing in natural gas systems, and cryogenic PSA applications. . I have worked as an independent consultant to the gas processing industry for over 30 years primarily in the areas of gas processing and cryogenic hydrocarbon liquid extraction. I hold patents in four countries in the area of gas processing and have several applications running in commercial facilities. My most recent work has been with Sea NG, a company involved in pioneering commercial compressed natural gas (CNG) transport. We have undertaken pilot plant testing, dynamic simulation, and a thorough process development which is complicated by issues associated with marine transport. Work on a number of projects has proceeded to Pre Feed which is very encouraging and points to an initial industrial application in the near future.
  • 2. Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae Industrial Work Experience: 1991 - Present President of T&T Consulting Ltd. (479711 AB LTD). I have operated my own engineering consulting company since 1991 and have worked on a variety of industrial projects highlighted below: 2004 - Present Head of Process Engineering for Sea NG. Responsible for design of shore facilities for all compressed natural gas (CNG) shipping facility proposals. Pilot plant testing for thermal transients observed during coselle filling and emptying. Simulation of all aspects of gas processing and conditioning surrounding the technology. 2013 – Present Consulting Engineer for AltaGas on several projects at the Harmattan, JEEP, and Gordondale facilities including plant modifications relating to the cryogenic recovery of ethane, heat recovery systems, amine units, and heavy hydrocarbon separation and refining systems. 1998 – 2013 Rating and engineering modifications at the Taylor gas plant which processes 650 MMscfd. I designed plant modifications to accommodate flow increases and richer feed. My first patent has also been installed in two of the cryogenic trains at this facility. Ethane recovery was increased by roughly 10% as a result of the patent implementation. 2009 – 2010 Consultant to Mistral energy for the design of ethane extraction and fractionation facilities as well as a waste heat recovery project. 1992 - 2005 Straddle plant evaluation and optimization at the Cochrane Extraction plant (near Calgary) which extracts ethane and NGL from 2.5 Bcfd of transmission line natural gas. I have conducted numerous plant performance tests and Hysys plant ratings for the entire plant and have completed detailed process engineering for modifications in the following areas: refrigerated oil absorption plant, cryogenic ethane extraction trains, deethanization, amine sweetening, food grade CO2 production unit, refrigeration units (Freon and Propane), and recompression. My first patent has been installed in all three cryogenic units at the plant. Developed a procedure for taking DCS data directly into a Hysys simulation so that on-line performance testing could be done routinely.
  • 3. 1997 - 2005 Simulation and plant modifications for several very large ethane extraction facilities in Empress Alberta (total capacity of all plants in excess of 6 Bcfd). I performed front end engineering for the Empress 5 facility and have studied modifications to allow higher ethane recovery at several of the Empress plants including Empress 1, 2, 4, 5 and the Petro-Canada plant. 1999 – 2005 I did the complete front-end process engineering for the JEEP facility which extracts ethane from the fuel gas used at the JOFFRE polyethylene plant (roughly 195 MMscfd). This design was challenging since the company purchased an existing set of equipment that was designed for a different location and we had to rerate all of the existing equipment to ensure its applicability for the JEEP plant. My second patent (DOR) is operational at this facility. 2004 – 2005 Design of the Tabnak facility in Iran which processes 1.6 Bcfd in two trains. I did the simulations and detailed engineering for the slug catcher, the inlet stabilization unit, the ethane extraction trains, the inlet molecular sieve, the inlet gas chilling, the fractionation plant, the refrigeration system and the NGL refrigerated storage facility. 1998 – 1999 Design work for the Suncor olefins project which recovers liquids from a hydrogen rich gas containing substantial amounts of ethylene and propylene. 1997 – 1998 Process simulation and design on the Venezuelan ACCRO project for TCPL. Project included two 400 MMscfd NGL extraction units and a 50000 bbl/d NGL fractionation plant. 1995 - 1998 Thermodynamic modelling, engineering design, and rating of formaldehyde plants for CalPolymers, Pocatello, ID, USA. 1997 Consultant to Delta Engineering on the ARCO project in Qatar. My work focused on cryogenic processing and utilities. 1995 Simulation of a process to produce LNG at an ethane extraction plant 1991 - 1992 Consultant for Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. overseeing an experimental laboratory set-up and dynamic reactor modelling of a moving bed magnesium oxide chlorinator. 1990 - 1991 Independent consultant for the Magnesium Company of Canada (MagCan). I worked on the calcination and chlorination reactor design, the Wellman CO generator and the gas cleaning operation. I was able to find a solution to a year long plant start-up bottleneck by
  • 4. simulating the moving bed reactor and developing an alternative reactor start-up procedure. 1988 - 1990 Consultant for Delta Engineering. Gas plant and ethane extraction facility design. Process audit of the Caroline Gas Plant. 1988 Development of a program for PetroCanada to simulate temperature profiles in an oil producing well during hot oil dewaxing. 1987 - 1988 Development work for Hyprotech including the introduction of the Trebble-Bishnoi equation of state into the C release, interaction parameter regression programs, data bases for pure components, and evaluation of binary interaction parameters. 1981 - 1983 Process Engineer with Stearns-Roger. Two years design experience in ethane extraction and gas plants. Responsibilities included process inception, simulation, PFD and P&ID development, sizing, data sheet preparation and control systems. 1980 Summer Student Engineer in Training, Suncor Rosevear Gas Plant, Edson, Alberta. Several plant projects were undertaken including a rating of the amine sweetening unit and the molecular sieve dehydration unit.
