2. As the major character within the film, Jake
will be in the majority of scenes, including
the shots with his family, gang members and
during raids. Following conventions of other
films, the film follows Brandon, and he is the
most seen character.
We decided that as Brandon moves to a poor
area and his family begin to suffer financially,
he needs to be dressed in more rundown and
scruffy clothes. Jake had some old clothes we
thought would be effective, including baggy
trousers and a balaclava which is an effective
link to other action or crime films. This
appeals to the conventions of alternative
films such as Harry Brown, as gang members
are often seen with balaclava’s on.

We also sampled Jake in smarter clothes to
follow the connotations of a more upper
class character, who usually wears shirts or
smart trousers. Because of this contrast with
the gang clothing, we can create a character
subversion as Jake can be seen in the film
dressed in both.
Typically leading males in action films do not
wear makeup, or appear to not wear
makeup. We follow this convention, and
Jake’s character does not wear any. His
natural look is effective for his role, and he
does not need to look a different age. A
character in Jakes role would not wear any
makeup.
Brandon
3. Jan plays a small role within the film trailer,
and therefore during the filming process, she
is not needed as often as other characters
such as Jake. However, her emotional role
within the film is key, as we build upon this,
and how her emotions lead her to drugs and
Brandon has to work with drugs to pay off his
mums debt.
Due to Jan's availability to appear in the film,
her wardrobe is simply casual clothing.
However as she is seen in the film to be
struggling with drugs and alcohol, scruffy old
clothes will be effective in portraying this
struggle.

Makeup
Jan
Similar to the wardrobe, makeup will be
simple, or possibly non existent to give a
natural look. Scruffy makeup could suggest
her struggle with drugs and alcohol, and how
her appearance is no longer an important
factor in her life.
4. Ryan's role within the film is a junior member
of the gang. He doesn’t have much authority,
however it is revealed within the film that he
is the one who killed Brandon’s brother. He is
a subversion of a typical gang member, as he
does not look as rough as gang conventions.
However, we wanted to portray him this way
to create a contrast, and suggest that some
gang members are not in gangs because they
want to be, but for other reasons, which is
also true of Brandon.
Character Role
Wardrobe Development
His wardrobe is mostly scruffy and rough
clothes to help support the characters
portrayal as a member of a youth gang.
However, in some scenes, Ryan’s clothing
could suggest that he is somewhat out of
place, such as casual shirts or expensive
shoes.
Makeup
Ryan
Typically, characters within the action genre
do not wear makeup, unless to show injury.
We are following this convention, and will
simply use the actor’s natural appearance.
Ryan’s age is similar to that of the actors age,
and therefore no altercations are necessary.
5. Dan is Brandon’s younger brother, and his
role is key at the beginning of the film and
trailer. He is shown to be killed by an
unknown gang member. The storyline then
follows Brandon’s progression in his new life
in a new home without his brother. He will
be needed to be filmed playing with Brandon
to show a happy life before his death, and
draw a picture that Brandon can carry around
with him.
Dan needs to appear younger than he is (14).
Various methods are available to us in order
to make Dan appear younger. By dressing
him in old clothes of mine, we were able to
show him looking younger than he is, in a
blue and white childlike shirt. Props are also
key in this representation, and to create a
concept of innocence, we will have Dan
playing with toy cars and drawing a picture,
so that empathy is created after his death.

Dan
Although Dan needs to appear younger than
he is, due to the type of shots that will be
used, no makeup altercations will be
necessary. We thought that he looked young
enough in costume without further changes.
6. Both Alex and Ben play gang members within
the film. Although Ben’s role in particular is
small, their representation is key, so that the
audience can associate the characters as
gang members. They will take part in gang
fights and drug operations, as well as the rain
on Brandon’s house.
Character Role
Wardrobe Development
Wardrobe will typically be hoodies and
scruffy clothes, similar to Ben. However, they
are a typical representation of British youth
gang members or ‘chavs’ so branded items
are still used for costume. A variety of
different hoodies can be effective in giving
the trailer a greater level of depth and
contrast to show more scenes with gang
members in, particularly violent ones, which
audience members will find exciting.
