We chose Jack for the leading role in our films opening
sequence playing the character of ‘Jimmy.’ We chose him
above other actors we had considered because we felt he
would be an easily changeable person when moving from
jimmy in the game to jimmy in his own room. We chose Jack
also due to his confidence skills when acting as we felt he
would easily be able to take on the role and could interact with
others with ease. When choosing Jack we looked at whether
he could
portray some of the generic conventions of a romantic comedy
film. We felt he could create a feeling of being a narrow
minded character, but convey from the beginning of the film
the ability to be opened up to a new way of life from the
woman of his dreams. When considering the outfits worn by
the character, we chose very opposing ideas for each
scene, this was because we wanted to connote to the audience
that Jimmy’s dream life and Jimmy’s real life are very
different, and the dream he lives in is the way he wishes he
could truly live. We also felt that wearing a suit in the game
world would convey a sense of intelligence and
sophistication, showing that he finds it easy to lie and bend the
truth to create a reality that he feels comfortable in. This also
insinuates confidence issues in the character and a need to
hide his true life away. This could possibly be due to a fear of
abandonment if they knew who he truly was, this would be
extremely upsetting for the character as he feels that
Cheekygirlxoxo is the girl of his dreams.
We chose Jamie Richmond for the character of
‘Cheekygirlxoxo’ as we felt she would easily be able to
take on the role due to her drama experience. We felt her
looks matched what we would be looking for in a female
lead of a romantic comedy. This was due to her being of a
relatable age to our target audience, therefore meeting
the romantic comedy convention of relating to our target
audience and showing them a situation that would be
considered down to earth. We also chose her as a leading
female character as we felt she would be able to portray
the charismatic personality seen in many romantic
comedy films.
When considering the outfit that we would use for
Jamie’s character we felt colour would be very important
in foreshadowing a lot about the character when in the
opening sequence she will say very little. When choosing
the colour of her dress we first considered
white, however the dress later changed to be the colour
cream. We felt that using the colour white would suggest
innocence and purity in the character, yet as we wanted
to insinuate that the character may be hiding something
that we don’t see from the beginning we chose a more
off-white colour, which connotes that her innocence
wasn’t true or couldn’t be trusted. We wanted to put a
bow around her dress and we considered using the colour
red on it too connote danger from the character, yet the
use of a bow itself suggests a childlike nature.
We chose Nick for the final role in our opening
sequence as the father of the character of Jimmy. We
felt he would work well as this character due to the
close friendship between himself and Jack, and
therefore would be able to portray a long-lasting
father/son relationship within the piece. We also felt
that Nick would work well as the father because he
would be able to easily convey a comedic personality.
This was very important too us because we wanted the
father to play a big role in the comedic aspect of the
film. When considering his character, we looked a lot at
Eugene Levy, who played the character of Jim’s dad in
American Pie. This is because we liked the awkward yet
still closely bonded relationship within the film, and we
felt it would help us to accomplish the convention of
creating a realistic character. When considering the
outfit that the Nicks character would wear it was
debatable whether he should dress casually or in a
more formal manner. Finally we decided that he would
be still wearing his work outfit when he enters into the
scene, he will wear a shirt and tie to suggest a well paid
and formal job, but his top will be slightly untucked
around his waist, to suggest he has been busy working
all day. We felt this outfit would also be important to
showing a difference in age between his character and
Jacks.
