2. 1. HOW DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
3. MUSIC VIDEO: DYER’S THEORY OF
ABSENT PRESENCE (USE/DEVELOP)
This convention is often featured within the synthpop genre and the technique is in the
name. Dyer’s Theory is a technique where a video displays no performer and it has some
sort of effect on the viewer. We implemented this technique in at the start at it draws the
viewer in nicely to start watching the music video. However, we only use this once in the
music video as we felt like it wasn’t necessary due to us wanting to predominantly feature
the performer as we wanted to go with an indie feel where they tend to show the performer
over anything else to expose their USP’s and overall image as an artist.
In the original music
video by Passion Pit,
they implement this by
using strobe lighting. In
parts of the music video
the strobe lighting will
happen and the
performer will be in a
different position when
they come back on.
4. MUSIC VIDEO: STYLISTIC
ELEMENTS (USE/DEVELOP)
When making the music video, me and my group implemented a wide range of effects
that would come across as stylistic. The key example of this within my video would be
the water lighting. The water lighting creates a very stylistic effect due to it’s motion and
the different colours that it displays throughout the music video. Near towards the end
we also added smoke cloud effects by using water vapour. By using this instead of a
smoke/fog machine it allowed us to keep the rest of the shot fairly visible. We also
added silhouette techniques to the video in order to further indicate the stylistic
elements that are being displayed. In contrast to other synthpop music videos, this is a
little bit different as it holds less psychedelic vibes but creates a new spin on what
already exists.
5. MAGAZINE ADVERT:
GRAPHIC DESIGNS (USE)
Many magazine adverts that
showcase a music artist usually
incorporate graphic designs within
their work. In our magazine advert,
we felt that it was necessary to go all
out on graphic designs as it would
be able to reinforce the genre of the
song that we chose and gives a clear
understanding to the audience of
what the artists image is. Before
creating this, I looked at 1980s album
covers as I wanted to get inspiration
from that for the obvious reason that
our song is about that period in time.
We noticed many of them included
these different neon coloured shapes
in the back, so that was something
that we thought would both indicate
the 1980s aspect and synthpop.
That’s also the reason as to why
there’s a lot of neon effects in the
picture, in particular, around the
performer
6. DIGIPAK: EXAGGERATION ON
ASPECTS/SURREALISTIC VIBES
(USE/DEVELOP)
In the synthpop genre there is usually a huge exaggeration on particular elements in
order to convey the sense of surrealism. In some synthpop music videos, they focus
on the psychedelic and distorted side. With this comes the association of drugs and
things that have spurned from pure imagination. We wanted to take this and give it a
new spin in the form of space and hyper-reality.
