1. TASK 9 FORMAL PROPOSAL (EXAMPLE BY STUDENT KAV)
Title of magazine
I have not yet confirmed what the name of my indie rock magazine will be, although I have a couple of ideas. Riff
is one of them as it is short and catchy and also relates to a guitar which links in with the genre of my music
magazine. Another idea for the name of my magazine is RNI which stands for rock and indie. This also links the
the genre of my magazine as well as being catchy and short
Choice of genre
The genre of my magazine I have chosen is indie rock, as I already have background knowledge with this
particular genre; also it is my favorite type of music. This is since I have always been influenced by indie rock, as
it reflects my personality and style. Therefore I would know what to expect in an indie rock magazine. Even
though I do not buy any music magazines I do like the look of the NME which is also an indie rock genre.
My Target audience
Indie rock music is usually aimed at mainly males but also can be aimed at females. However my magazine will
just be based on males between the ages of 16-21. Because of my young target audience I will make my magazine
affordable for them and also have fresh content and include bands and artists that will attract my target
audience into purchasing my magazine.
Initial ideas for Front Cover
For my front cover, I am planning to use a medium shot of an indie rock artist, who is dressed very individually
which makes them stands out and makes him fit in with the genre of my magazine. I have also come to
conclusion that the colour of my title will be navy blue so my target audience instantly recognizes that my
magazine is aimed at young males. Furthermore for the sell lines, I would like it to be related to the artist on the
front cover, and include exclusive interviews, gig dates, competitions and include an indie fashion page.
Initial ideas for My Contents page
For my contents page, the masthead will be large at the top of the page so that it stands out to the reader. I will
also place all the features along the side which will be categorized. Whilst on the other side, there will be one
dominant image of the cover artist, followed by a few smaller images, to show other features in the magazine. I
will also be adding an editor’s note to my target readers.
Initial ideas for my article
For my double mage spread, I intend to do an interview with the artist on the front cover of my magazine(but I’ll
make sure he looks very different to the cover image… clothes, background, shot type etc.) and the interview will
be about what bands influenced him to get into music. It will be mainly dominated by a main image but also
backed up by some text. The interview will be very informal and relaxed so he can be more open to the readers
and try and inspire them. I will also have several other images of the artist to make the article interesting to look
at.
Initial ideas for photographs
The front cover photography, I have decided to use a medium shot of a male indie rock artist. For the contents I
will use the dominant image of an MCU shot of the artist. However I have also chosen 3 other images, which will
be close ups of different features of the magazine, I will use a mixture of males to show the magazine that this is
specifically aimed at young males. Lastly for the double page spread, I want to use 4 different camera shots, to
express the artist in the interview, I have chosen to use a close up to reveal facial expressions, a long shot to show
his whole indie rock image, a medium close up shot to focus the attention on him. And lastly a medium long shot
to also reflect what his style is like. Furthermore I have used these shot types, as they are mostly common found
within indie rock magazines, however I have not yet decided to have a group shot to tell the readers that they are
a band. I will most likely go with a plain background- maybe navy blue and red? For the cover, but would like a
rock independent feel for the background in the article with some essential indie rock props such as a guitar,
amps etc.
