Indie Rock Magazine Audience Appeal
1. EVALUATION- Question 5How did you attract or address your audience?
Introduction
When I was designing my magazine I had to take its target audience into account
because they are the people I am trying to sell my media product to. I had to take
all of their interests into consideration and even looked at common stereotypes
from the indie rock genre to make the magazine more appealing towards them.
2. I feel that I used an appropriate colour scheme because the colours which I selected all have
meanings and connotations to do with indie rock culture. Although the connotations it
present are negative as well as being positive. I believe that the target audience will find it
easy to relate to because this colour features a lot in similar magazines and also represent a
lot of there lives.
The majority of indie rock fans are male so I attempted to make the magazine more
appealing by using a male artist who appears to be masculine and is also a role
model to the people who listen to indie rock. I used this person throughout my
magazine in certain including, the front cover, the contents page and I also created
a page to display the “exclusive interview” which I displayed on a double page
spread. I used Mise en scene to challenge the views of my target audience by
dressing the music artist in a suit. Although, a suit would not be considered as a
suitable item of clothing for an artist from the indie rock genre because it appears
to be too formal. I intended to do this from the start because I want the target
audience to view the artist differently to how they did before he made his
“comeback”. In the article we discuss very briefly about his addiction to alcohol. In
fact it was only implied in one of the questions when he mentions how he likes to
drink. This will address to the audience because they are associated with heavy
drinking and sometimes even drug-taking as you would know from the common
stereotypes they are known to represent. The message that I was trying to convey
to the audience was that the music artist has changed his lifestyle and also his
overall attitude.

4. To test how successful my magazine was at attracting the right target audience I
created a focus group which consisted of 5 people. The 5 people that I chose to
ask were all interested in the indie rock genre so they knew what to expect
because most of them have read similar magazines before. 3 out of the 5 people
who I asked questions told me before that they all buy the indie rock magazine
The Wire which is a very popular and successful magazine. I asked all of them
individually so that no answers wouldn’t be influenced by others and also that
the questions were answered correctly. Overall they all seemed pleased with the
content of the magazine because they all said that it would interest them. One
comment that I received which stood out the most was “I think the magazine
covers a lot of topics, like music from today and also from the 80’s” this means
that my magazine will appeal to everyone in its audience because it also appeals
to the older generation as well as the younger generation. However, they all
claimed that they would prefer to read other magazine because mine didn’t have
a “professional look”.
