Formal Proposal
Title of magazine
• I have chosen to name my magazine ‘Rock
Rage’. I chose this because it is short, easy to
remember and the use of alliteration makes
it catchy. The word ‘Rage’ is also associated
with teenagers as they are usually quite
moody and can get angry easily so I felt this
was an appropriate name, and by using the
word ‘Rock’ it immediately links to the
  rock/indie genre.
Choice Of Genre
I have chosen indie/rock as my genre, as I have
background knowledge within the genre, as it is my
personal interest in music. This is because I feel with
the lyrics used a rock song can hit an emotional level
and have a deeper meaning which I feel I can connect
to, I find that it takes my stresses away and reflects
the way I approach life. With this knowledge I would
therefore know what would be expected in a
indie/rock music magazine. I am also a huge fan of
Kerrang! Magazine and so again know what is
expected of a good music magazine relating to this
genre.
My Target Audience
• A stereotypical target audience for the
indie/rock genre would be mainly males aged
16-19 however I have decided to challenge
this by aiming my magazine at both females
and males and have chosen to target my
  magazine at people aged 16-21
Initial ideas for my front cover
• For my front cover, I am planning to use a medium shot of a White
British male, who is dressed in either dark clothing to represent the rock
genre or clothing such as a checkered shirt and chinos, as this is the indie
style of clothing. I will also have them holding an electric guitar or
playing the drums to show it Is a music magazine and as these particular
musical instruments are known to be associated with the rock/indie
genre it will attract my target audience. I want the expression on the
their face to be either quite ‘loud’ to reflect the loudness of the
rock/indie genre or serious to create an ambient mood and show the
darkness of the rock/indie genre. I want the title of my magazine to be in
either white, red or black as these are dark masculine colours which will
stand out and attract my target audience. I think I will use these colours
for my house style as well through out the magazine. For the cover lines I
want them to be related to the artist on the front cover, latest fashion
trends of the rock/indie genre and relate to current artists of the
  rock/indie genre
Initial ideas for my contents page
• For my contents page I will repeat my masthead from the front cover
and underneath It will read ‘Contents’ which will be written in a different
colour to my masthead in order to stand out. I will use the rule of thirds
and have one dominant image placed on the left hand side of the page
with 2 or 3 smaller images underneath, all the images will relate in some
way to the content of my magazine and the rock/indie genre. The main
image will either be a medium close up or a medium shot and the
smaller images will most likely be medium close ups or close ups,
therefore I will have used different camera shots to make my contents
page look more appealing. The features of my magazine will be written
on the right hand side which will all be numbered and catograised so it is
easy for the reader to find things within my magazine, I will also add an
editors not on the contents page so the readers of my magazine can get a
feel as to what the magazine is about, what is going to be featured in it
and it will make my contents page more attractive.
Initial ideas for my article
• For the double page spread, I intend to do an interview with the person
on the cover, to make sure they don’t look the same as they do on the
cover on the double page spread I will change the clothing, background,
type of shot and expression on their face etc. the article will be about his
‘rise to fame’ as he is going to be seen as a ‘rising star’ having just been
noticed and found by the music industry and what he intends to do in
the future now his talent has been noticed. It will be dominantly picture
based as I aim to show his excitement and celebratory attitude in the
facial expressions within the shots which I will verify to show different
parts of his body, as this will enable the reader to see his choice of
clothing (which will relate to the rock/indie genre), I will make sure there
is an appropriate amount of text to balance it out and enable the readers
to fully grasp the personality of the artist. The purpose of my article will
be to have the readers feeling that they to can achieve their dreams and
future goals after having read the article.
Initial ideas for my photographs
• The front cover image will be a medium shot of a male artist, for the
contents page I will have one main dominate image which will be an
MCU ( medium close up). I will also use 2 to 3 different images with one
being a close up and the other a medium close up with possibly another
medium close up of features within the magazine. I will use both males
and females so that it attracts both female and male audiences. Finally
for the double page spread I want to use 3 or 4 different camera shots I
want the main image to be a medium shot possibly a medium long shot
showing his whole body, a close up to show his celebratory and excited
expression on his face and a medium close up so that the focus is on him
completely. I intend to have a either a white background so that the dark
clothing stands out showing the contrast between the happiness and
excitement he is feeling having achieved his dreams against the darkness
of the rock/indie genre or I will have a dark background to make an
ambient mood expressing the indie/rock genre’s dark deeper meaning. I
would also like to use props such as an electric guitar, microphone, amp
set to add to the feel of the indie/rock genre and make it more
  attractive.
