The document provides initial ideas for a proposed music magazine called "Sound" focused on indie rock. It discusses choosing indie rock as the genre due to the author's knowledge and interest. The target audience is identified as males and females aged 15-25 who like indie rock. Front cover ideas include a prominent band image, logo, and sell lines in typical indie rock magazine colors. The contents page would list all 65 pages in columns under headings. A double page spread article would feature a band image on one page and a column-formatted article on the other. Photographs would be taken with a Canon camera, including close-ups for the front cover and live shots inside.
1. Formal Proposal
Title of Magazine
I have chosen to name my magazine, Sound. I wish to name my magazine this because it refers to music as being
a sound, it is short and simple for the audience to remember, it doesn’t really classify what kind of music it is so
it might make people from other genres to want to look at it, it isn’t long and won’t take up space on the front
cover. When thinking of a name for my magazine previously I thought it was too centered around classing it as a
indie rock magazine even though it is, I felt that when looking at NME or Q magazines, they didn’t use large
titles that labeled their magazine as one genre related magazine, they kept it short and simple, I wanted it just to
symbolize music instead just like NME and Q because they have a large audience already.
Choice of genre
I have chosen Indie rock as my genre, I know the main background for indie rock, I like many indie rock bands,
I know a great knowledge of indie rock music as shown in my research but also I do like to listen to many indie
rock bands such as the black keys, Arctic Monkeys, the kooks, the vaccines, etc. and also know many unknown
indie rock artist and bands too that are unsigned. When asking my target audience many of the said that they
like indie rock music some said they like anything, I wish to make sure that my magazine fulfills their indie rock
needs.
My Target audience
For my target audience, for indie rock usually males buy magazines like NME or Q magazine, but for me I wish
to aim it both female and males in the age of 15-25 years old, I wish to make sure that my target audience get
everything they wish to get out of my magazine, with a good price for the magazine too so that they feel they are
able to afford my magazine. I wish to be able to get a lot of things into one magazine for my target audience.
Initial ideas for Front Cover
For my front cover I wish to create a professional looking front cover, I wish to make it look like magazines like
Q or Clash; I wish to have one main image for the front cover of the main band or artist of the magazine, I wish
to have the logo of the magazine at the top, either on the left or across the top of the magazine. I wish to maybe
use super imposition, but if not I wish to layer my logo over the image of the artist or band. I wish to include a lot
of sell lines to attract the audience. I would like to stick to the main usual colour scheme for indie rock music
magazines of red, white, grey and black but I wanted to maybe use others, and it depends on the image etc.
Initial ideas for My Contents page
For my content page I wish to have the title of the content page across the top with the logo of the magazine with
it. I wish to have the date of the magazine too. I would like to have a very professional layout, using columns for
the pages and the page sections; I will have all 65 pages (unless adverts are on the pages instead) in sections
underneath headings. I wish to include an image of a band or artist in the magazine; again I wish it to look
professional.
Initial ideas for my article
For the double page spread I wish to have one page of just an image of the band or the artist. I wish to have a
coloured background for it. I wish to have columns for my article, this sets it out as a professional looking
magazine, I wish to have a large title with a sub-title of the article. I wish to make sure my article is either based
on a well known artist or band or a unknown artist/band, this makes it more interesting and giving the chance
for other artists/bands to have a chance to show other artist off so it isn’t same old bands being in the magazine
and advertising new bands to get promotion and have people listen to them.
Initial ideas for photographs
2. The front cover I wish to have a mid-close up shot of an artist or a member of a band giving direct address to the
camera, I wish to use a professional cannon camera that I have at home to make it have a better quality shot, I
wish to have a blurred out or coloured background, for the images inside the magazine on the content page I
wish to have a vintage, grunge, old looking kind of photos of live bands or bands playing or I wish to simply just
have images of bands at concerts with no effects on them. For my DPS I wish to have the same person I had on
the front cover in the magazine hopefully, I wish to make it again plain and professional and simple, hopefully be
able to get a white background and a mid-shot of them standing, maybe not giving direct address to the camera.
