1. TASK 9 – FORMAL PROPOSAL
Title of my magazine: I have chosen to name my magazine Acapella. It’s a bold and catchy word that
I feel is appropriate for the magazine. The connotations of ‘Acapella’ is a voice without instruments
and I see this as what my magazine is all about, as we are hearing the artists voice without all the
musical arrangements we are used to hearing them with. Also as a magazine, we want to encourage
people to voice their opinions and so this is appropriate.
Choice of genre: I have chosen Pop as my genre, as I already have background knowledge within the
genre, also I am personally interested in this music and it features in the chart very often. This is
since I have always been influenced by Pop, as it is often featured everywhere. It also involves
aspects of fashion. Therefore I would know what would be expected in pop magazine.
Target Audience:The pop genre’s stereo typical target audience would be young teenage girls;
however I am choosing to challenge this by aiming the magazine at both females and perhaps males
aged between 16-24. Many different ethnicities enjoy pop music depending on the country they live
in so I will try to make sure my magazine appeals to all ethnicities.
Initial ideas for Front Cover: For my front cover, I am planning to use a close up shot of a female
artist, who is dressed very vibrantly, also the image should reflect happiness rather than attitude or
sexuality, to show the joyful elements of pop. I have also decided to colour the title of the magazine
either red or a bright blue and use it as the house style colour throughout the magazine.
Furthermore for the cover linesI would like there to be elements of fashion, as well as interviews
with the pop artist featured on the cover and other artist information.
Initial ideas for My Contents page: For my contents page, the masthead will be a large at the top of
the page in the same house style as the masthead but saying ‘contents’ instead. I will make sure I
have a small logo in the corner of the page similar to the style of the masthead on the cover. I will
also place all the features along the side which will be categorized. Whilst on the other side, there
will be 1 dominant image of the cover girl, followed by 3 smaller images, to show other features in
the magazine. Finally, I will also have advertisements on my magazine contents page.
Initial ideas for my article: For the double page spread, I intent to do an interview with the cover girl
and it will be based on her career so far and how she got into the music industry. I will make sure
any images used are quite different to that used on the front cover (e.g. clothes, pose, background
etc.). It will not be dominantly text based, as I will use the first page for a main image, this way
readers are given a visual representation of the artist as well as information about her. I will also use
a small image of the artist performing on the other page where her interview is featured.
Initial ideas for photographs: For the front cover of my magazine I will use a close up of my artist
only as this will draw attention to her and nothing else will distract from it. For the contents I will use
the dominant image of a Medium shot of the artist. However I have also chosen to have 3 other
images, which will be close ups of different features of the magazines, I will use a mixture of males
and females to show the magazine can also attract males. For the double page spread I plan to use a
medium shot of the artist with again a different background, and then a smaller long shot on the
other page of DPS, of the artist performing. Furthermore I have used these shot types, as they most
2. commonly found within pop magazines. My background will probably be fairly plain and simple to
attract a more sophisticated, older audience, possibly black but I will use many colours over the DPS
to make it colourful, vibrant and to make sure it is following some of the conventions of a pop
magazine whilst challenging the typical target audience of this genre.
