2. Main image on front cover
This is the main image that will be on my front
cover, as you can see I have cropped out the
background from a grey/white background with
lots of creasing. On the image on the left I have
used the quick selection tool to click on what I
wanted to be removed, sometimes it went too
far into her face or hair and so I used the alt key
and extended it back to where I needed it to be.
Then I used the magic wand tool to remove the
background. I decided to change the
background of this image because the grey
colour did not match the theme of my
magazine, it was too dull for a pop magazine
and the white gives it a more clear, crisp affect
and consequently the cover lines and
everything else will stand out more. I took
inspiration from this top of the pops magazine
as I liked that design and changed the pose to
make it my own.
3. Front cover
I went around the edges of her hair and
other parts which were jagged from
removing the background with the lasso
tool and with a feather (to give it a softer
look) I then removed the remaining parts I
didn’t want. This gave it a cleaner, sharper
look on the front cover and got rid of
remaining parts of the background.
I also did this around the whole image
including her arms and shoulders. In other
pop magazines such as this ‘we<3pop’
one they have mostly clean lines.
I think this gives a better affect.
4. Front cover Also on the front cover, I have used another
image of a boyband, I have also done the
same thing of removing the background from a
off white/grey to no background as it was
going to be on my cover page at the bottom. I
did this the same way as I did the main image
on my cover page and used the quick
selection tool and then the magic wand on
photo shop to remove the background. I
decided to do this because a white
background on top of my main image would
look out of place and wrong. Another
magazine that has done this similarly is
‘we<3pop’ where they have also used a group
on the masthead and cropped out the
background.
5. Front cover
Once I had removed the background I
had to change the colour filter of the
picture as it was too warm/yellow toned
for what I wanted. I did this by using a
blue photo filter which eradicated the
warm yellow tones and added a blue
cooler filter which in the end made it a
normal balance. The difference between
the two photographs meant I had
changed a lot about the image as shown
on the bottom left. The image before,
when taking it, I used studio lights that
were too yellow and so this was easily
fixed in photo shop. As you can see in
the image on the top left, when I added
the blue filter it was still on the main
image when I removed the white
background, I then had to crop the blue
filter out using the lasso tool.
6. Front cover
For this image, I also cropped the background using
the quick selection tool, rasterizing the layer and then
removing the background. I did this because I wanted
to add my own background and so this background
did not go with my genre. As you can see on the
bottom left, the background before was dull
compared to the sharp white of what I wanted. For
example here on this pop magazine, I used a plain
white background and cropped it because other
magazines had done it too. This makes the person on
the image stand out more.
7. Front cover
When I removed the background completely
it looked like this and so was completely
white, I then had to go around with the lasso
tool and clean up the edges with a slight
feather to give a softer effect.
I then added a background to give it a more
pop feel and add more of the colour blue as I
thought I had too much pink. I then added
another background to make it white so it
looks like a poster and then added pink
squiggles.
9. Front cover lines
• I have used a similar amount of cover lines on my front
cover as other pop music magazines have, mine are more
standard and promote continuity more in the magazine. I
have also used pull quotes as most other magazines have
to grab the reader’s attention and using names that would
be known and are popular to the genre. This is so the
target audience would be more drawn to read the
magazine.
10. Contents Page This image is also one I have removed
the background of. When I used the
quick selection tool, it went too far into
their faces and cropped parts I didn’t
want to crop. I then held down the alt
key and drew over parts I wanted to
keep and then removed the background
from then.
It resulted in the photo on the right with
parts of the background that were
showing. I then went with the lasso tool
and got rid of those parts making them
white.
11. Contents Page After I had got rid of the smaller
parts of the background, I made a
rectangle box and proceeded to put
a colour cover lay on top to make it
pink and then using the ‘custom
shape’ tool found a diagonal pattern
and changed the colour to blue the
same way and put it on top, then I
added the image on top and linked
all the layers together. The
background colours are the two
colours that from my questionnaire,
I found out were the most popular
for my pop genre. This background
makes it more appealing and
brighter when reading the contents
page.
12. Contents Page Here on this image I have also cropped out
the background the same ways as before. I
wanted to get rid of the brick background as
it did not match with my genre however the
lighting is good in this photo. Again, I had to
use the lasso tool to go around parts that
the quick selection tool missed. Once I had
got rid of the background it looked like this:
I then manipulated the background by adding a
white rectangle and behind that rectangle I
used a pink rectangle. To get the blue striped
lines I had to use small and thin rectangles and
do that multiple times to get the stripe effect.
13. Contents Page For this image I also did the same, I
wanted to get rid of the dull
background as this was going to be a
small editors picture on the contents
page. I used the quick selection tool,
rasterized the layer and deleted the
background. The background came
out even and well so I left it like that.
14. Contents Page
This image was also warm toned and
slightly orange which is not the look I
wanted for my magazine. So I added a
photo filter of blue to make it more cool
toned as the following:
I also added a circle and had to
crop out the sides of the
shoulder to make it fit into the
circle. To create the circle I
chose the ellipse tool on photo
shop, made one circle white and
one pink and linked the layers.
15. Contents Page I also did the same from this image
using a white screen, it was easier
to crop the background out using
the quick selection and magic wand
tool. Here is the before and after:
I then used a blue rectangle box and
a dotted border around the outside
to give a stitched effect and put the
image on the top and linked all the
layers together.
17. Contents Page cover lines
• On my contents page, I have used an editors message
and this is on most contents pages and this is because it
adds a personal touch and so this text is on most contents
pages. Also I have used text to show what is on the pages
which is standard for all music magazines to show what
will be appearing. I have also added text by the images to
show which image anchors which part of the text which
some other magazines have used and some others have
done this also and so I have taken inspiration from this.
