How my media product uses conventions of real magazines
1. Q1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Becky Ung
2. INTRODUCTION
In my magazine, I think I have mostly used codes of
conventions as I believe following current trends in
magazine designs is what makes a magazine
successful so I took inspiration from certain
magazines. In some aspects of my magazine, I
have subtly challenged and developed magazines
but overall, I have mostly used code of conventions.

4. DIFFERENCES
Although they both feature main images,
my magazine has one Indian female on it
and the Kerrang magazine has three
white males. This may be because the
main image is tailored to fit in with the
genre. As my magazine is indie pop,
consequently my main image will feature
a female as stereotypically, my target
audience of females tend to enjoy indie
pop more than males. Kerrang is a punk/
rock magazine therefore the demographic
is widely males as they stereotypically
enjoy rock music as it is louder and more
boisterous. They follow code of
conventions as they are also featured in a
group as it is more likely that there will be
rock bands than rock solo artists. My
magazine also follows code of
conventions as it features a single female
on the front as stereotypically indie pop
mainly feature one artist rather than
groups.
However, I would say my magazine has challenged the code of
conventions as they feature an Indian artist. Although my
magazine does not focus on ethnicity so much for the target
audience, indie pop music normally features white artists rather
than any other ethnicities. This perhaps helps change the
perspective for indie pop and widens the reach of audience due to
the fact it features people of different ethnicities. Kerrang sticks
with their stereotypical ethnicity as rock music tends to be
associated with white males.
6. DIFFERENCES
Main image- I have decided not to use a
choker as it did not say much in terms of the
representation of the genre and age of the
target audience. I replaced it with the use of a
prop which was a lollipop as this represents
her as playful and childish which branches out
to the young target audience (16-25).
Secondary images – instead of lining the
images vertically I made them slightly overlap
in order to show make use of the empty space
and so the images could be enlarged in order
to catch the audiences eye.
Colour scheme – I have kept within the
baby pink colour scheme which gave a
feminine aspect to the magazine as pink
is associated with love and emotions and
women tend to be represented as
sensitive and emotional. However, I
decided against the baby blue on the
cover line ‘ainsley’ because it looked odd
with the rest of the colour scheme and
did not fit in
Masthead – I have kept the same name ‘elements’ but I have slightly changed the design of my masthead.
Instead of the thin masthead, I have changed it to a thicker font and abandoned the curvy line behind the
masthead as it wouldn’t be seen underneath the thick font. I have changed it to a thicker font because

7. MODE OF LANGUAGE
In my cover lines, I have
used words such as ‘You’
and ‘Meet’. This gives direct
address to the audience
and gives a personal
aspect to the magazine.
This is attracts the
audience as they feel more
invited when reading the
magazine and connotes a
sense of familiarity as if the
magazine is trying to
associate itself with the
reader/ target audience.
The main image
also denotes direct
address as she is
shown staring
straight into the
camera. This draws
in the reader as she
is giving an alluring
stare which females
can view for
voyeuristic pleasure.

Editor’s message – this
adds a personal aspect
as they address the

made for them or with
them in mind.
9. DIFFERENCES
A section with social media has been inserted
on the bottom left corner of my page. This
follows the code of conventions as with the
rule of thirds, it is located in the dead spots as
it is not as important and doesn’t have a
massive role in the magazine. However, this
has been added because it relates to my
target audience as stereotypically, teenagers
and young adults spend a lot of time on social
media and on their phones.
The page titles and cover lines are
different in my magazine. I have chosen to
follow the code of conventions and state
the clear page title and extra information in
a different font. Whereas in the other
magazine, they have portrayed the page
numbers and titles in a narrative form.
I have added strokes around my pictures
and titles as it makes them stand out.
I have followed code and conventions as I have made it clear with my brand
identity by placing the masthead at the top right of my contents page
11. DIFFERENCES
The secondary images are
located near the bottom of
the page but in different sides
to avoid the magazine looking
too formal and structured as it
is an indie magazine for
teenagers who are
stereotypically messy
The grab quote is
enlarged and follows
code and conventions as
it catches the readers eye
by doing so.
Social media information
The contents page title follows code and conventions as it is similar to
the front cover and it needs to keep within the theme to make it look
sophisticated and not tacky.
The brand identity is
included with the masthead
13. DIFFERENCES
The main images spread over the double page spread in Kerrang,
whereas my magazine is located on the left page and only takes up a
small proportion of it. This develops the code of conventions as
normally, following the rule of thirds, my main image would be in the
hot spots and be typically in the centre or at least taking up a whole
page. However, I have chosen to only put it in half of the left page
because I want the central focus to be the article and it is quite an in-
depth story that deserves more attention. Stereotypically, women are
more sensitive and emotional so they may focus more on the article
as they can relate and feel empathy for the artist.
My magazine has a pull quote
which follows code and conventions
as it is located inside the article and
further emphasises the overall topic
of the article whereas the Kerrang
article does not have one.
The head line in Kerrang is quite big and very
‘loud’. The colours used are also very male as
blue is stereotypically a masculine colour as it
represents confidence and loyalty which are
very masculine traits. My magazine has the
headline fairly small but still noticeable. This
relates to the genre as indie pop is quite gentle
so I wanted to portray this with my headline.
My magazine also has a secondary image to show the artist in action.
Although this isn’t seen in the Kerrang magazine, typically my magazine
follows code and conventions as it is not place anywhere abnormal and
is used to fill in the blank space. She is seen playing a guitar which is a
typical instrument for indie pop as it is acoustic. Females also tend to
dominate the indie pop industry and the lifestyle of my target audience
are people who enjoy playing instruments so this image relates to my
target audience of females.

the left side of the page

Columns
15. DIFFERENCES
The layout of columns and title is different
because the title and stand first are on the
left hand side on my real magazine. This
develops code and conventions as the
title is not spread onto both page and is
relatively small. The columns on the right
hand side take up the whole page also.
My main image background was supposed to
have a large ‘A’ painted behind. However, I found
this looked very tacky and did not particularly
connote anything so I left it out.
I have added a caption and picture credit
for both pictures
My headline has changed from ‘Rags to
regal’ to ‘From rags to royalty’. This is
because it didn’t make sense and the word
‘Royalty’ relates to my cover line on my
front cover which is ‘Indie royalty tells all’.
I have included brand identity by adding my
masthead and page numbers
16. MODE OF LANGUAGE
This article uses colloquial language
with sentences such as “I stuck out like
a sore thumb” which is informal.
Reading this conversational style article
makes the target audience of teenagers
able to read the article and connect with
the writer and artist. There is also a mix
of formal language such as “…hierarchy
to achieve her exponential fame” with it
to remind the readers that this is a indie
British artist that is most likely going to
be educated. This attracts the audience
as they are also most likely going to be
from working to middle class so this
connotes that they have at least
finished their GCSEs.
