HOW TO DESIGN A DPS
IN INDESIGN
2. INTRO
• I opened adobe InDesign and clicked on ‘create a new
document’. A new window popped up and there was a
box that had ‘number of columns’ which inputted how
many columns are needed for my article. I put 3
columns. I also changed the number of pages to 4 so
later on, I can transfer my front page and contents page
for the final magazine design.
3. COLUMNS AND PAGES
• The columns have margins that give a clear dictation
that they are structured and are an article. It separates
itself from the images and makes it look more
professional.
• Click on pages and right click on any of selected pages
and untick ‘allow document pages to shuffle’
• Move one page from the middle to the bottom pages so
the order is front cover, contents page and then double
page spread lastly.
4. HEADLINE AND STAND FIRST
• Create text box and insert headline. Adjust font type and
size.
• Highlight headline and on the left hand side, click on
colour and change it to desired colour. Then click on
stroke and adjust the weight as well as desired stroke
colour
• Create a stand first by adding a new text book and place
it underneath the headline. Again, adjust the font type
and size, making sure its smaller than the headline but
big enough to stand out so it differentiates itself from the
actual article as well as the headline.
5. ARTICLE
• Create text box. Click on type and fill with placeholder
text. Then click on paragraph formatting controls and go
over to columns and adjust it to 3 columns.
6. ARTICLE - PROBLEMS
• If a red plus sign appears, it means the article has cut
off. To rectify this, you need to create a new text box on
the other page and click on the red plus sign, then move
over to the other page and click the box on the outline of
the textbox and it will attach something to your cursor.
Then go back onto the red plus sign and click on it.
7. DROP CAPS
• To do drop caps, select the first letter of the article and
click on paragraph formatting controls. Then go onto
drop cap number of lines which will span over how many
lines you want (3 lines).
9. • Go onto file, then place. Insert your image and size it to
preference. Then click on to paragraph formatting and
click wrap around object. You can then adjust the
spacing by clicking on
10. CAPTION AND GRAB QUOTE
• Type in your text and there will be a red mark. Right click
on the photo and tick ignore wrap text. Make sure font is
different type.
• Make the grab quote large and text wrap it in the middle
of the article.
