College Textbook Cost
The Effect of College Textbook Costs The burden of the expensive college textbooks has many effects on students and their pockets. Many students
experience the dilemma of paying for the class, but also they are unable to pay for required books. The issue of not having the specified book may
affect the students work and participation in class. Without a doubt high pricedtextbooks add difficultly in passing a course, but there are alternatives
for students. The excessive price of these college textbooks often aid students in their difficultly in passing an information course, yet there are possible
al–ternatives for students, such as used books or lecture classes, but the most convenient is Chegg. A few problems addressed with high priced... Show

Additional–ly, they have to transition around their needs, which may lead to new jobs or auxiliary loans. All of these factors hamper students, and
even direct them to drop the course. The high priced text–books benefit book–stores, but not the consumers, who heavily rely on certain books to pass
rig–orous courses. However, there are alternatives available the students can rely on, such as online textbooks or used textbooks. The best
alternative is to buy the book available on Chegg, new or used at a reasonable price. The decisions are now left on students to either find a way to
pay for the books, use an alternative, or abandon the class. Textbook prices truly affect students; they are not able to use the book if they are not able

Tablets Vs. Textbooks
"Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge
with the motion picture" (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers
more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that
there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a
touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be

Stephanie Hedge emphasizes that ". Tablets can use polling and clicker technology, whiteboard projection, and more. A single tablet has the potential
to replace a suite of technologies, and is perfect for classrooms without much technology support" (parag.5).According to this evidence, tablets can
have multiple purposes. Tablets can be used as a device for video and audio interaction. This eliminates or removes a lifeless environment that is now
current in the classroom. .According to the University Of Washington" Course management tools such as Canvas allow instructors to organize all the
resources students need for a class (e.g. syllabi, assignments, readings, online quizzes), provide valuable grading tools, and create spaces for
discussion, document sharing, and video and audio commentary. All courses are automatically given a Canvas site" (parag.7).This rebuttable
university believes that tablets are a great way to stay organized. This allows teacher to better manage their grading system, therefore allowing them to
be more aware of whether the student passing or failing. To sum up, teachers who used technology as a way to teach students end up establishing a
better learning environment.
Tablets would be the better alternative as compared to the printed versions of class work.

Rising Cost of College Textbooks
Ask any college student to state one of their largest expenses and it would be safe to bet the response would be "Textbook prices!" The cost of
purchasing required materials for courses has reached numbers high enough to cause many students to take out second loans. Information released this
year by the American Enterprise Institute shows that "College textbook prices have increased faster than tuition, health care costs and housing prices, all
of which have risen faster than inflation" (Kingkade, 2013). This information equates to an 812% increase in the cost of college textbooks over what
they were just over thirty years ago (Kingkade, 2013). The figure here shows an unusually large increase that has far outpaced that of average ... Show

The new package costs $208.65, a nearly thirty dollar increase from the summer session. What this meant for those unfortunate students was they were
now $180.00 more in debt. Again, the University of Delaware should not be putting students in the position of purchasing required textbook packages
which they will be unable to sell back.
By looking at these examples in the bigger picture, the vicious cycle created by publishers becomes evident. Students find themselves forced to buy
the books the professors assign, they must buy them new in order to get special access codes, and then they have difficulty selling the books back. Not
to mention the fact that the release of newer editions can leave many students stuck with a book they do not want and more debt they cannot afford.
This cycle created by publishers works by continuously finding new ways to charge students full price for textbooks while simultaneously finding ways
to release newer editions on an almost semester–by–semester basis. The result: increased textbook prices and an increasing financial burden on
students. The question has become how can one best break this cycle and avoid putting themselves even deeper into debt? Students have begun finding
their own solutions, some clever while others are illegal. A

Textbooks Vs Textbooks In Textbooks
Portable technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom have become such a norm in today's society, and students and parents are believing
that this is a good thing. Are they really considering all of the effects of technology and how often it is being used? What is it doing to the education
in schools? Chou et al. states that as of 2012, there were over 2000 school districts that have adopted different types of electronical devices and this
amount is "growing rapidly" (11). According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, that is about 11,000 schools as of 2000. If this trend
continues, almost all schools will have switched to using technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom. Teachers and administrators believe
that this technology increase has helped students learn more effectively, and more importantly, they believe that it is more cost effective than staying
with the hard copy textbooks. Teachers in K–12 schools should continue to use traditional textbooks instead of replacing them with tablets because of
the student's ability to retain more information, have a lesser chance of being distracted, and the cost effectiveness of staying with textbooks. One
important reason to stay with traditional textbooks is that students retain information more effectively when they read from print rather than reading
from a screen. Naomi Baron, a linguist who has done a lot of research on the use of social media points to a study that let each student

Persuasive Essay On Cost Of Textbooks
As every incoming freshman begins their preparation for moving day, one major task is always at the top of the to–do list. That task is buying
textbooks. Most families dread this task because of the unnecessarily high price of each textbook they will have to purchase. Granted colleges and
universities have developed some ways to lower the price on textbooks, such as buying used or renting, but the families are still stuck paying hundreds
of dollars on books each semester that some professors will use a handful of times. The price of attending college is already high enough, so why put
more burden on the student and their family by making them buy these outrageously expensive textbooks.
The cost of college textbooks has progressively increased, at an unnecessarily rapid pace, and costing college bound students large amounts of money
that can accumulate to a large chunk of tuition that is added on top of the cost of attendance. This chunk of money can add up to about 20 percent of in
state public school's tuition (University Business). This is a large percentage for students to pay on top of the costs of attendance, but that's not the
worst of it. Students that attend community colleges pay about 72 percent of tuition in addition to cost of attendance on textbooks. This percentage is
even more staggering, even though community colleges cost less overall, the students are still getting hit with a huge bill for their textbooks
(Dervarics). Not only do textbooks cost students large sums of money, but the rate at which the
Prichard 1 prices are increasing are blistering. According to an article written by Charles Dervarics, the GAO (Government Accountability Office)
reported that from 1986 to 2007 the price of textbooks annually increased at a rate that doubled that of inflation. This is yet another mind– blowing
statistic as the price of textbooks was growing faster than the U.S economy. This same report was put into an article written by David Zhou. One might
say that it is not necessary to buy the textbooks, but statistics show that those who do not buy the textbook perform significantly worse than those who
did buy the book (Zhou).
Another problem with the prices of textbooks is that there is a discrepancy

Traci is a student in the fall semester at Tyler Junior college. She is from India and still very new to the American Education System. English is not
her first language, but she is extremely grateful going to college in America and having her childhood dream come true. After all, her green card is
still in process and she is unable to get a job or get any kind of funds to help her with her education. She has to pay for all her expenses out of her
pocket, which is very difficult, given her current financial situation. Fortunately, Tyler Junior college offers an installment tuition fees, which helps

That was totally out of the question. So, she decided to make photocopies of those pages, which she could afford. After finishing the copies, she
went over again to the front desk to return the book and to check out the second book. The person behind the counter with all politeness told her,
"Sorry, that book just got checked out by another student." Traci would have to wait for at least two hours before she could have it. She stood there
with her mouth so wide opened, that she could have swallowed the globe. The person behind the counter read her facial expression, and with great
sympathy, told her, "We have only one copy of that particular book." Traci was so disappointed, knowing that she did not have that much time to wait
and would not be able to do the assignment for her next class.
Traci was sad that she was going to lose points and sad that she was unable to buy a textbook. She is a hardworking student. She wants to do well in
school and get A's in all subjects. In order for that to happen, in Tyler Junior College, the Library should have a minimum of 5 copies of each
reserve textbook that should be available to students like Traci to use, because textbooks are expensive to buy or to rent. There is a long wait to get a
book, and at present, there are not enough reserve text books available.

Replacing Textbooks In Schools
Replacing textbooks with Technology Imagine what giving a school full of middle schoolers tablets or laptops would be like. How many of them
would just play games instead of doing work? Countless people believe that replacing textbooks with tablets or small computers is the future of

Also, according to the article, "Many students do not have sufficient bandwidth to use tablets," so even if students do have wifi at home it still might

day can cause headaches; according to the article, "Handhelds contribute to Computer Vision Syndrome, which causes eyestrain, headaches, blurred
vision, and dry eyes, according to the American Optometric Association"(Should Tablets Replace textbooks in K–12 Schools?). There are countless
potential distractions that can be caused by laptops and tablets. One problem with tablets and laptops is that sometimes only a specialist can fix them
when they are broken. This is a large contrast to textbooks which can be fixed with tape or glue. In addition, the article stated that the average battery
life is shorter than the school day, which means more electricity used at school and a need for more electrical outlets. Another distraction caused by
tablets and laptops is the easy access to online games. Also, having tablets or laptops would make it extremely easy for students to

After robbing your bank account to pay tuition, high textbook costs add insult to injury. However, solutions to the staggering cost of college textbooks
are close to home.
No one struggles alone. The College Board estimates an average college student spends over $1,000 on textbooks every year. In a report published by
Student Public Interest Research Groups, more than half of students say they did not buy a required textbook because it is too expensive and over 90
percent of students who go without are concerned it will impact their grade.

"Affordability is always a concern for us, that's why we have so many different options for our students," Robinson says. The bookstore price–matches
online competitors like Amazon as well as local competitors, while also offering rental, digital, used and loose–leaf books.
For change to happen in the college textbooks market, the change must be a lot deeper than the distributor level. Whether you buy a required textbook
at the campus bookstore, Textbook Brokers down the street, or online at Amazon, you are still forced to support a multi–billion dollar industry racket
that holds your grades and education hostage for a profit.

Reading and Understanding College Textbooks emphasizes improvement of the reading process and study skills necessary for understanding and
learning college–level material; it focuses on strengthening reading comprehension and encourages critical reading skills that are necessary for
successful completion of college courses. Students learn a variety of strategies to assist them in improving vocabulary, comprehension, test–taking
abilities, and flexibility in reading.
Challenges and Goals
We chose to implement MyReadingLab beginning in fall 2013 due to a number of challenges we had been facing. Previously, students had to take
division exams on an internal web portal in our tutoring and testing center. If students did not receive an 80 percent, they would have to work with a
tutor in the computer lab to improve their skills before taking the exam a second time. We experienced high volumes of paperwork and grading errors,
and students were not getting what they needed to succeed.
MyReadingLab offers students a flexible, convenient way to remediate wherever and whenever they choose. It provides instructors with all the
necessary content in one location and the ability to ensure consistency of topic mastery across sections. It has been a goal of ours to tweak our
MyReadingLab implementation each semester to improve student results and

Pros And Cons Of Textbooks
The government set up Working Group on Textbooks and e–Learning Resources Development in 2008. The purpose is to release electronic textbooks
and replace traditional print textbooks. Thereafter, dozens of schools participated the Pilot Scheme on e–learning in schools. Some parents argue that
electronic textbooks are better that traditional print textbooks, while other parents argue that electronic textbooks are worse that traditional print
textbooks.
One advantage of the electronic textbooks is that electronic textbooks are more convenient than traditional print textbooks. There is a huge database on
the internet. Teachers can obtain the material easily to teach the students. Daniel and Woody argued that the beneficial flexibility and accessibility...

Students need to carry many books to the school every day. It may harm the backbones of students. Embong, Noor, Hashim, Ali and Shaari (2012)
found that electronic textbooks can bring the physically benefit to the students. Students do not have to carry many books so that they are able to relax
their shoulders.
It can be argued that electronic textbooks are also friendly for the environment than traditional print textbooks owing to the fact that people need to
chop many trees to produce a print textbook book. According to Shepperd, Grace and Koch (2008) it would be environmental protection if students do
not print a hard copy of their study materials. Electronic textbooks do not need to print out. Also, one electronic textbook can replace many traditional
print textbooks. Therefore, the trees can be protected so it is very well for environment.
Electronic textbooks are often cheaper than traditional print textbooks. If the students use the traditional print textbooks, they need to buy the new
books every year. But if the students use the electronic textbooks, they just need to buy one book for several years. Embong, Noor, Hashim, Ali and
Shaari claimed that the government and the schools often provide financial aid to the students to buy the electronic textbooks (as cited in Hellman,
2010). Therefore, it could alleviate the financial burden for poor

Analysing of Two Textbooks Essay
A further useful point is made by Razmjoo and Kazempourfard (2012, pp 180–181), is the usefulness of a coding scheme for each area, which they
utilised for conducting an evaluation of two books within their study. Thus, as each area within the books was considered, a code was assigned which
identified the parameter within which the particular aspect of teaching could be positions. Thus, exercises or materials that focus on remembering
within the four knowledge areas are respectively assigned A1, A2, A3 and A4. The exercises that focus on understanding within the four knowledge
areas would be assigned B1, B2, B3 and B4 etc.

Whether a teacher is on one side of this argument or not, the likelihood is that a text book will be necessary and therefore the evaluation of any that
may be used will be important. This importance swells considerably if the teacher believes that text books should be central to any course. For this
reason, Soleimani and Ghaderi (2013, p. 44) contend that a textbook evaluation is a key task that should be undertaken by teachers but the question
that is posed is what the best approach to evaluation is? They note the two stage model proposed by McDonough (2003), as has been discussed
within this paper as well as the notion of coding in order that the evaluation is appropriately systematic. Indeed, Soleimani and Ghaderi (2013) add to
this the notion of a checklist so that aspects within all areas of the book are adequately evaluated.
Keshta and Seif (2013) discuss the existing literature with regard to course material evaluation and decide that a qualitative approach is the most
likely to elicit the most accurate results. In order to achieve their goals, they first develop an analysis card which sets a criteria, or subjective opinion,
of the material being considered and ask 16 teachers to give their opinion on this material as compared to the yardstick produced. In order to provide
some validity to their yardstick, the content analysis

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Textbooks
Nowadays, the e–Books as text book in the classroom at schools is a new pattern especially in developing countries. But their are also some studies
shows that the traditional print textbooks are irreplaceable. Below are some major advantages and drawbacks of electronic textbook.
Firstly, the superior flexibility and accessibility of e–textbook is one of the benefit using over traditional textbooks (Coleman, 2004; Cavanaugh, 2002;
Long, 2003; Myers, 2009). The characteristics such as attractiveness and ease of availability encourage students to consult for textbook information.
Secondly, e–books will enhancing the learning process effectiveness. The e–Book project of Clearwater High School (2010) describe that e–book

The Cost Of College Textbooks
Example Persuasive Speech Outline Topic: The cost of college textbooks. General Purpose: To persuade. Specific Purpose: To try and make college
more affordable by reducing the cost of textbooks that are ridiculously overpriced. Introduction 1.Attention–getter: How much money have you spent
just this year alone on college? Hold on now, did you include all the fees? Living expenses? Your meal plan? Obvioulsy the answer is going to be
in the upwards of thousands of dollars. Depressing, I know! College should be a time where you are truly discovering who you are and what you
want to do with your life. It shouldn't be about how you're slowly but surely giving your life away to student loans. Oh yes, student loans, the
mortal enemy of any college student. The college tuition alone is already high enough to put you in debt with student loans for a majority of your
life. There are many things that factor into the price of a college education, some reasonable, others however, are a different story. Today, I want to
talk to you about the scam that is going on concerning the price of college textbooks. An interesting statistic by The Huffington Post tells us that the
cost of college textbooks has increased 253% faster than the cost of college tuition over the decade. How come college textbooks are so expensive?
And what can we do to stop this? Well let's get into it shall we. 2.Establishment of Ethos: I don't know about you but, as a college student myself, I can

Technology nowadays has become bigger and bigger. New watches, computers, and phones are being bought every day. Some devices like IPads,
Computers, and tablets are being used in the classroom. But is this really a good way to educate students? Students and teachers should focus less on
technology and use textbooks. One reason that textbooks should be used is because handheld technological devices including tablets are associated
with a wide range of health problems. According to the American Optometric Association, such issues like headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, and
dry eyes, are all factors of "Computer Vision Syndrome".The syndrome can cause bumps in learning, and having issues with health everyday is not a
good way to be learning. People who use electronic devices more often have a hard time focusing because of all the screen time they are having. This
shows that textbooks have a great advantage on learning because they do not cause health issues like headaches, eyestrain, dry eyes, and blurred vision
when using them.
Another reason that textbooks should be used is because using tablets and electronical devices is more expensive than using print textbooks. Not only
do schools have to pay for wifi, insurance, and hardware. But they also have to pay to use the online textbooks (e–textbooks). Lee Wilson, a prominent
education marketing expert, says that implementation costs for online textbooks on iPad tablets are 552% higher than new print textbooks in an
average high school. As technology keeps growing, the more and more the devices will start to cost, resulting in low money in schools. Wilson
estimates that the annual cost per student per class with tablets to be $71.55 vs. $14.26 for print textbooks. This shows that textbooks are less money
and are easier to use in the classroom.
Next, textbooks should be used because students who read print text comprehend more, remember more, and learn more than those who read digital
text. The brain interprets printed and digital text in different ways, and people generally read digital text 20–30% slower than print. Textbooks are
much easier to read because they are on paper, and the "Computer Vision Syndrome" is not in tact while reading off of paper.

Textbooks Vs Textbooks
How many countries are in the world, can dogs eat strawberries, what is the largest building in South America? These are all great questions that can
easily be researched on an iPad. Recent studies show that as of 2016 43 percent of Americans read online books, magazines, or newspapers. The idea
of tablets in the classroom is supported by teachers and students around the country. They believe that tablets would be more effective for learning
purposes and improve standardized testing. In the U.S over 8 billion dollars are spent on outdated textbooks each year. Replacing textbooks with tablets
will benefit students in and outside the classroom.
The K–12 system has shown that switching to tablets instead of textbooks will lower the cost spent on outdated textbooks by $250–$1000 a year per
student. The textbook industry is made up of three companies: McGraw–Hill, Pearson, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. With all companies combined
schools pay around $8 billion a year on textbooks that students do not want to carry nor read. Opposing sides believe that the cost of an electronic
tablet will substantially exceed the price of a textbook. However, tablets are constantly decreasing in price, making them for more affordable that a

The High Price Of Textbooks
As a college degree seems to be the minimum education requirement in today's society for an entry middle class job, the need for textbooks in those
college courses comes along with that. A common issue most college students are faced with is the high price of textbooks.
When it comes to textbooks, there is a conflict of interest between the consumers and publishers. The textbook industry consists of five major
publishers, McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, Thomson Gale and Wiley. Combined they occupy over 80% of the college textbook
market (Staff). As publishers, their goal is to maximize their profit on textbooks. They do this in a number of ways but the most common way is to
release a new edition of the textbook. Often when releasing a new edition there are minor changes to the course material. But regardless of the
changes, by releasing a new edition they are able to drive the price of the old editions down, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for
students to sell their books back. Publishers will release new versions of the book because they only receive profit off of the first sale of the book.
Anytime the book is resold and reused, they receive nothing. Out of every dollar spent on a textbook, 22 Вў will return to the bookstore as profit, 1 Вў
will be for shipping but 77Вў of the 100 goes to the publisher. The publisher then turns around and divides their profit to their expenses, which consists
of marketing, authors and material operations.

The Future Of Digital Textbooks Essay
"Ripe for digital destruction," (A Textbook) were words of the late Steve Jobs referring to the enormous potential for the textbooks industry. He
believed the textbook market to be worth an estimated 8 billion dollars in the U.S. alone. His vision was to lessen the burden of carrying heavy
textbooks around, while also offering them as a free feature with the iPad. He wanted to change the culture of textbooks forever. The essay "What are
the Enablers and Barriers to Successful Adoption and Commercialization of Digital Textbooks," discusses the many benefits and drawback of

Electronic textbooks are more portable and convenient as they can be accessed by a tablet, downloaded onto a computer or accessed via the internet.
The technological benefits available on an electronic textbook are endless. The audio and video capabilities will liven up learning and change the way
students understand and retain the material. The emergence of three–dimensional technology may also play a role in the near future. In addition, digital
textbooks are much more user friendly. Studying for tests will be more efficient as highlighted notes can be easily transferred into electronic note
cards for memorization. The main downside to electronic textbooks is that students will have to purchase a reading device, tablet, laptop or
smartphone in order to view digital textbooks away from home or on the go. Most college students have already made this investment prior to
starting college. The seller of digital textbooks will also be saving money over producing hard copies. 32% of the cost allocated to paper, printing and
editorial can be completely eliminated along with 22.4% of costs related to bookstore operations and personnel. Bookstores as we know them could
become obsolete or transformed into stores that sell tablets, e–readers and software packages on campus. Publishers or sellers will now be able to tap
into a more global market with electronic textbooks as the information can be translated into many languages quickly.

Tablets And Online Textbooks Vs. Traditional Textbooks
Financially, it is more beneficial for districts to purchase tablets and online textbooks compared to traditional textbooks. In order to use school budgets
most efficiently, it is vital that funds are directed towards the most resourceful items for the students. As the state funding for public schools decreases,
this becomes a more prominent concern. Tablets provide a simple fix to the need of a modern, cost saving solution. According to one resource, the
average textbook costs $70 each, verse a 6 year subscription that costs between $38–$55 for an online textbook (Elliot, 2013). This shows that online
textbooks are more cost effective, not only in the long run, but at the time of purchase. The online versions of textbooks are less expensive because
there is not physical material being purchased, whereas traditional textbooks require paper and ink to be produced. Simply using the tablets for
textbooks alone will save districts approximately $15–32 each time a textbook is purchased. For example, tablets cost between $200 and $600 per
student, and provide a plethora of resources (DeNeen, 2012). Although this cost may seem like a lot up front, if the amenities are taken into
consideration, it is more cost effective. For example, a camera alone would cost only a small amount less than a full tablet that includes a camera
which could be used to document class projects or experiments for later reference. Tablets are also equipped with free calculators, allowing school

Along with tuition, housing fees, and other expenses, students are now paying outrageous amounts for textbooks. Textbooks should be free to college

full capacity. Rather, it creates undo stress for the student in his or her studies. This report will show some of the unnecessary adjustments that
accompany, using the older edition. This report will consider other community colleges, and how they, as a general practice, handle assigningtextbooks.
As a supporting argument to the research, the report will consider the market value of the book. The report concludes with recommendations, which I
will propose.
Introduction
This report focuses on the procedure in determining the textbook used in Administration & Organization CJC.215.0008. This semester, the latest
edition was not used. The biggest problem with getting the wrong book is; the time involved in finding the correct material.
Another problem is during exams; the information can become confusing, making it difficult to locate the information that you are looking for. There
is even the possibility of reading the wrong chapter. Issues such as this, distracts from a student's learning ability and creates unnecessary confusion for
a student. The report will also evaluate the cost involved, for the incorrect textbook versus the correct textbook. Many students find difficult to purchase
expensive textbooks; some students are able to sell their textbooks, after each class. Others may

The Pros And Cons Of Textbooks?
Textbooks have been a backbone to teaching since the beginning of compulsory education in the United States in 1852. However, as technology
becomes more prevalent and useful in society, paper textbooks have become a crutch to education. Teachers are depending on paper textbooks and
forcing students to lug around large books that are rarely used in class. Schools are held back by their antiquated paper vices. While textbooks can
serve as a basis for learning, schools should stop checking out books and turn to class sets and online books because paper textbooks can be outdated as
well as heavy and expensive.
When a textbook goes to print it is set in stone; the only way to update it is to print a new edition, and that costs money and time. Electronic
textbooks, however, can be updated very easily. They do not require extra money and usually only take a few minutes to update or download. Schools
can provide up to date information to their students by purchasing electronic textbooks. Neeru Khosla, the executive director of a program that
provides free electronic textbooks to schools, asserted that, "Traditional textbooks are often expensive, rigid, and difficult to update. It is not unusual
for these texts to be out of date before they go to the book binder, leaving many students learning from outdated materials ...." (Khosla). As information
continues to spread faster and faster, the need for schools to have up to date information grows as well. The only way to ensure that

Mathematics And Science Textbooks Manifesto
Mathematics and Science Textbooks Manifesto
Imagine yourself sitting at a table in the library during the finals week, trying to get the most out of a bulky textbook within a limited amount of time.
It feels like you are struggling to escape from a burning flame behind your back; you do not want to fail the tests, but you do not have much time
either... The textbook contains a lot of information, but you cannot get all the knowledge you need from it instantly as you wish. It is like having a
full set of swords in your arsenal, but you can only use an ordinary one to fight with a gigantic monster; that is definitely not an easy task. Reading
lengthy textbooks is absolutely time–consuming, and you will have to sacrifice countless hours of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We should also get rid of confusing or too complicated information. Some textbooks integrate knowledge from other subjects. This is not a
completely bad idea, but these textbooks are not designed solely for people who take various branches of science; for example, solving a physics
problem that is related to atomic numbers of elements could be confusing for students who have never taken chemistry before. Since no one would
want to waste their precious time reading unrelated contents, these textbooks need to be re–written.
We appreciate simplicity and efficiency. We can no longer bear trying to read those wordy textbooks within short time. Using a tiny sword, you would
not be able to beat the notorious monster. It is the time for you to develop a more sophisticated weapon. Students usually create their own summary or
cheat sheets. These student–made works are actually written in the way in which textbooks should be; the content is shortened while the quality is still
maintained. These new representations of information are going to wipe the obsolete ones out. The unwelcoming textbooks are not needed any more
as the new forms of knowledge are more concise and more effective – which are the qualities that most textbooks do not have. We believe in everyone's
potential and their perpetual effect on this world. It is the time to use your own ability to create better textbooks for yourself and the community.
We admire the way nature creates human perception. People

Argumentative Essay On College Textbooks
College Textbooks
College Textbooks are required in nearly all college level courses. A typical student usually buys three to four textbooks for each of his or her classes.
The cost of the college textbooks however, continue to increase in price which results in a variety of problems students must face. Tyler Kingkade a
professional editor and journalist quote that, "College Textbook prices have increased faster than tuition, healthcare costs and housing prices, all of
which have risen faster than inflation." As a result, each year students carry the burden of having to buy textbooks each quarter while acknowledging
the fact that college textbooks continue to increase in price. Colleges should offer its students free books in order to allow ... Show more content on

In the current era, faced with expensive tuition, students are typically taking out loans and grants in order to pay for their tuition. John W. Schoen, an
award winning journalist and economic reporter, in his article "Why does a college degree cost so much?" shows: The average cost of tuition and fees
at a private, non–profit, four–year university this school year was $31,231–up sharply from $1,832 in 1971–1972 (in current dollars). At public,
four–year schools, tuition and fees cost about $9,139 this year. In the 1971 school year, they added up to less than $500 in current dollars, according
to the College Board. (Schoen June 2015) As shown, the average amount a student pays for college tuition is extremely high and to add the price of
textbooks to that budget is unsettling. As a result, students are faced with grim decisions when paying for their tuition as well as the price of college
textbooks. Furthermore, some of the decisions that students make include not buying the textbook altogether. For instance, in a government PIRG
report, "Fixing the Broken Textbook Market," a statistics showcasing students reveals that, "65 percent said they had decided against buying a
textbook because it was too expensive; Nearly half (48 percent) said the cost of books had an impact on how many or which classes they took; 94

Textbook Toil: Online Textbooks
Textbook Toil
When a student gets welcomed into high school, he is gifted with a mountain of expensive textbooks. The money for which most likely comes out of
their parent's pockets indirectly through taxes. These books are inches thick, and weigh 5 pounds or more, and the textbooks, which for the most part
are all carried in the student's backpacks, are rarely used. For the years before the internet, the paperback textbook may have reigned supreme, but we
are now in a modern world, where there are better solutions to this textbook toil: Online Textbooks. Now, the main problem with current school
textbooks is that they are very outdated. They cannot be edited en–masse, and they must be replaced with a new copy, just as expensive, every few
years.
Textbooks are also limited in the information that they hold. They cannot be as thorough as needed due to the size of the textbook. On the other hand,
online textbooks have not a single size restriction. The student is subject to as much information as needed to understand a subject, without the
confusing paraphrasing of current textbooks. Additionally, all copies of an online textbook are in one, centralized... Show more content on

them, and are completely green. Another reason is that current textbooks are sold to a county. The county in turn must pay for all of the textbooks. The
schools themselves may obtain the textbooks debt–free, but the debt goes straight into America's National Debt, which grows every single day. If
online textbooks were used instead of hardback copies, and if everybody in the school had access to a school login and password to the site that holds

Abstract:
Ever since the 1960s, the Texas textbook controversy has had an issue in America. TheTexas school board is meeting to make revisions to their
textbooks and curriculum. But are they also revising history? Educators across the country are watching to see the effect this issue will have on

All of which–plus a natural supply of political eccentrics–helps explain how Texas once had a board member who believed that public schools are the
tool of the devil.
Texas originally acquired its power over the nation's textbook supply because it paid 100 percent of the cost of all public school textbooks, as long as
the books in question came from a very short list of board–approved options. The selection process "was grueling and tension–filled," said Julie
McGee, who worked at high levels in several publishing houses before her retirement. "If you didn't get listed by the state, you got nothing." On the
other side of the coin, David Anderson, who once sold textbooks in the state, said that if a book made the list, even a fairly mediocre salesperson
could count on doing pretty well. The books on the Texas list were likely to be mass–produced by the publisher in anticipation of those sales, so other
states liked to buy them and take advantage of the economies of scale.
"What happens in Texas doesn't stay in Texas when it comes to textbooks," said Dan Quinn, who worked as an editor of social studies textbooks before
joining the Texas Freedom Network, which was founded by Governor Ann Richards's daughter, Cecile, to counter the religious right.
The cost for the Texas textbooks?
As a market, the state was so big and influential that national publishers tended to gear their books toward whatever it wanted. Back in

The Pros And Cons Of College Textbooks
Every year, students across campus stare in disgust at the college textbook list. At some point, every student has a bad encounter with the horrors of
having to obtain the bound pieces of dead tree. Textbooks are very complicated when it comes to purchasing them, the prices seem to fluctuate as well,

everyone involved in the process.
In this project, I hope to focus on the difficulties in obtaining textbooks. Specifically, I want to discuss the ever rising and ridiculous prices. The

Online Textbooks Vs Digital Textbooks
In today's society, everyone's life revolves around the internet. Online networking has completely transformed how individuals communicate, socialize,
and make connections. Therefore, it is no surprise that the internet has profoundly affected many educational platforms as well as social ones.
Numerous publishing companies around the world have begun to create "e–textbooks" – textbooks that are available online to download. School
administrators and educators have debated whether purchasing electronics for academic use is a more practical option to the physical alternative. While
digital textbooks have many benefits, the challenges that arise as a result of their over–complicated nature make their implementation in schools less
than ideal.
Although numerous high school and college students claim that digital textbooks have revolutionized means of learning, studies have shown that far
more students disagree. Michael Schaub, writer for the Los Angeles Times, states, "According to a new study, 92% of college students would rather do
their reading the old–fashioned way, with pages and not pixels." Although these online documents have advantages, the negative aspects are often more
prominent. Traditional textbooks are the better option, because they lack the issues associated with online textbooks such as distractions, eye strain,
and reliability.

There is competition amongst Mcgraw–hill and Pearson and other big companies to make a profit and stay in business, there is competition with new
entrants in both textbook and etextbook companies, There is also a competition of innovation and which company will meet its target audience's

textbook companies business. Of the five forces of competition I believe that the competitive pressures associated among rival sellers in the industry is
the strongest. I do not believe that of the five forces there is a weak one.

The factors that are driving change the textbook industry are the amount of technology that is used amongst students today such as ipads, kindles and

When you present the institution of slavery as "workers" you are sugar coating or brushing off the brutality of slavery and racism. Presenting them as
other than a group of people who were brought here against their will, who had to endure the most barbaric, inhumane and torturous enslavement of

that textbook company publishers tend to "mystify" the reason why the south seceded. Largely because "they don't want to offend school districts
and lose sales". When you have textbook companies not wanting to really emphasize that racism, slavery and White Supremacy in the south during
the 1800s was one of the biggest and most prominent parts of why the Civil War started, rather they emphasize that it was about States' Rights, and
that's the reason why the south seceded. Not that it was about the preservation of slavery. With textbooks like this you get 41% of Americans
believing the cause of the Civil War was not slavery, where as the other 54% believe it is about slavery, from a recent national poll from History Class

the differences in attitudes and perceptions of teachers on content, motivational aspects, and cultural values in textbooks.

The danger with the ready–made textbooks is that they can seem to absolve teachers of responsibility. Instead of participating in the day–to–day
decisions that have to be made about what to teach and how to teach and operate the system, secure in the belief that the wise and virtuous people who
produce the textbook knew what was good for us. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. (Swan, 1992)
The statement summarises the significant deficiencies of the textbooks. They do not only inhibit the teacher creativity with ready–made packages of
resources, but they also present 'poor compromises between what is educationally desirable and financially viable' (Sheldon, 1988, p.237). The
anti–textbook argument puts forward that, with the increased popularity, the global textbooks have become even more oppressive, turning the language
learning into a 'standardised language content that results in marketable improvements' (Hadley, 2014,p. 209–10). The most outspoken opponents of

Issues Over the Costs Of Textbooks
People have seen and despise the prices for used and brand new textbooks. There are many websites, stores, and companies that sell textbooks at a
biased price. The books being sold are variety to depend on the dealer rather than optimizing to society's opinion, costs must be decided depending on
the quality of the textbook.
Stores and companies need to open choices looking at publicity views: when the original price of a book costs $54.44, the used low quality price of
the same book would only be few dollars less than the actual text book, not even close to half of the price of the original. With the aim of reselling
books, online book buyers buy textbooks and sometimes other types of books for a profit. Online book buyers operate year–round like online
marketplaces to give students the opportunity to sell their books even when campus "buyback" periods are not in effect. Students receive a price quote
or offer by simply entering the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) number of the books they wish to sell. To allow students selling multiple
books to the same source, these online book buyers often offer free shipping; which in actuality is built into the offer for the book. Nonetheless, prices
are still based on biased company and seller opinions.
Qualities for textbook are another reason for why prices should decrease in stores. At any given point of time, a book value of equity per share (BVPS)
is a good measure of the value of a stockholder' residual claim. BVPS

Advantages Of Traditional Print Textbooks
With the advance of science and technology, there is a trend that people increase using electronic textbooks. It has been playing an increasingly
important role in our lives. This essay will focus on discussing whether electronic textbooks are better than traditional print textbooks.
First, students using electronic textbooks in school can lighten a part of the burden of carrying heavy traditional print textbooks. One of the e–Books
functions is that it can condense the contents of traditional print textbooks. Since students in Malaysia need to bring a number of textbooks to schools

provide sufficient power outlets for students, they will not able to use the electronic textbooks in lesson continuously. As a result, they may difficult to

Writing is said to be a method of representing language in visual or tactile form (Online 5). And more important it is a skill of marking coherent
words on paper and composing text (Online 6). There are many reasons why writing is important, for example, the ability to express one's thoughts
and ideas, communicative competence (letters), also it serves as a record, as in expressing one's ideas for future references (Online 6). There are
different types of writing – writing to inform, educational writing, writing to entertain, persuasive writing and motivational writing (Online 7). To
improve writing skills there are some essential instructions that need to be performed – research, think, organize, write, edit, revise, relax (Online 7).
Two writing exercises are included into the unit 12 of the "Advanced English C.A.E." The first exercise is writing an article (~250 words) about an

The Current Practices Of The Textbook Industry Drive Up...
Textbooks are getting more expensive as the years go by, publishers add extra materials to raise prices, and new editions are published frequently,
often with little to no real content change. These problems are even worse today, as the cost of books keeps rising to the point where some students
will decline to take a class due to the cost of the material. A 2004 study by the California Student Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) along
with the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG), called "Ripoff 101: How the current practices of the textbook industry drive up the
cost of college textbooks," confirmed this problem. A survey polling the most widely assigned textbooks at 10 public universities in California and
Oregon, and interviews were done with 156 faculty members and 521 students on the cost of textbooks and purchasing habits. (Fairchild 4). Despite the
rising costs of printing and shipping due to inflation, publishers are artificially causing the cost of textbooks to rise to line their own pockets with
profit and it will harm lower to middle income students ' education. Textbook prices have been on the rise since the late 1970s. A book that would
have cost 25 dollars in 1978 had risen in cost to 208 dollars in 2013, an increase of 812 percent (Follett 1), and with an 82 percent increase between
the years of 2002 and 2013 (Sennack 6). This is a higher increase in the price percentage wise than medical care, housing, and even the consumer

College Textbooks: A Case Study
With college textbooks on the rise, there is no wonder that college students are skipping out on buying books for classes or skipping certain classes
altogether. The cost of college books has increased by three times the rate of inflation, about 1,041 percent. Colleges need to find a solution to
textbook prices before it gets even more out of hand.
Over the last decade, the price of college textbooks has increased by 88 percent, over 25 percent more than the rise in cost of tuition and fees. The
college board has estimated that an average college student will spend around 1,249 dollars for the 2015–16 school year on textbooks alone. The main
individuals these prices are affecting are college students.
As students are faced with rising book costs, many won't buy textbooks. The student public interest research groups are an organization which
organizes college students to solve pressing public interest problems. A survey conducted by Student PIRG's showed that 1,905 undergraduates on 13
different campuses, 2 and 4 year pubic colleges, 70 percent of the students decided to not buy the textbooks they needed for class because they were

degree attainment and job preparation. If students can't afford the books for their classes, especially for their specific degree, how will they set

The Problem Of Textbooks Prices
During the Spring semester of 2017, I completed my Applied Field Experience in the state's largest student–run nonprofit organization, New Jersey
Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG). I worked on the "Making Textbooks More Affordable" campaign, which addressed the problem of
prohibitively high textbooks prices.
A survey that involved more than 2,000 college students in 33 states and 156 different campuses finds out that average student spends $1,200 each year
on textbooks and supplies alone, which equals to 39 percent of tuition and fees at a community college, and 14 percent of tuition and fees at a
four–year public university (Bidwell, 2014). Moreover, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of textbook has ... Show more

Eventually, students still have to endure the excessively high price of textbooks. So, how to reduce the price of textbooks fundamentally should be
taken into consideration.
NJPIRG came up with the idea of "Open and Affordable Textbook" (OAT) Project since 2014. They asserted that universities should found the
project by letting professors adopting open and free textbooks for their classes, so students can save money on textbooks. Open textbooks are
defined as textbooks "have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed while download for no cost. These books
have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality" (Open Textbook Library). Many colleges and
universities in America have successful open textbooks program for reference, including the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Kansas State
University, Tacoma Community College and the University of Maryland, and so on.
After two years of effort, NJPIRG successfully persuade the Rutgers University to launch the OAT Project to protect students' interest. In spring 2017,
the first cycle of the OAT Project was implemented by Rutgers Library. According to the library, "thirty
–two grants of $1,000 each were awarded to
faculty and instructors across the system who chose to adopt, remix, or create a free or low cost textbook, as an alternative to traditional course

I'm here today to help find some ways we can reduce the cost so more people can chase their dream job. The reason textbooks are so pricey is due to
the fact that there aren't many publishers creating these books, resulting in publishers jacking up the prices. So like I just said, the average student
in the U.S spends around $1,200 on books alone each year. That is crazy considering you have to pay for the class and all of the other classes and
books for those classes. Let's rewind the clock some years back. In the 1970's, college textbooks did not cost that much but now the cost has risen
over 961 percent since then. To understand it a bit more, that is 3 times the rate of inflation. The cost of textbooks is increasing rapidly, one book costs
between $200–$300. That is just for one book alone, imagine if you need 2 books for every class you are taking that semester or year. A way we
could theoretically reduce the cost of textbooks would be by not buying any, forcing the publishers to drop the price. Another way would be if someone
entered into that business and sold the same books for less, the other would

College Textbook Cost

  • 1. College Textbook Cost The Effect of College Textbook Costs The burden of the expensive college textbooks has many effects on students and their pockets. Many students experience the dilemma of paying for the class, but also they are unable to pay for required books. The issue of not having the specified book may affect the students work and participation in class. Without a doubt high pricedtextbooks add difficultly in passing a course, but there are alternatives for students. The excessive price of these college textbooks often aid students in their difficultly in passing an information course, yet there are possible al–ternatives for students, such as used books or lecture classes, but the most convenient is Chegg. A few problems addressed with high priced... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additional–ly, they have to transition around their needs, which may lead to new jobs or auxiliary loans. All of these factors hamper students, and even direct them to drop the course. The high priced text–books benefit book–stores, but not the consumers, who heavily rely on certain books to pass rig–orous courses. However, there are alternatives available the students can rely on, such as online textbooks or used textbooks. The best alternative is to buy the book available on Chegg, new or used at a reasonable price. The decisions are now left on students to either find a way to pay for the books, use an alternative, or abandon the class. Textbook prices truly affect students; they are not able to use the book if they are not able to obtain the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Tablets Vs. Textbooks "Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture" (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stephanie Hedge emphasizes that ". Tablets can use polling and clicker technology, whiteboard projection, and more. A single tablet has the potential to replace a suite of technologies, and is perfect for classrooms without much technology support" (parag.5).According to this evidence, tablets can have multiple purposes. Tablets can be used as a device for video and audio interaction. This eliminates or removes a lifeless environment that is now current in the classroom. .According to the University Of Washington" Course management tools such as Canvas allow instructors to organize all the resources students need for a class (e.g. syllabi, assignments, readings, online quizzes), provide valuable grading tools, and create spaces for discussion, document sharing, and video and audio commentary. All courses are automatically given a Canvas site" (parag.7).This rebuttable university believes that tablets are a great way to stay organized. This allows teacher to better manage their grading system, therefore allowing them to be more aware of whether the student passing or failing. To sum up, teachers who used technology as a way to teach students end up establishing a better learning environment. Tablets would be the better alternative as compared to the printed versions of class work. According to Andre McNeil "when you consider that certain sites sell textbooks of a much cheaper price: E–books still will be the more affordable options. Quick review of ... • 3. Rising Cost of College Textbooks Ask any college student to state one of their largest expenses and it would be safe to bet the response would be "Textbook prices!" The cost of purchasing required materials for courses has reached numbers high enough to cause many students to take out second loans. Information released this year by the American Enterprise Institute shows that "College textbook prices have increased faster than tuition, health care costs and housing prices, all of which have risen faster than inflation" (Kingkade, 2013). This information equates to an 812% increase in the cost of college textbooks over what they were just over thirty years ago (Kingkade, 2013). The figure here shows an unusually large increase that has far outpaced that of average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new package costs $208.65, a nearly thirty dollar increase from the summer session. What this meant for those unfortunate students was they were now $180.00 more in debt. Again, the University of Delaware should not be putting students in the position of purchasing required textbook packages which they will be unable to sell back. By looking at these examples in the bigger picture, the vicious cycle created by publishers becomes evident. Students find themselves forced to buy the books the professors assign, they must buy them new in order to get special access codes, and then they have difficulty selling the books back. Not to mention the fact that the release of newer editions can leave many students stuck with a book they do not want and more debt they cannot afford. This cycle created by publishers works by continuously finding new ways to charge students full price for textbooks while simultaneously finding ways to release newer editions on an almost semester–by–semester basis. The result: increased textbook prices and an increasing financial burden on students. The question has become how can one best break this cycle and avoid putting themselves even deeper into debt? Students have begun finding their own solutions, some clever while others are illegal. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Textbooks Vs Textbooks In Textbooks Portable technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom have become such a norm in today's society, and students and parents are believing that this is a good thing. Are they really considering all of the effects of technology and how often it is being used? What is it doing to the education in schools? Chou et al. states that as of 2012, there were over 2000 school districts that have adopted different types of electronical devices and this amount is "growing rapidly" (11). According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, that is about 11,000 schools as of 2000. If this trend continues, almost all schools will have switched to using technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom. Teachers and administrators believe that this technology increase has helped students learn more effectively, and more importantly, they believe that it is more cost effective than staying with the hard copy textbooks. Teachers in K–12 schools should continue to use traditional textbooks instead of replacing them with tablets because of the student's ability to retain more information, have a lesser chance of being distracted, and the cost effectiveness of staying with textbooks. One important reason to stay with traditional textbooks is that students retain information more effectively when they read from print rather than reading from a screen. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Cost Of Textbooks As every incoming freshman begins their preparation for moving day, one major task is always at the top of the to–do list. That task is buying textbooks. Most families dread this task because of the unnecessarily high price of each textbook they will have to purchase. Granted colleges and universities have developed some ways to lower the price on textbooks, such as buying used or renting, but the families are still stuck paying hundreds of dollars on books each semester that some professors will use a handful of times. The price of attending college is already high enough, so why put more burden on the student and their family by making them buy these outrageously expensive textbooks. The cost of college textbooks has progressively increased, at an unnecessarily rapid pace, and costing college bound students large amounts of money that can accumulate to a large chunk of tuition that is added on top of the cost of attendance. This chunk of money can add up to about 20 percent of in state public school's tuition (University Business). This is a large percentage for students to pay on top of the costs of attendance, but that's not the worst of it. Students that attend community colleges pay about 72 percent of tuition in addition to cost of attendance on textbooks. This percentage is even more staggering, even though community colleges cost less overall, the students are still getting hit with a huge bill for their textbooks (Dervarics). Not only do textbooks cost students large sums of money, but the rate at which the Prichard 1 prices are increasing are blistering. According to an article written by Charles Dervarics, the GAO (Government Accountability Office) reported that from 1986 to 2007 the price of textbooks annually increased at a rate that doubled that of inflation. This is yet another mind– blowing statistic as the price of textbooks was growing faster than the U.S economy. This same report was put into an article written by David Zhou. One might say that it is not necessary to buy the textbooks, but statistics show that those who do not buy the textbook perform significantly worse than those who did buy the book (Zhou). Another problem with the prices of textbooks is that there is a discrepancy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Number Of Reserve Textbooks At The Library Number of Reserve Textbooks at the Library Traci is a student in the fall semester at Tyler Junior college. She is from India and still very new to the American Education System. English is not her first language, but she is extremely grateful going to college in America and having her childhood dream come true. This importance swells considerably if the teacher believes that text books should be central to any course. For this reason, Soleimani and Ghaderi (2013, p. 44) contend that a textbook evaluation is a key task that should be undertaken by teachers but the question that is posed is what the best approach to evaluation is? They note the two stage model proposed by McDonough (2003), as has been discussed within this paper as well as the notion of coding in order that the evaluation is appropriately systematic. Indeed, Soleimani and Ghaderi (2013) add to this the notion of a checklist so that aspects within all areas of the book are adequately evaluated. Keshta and Seif (2013) discuss the existing literature with regard to course material evaluation and decide that a qualitative approach is the most likely to elicit the most accurate results. • 15. Textbooks Vs Textbooks Technology nowadays has become bigger and bigger. New watches, computers, and phones are being bought every day. Some devices like IPads, Computers, and tablets are being used in the classroom. But is this really a good way to educate students? Students and teachers should focus less on technology and use textbooks. One reason that textbooks should be used is because handheld technological devices including tablets are associated with a wide range of health problems. According to the American Optometric Association, such issues like headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, and dry eyes, are all factors of "Computer Vision Syndrome".The syndrome can cause bumps in learning, and having issues with health everyday is not a good way to be learning. People who use electronic devices more often have a hard time focusing because of all the screen time they are having. This shows that textbooks have a great advantage on learning because they do not cause health issues like headaches, eyestrain, dry eyes, and blurred vision when using them. Another reason that textbooks should be used is because using tablets and electronical devices is more expensive than using print textbooks. Not only do schools have to pay for wifi, insurance, and hardware. But they also have to pay to use the online textbooks (e–textbooks). Lee Wilson, a prominent education marketing expert, says that implementation costs for online textbooks on iPad tablets are 552% higher than new print textbooks in an average high school. As technology keeps growing, the more and more the devices will start to cost, resulting in low money in schools. Wilson estimates that the annual cost per student per class with tablets to be $71.55 vs. $14.26 for print textbooks. This shows that textbooks are less money and are easier to use in the classroom. Next, textbooks should be used because students who read print text comprehend more, remember more, and learn more than those who read digital text. The brain interprets printed and digital text in different ways, and people generally read digital text 20–30% slower than print. Textbooks are much easier to read because they are on paper, and the "Computer Vision Syndrome" is not in tact while reading off of paper. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The idea of tablets in the classroom is supported by teachers and students around the country. They believe that tablets would be more effective for learning purposes and improve standardized testing. In the U.S over 8 billion dollars are spent on outdated textbooks each year. The High Price Of Textbooks As a college degree seems to be the minimum education requirement in today's society for an entry middle class job, the need for textbooks in those college courses comes along with that. A common issue most college students are faced with is the high price of textbooks. When it comes to textbooks, there is a conflict of interest between the consumers and publishers. The textbook industry consists of five major publishers, McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, Thomson Gale and Wiley. Combined they occupy over 80% of the college textbook market (Staff). As publishers, their goal is to maximize their profit on textbooks. They do this in a number of ways but the most common way is to release a new edition of the textbook. Often when releasing a new edition there are minor changes to the course material. But regardless of the changes, by releasing a new edition they are able to drive the price of the old editions down, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for students to sell their books back. Publishers will release new versions of the book because they only receive profit off of the first sale of the book. Anytime the book is resold and reused, they receive nothing. Out of every dollar spent on a textbook, 22 Вў will return to the bookstore as profit, 1 Вў will be for shipping but 77Вў of the 100 goes to the publisher. • 19. Tablets And Online Textbooks Vs. Traditional Textbooks Financially, it is more beneficial for districts to purchase tablets and online textbooks compared to traditional textbooks. In order to use school budgets most efficiently, it is vital that funds are directed towards the most resourceful items for the students. As the state funding for public schools decreases, this becomes a more prominent concern. Tablets provide a simple fix to the need of a modern, cost saving solution. According to one resource, the average textbook costs $70 each, verse a 6 year subscription that costs between $38–$55 for an online textbook (Elliot, 2013). This shows that online textbooks are more cost effective, not only in the long run, but at the time of purchase. The online versions of textbooks are less expensive because there is not physical material being purchased, whereas traditional textbooks require paper and ink to be produced. Simply using the tablets for textbooks alone will save districts approximately $15–32 each time a textbook is purchased. For example, tablets cost between $200 and $600 per student, and provide a plethora of resources (DeNeen, 2012). Although this cost may seem like a lot up front, if the amenities are taken into consideration, it is more cost effective. However, as technology becomes more prevalent and useful in society, paper textbooks have become a crutch to education. Teachers are depending on paper textbooks and forcing students to lug around large books that are rarely used in class. Schools are held back by their antiquated paper vices. Texas Textbook Controversy ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Texas textbook controversy– Analysis Kim Stevenson Eastern New Mexico University CI 531 1WW March 3, 2013– Abstract: Ever since the 1960s, the Texas textbook controversy has had an issue in America. TheTexas school board is meeting to make revisions to their textbooks and curriculum. But are they also revising history? Educators across the country are watching to see the effect this issue will have on students. All of which–plus a natural supply of political eccentrics–helps explain how Texas once had a board member who believed that public schools are the tool of the devil. Texas originally acquired its power over the nation's textbook supply because it paid 100 percent of the cost of all public school textbooks, as long as the books in question came from a very short list of board–approved options. The selection process "was grueling and tension–filled," said Julie McGee, who worked at high levels in several publishing houses before her retirement. "If you didn't get listed by the state, you got nothing." On the other side of the coin, David Anderson, who once sold textbooks in the state, said that if a book made the list, even a fairly mediocre salesperson could count on doing pretty well. The books on the Texas list were likely to be mass–produced by the publisher in anticipation of those sales, so other states liked to buy them and take advantage of the economies of scale. "What happens in Texas doesn't stay in Texas when it comes to textbooks," said Dan Quinn, who worked as an editor of social studies textbooks before joining the Texas Freedom Network, which was founded by Governor Ann Richards's daughter, Cecile, to counter the religious right. The cost for the Texas textbooks? As a market, the state was so big and influential that national publishers tended to gear their books toward whatever it wanted. Back in

At some point, every student has a bad encounter with the horrors of having to obtain the bound pieces of dead tree. Textbooks are very complicated when it comes to purchasing them, the prices seem to fluctuate as well, either costing normal money or an arm and a leg. • 30. Online Textbooks Vs Digital Textbooks In today's society, everyone's life revolves around the internet. Online networking has completely transformed how individuals communicate, socialize, and make connections. Therefore, it is no surprise that the internet has profoundly affected many educational platforms as well as social ones. Numerous publishing companies around the world have begun to create "e–textbooks" – textbooks that are available online to download. School administrators and educators have debated whether purchasing electronics for academic use is a more practical option to the physical alternative. While digital textbooks have many benefits, the challenges that arise as a result of their over–complicated nature make their implementation in schools less than ideal. Although numerous high school and college students claim that digital textbooks have revolutionized means of learning, studies have shown that far more students disagree. Michael Schaub, writer for the Los Angeles Times, states, "According to a new study, 92% of college students would rather do their reading the old–fashioned way, with pages and not pixels." Although these online documents have advantages, the negative aspects are often more prominent. Traditional textbooks are the better option, because they lack the issues associated with online textbooks such as distractions, eye strain, and reliability. Alia Wong points out in her article History Class and the Fictions about Race in America the topics of underqualified teachers, inaccurate textbooks and the inefficacy of history being taught at all grade levels. I, myself, can attest to this statement having been taught history by a teacher who taught from an extremely outdated textbook. I taught myself by quietly reading in every class. Presenting them as other than a group of people who were brought here against their will, who had to endure the most barbaric, inhumane and torturous enslavement of their kind. How is this lack of accurate representation of slavery and White Supremacy ok to leave out of our History textbooks? I agree with Wong that textbook company publishers tend to "mystify" the reason why the south seceded. Largely because "they don't want to offend school districts and lose sales". When you have textbook companies not wanting to really emphasize that racism, slavery and White Supremacy in the south during the 1800s was one of the biggest and most prominent parts of why the Civil War started, rather they emphasize that it was about States' Rights, and that's the reason why the south seceded. Not that it was about the preservation of slavery. • 33. Anti Textbook Versus Pro Textbook Anti–Textbook versus Pro–Textbook This section will develop an insight into textbooks debate from content, cultural and motivational points of view as the major distinguishing factors of two opposing arguments. The three factors will also be the major discussion points of the research objectives of this study, which will be underlined by the differences in attitudes and perceptions of teachers on content, motivational aspects, and cultural values in textbooks. Content The danger with the ready–made textbooks is that they can seem to absolve teachers of responsibility. Instead of participating in the day–to–day decisions that have to be made about what to teach and how to teach and operate the system, secure in the belief that the wise and virtuous people who produce the textbook knew what was good for us. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. (Swan, 1992) The statement summarises the significant deficiencies of the textbooks. They do not only inhibit the teacher creativity with ready–made packages of resources, but they also present 'poor compromises between what is educationally desirable and financially viable' (Sheldon, 1988, p.237). The anti–textbook argument puts forward that, with the increased popularity, the global textbooks have become even more oppressive, turning the language learning into a 'standardised language content that results in marketable improvements' (Hadley, 2014,p. 209–10). There are many websites, stores, and companies that sell textbooks at a biased price. The books being sold are variety to depend on the dealer rather than optimizing to society's opinion, costs must be decided depending on the quality of the textbook. Stores and companies need to open choices looking at publicity views: when the original price of a book costs $54.44, the used low quality price of the same book would only be few dollars less than the actual text book, not even close to half of the price of the original. With the aim of reselling books, online book buyers buy textbooks and sometimes other types of books for a profit. Online book buyers operate year–round like online marketplaces to give students the opportunity to sell their books even when campus "buyback" periods are not in effect. Students receive a price quote or offer by simply entering the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) number of the books they wish to sell. To allow students selling multiple books to the same source, these online book buyers often offer free shipping; which in actuality is built into the offer for the book. Nonetheless, prices are still based on biased company and seller opinions. Qualities for textbook are another reason for why prices should decrease in stores. One of the e–Books functions is that it can condense the contents of traditional print textbooks. • 39. The Current Practices Of The Textbook Industry Drive Up... Textbooks are getting more expensive as the years go by, publishers add extra materials to raise prices, and new editions are published frequently, often with little to no real content change. These problems are even worse today, as the cost of books keeps rising to the point where some students will decline to take a class due to the cost of the material. A 2004 study by the California Student Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) along with the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG), called "Ripoff 101: How the current practices of the textbook industry drive up the cost of college textbooks," confirmed this problem. A survey polling the most widely assigned textbooks at 10 public universities in California and Oregon, and interviews were done with 156 faculty members and 521 students on the cost of textbooks and purchasing habits. (Fairchild 4). Despite the rising costs of printing and shipping due to inflation, publishers are artificially causing the cost of textbooks to rise to line their own pockets with profit and it will harm lower to middle income students ' education. Textbook prices have been on the rise since the late 1970s. Over the last decade, the price of college textbooks has increased by 88 percent, over 25 percent more than the rise in cost of tuition and fees. The main individuals these prices are affecting are college students. As students are faced with rising book costs, many won't buy textbooks. The student public interest research groups are an organization which organizes college students to solve pressing public interest problems. The Problem Of Textbooks Prices During the Spring semester of 2017, I completed my Applied Field Experience in the state's largest student–run nonprofit organization, New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG). A survey that involved more than 2,000 college students in 33 states and 156 different campuses finds out that average student spends $1,200 each year on textbooks and supplies alone, which equals to 39 percent of tuition and fees at a community college, and 14 percent of tuition and fees at a four–year public university (Bidwell, 2014). Eventually, students still have to endure the excessively high price of textbooks. So, how to reduce the price of textbooks fundamentally should be taken into consideration. NJPIRG came up with the idea of "Open and Affordable Textbook" (OAT) Project since 2014. They asserted that universities should found the project by letting professors adopting open and free textbooks for their classes, so students can save money on textbooks. Open textbooks are defined as textbooks "have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed while download for no cost. These books have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality" (Open Textbook Library). Many colleges and universities in America have successful open textbooks program for reference, including the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Kansas State University, Tacoma Community College and the University of Maryland, and so on. After two years of effort, NJPIRG successfully persuade the Rutgers University to launch the OAT Project to protect students' interest. In spring 2017, the first cycle of the OAT Project was implemented by Rutgers Library. • 42. Persuasive Essay On Cost Of Textbooks Everyone strives to go to college and get a degree in something they love to do. There is just one small problem in the way of many people's dreams, college textbooks. Now at first it sounds pretty dumb until you see that the average student in the U.S spends about $1,200 on textbooks each year. One textbook can go up to $200, that's just one textbook in one class. I'm here today to help find some ways we can reduce the cost so more people can chase their dream job. The reason textbooks are so pricey is due to the fact that there aren't many publishers creating these books, resulting in publishers jacking up the prices. So like I just said, the average student in the U.S spends around $1,200 on books alone each year. That is crazy considering you have to pay for the class and all of the other classes and books for those classes. Let's rewind the clock some years back. In the 1970's, college textbooks did not cost that much but now the cost has risen over 961 percent since then. To understand it a bit more, that is 3 times the rate of inflation. The cost of textbooks is increasing rapidly, one book costs between $200–$300. That is just for one book alone, imagine if you need 2 books for every class you are taking that semester or year. A way we could theoretically reduce the cost of textbooks would be by not buying any, forcing the publishers to drop the price. Another way would be if someone entered into that business and sold the same books for less, the other would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
