Tourism and hospitality industry is a large industry where cross cultural incidents are always an
issue. A comparative study between Chinese and American culture will be made in social and
business context followed by a theoretical approach using cultural dimensions to explain the
differences among the cultures. The results will be used to suggest and recommend methods to

Social behaviour and business etiquettes between Chinese and Americans are very different and
often will offend each other. The cultural dimensions of Hofstede and Trompenaars will be applied
to evaluate the cultural difference between Chinese and Americans in later part of the discussion.
These theories allow managers or relevant users to identify and rectify the problems that might have
arisen due to a cultural clash.
3.0 Cultural awareness for tourism and hospitality
The tourism and hospitality industry is expected to have a rise of 4.2% in GDP per year which is
estimated to reach US$9.2 trillion by 2021. On top of that, statistics shows that "10% of the worker
on the planet will be employed in Travel & Tourism and related sectors" (WTTC 2011 cited in
LesRoches 2011). The world is ever–changing and globalization is taking place. Globalization is a
worldwide integration and development of nations whereby all nations share a certain element in
common. For instance, English is the most widely used language in the world where English is
actually not the mother tongue for more than half of the world's population. Nations are working
together to produce a better tomorrow. However, it is also debated that globalization has led to the
loss of individual cultural identities. Giles & Middleton (2008:149) state that global tourism is

What Is The Corgers Of Marriott International And Starwood...
Hotel owners and Franchises:
Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts both have different unique selling points
enabling them to become large hotel companies. With the merger, both companies will combine
their unique qualities to encourage efficiency as well as new hotel developments. These
improvements may be able to increase profitability enabling owners to have increase in their
revenue (Bethesda, 2016). Due to the large increase in customer base and owning multiple
properties all over the world, competition certainly has reduced as a result. Thus, this may lead to
monopolization of certain hotel markets increasing profits for existing hotel owners and franchises
(Butler, 2016). In addition, as both companies already have their own wide company portfolio and
brands, in the long term Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resort can take advantage
of the opportunity to explore variety of brands within the expansion of their brand families. The
exponential increase in their market power and data access may lead to increase in their economies
of scale, further increasing their profitability. In addition, the increase market power means the
companies will have stronger bargaining power against OTAs, resulting in lower booking fees.
Therefore, the reduction in their cost and increasing their appearance on the OTAs being more
exposed to potential customers which may further increase their profitability as well as marketing
power (Butler, 2016).

International Hospitality Industry Has Been Affected By...
Introduction In the past few years, international hospitality industry has been affected by
globalisation, revolution of information technology, fragmentation of customer demand, and the
emergence of economic integration of supplier in the networks. Globalisation means a process to
reduce the barriers between one country to another (Brotherthon, 2003). Hence, it is a critical issue
in the industry where the essence of the product is international and the encounter with the customer
is intercultural. The hospitality industry has often been called as "people business" (Downling et al.,
2008). Therefore, Human Resource Management (HRM) plays a crucial role in the industry as it
understands the human aspects on the organisation. HRM deals with people in the organisation–
how to manage their behaviour and activities in order to increase the organisation 's profit. It has the
function in the organisation to focus on recruiting the management and providing directions for the
people in the organisations. Moreover, it deals with issues related to people, such as performance
management, hiring, wellness, benefit, safety, compensation, training, and communication (Hayes &
Ninemeler, 2009). HRM is one of the phenomenon which has property to change under
globalisation effect. It is both and academic theory and business practice. From the HRM
perspective, an international hospitality industry is a caricature, where in reality derived from the

Hospitality Management At Florida International University
INTRODUCTION
According to Professor Marcel R. Escoffier, an Associate Professor in the School of Hospitality and
Tourism Management at Florida International University, Hospitality Management is the largest
business activity in the world. There are nearly 1 million food service operations in the United
States, and nearly three hundred thousand hotels. It is estimated that there are over 1 million hotels
and more than 7 million food service businesses. How this business operates, and its impact on the
local economy varies from country to country, but its importance is undeniable (Escoffier).

Many colleges that offer Hospitality Management may also include the option to enroll within a
specific concentration, so that you may gain a "specialty". Therefore it's important to have a sense of
what area of hospitality you are interested in, so that you enroll yourself into an appropriate
program, including programs where graduates have been able to secure employment in your
interested field and location. For example, if you have the desire to work as a ski lodge manager,
you may want to make sure you enroll into a school that provides the focus of the hotel industry and
potential internship opportunities within ski country vs. the beaches in Florida.
In effort to continue a higher learning education within the field of Hospitality, which may increase
my career options as I enter the workforce, I have reviewed three colleges within the New York
State area that provides a Bachelor's degree within Hospitality Management. The purpose of this
evaluation and comparison is to provide the most feasible and economic option available for me to
pursue a Bachelor Degree within Hospitality in a timely fashion and at minimal cost. Therefore my
criteria for this comparison includes the following:
Type of Concentration that is offered
Tuition Cost
Acceptance of Transferred Credits
Testing/Entrance Requirement (i.e. GPA, GRE, Math Requirement)
Career Track Opportunities & Accreditations

Due to the changes and intense job conditions labor unions began to form in an effort to bargain for
better rights. Strikes took place, resulting in conflict between workers and employers. The most
influential of the unions being created at the time was the American Federation of Labor union due
to its focus on higher wages and improved working conditions for its members. Miners in the
mining industry were faced with long working hours, unsafe working conditions and were poorly
paid. Most lived in company towers where doctors, schools, and law enforcement were provided by
the actual companies in an effort to control the workers. "Companies maintained an oppressive
working environment, prohibiting workers from talking or gathering, to discourage the creation of
unions." (Habashi, 2011) In 1890 the Unite Mine Workers of America was founded representing
workers in the mining sector that fought for collective bargaining. During 1933 and 1936, President
Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" was created protecting the rights of labor unions and prohibited
employers from firing workers who took part in union activities. Labor Unions Today The work
force has become extremely competitive over the past decade due to the drop in the economy. Union

Asset Light Strategies Are the Only Way Ahead for...
Topic 6: "Asset light strategies are the only way ahead for international hospitality companies."
In the topic asset light strategies refers to international hospitality companies owning less assets.
Assets are "items of economic value owned by an individual or corporation, especially that which
could be converted to cash" (www.investorwords.com). The various different strategies international
hospitality companies use in order to 'lighten' their assets could be by franchising, management
contracts and offshoring (also known as outsourcing). Each of these strategies will be explained in
depth throughout the essay. The reason why businesses would want to have fewer assets is because

However by hospitality companies using management contracts to run companies then they can gain
from economies of scale, gain brand recognition and obtain a global reservation system.
Alternatively there are some downfalls to management contracts such as conflict of interest
(Outcome and behaviour control).
"Outsourcing is a business process term for what has literally become known as hiring a consultant,
independent contractor, or freelancer to do a specific task or tasks for an organization in which the
organization either does not have the time or the expertise to do on their own"
(www.internetbasedmoms.com). Outsourcing is commonly said to be the same as offshoring but
with the increase in globalisation the distinction between the two has and will become less overtime.
Outsourcing is commonly used in business segments such as real estate management, human
resources, facilities, accounting, information technology and in this case in the hospitality industry.

The Case Of Hilton Worldwide
Nowadays, many hospitality organizations are created and each company has its own advantages
that lead to success. One of the factors that support the growth of the company is motivating its
employees. The aim of this report is to see why employee motivation is important and how the
hospitality organizations motive its people. The findings of previous studies show that ways to
encourages employees to work hard are having appropriate human resource management policies
and practices. In case of Hilton Worldwide, the company provides many programs for employees
which help to make better working environment and give opportunities to improve themselves.
Although the organization achieves to develop employee quality, the services that offer to its

The Importance Of The Hospitality Industry
With globalization and increasing interconnectedness between countries, today's organizations
operate in a rapidly changing environment which is fraught with complexity and uncertainty. Factors
such as increasing diversity among culture, people and nations is impacting global organizations.
Hospitality industry is one of the world¹s largest employers and brings people together in a global
community. It is undergoing a significant change with cross–border expansions in high–growth
markets and the threat of digital or tech disruptors. This is redefining the roles, responsibilities and
capabilities of leaders in the industry and has created a demand for professionals with a strategic
mindset, agility, strong leadership skills, and financial sophistication. Moreover, characteristics of
the industry such as dynamic travel trends, labour intensive workforce from different cultures, long
operating hours, intense competition and fast pace of developments requires a leader to have broad
understanding of property–development skills as well as operating skill–sets. Leaders should have a
clear understanding of the company's brands and its strategies as they enter new markets.
The hospitality industry is seeing consolidation, growth of tech start–ups, growing connection
between countries, greater competition, changing guest behaviours, dynamic travel trends and
economic instability. In a bid to understand effective leadership style and qualities that are key to

are needed to run the operation. With the hospitality field expanding overseas a bigger variety of

Studies show that forty–three percent of the world population is bilingual. Forty percent of the
population is monolingual. People not fluent in multiple languages can have a hard time

commonalities and differences are essential to effective working relationships; (Brownlee). Some
human resources for companies have even designed strategies to comply cultural competence. That
will be discussed later on in this paper. As the population and rise of different cultures grows, more
industries will need to be competent. Dealing with equal opportunity is a very serious part of the

My Personal Favorite Chain Of Hotels
I choose to focus on Marriott International Hotels. This has always been my personal favorite chain
of hotels to stay at. Marriott is a leading hospitality company with revenues of nearly $13 billion a
year, a fortune 500 company, and over 4,000 properties in 78 countries. They have a majority of
their properties in the United States and Europe, but also have properties in Africa, Asia, Australia,
Canada, Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Middle East, and South America. I will discuss this
company's strategic plan, policies and procedures, vision, and more.
First off, it all began with a root beer stand. John and Alice Marriott decided to open a root beer
stand in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1927. After this was such a success, they decided to
expand and open restaurants in 1953. Then, in 1957 they opened their first motel in Arlington, VA.
Eventually, their son Bill Marriott took over the family business and made the company one of the
world's leading hospitality companies. The Marriott offers a variety of services to their customers.
They have certain rewards programs to save you money, complimentary breakfast at some of the
hotels, great customer service. They also book events, like social events, wedding receptions,
meetings, etc.
The Marriott says they do not have a mission statement. They said they have a vision statement
instead, which is "to be the #1 hospitality company in the world." They value putting people first,

the backlog of almost 17,00 request. Also if the request is the same gender and birthday of a wanted

intimately connected to that of civilizations; facilities offering guests hospitality have been in
evidence since early biblical times" (Levy–Bonvin, 2003, para.1). While the most ancient hotels did
not have all the modern amenities that consumers have become accustomed to receiving when
frequenting the various hotel brands and companies, the ancient hotels helped create the industry
that is still growing and evolving today.
At the start of the hotel industry, there was not of actual facilities that would resemble the hotels that
consumer is accustomed to seeing nowadays. Many of the accommodations offered to travelers
where bare bones, and the providers of the lodging were mostly concerned with providing a safe
place for the travelers to rest in between major outposts for a civilization that didn't have the modern
transportation methods. The modern ease of traveling was not afforded to the customers of that time,
which meant that the act of traveling from one city to another was very hazardous. Travelling during
that time was progressively more hazardous, which helped to spur the gradual appearance of inns
across much of Europe (Levy–Bonvin, 2003, para.5). Thus, the start of the industry revolved around
offering a safe resting spot for the newfound travelers

Customer Service Services At The Service Provider Essay
According to Lucas (2009), great customer service is presented by knowledgeable, capable, and
enthusiastic employees who deliver products and services to their customers and create consumer
loyalty. From that point, it could be claimed that the best employees will build the best service
which surpass customer expectation and the result of that action is when customer repurchase or talk
to another potential customers. In short, customer service is the action when service provider gives
customer what they desire. In addition, Gronroos (1983) proposed that service value is also affected
by the service provider. In this case, the term 'service provider' can be defined as the company
workers. Moreover, employees achieve the consumer satisfaction not only by the price but also by
providing the excellent service. Different expectation comes from different customer and the
satisfied result depends on the experience or purpose of each customer. By defining the different
between customer gender, customer age or level of customer social status, service provider can
create perfect strategies to finish company profit goal which comes from customer loyalty budget.
The important goal in achieving consumer loyalty is developing consumer satisfaction. By
concentrate in customer service, company provides the best care, the great customer appreciation
and the special atmosphere which comfort customer or create memorable experience and the result
is that they want to reuse the service.

Whenever you are planning to take a vacation, need to take a pit stop on the way to your next
destination, or attending a special event because your boss required you to, you will be sure to
encounter those of us who have chosen the hospitality field as a career. Within this industry, there
are so many options to choose from including the culinary arts, hotel management and
housekeeping, event planning, and travel agent and the main goal of those who work within these
fields is to ensure you feel comfortable while you are traveling or staying close to home. Although
hospitality is a broad major, they all require the same basic skills. The branches I want to explore are
hotel management and tourism. I have a brief background in the field of hospitality, both as a
student of Culinary Arts for two years in high school and as an officer of my high school's chapter of

hospitality industry my career. After a year and a half at Michigan State University, I realized that a
big university environment really wasn't for me and I decided to come back home to Washington,

Negligence Cases And Its Effects On The Judicial System
Negligence cases and their analyses have dominated our judicial system from its very inception.
This can be attributed to the human need to find fault and administer blame for wrong–doings and
the mere fact that committing negligence is so simple one may not even realize that it is being
committed until one is served with court documents. For example, pretend your home has a very
steep step leading to the front door. You are aware of this – after all, you live there – but you want to
ensure the safety of all visitors to your home. Suppose each day you place a sign by the driveway
that states, "Caution! Beware of steep step;" however, one day you decide to take a vacation and

Could the incident have been reasonably foreseen and could the presence of an employee have
helped mitigate damages?
On June 20, 1943, Anna C was chartered from its owner, Conners Marine Company, to the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company at a stated hire per diem. On January 4, 1944, around 2:15 PM, a
negligent accident occurred which resulted in the sinking of the Anna C and all of her cargo being
destroyed. The cargo aboard the Anna C – flour – was the property of the United States. At the time
of year the accident occurred, daylight hours were shorter than normal and the weather conditions
were not favorable (UNITED STATES et al. v. CARROLL TOWING CO., Inc., et al., 1947).
The negligence of the accident comes from a few different sources. Since the harbor conditions were
uneasy and busy, the owner of the barge should have had a captain on board – at the very least –
during daylight hours. The night before, the bargee left the Anna C at 5 PM and was still not present
at the time of the sinking at 2:15 PM the following day. During this 21–hour gap, no bargee was on
board when he should have been. Another negligent act was that the captain of the tug Carroll
instructed the deckhand and harbormaster to inspect the lines on the tiers holding the barges to the
Public Pier and Pier 52, including the Anna C. Since the harbormaster was employed by Grace Line,
some fault lies with that company as well. Grace Line's failure to add

These theories allow managers or relevant users to identify and rectify the problems that might have arisen due to a cultural clash. 3.0 Cultural awareness for tourism and hospitality The tourism and hospitality industry is expected to have a rise of 4.2% in GDP per year which is estimated to reach US$9.2 trillion by 2021. On top of that, statistics shows that "10% of the worker on the planet will be employed in Travel & Tourism and related sectors" (WTTC 2011 cited in LesRoches 2011). The world is ever–changing and globalization is taking place. Globalization is a worldwide integration and development of nations whereby all nations share a certain element in common. • 2. What Is The Corgers Of Marriott International And Starwood... Hotel owners and Franchises: Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts both have different unique selling points enabling them to become large hotel companies. With the merger, both companies will combine their unique qualities to encourage efficiency as well as new hotel developments. These improvements may be able to increase profitability enabling owners to have increase in their revenue (Bethesda, 2016). Due to the large increase in customer base and owning multiple properties all over the world, competition certainly has reduced as a result. Thus, this may lead to monopolization of certain hotel markets increasing profits for existing hotel owners and franchises (Butler, 2016). In addition, as both companies already have their own wide company portfolio and brands, in the long term Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resort can take advantage of the opportunity to explore variety of brands within the expansion of their brand families. The exponential increase in their market power and data access may lead to increase in their economies of scale, further increasing their profitability. In addition, the increase market power means the companies will have stronger bargaining power against OTAs, resulting in lower booking fees. Therefore, the reduction in their cost and increasing their appearance on the OTAs being more exposed to potential customers which may further increase their profitability as well as marketing power (Butler, 2016). • 34. Negligence Cases And Its Effects On The Judicial System Negligence cases and their analyses have dominated our judicial system from its very inception. This can be attributed to the human need to find fault and administer blame for wrong–doings and the mere fact that committing negligence is so simple one may not even realize that it is being committed until one is served with court documents. For example, pretend your home has a very steep step leading to the front door. You are aware of this – after all, you live there – but you want to ensure the safety of all visitors to your home. Suppose each day you place a sign by the driveway that states, "Caution! Beware of steep step;" however, one day you decide to take a vacation and decide that is unnecessary to put the sign out for the duration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Could the incident have been reasonably foreseen and could the presence of an employee have helped mitigate damages? On June 20, 1943, Anna C was chartered from its owner, Conners Marine Company, to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at a stated hire per diem. On January 4, 1944, around 2:15 PM, a negligent accident occurred which resulted in the sinking of the Anna C and all of her cargo being destroyed. The cargo aboard the Anna C – flour – was the property of the United States. At the time of year the accident occurred, daylight hours were shorter than normal and the weather conditions were not favorable (UNITED STATES et al. v. CARROLL TOWING CO., Inc., et al., 1947). The negligence of the accident comes from a few different sources. Since the harbor conditions were uneasy and busy, the owner of the barge should have had a captain on board – at the very least – during daylight hours. The night before, the bargee left the Anna C at 5 PM and was still not present at the time of the sinking at 2:15 PM the following day. During this 21–hour gap, no bargee was on board when he should have been. Another negligent act was that the captain of the tug Carroll instructed the deckhand and harbormaster to inspect the lines on the tiers holding the barges to the Public Pier and Pier 52, including the Anna C. Since the harbormaster was employed by Grace Line, some fault lies with that company as well. Grace Line's failure to add ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
