Role of Human Capital in Economic Development
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
a) BACKGROUND
Kenya is one of the less Developed countries that are endowed with relatively good levels of
resources and labor. However, there are still a lot to be done to tap those resources into viable
productivity and industrialization levels. One way of achieving this is by maximizing the use of both
physical and human capital. In or case we shall consider human capital. Human capital, according to
Adam Smith refers to the acquired and useful abilities of all the inhabitants or members of the
society. The acquisition of such talents by the maintenance of the acquirer, during his education,
study or apprenticeship, always costs a real expense, which is a capital fixed and realized, as it were

This paper therefore seeks to determine if, indeed, human capital has been the factor that has caused
a rise in economic growth and development in east Africa. c) RESEARCH QUESTIONS
 What is the role of human capital in economic development in east African countries?
 Is healthy human capital and other non economic inputs are part of the determinants of economic
growth in east African countries?
d) OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
 To find out the role of human capital in economic development in east African countries.
 To determine whether healthy human capital and other non economic inputs are part of the
determinants of economic growth in east African countries.
e) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is seeking to establish the relationship between human capital and economic growth and
development in east Africa. By so doing, we will be able to know with certainty whether human
capital is actually one of the reasons for economic growth in east Africa, in which case the findings
will be used to establish the right proportion of human capital needed to mix with other economic
inputs so as to facilitate sustainable economic development in the region. It also gives an indication
of the possible way to rate human capital against other

GFC and the Debt Crisis
After the global financial crisis in 2008, and the debt crisis in late 2009, which are the start of the
nightmare of the global economy, in early 2012, the global economy are expected to enter into
recovery phase, the International Monetary Fund made an announcement that the world economy
has an expected global economic growth rate at 3.5%, however, the two cuts of the forecast in April
and October (now to 3.3%) shows that the prospect of the global economy situation is not really
very good, actually 2012 is the slowest year of the growth since 2009.
But, the thing is that according to World Bank's announcement, the expected growth rate has been
divided into two parts, developing countries with a growth rate of 5.3% and advanced countries with
a growth rate of 1.4% .( World Bank database,2012)
The rapidly growth of Asian–Pacific region
After a significant transformation during the 2000s, the Asian–Pacific region countries became a

The Impact of China's One-Child Policy on Its Economic...
: What is the impact of China's one–child policy on its economic growth over the years? This paper
will show that the standard econometric estimation conceals the takeoff effect and thus
underestimates the economic impact of demographic changes. In effect, the impact of China's one–
child policy moved the timing of the economic take off by a decade. The original intent of the one–
child policy was for economical purposes. The authorities envisioned reducing the demand of
natural resources, reducing the rate of exploitation, and reducing unemployment caused by surplus
labor, and maintaining a steady labor rate. 100 words

1. Introduction
At the start of China's economic reforms in late 1970s, the Chinese leadership established
population control as one of its main priorities. The post–Mao leadership believed that China
population control was the key to ensure growth in per capita income. This led to the elevation of
the one–child policy. The one–child policy of China was the official family planning policy that was
aimed at controlling the population of China. The one–child was introduced in 1979 mainly to help
in alleviating economic, social and environmental problems in China. It was estimated by
demographers that the policy helped avert about 200 million births between 1979 and 2009 although
some other estimates puts it at 400 million. About two and half decades after the

Festivals and events: a research guide, p 7) More opportunity of jobs will cause seasonal, part–time
and unskilled difficulties of employment. People could not accept the higher price of goods and
service caused by the developing of events industry. If a region spend too much time and
expenditure on developing events industry, it will create a unbalanced development, it will displace
some traditional business and make some other basic industries' growth rate declined, the growth
rate of events industry will decrease because it could not develop without enough supports from
other basic and traditional industries. Social impacts A big event can always bring a lot of benefits to
the society of the host city, holding an event means there will be more opportunities of jobs for the
citizens in the city and it will increase employment. The events industry will induce a development

Mapinfo Case Analysis
CE1.13 I used the Raster image option in Mapinfo for generating detailed topographical features
and calculating the geographical distances and areas. I developed a two stage process for the
creation of raster image. First, I initialized the vector coordinate values of the new location site
obtained from the GPS receiver from the database Mapinfo software. Second step was the
integration of the scanned aerial photographs obtained from Google Earth and paper map of the site
location provided by the surveying agency, Survey of India. I added the coordinate values manually
in the MapInfo table tool box, as there were some areas where GPS signal was unavailable.

obtained from Mapinfo was used as the basis for the identifying the ideal location for the cell site.
CE1.18 I conducted a wireless survey by using a wireless adapter for detecting the existing active
access points and measuring the signal strength in new location site. Since pre–deployment survey
was initial process for coverage site survey, I decided temporary access point as the reference point

survey to detect the RF activity in the limited location and was used to calculate the signal as well as
the noise intensity in the region. I measured the attenuation factor and signal attenuation with
respect to distance. For the accuracy of these factors, I used unlicensed 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and I
noted the variations in the power as I moved along from the reference point; I noted and referred this
variation was due to the channel interference

Urbanization and Its Effects
Introduction Chapter No. 1
Urbanization brings about a social change. This is most prominent in the expansion of
entrepreneurship and industrialization. It is known that the progress of the landless laborer and the
absorption of wealth into a few hands promote urbanization. A lot of people say that urbanization is
the predictable outcome of economic growth, with the increase of expert craftsmen, merchants, and
proprietors. Urban growth or urbanization brings an attraction for the people residing in rural areas.
They get attracted by the luxuries, comforts and opportunities which people of cities are enjoying.
Both the natural increase (population growth) and net migration are the major contributory factors to

Human Overpopulation
Overpopulation of Humans The impact of human activity on the environment is catastrophically
devastating and destructible. Assisting to that destruction is the increasing number of people that
make up the worlds population today. Overpopulation is the condition of giving birth to a number of
people living on earth that over exceeds the amount of space, resources and land found on our
planet. According to reports from the United Nations (2007), "World population is currently
growing by approximately 75 million people per year." Such growth should be considered alarming
and a possible threat to people as well as our environment. Humans all over the world must
understand that these changes in population growth will foreshadow many changes ... Show more

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the transportation
sector is the second largest source of CO2 emissions in the U.S. Automobiles and light–duty trucks
account for almost two–thirds of emissions from the transportation sector and emissions have
steadily grown since 1990. Other sources of transportation emissions are freight trucks, aircraft,
trains and boats. Emissions from transportation depend on the number of trips or miles traveled by
each type of vehicle each year, which are in turn influenced by larger economic trends and consumer
behavior. Over the long term, changes in the fuel efficiency of vehicles (e.g., mileage), and in the
type of fuel used can also influence the level of emissions. (2007)
Controlling and managing this type of pollution requires far more than what people can ever
imagine. A number of approaches attempting to take air pollution serious have already been
implemented by government and other environmental agencies. Education and encouragement from
the human population as a whole can make a difference.

There are different levels of income and consumption in the different areas of China. Dissimilarities
in education, consumption, power, personal habits and tastes lead many multinational companies to
view China as one nation, but certainly not one national market. While overseas companies focus on
the premium market, China's domestic consumer goods companies compete in principal for middle
and low income consumers. Also, the new labor law introduced in January 2008 has improved labor
protection and wage regulations, but most importantly it has raised China's factory labor cost
substantially causing foreign investors in labor intensive, low margin industries to reconsider their
Chinese establishments. China made products are also put under scrutiny with respect to quality,
hygiene and safety problems. In a global environment, which is driven by trade friction and
financial insecurity, these problems may make it even more politically difficult for China to net

Problems of the Food System Essay
We live in an age in which we have come to expect everything to be instantaneously at our
fingertips. We live in an age of instant coffee, instant tea, and even instant mashed potatoes. We can
walk down the street at 5 in the morning and get a gallon of milk or even a weeks worth of groceries
at our discretion. Even though it is great that food is now readily available at all times, this
convenience comes at a price, for both the producer and the consumer. Farmers are cheated out of
money and are slaves to big business, workers and animals are mistreated. And, because food now
comes at a low cost, it has become cheaper quality and therefore potentially dangerous to the
consumer's health. These problems surrounding the ethics and the ... Show more content on

Additionally, big business controls the farmers by capitalizing on widely used commodities. For
example, the company Monsanto which is based in St. Louis, Missouri protects its dominance over
the genetically modified crops such as the soy bean with the use of a patent law. Because of this,
Monsanto's patented genes "account for 95 percent of all soy beans and 80 percent of all corn grown
in the U.S.," (Associated Press). Although genetically modifying the soy bean crop has made it more
readily available and more sustainable, this comes at a high price to farmers. Monsanto continues to
raise their prices, which forces farmers to accrue even more debt, and there is no sign of the rise in
the seed prices stopping. Since a lot of the farmers are under contract with Monsanto, there is
nothing they can do about this unethical policy in fear of losing their job. If you think being a farmer
is bad, try working in a slaughter house. "Knocker, Sticker, Shackler, Rumper, First Legger, Knuckle
Dropper," these are just a few of the positions the workers at a slaughterhouse get assigned to.
Simply reading the names of the above job positions induces a sense of nausea and hints at the
inherent brutality that these positions demand (Schlosser, 172). Because the weight and size of cows
are unpredictable, most of the labor in the slaughterhouse must be done by hand. On the kill floor of

A Critique of "Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping...
Since 1991, the southern half of Somalia, a poverty stricken African nation, has seen various tribal
militias battle for dominance and power over individual regions of the country. Violence has plagued
Mogadishu, the capital, since warlords ousted the former president. Mere months after the collapse
of the government, men, women and children in torn clothes ran helplessly towards packages
dropped from military planes towards the hot sand of their tiny village. This action was one of many
attempts to help underdeveloped nations receive food by the United Nations' World Food
Programme. Within his article titled "Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor", Garret

In knowing this, Hardin however, chooses to eliminate the statistic entirely.
Within this scenario Hardin appeals to the readers with the presentation of a circumstance in which
only two outcomes seem probable. Either the passengers help ten more individuals and drown, or
they neglect to help any, and float securely away with the "safety factor" still intact. Hardin
disregards the idea of helping some people, even if selected in a fairly arbitrary way: "Suppose we
decide to preserve our small safety factor and admit no more to the lifeboat. Our survival is then
possible although we will have to be constantly on guard against boarding parties" (2). He insinuates
that once the decision is made to help some, the lifeboat passengers must attempt to save all of those
drowning, which is clearly not feasible given the carrying capacity of the lifeboat. Although the
boat's capacity should not exceed the admission of more than ten people, why not admit three, four,
or even those ten? It seems rather unreasonable to deny help to every individual, when, although not
all can be rescued, the boat clearly holds the space for more. The same ideology may be applied in
other philosophical debates, including the death penalty, as we discussed in lecture. Ernest Van Den
Haag, a defender of the death penalty, explains in his article that the importance of punishment is
not whether every individuals gets what they deserve, but rather that some, rather than none, of

Performance Analysis Of Fso Communication System
Performance Analysis of FSO Communication System: Effects of Fog, Rain and Humidity
Abstract–Free Space Optics (FSO) is one of the most promising new access technologies. FSO
provides the transmission of data with unlimited bandwidth. The atmospheric attenuation is caused
by two main factors absorption and scattering. This paper investigates a performance study of free
space optics channel for variable wavelengths 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm at distance range of 1
km. The simulation reports minimum BER for NRZ–OOK modulation technique at different
receiver diameters in presence of fog, rain and humidity attenuation. The results shows how to
improve the system to achieve minimum BER and maximize the power received that can be detect
at distance 1 km.
Keywords–free space optics (FSO); fog; rain; humidity. Introduction
FSO communication, also termed as optical wireless, is an optical communication technology that
uses line of sight communication system and tries to achieve the need for high bandwidth over short
distances [1]. There are various atmospheric attenuation effects on FSO link such as fog, rain, snow,
humidity and temperature [2]. The majority of FSO systems are using 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm
[3–5] wavelengths. Research studies have shown that fog is the most important factor because the
size of fog particles is comparable to the transmission wavelength of optical and near infrared wave
[6].

Absorbance and Spectrophotometry
Experiment 2: Absorbance and Spectrophotometry
ABSTRACT:
This was an investigation into the effects of different wavelengths of light on methylene blue and
carmine red on the absorbance value on a spectrophotometer. A spectrophotometer is used to
measure light intensity by emitting a single light source through a cuvette of coloured solution. The
particles in the solution, which are coloured, absorb the light depending on how concentrated it is
and this produces an electronic reading from the photometer which is the absorbance value. The
maximum absorption was found for both solutions and was used to calculate the molar extinction
coefficient of methylene blue. An unknown concentration of methylene blue was calculated by using

Figure 4. Graph showing dilutions of methylene blue and the absorptions each solution gives
The black line on figure 4 represents the regression line. We can use this to find the concentration of
the unknown concentration of methylene blue solution by drawing a tangent to the regression line at
absorbance 0.262 (where the unknown absorbed) and reading down from that point on the graph to
the concentration. The concentration of the unknown methylene blue is 4.4 x 10–6 mol dm–3.
We can find the molar extinction coefficient by substituting values of absorbance and the
concentration of the unknown concentration of methylene blue into Beer's laws equation.
Absorbance = k c t
k = absorbance / c t
k = 0.262 / 4.4 x 10–6 x 1
k = 59545 mol dm–3 cm–3
Therefore, k, the molar extinction coefficient is 59545 mol dm–3 cm–3.
DISCUSSION:
The main objectives of this experiment was to find the unknown concentration of methylene blue by
using a spectrophotometer. I found the maximum absorption for methylene blue and carmine red
(please refer to figure 1) and using this I determined a more accurate maximum absorption value for
each solution by taking further readings around the peak of each line to determine the maximum.
However, the findings of maximum absorption for methylene blue and carmine red may not be as
accurate as we think

2. LITERATURE REVIEW
Estimates reported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD,1997)
suggest that several countries have experienced very rapid growth of the private sector during the
transition period. A number of studies have suggested that investment and growth in developing
economies is positively associated with indicators of 'openness' and export promotion
(Balasubramanyam et al., 1996). Such findings may suggest that investors prefer countries with
relatively liberal trade regimes and few constraints on profit repatriation, possibly within regions
with wider supra–national free trade arrangements. De Mello (2000) analyzed the time series and
panel data for 32 OECD and non–OECD countries for the period 1970–90. He estimated the impact
of FDI on capital accumulation and output growth in the recipient economy supporting the FDI led
growth hypothesis. Similarly, Soto (2000); Alfaro, Chanda, Kalelmi–Ozcan, Sayek (2004); Li and
Liu (2005) found positive impact of FDI on GDP growth. They all used FDI measure as percentage
of GDP. Liu et al. (2002) examined the long–run relationship between economic growth, FDI and
trade in China. A study on the quarterly data for imports,

A REVIEW OF THE ROLE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN STIMULATING ECONOMIC
GROWTH, REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT AND INCREASING LEVEL OF INCOME IN LOW

INTRODUCTION
This paper sets out to review the role of entrepreneurship in stimulating economic growth, reducing
unemployment and increasing levels of income in low to middle income countries. Nieman and
Nieuwenhuizen (2009) states that the contribution of entrepreneurs to the economy can be attributed
to their special qualities. They also further states that entrepreneurs have been responsible for
growth and development over the centuries and are identified as the key role players in the economy
of every country. The paper identifies the different definitions of an ... Show more content on

He further states that it always has to do with bringing about a different use of resources in that they
are withdrawn from their traditional employ and subjected to new combinations. Schumpeter relates
entrepreneurship to be influenced by entrepreneurs who are innovative and these people have to be
extra–ordinary as they have to come up with extra–ordinary events. They come up with new
technological possibilities hence are able to establish large businesses from these. Carland etal.
(1984) confirms that an entrepreneur is someone innovative and further says that he or she employs
strategic management practices in the business. Timmons (2000) believes entrepreneurship as the
process of creating and seizing an opportunity and pursuing it, regardless of resources currently
controlled. Nieman and Nieuwenhuizen (2009) define an entrepreneur as the person who sees an
opportunity in the market, gathers resources and creates and grows a business venture to meet these
needs. They also further states that he or she bears risk of the venture and is rewarded with profit if
it succeed. With different definitions of entrepreneurship defined by different authors through the
way they define an entrepreneur, the researcher generally defines entrepreneurship as the act of
being an entrepreneur who establishes business through the organisation of resources taking risk
with the aim of realising profit.

Essay about Can the World Sustain an Increasing Population?
Countries in the world hold different attitudes to the population policy, some of them tend to delay
the increase of population while others introduce policies to encourage childbirth. After centuries of
continual growth, which started at the first industrial revolution, the global population reached over
7 billion individuals in 2013. Research by Ezeh, Bongaarts and Mberu (2012) states that increasing
population is a threat to individuals and societies by bring problems based on unsatisfied demand.
The "increasing population" in this essay can be defined as net rising in birth rate during a period,
especially in the poor developing countries. This essay will argue that the world cannot sustain an
increasing population. The reasons for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the same degree of pollution increases in cities with population of 10 million people is
3.13 parts per billion (NASA, 2013). The contribution to air pollution from surface–level NO2 is
about a factor of five when population in cities increased from 1 million to 10 million people in
China. According to Engelman (2009), falling human numbers is a powerful key to long–term
environmental sustainability. Therefore it could be concluded that the world environment can hardly
maintain an increasing population for its limited resources and probably pollution.
Another reason for the world cannot continue to provide for increasing population is that rising rate
of birth especially in poorest developing countries aggravates the trend toward greater inequality,
which means the rich getting much richer while others are opposite. Ezeh, Bongaarts and Mberu
(2012) found that in general, the growth of population is rapider in poorer countries than developed
countries. For example, the World Bank points out that in sub–Saharan Africa where poverty
headcount ratio fluctuated of 50% from 1981 to 2010, the rate of population growth is more than 2%
per year. Poverty trend in here refers to people living on less than $1.25 a day. Malthus (as cited in

No.1 and No. 2 for the same operating conditions (at either superficial gas velocities 5 or 30 cm /s)
are close to each other along the diameter of the bubble column, indicating the high precision and
the reliability of CT measurements. For instance, the average absolute relative difference (AARD)
between two profiles for each superficial gas velocity was calculated by Eq. 2, and it was found to
be 2.17% and 3.47% for a superficial gas velocity of 5 and 30 cm, respectively.
AARD=1/N ∑_(i=1)^N▒|(ε_1 (r)–ε_2 (r))/(ε_1 (r))| (2)
where ε_1 (r) and ε_2 (r) represent gas holdup values of experiment No.1 and No.2, respectively at
the corresponding dimensionless radius positions while N represents the number of data points
along the diameter of the column.
Furthermore, the standard deviation (SD), which represents the devision of the measured values of
gas holdup from the mean 〈ε〉 of these values along the diametrical profiles, was also calculated by
Eq. 3.
SD=√(1/(N–1) ∑_(i=1)^N▒(ε_i–〈ε〉)^2 ) (3)
It was found that SD values were minimal, within

Medical Physics Personal Statement
At a time when it was popular practice for kids growing up in my country to aspire to become
doctors, lawyers and engineers, for no rational reasons owing to naiveté that comes with such tender
ages, I had known I wanted to save lives. I just didn't know in what capacity it would be. I can
safely say that I grew up faster than most children my age, I had known what it meant to lose a
father at six, I had seen an aunt die of what they said was cancer at ten. I had also known the
frustration of not being able to do anything to save both. And of course, I couldn't have. I am a
grown man now, equipped with the rationality that comes with education, and most importantly the
informed will to save the world. And I have found an important tool in Medical Physics.
Early in life, I developed an aversion for linearity of mind. As I grew to grasp the concepts of
Physics, Chemistry and Biology, I discovered what I call the harmony of science. I realized that
scientific problems were best solved via a holistic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Global Population Control and Environmental Policies Essay
Global population control and environmental policies are the subject of international controversy.
The rate at which human beings are populating the earth and polluting it are some of the most
important factors that face the global society today. As of March 2009, the world population is about
6.76 billion. With the high rate of population increase, the global population is expected to reach 9
billion by 2040. With the number of people in the world today and the amount of consumer goods
being purchased and used, these factors present a problem to the state of the environment in the near
future. Over the past 50 years, the world's population has more than doubled and more than 1 billion
of the world's people do not have enough food to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These figures strike a resemblance to how fast the earth is gaining population.
Many scientists believe that high–income nations present a much greater threat to the ecosystem
because there are more people in these countries consuming goods at a faster rate than low–income
countries. Ecosystems cannot support high rates of population growth combined with environmental
damage. The carrying capacity of the earth's ecosystems are being surpassed and the ecosystems of
many nations are being ruined at a very fast pace. The rate at which country's populations are
growing, it will not be very long before many of the carrying capacities are surpassed.
Environmental degradation involves taking natural resources from the environment and re–
introducing them to the environment in the form of pollution. One of the reasons for environmental
degradation is greediness. People are trying to maintain high levels of wealth and do not care at
what cost to the environment. The perfect example of this would be the current situation in Fort
McMurray, Alberta. The land is being stripped of its natural resources everyday and is left behind a
barren land. The rate at which the air is being polluted in Fort McMurray is triple that of anywhere
else in western Canada. People from all over North America have relocated to Fort McMurray
because of the demand of jobs there. Fort McMurray is

period 1, growing from 153,000 unit in demand to 405,000 units demand in period 8. Recent
demand has grown at a slower rate suggesting that this segment has reached its maturity stage. This
segment was not service well until recent periods when competition for this segment became quite
strong. Despite this competition and relatively low margins, this remains an attractive market due to
its size and position in the life cycle. * PROFESSIONALS – The professional segment has been the
most competitive segment in terms of products offered, primarily due to the large margins that can
be received. The segment grew substantially in the early periods but lately has entered the decline

ability to hold market share this, segment will quickly lose its appeal in future periods. * HI

Ashley's Ethical Dilemma
Ashley is a six and a half years old child with "static encephalopathy." Her parents request a
hysterectomy (to prevent menstruation), surgical removal of nascent buds (to prevent development),
and estrogen therapy (to speed up the natural closure of her growth plates). The ethical dilemma is
whether these procedures should be done on Ashley based on the parents' request. There are no legal
or professional standards for this. By adhering to the parents' request, the physician would be
eliminating menstrual pain. The estrogen therapy would stop Ashley from growing taller. This
would make Ashley more portable and will make it easier for the parents to take care of her. Also,
because she can be moved more easily, she will be less likely to

The Effect of Education on Economic Growth
The Effect of Education on Economic Growth
Abstract
Education is one of the primary factors of development. Countries can't achieve economic
development without investment in human capital. Vocational training and higher education equip a
worker to perform certain jobs or functions .It improves the quality of their lives and leads to social
benefits to individuals and society like improving income distribution. Education increase people's
productivity and creativity and promotes entrepreneurship and technological advances.
Technological progress reflects the growth of human knowledge.

This function is not accurate because it doesn't take into account the quality or type of education an
individual has. Human capital is also an important variable in the variation wage function which is
hard to measure too. Human capital includes some feature such as education, work experience, and
health. To estimate human capital, scholars Suggested quantitative measures of quality include
"costs per student, library expenditures, number of earned doctorates among Faculty and
administrators, and student–faculty ratios." However, this estimation of human capital is not
accurate too. Some scholars argue pupil –teacher ratio is alternative measure of resources invested in
education which measure the quantity of education but not the quality. Further more, some research
didn't use the system approach (input, throughputs, and output.) which made some scholar to believe
it underestimate the effect of education spending by failing to observe the possible indirect effect on
economic growth. All these inaccurate measures and disagreements make it difficult to compare the
findings of empirical studies to determine how strong the effect of investment in human capital to
promote growth rates of the economy, but macroeconomists in many research stressed the
importance of education to promote growth.

empirical evidence on this issue has been mixed. Despite various efforts of the successive Nigerian

In order to ensure the economy delivers on its potentials, the country experimented with two
development philosophies–a private sector–led growth in which the private sector served as the
"engine house" of the economy and a public sector – driven growth in which the government
assumed the "commanding heights" of the economy. The initial low level of private sector
development, however, led to public sector dominance of the economy, encouraged by growth in the
oil sector (UNDP, 2009). It is noteworthy that since the advent of civilian rule in 1999, growth
performance has improved significantly. The last seven years witnessed an average growth rate of
about 6 percent (UNDP, 2009:5; CBN, 2008). However, economic growth has not resulted in
appreciable decline in unemployment and poverty prevalence. Human development has remained
unimpressive as shown by the indicators in Table 1. Over the years, successive Nigerian
governments recognized the importance of human capital formation in the development process and
have embarked on various programmes and projects which led to the establishment of educational
institutions and health centres throughout the country. However, in the late 1970s and early 1980s,
federal government spending grew substantially resulting in fiscal crisis, inflation, and heavy
borrowings. Subsequently, through the austerity measures adopted

Population: A Vital Indicator of Economic Growth Essay
Economic growth in a city, state, or country is characterized by steady growth in the productive
capacity of the economy or a growth of national income (Fernandez– Villaverde, 2001). The Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate is most commonly used to measure economic growth because
it is a reflection of the total change in a country's national output (Filardo, 1999). This growth rate is
used to predict the direction of an economy. A positive growth rate indicates a positive economy
with more jobs, consumption and income while a negative growth indicates an economic decline
(Filardo, 1999). Economic growth constitutes superior productivity, prosperity, and increased capital
per capita resulting in a higher quality of living. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Land use is highly dependent upon the social interactions and demographics of the surrounding
population. For a city to be considered "sustainable", it must be an environment suitable for efficient
public transport and social interaction within the surrounding population (Jenks, 1996). The demand
for different types of land use is based on population and economic developments shape, whereas
the allocation of land use change is determined by regional and local conditions.
One important approach to micro–level perspective modeling is multi–agent simulation. Multi–
agent models are part of distributed artificial intelligence methods (Verburg et al., 2004). An agent is
an entity that is able to act on itself within a given environment and communicate with other agents
and whose knowledge and behaviors are a result of its observations (Sanders, Pumain, Mathian,
Guerin–Pace, & Bura, 1997). Multi–agent models can clarify the degree to which system–level
properties emerge from local evolutionary forces and the impact those local processes have on the
continued functioning of the multi–agent universe (Levin, 1998). While the simulated behavior at
the aggregate levels aids in the development of new theories connecting individual behavior to
collective behavior, the model is not very useful outside of the micro–level. The model is limited to
applications that are

By the end of August, the crisis spread to the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, which after
floating their currencies, experienced sharp depreciations ensuing an economic collapse. Despite the
International Monetary Fund's (IMF) attempts to restore confidence with currency standby
agreements, the crisis spread to Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. These countries all managed to
escape a financial meltdown, but not without significant currency depreciation. When the crisis
forced South Korea, the eleventh largest economy in the world, to devalue the won, the IMF
responded by creating substantial rescue programs for Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea.
However, the programs were unable to prevent the crisis from deepening. In a matter of months the
Asian tigers were reduced to "whimpering kittens."
Early responses to the crisis, fueled by Washington and even the IMF, were that the "dark underside
to 'Asian values'" or Asian capitalism, which promoted a paternalistic authoritarian or single party
rule to guide the economy, had failed and was being reprimanded by the free market. However, both
authoritarian and democratic governments fell to the rapid contagion due to institutional weaknesses

Growth Attenuation Therapy Ethical Issues
In 2006, Growth–Attenuation Therapy, the administering of high doses of estrogen to severely
disabled children in order to stunt their growth, was introduced. It is of ethical concern because
neither the medical community nor the parents, know all of the implications and ramifications and
yet, this treatment continues to be in practice. The issue resurfaced last summer when a study by the
Pediatric Endocrine Society resulted in an article published March 22nd 2016 in the New York
Times, which indicated that a noteworthy population was receiving this treatment. The ethical issue
lies in the doctors and parents not necessarily being "informed voters". For example, one of the

without prejudice" (Johnson 2012 p. 265) Under specific circumstances, families may have the right
to use medical advances to improve their overall quality of life however, this slippery slope must be
controlled by the leaders in the medical community. Doctors and committee members need to be
aware of both sides of each issue and combine the priorities they have as medical professionals, with
the related socio political priorities. Additionally, doctors should have experience administering and
monitoring such treatment prior to accepting patients for Growth–Attenuation Treatment. FDA
regulations and guidelines, for use of estrogen, would need to be established and an oversight
committee would be formed to ensure the process remains ethically sound. "In order to act as an

becoming actively engaged in organizational affairs." (Johnson, 2012 p. 293) Furthermore, the
medical professionals would need to publicly declare that caution should be exercised regarding the
treatment's use, due to a lack of existing data. This would alert the public to the importance of their

Effects of Human Capital on Maize Production in Ghana Essay
Agriculture constitutes about one–third of GDP and provides employment for about two–thirds of
the labor force in Sub–Saharan Africa. Productivity growth in agriculture is therefore an important
element for economic growth and development. Yet, growth in this sector has been slow. According
to the World Bank (1989), agricultural growth for the continent from 1980 to 1989 averaged only
1.8% per year. Therefore, "improving this growth rate is of increasing concern for both governments
and international organizations" (Pinckney 1995). Investing in the human capital base is regarded as
one of the most effective ways to improve agricultural productivity (Nelson and Phelps, 1966;

Rivera (1998) argues that education, irrespective of the form, improves productivity to a very
significant extent.
1.2 Problem Statement
Agriculture is a very important sector in the Ghanaian economy. Although its contribution to GDP
decreased from 43.5% in 1990 to 21.5% in 2013, it still remains a significant player in the economy
of the country (Ghana Statistical Service 2008; ISSER 2011; CIA 2013). The agricultural sector
employs about 60% of the workforce in Ghana and can therefore be regarded as the backbone of the
Ghanaian economy (ISSER, 2011).
Maize is the most important cereal crop produced in Ghana and it is also the most widely consumed
staple food in Ghana (Morris et al., 1999). Maize accounts for 55% of grain output in the country.
Maize is also an important component of poultry feed and to a lesser extent the livestock feed sector,
as well as a substitute for the brewing industry.
Although maize productivity has been increasing over the years, studies show that Ghanaian farmers
are yet to produce enough to meet the nation's demand. The most recent domestic production data
shows that the shortfall between domestic production and consumption would reach 267,000 Mt by
2015 if there were no productivity improvements (MOFA, 2011), prolonging the continual

The reliability of seismic data may influenced by different factors in the acquisition process. For
ensuring and better understanding of the reservoir characteristics, these factors should be avoided

(SNR) sometimes completely masked by noise. To prepare these seismic data for further application,
processing, maximize the potential benefit, and contribution of the seismic data in exploration and

spend the other resource that comes from trees "money". Studies show that 70% of the products that
we use a day are made of some kind of wood. If we were to look around our homes and count all the
items that are made of wood we would probably find that 60 percent are made of wood. Without
wood humans and other species would never be able to survive.
Another pro argument of deforestation is the issue of fuel wood in rural areas. The use of fuel wood
in the growing cities contrasts strictly with the more familiar patterns of rural areas. The growth of
energy used in rural household still dominates the energy budgets of many developing countries,
especially in the poorer countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Nigeria. Most fuel wood
is used in the household. The concept of an energy transition, however, is central to any
understanding energy in urban areas. As

The Ashley Treatment: Practical, but Ethical? Essay
The Ashley Treatment: Practical, But Ethical?
– Hitler times – medical experiments
– Kennedy sister – lobotomy
– Potential grave consequences that can result from irresponsible, or criminal, medical experiments.
While we must be vigilant to protect innocent victims from such experimentation we cannot let that
stifle our duty to continue making advances in healthcare and improving the lives of patients.
– Moral obligations should typically not be so demanding that enormous sacrificies must be made in
order to fulfill them (Liao, Savulescu, & Sheehan, 2007).
– Beauchamp and Childress – ethical principles of autonomy
– One must ask if a treatment is practical does that make it ethical?

Research has shown that females with disabilities are twice likely to suffer sexual abuse as females
without disabilities (Clark & Vasta, 2007)
Reasoning
(1) Less likely to develop skin breakdown, infections and pneumonia.
Limiting Ashley's adult height would reduce, or possibly stop the progression of her scoliosis and
help prevent bone fractures that may occur as she became harder to lift and transfer. ("The Ashley
Treatment," 2007).
(2) Keep her care more manageable, so they could continue to care for her in their home with
limited outside help.
Ashley's physicians, Dr. Daniel Gunther and Dr. Douglas Diekema, and the Seattle Children's
Hospital Board of Ethics approved the series of treatments after much debate and research and
concluded it would be in her best interest.
July of 2004, Ashley underwent hysterectomy and breast bud removal. After recovering, she was
started on a high dose estrogen therapy which was completed in December 2006.
The Debate
Contrasts those who argue that it violates the child's human rights and is for the sake of convenience
for the parents, versus those who argue that this treatment is in the best interest of the child because
it will provide better quality of life (Clark & Vista, 2007).
The fundamental question asks if Ashley loses her human rights because she is unaware of them.

Optical Fiber Sensors Essay
Optical fiber sensors are very important devices to detect and monitor ionizing radiation in nuclear
based technologies such as industrial radiography, nuclear medicine, spacecraft and satellite
instrumentation, and also in nuclear power facilities. Reliability of other conventional radiation
detectors in space and terrestrial application is much affected by electromagnetic interference and
exposure to fire and explosion potential hazards. However the functionality of optical fiber at
extremely high dose radiation still a challenge where radiation induced attenuation can be increased
for permanent damage of the sensor. There is a need to develop a new sensing material with small
dimension and low mass such as single mode silica optical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

2013). There is a need to replace 3H–based sensor to detect neutron in context of nuclear
nonproliferation(Runkle 2011) and silica optical fiber with better resistant to radiation damage (Xue
et al. 2012) is the other very close a safe cheaper possible neutron sensor to be considered. In
addition, its other characteristic of having low attenuation losses provides a wide bandwidth for
long–distance wireless communication so that the exposure of radiation to workers can be avoided
during radiation detection and monitoring operation.
Ionizing radiation such as x–ray, gamma, alpha, beta and neutron radiations, are not only harmful to
human health(Azzam et al. 2012) and environment(Mothersill&Seymour 2014), but also can
damage the electronic devices(Wang et al. 2014). The source of these ionizing radiations are from
radioactive materials, x–ray tubes, particle accelerators such as ion beams, nuclear weapons and
reactors, cosmic rays from space and from natural rocks and minerals. Exposure of extremely high
energy electromagnetic radiation such as x–ray can lead to failure in silicon sensors(Klanner et al.
2013). The increasing radiation induced attenuation can lead to permanent damage of optical
fiber(Kovačević et al. 2013). So there is a need to develop better sensors with good radiation
resistance such as Ge doped optical fiber sensors in radiant environment.
SiO2 and plastic type optical fiber are two types of material used in any research and development

Economic Comparison of India and China Essay examples
Economic Comparison of India and China
From April to June 2005, India's GDP grew at 8.1 per cent, compared with 7.6 per cent in the same
period the year before. More impressively, India is achieving this result with just half of China's
level of domestic investment in new factories and equipment, and only 10 per cent of China's
foreign direct investment...
... in 2003 and 2004, [China] was investing close to 50 per cent of its GDP in domestic plant and
equipment – roughly equivalent to India's entire GDP. That is higher than any other country...
China's growth stems from massive accumulation of resources, while India's growth comes from
increasing efficiency...

In the long run, that's not going to work without more open competition, creativity and
entrepreneurship. India's hidden strength is that the country is already extremely entrepreneurial –
but in the informal sector. An Indian friend mentions that most of the cars we see on the roads, and
many computers in the offices, are assembled in small, informal factories, outside the law, to avoid
the many regulations and taxes that still curbs the Indian economy. Imagine what the Indians could
do if all that energy was legalized.
It is quicker to start a new business in China than in India. If India's labor laws are better than
China's, it's only because we're doing thing in socialism lite.
The Doing Business database ranks China a modest 91st on the overall ease of doing business, with
India worse but not dramatically so at 116th... in China it's quicker to start a business, get goods
from factory floor on board a container ship, and register property. But Indians – perhaps
surprisingly – seem to have more flexible labour laws and fewer hassles with licences.
In India, about 670 industries are completely reserved for very small companies, which means that
the economy lose the benefits of scale, don't get foreign investments and are unable to compete
globally. In 2001, the average Indian clothing company had only 50 machines, compared to 500 in
the typical Chinese plant. The same problem

The Ashley Treatment
The Ashley Treatment has been, and still remains, controversial. A statement written by Ashley's
mom and dad stated that "Ashley had a normal birth, but her mental and motor faculties did not
develop. Over the years, neurologists, geneticists, and other specialists conducted every known
traditional and experimental test, but still could not determine a diagnosis or a cause. Doctor's call
her condition 'static encephalopathy of unknown etiology', which means an insult to the brain of
unknown origin or cause, and one that will not improve."
The "The Ashley Treatment" is now a generic phrase coined in the health profession that refers to
growth–stunting procedures for children with severe disabilities. This name was given in reference
to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not clear whether or not the court would have stopped Ashley's parents from modifying her
body in the way they did. It seems likely that, at a minimum, the mastectomy would have been
delayed until it was clear that Ashley had in fact developed large uncomfortable breasts, something
that was merely speculative at the time of her surgery. It is certain, however, that imposition of
limitations and process in her case would have gone a long way toward reducing the risk that the
procedures caused Ashley more harm than any benefits they achieved. Obviously, time cannot be
turned back for Ashley, but future cases can and should be regulated more carefully (Ouellette,
2009). It has been more than five years since the Ashley Treatment but the topic is still very much
alive for a few reasons. One being, that the treatment is still being given (at least 12 given so far in
the U.S.), secondly because of the legal issues raised and thirdly due to the moral issues it raises. In
my opinion, the moral issues it raises are enough to oppose the treatment in itself.
The justification behind the parents giving their daughter The Ashley Treatment were to improve her
the quality of life by keeping Ashley from suffering from menstrual pain, and enabling her to
become more mobile due to her lack of weight and height. This argument also states that the lives of
the parents will be made easier in caring for their terminally disabled

Essay on Prader-Willi Syndrome
Prader–Willi Syndrom
Prader–Willi Syndrome is a serious genetic disorder that begins at birth with no known cure ;
causing mental retardation,short stature,low muscle tone,incomplete sexual development,and its
main charecteristic, the desire to eat everything and anything in sight.
Prader–Willi syndrome was first known as Prader–Labhart–Willi Syndrome after three Swiss
doctors who first described the disorder in 1956. The doctors described a small group of kids with
obesity, short stature and mental deficiency , neonatal hypotonia (floppiness) and a desire to
constantly eat because they are always hungry. Many other features of PWS have since been
described, but extreme obesity and the health problems associated with being fat are the ... Show

The average IQ testing shows that people with PWS are mildly retarded, the range is from severely
retarded to not retarded, with 40% having borderline retardation or just a low normal intelligence.
Most affected children, besides their IQ scores, will have many, severe learning disabilities, and will
show poor academic performance no matter what their IQ shows to their mental abilities.
There are many signs and symptoms of PWS that show up before birth.some are decreased fetal
movement in 80–90% and having an abnormal delivery in 20–30% due to having a really floppy
baby. There are two distinct clinical stages of
PWS.
Stage 1
Babys with PWS are called "floppy babies" a lot. Thats because they have weak
muscles, officially it is known as hypotonia. This hypotonia, which almost always occurs, could be
mild to severe. Neonatal hypotonia makes sucking difficult, and a special feeding method called a
gavage is used.A gavage the placing of a tube into the stomach through the mouth. They use it during
the first days of life a lot.. Decreased caloric intake from the special feeding difficulties may lead to
failure to gain weight. To keep the baby's weight under control supervision by a professional

Overpopulation a Problem?
Is Overpopulation a Serious Problem?
This question seems to be question that is asked quite frequently lately. In the last two centuries,
population has skyrocketed. In 1800 the world population was only at 1 billion, and today it's
estimated that the world population exceeds six billion people. With overpopulation, many problems
have arisen. Some believe that overpopulation is the reason for world hunger, global population will
reach crisis proportions by 2050, and some believe that overpopulation will bring the extinction of
the human race. When one looks at the arguments that these people present, its quite overwhelming
the amount of evidence that's supports their argument. On the other side, the evidence for the

Malthus goes on to state that the earth is filled with life in the animal and vegetable kingdoms, and
that if left unhindered could fill all the worlds in the universe, but necessity, "that imperious all
pervading law of nature" restrains them within their prescribed boundaries. Man cannot escape from
this fact. "Among plants and animals its effects are waste of seed, sickness, and premature death.
Among mankind, misery and vice "* Malthus in his article goes on to state what kinds of positive
preventive checks there are for population growth and uses England as an example. The difficulties
of raising a family acts as a preventive check, as well as some of the distresses of the lower classes
in providing food and adequate attention to children also acts as a preventitive check. Malthus states
that the preventive check operates in some effect to all ranks of society in England. For example, he
says that there are some men even in the highest rank not willing to start a family due to the fact that
they have to give up many of their own leisurely activities, or not willing to give up the money to
start a family. ‘These consideration are certainly trivial, but a preventive foresight of this kind has
objects of much greater weight for its contemplation as we go lower."* A good situation that
embodies this quote is that of a single man that earns just enough money to be considered to be in
the class of a gentleman. If this man gets married he must know

Role Of Human Capital In Economic Development

 • 1. Role of Human Capital in Economic Development CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION a) BACKGROUND Kenya is one of the less Developed countries that are endowed with relatively good levels of resources and labor. However, there are still a lot to be done to tap those resources into viable productivity and industrialization levels. One way of achieving this is by maximizing the use of both physical and human capital. In or case we shall consider human capital. Human capital, according to Adam Smith refers to the acquired and useful abilities of all the inhabitants or members of the society. The acquisition of such talents by the maintenance of the acquirer, during his education, study or apprenticeship, always costs a real expense, which is a capital fixed and realized, as it were in his ... • 8. The Impact of China's One-Child Policy on Its Economic... : What is the impact of China's one–child policy on its economic growth over the years? This paper will show that the standard econometric estimation conceals the takeoff effect and thus underestimates the economic impact of demographic changes. In effect, the impact of China's one– child policy moved the timing of the economic take off by a decade. The original intent of the one– child policy was for economical purposes. The authorities envisioned reducing the demand of natural resources, reducing the rate of exploitation, and reducing unemployment caused by surplus labor, and maintaining a steady labor rate. 100 words Keywords: economic transition, one–child policy, and demographic changes. JEL Classification: 1. Introduction At the start of China's economic reforms in late 1970s, the Chinese leadership established population control as one of its main priorities. The post–Mao leadership believed that China population control was the key to ensure growth in per capita income. This led to the elevation of the one–child policy. The one–child policy of China was the official family planning policy that was aimed at controlling the population of China. The one–child was introduced in 1979 mainly to help in alleviating economic, social and environmental problems in China. It was estimated by demographers that the policy helped avert about 200 million births between 1979 and 2009 although some other estimates puts it at 400 million. Assisting to that destruction is the increasing number of people that make up the worlds population today. Overpopulation is the condition of giving birth to a number of people living on earth that over exceeds the amount of space, resources and land found on our planet. According to reports from the United Nations (2007), "World population is currently growing by approximately 75 million people per year." Other sources of transportation emissions are freight trucks, aircraft, trains and boats. Emissions from transportation depend on the number of trips or miles traveled by each type of vehicle each year, which are in turn influenced by larger economic trends and consumer behavior. Over the long term, changes in the fuel efficiency of vehicles (e.g., mileage), and in the type of fuel used can also influence the level of emissions. We live in an age of instant coffee, instant tea, and even instant mashed potatoes. We can walk down the street at 5 in the morning and get a gallon of milk or even a weeks worth of groceries at our discretion. Even though it is great that food is now readily available at all times, this convenience comes at a price, for both the producer and the consumer. Farmers are cheated out of money and are slaves to big business, workers and animals are mistreated. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, big business controls the farmers by capitalizing on widely used commodities. For example, the company Monsanto which is based in St. Louis, Missouri protects its dominance over the genetically modified crops such as the soy bean with the use of a patent law. Because of this, Monsanto's patented genes "account for 95 percent of all soy beans and 80 percent of all corn grown in the U.S.," (Associated Press). Although genetically modifying the soy bean crop has made it more readily available and more sustainable, this comes at a high price to farmers. Monsanto continues to raise their prices, which forces farmers to accrue even more debt, and there is no sign of the rise in the seed prices stopping. Since a lot of the farmers are under contract with Monsanto, there is nothing they can do about this unethical policy in fear of losing their job. Since 1991, the southern half of Somalia, a poverty stricken African nation, has seen various tribal militias battle for dominance and power over individual regions of the country. Violence has plagued Mogadishu, the capital, since warlords ousted the former president. Mere months after the collapse of the government, men, women and children in torn clothes ran helplessly towards packages dropped from military planes towards the hot sand of their tiny village. This action was one of many attempts to help underdeveloped nations receive food by the United Nations' World Food Programme. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In knowing this, Hardin however, chooses to eliminate the statistic entirely. Within this scenario Hardin appeals to the readers with the presentation of a circumstance in which only two outcomes seem probable. Either the passengers help ten more individuals and drown, or they neglect to help any, and float securely away with the "safety factor" still intact. Hardin disregards the idea of helping some people, even if selected in a fairly arbitrary way: "Suppose we decide to preserve our small safety factor and admit no more to the lifeboat. Our survival is then possible although we will have to be constantly on guard against boarding parties" (2). He insinuates that once the decision is made to help some, the lifeboat passengers must attempt to save all of those drowning, which is clearly not feasible given the carrying capacity of the lifeboat. Although the boat's capacity should not exceed the admission of more than ten people, why not admit three, four, or even those ten? It seems rather unreasonable to deny help to every individual, when, although not all can be rescued, the boat clearly holds the space for more. The same ideology may be applied in other philosophical debates, including the death penalty, as we discussed in lecture. Performance Analysis Of Fso Communication System Performance Analysis of FSO Communication System: Effects of Fog, Rain and Humidity Abstract–Free Space Optics (FSO) is one of the most promising new access technologies. FSO provides the transmission of data with unlimited bandwidth. The atmospheric attenuation is caused by two main factors absorption and scattering. This paper investigates a performance study of free space optics channel for variable wavelengths 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm at distance range of 1 km. The simulation reports minimum BER for NRZ–OOK modulation technique at different receiver diameters in presence of fog, rain and humidity attenuation. The results shows how to improve the system to achieve minimum BER and maximize the power received that can be detect at distance 1 km. Keywords–free space optics (FSO); fog; rain; humidity. Introduction FSO communication, also termed as optical wireless, is an optical communication technology that uses line of sight communication system and tries to achieve the need for high bandwidth over short distances [1]. There are various atmospheric attenuation effects on FSO link such as fog, rain, snow, humidity and temperature [2]. The majority of FSO systems are using 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm [3–5] wavelengths. Research studies have shown that fog is the most important factor because the size of fog particles is comparable to the transmission wavelength of optical and near infrared wave [6]. Absorbance and Spectrophotometry Experiment 2: Absorbance and Spectrophotometry ABSTRACT: This was an investigation into the effects of different wavelengths of light on methylene blue and carmine red on the absorbance value on a spectrophotometer. A spectrophotometer is used to measure light intensity by emitting a single light source through a cuvette of coloured solution. The particles in the solution, which are coloured, absorb the light depending on how concentrated it is and this produces an electronic reading from the photometer which is the absorbance value. The maximum absorption was found for both solutions and was used to calculate the molar extinction coefficient of methylene blue. An unknown concentration of methylene blue was calculated by using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Figure 4. LITERATURE REVIEW Estimates reported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD,1997) suggest that several countries have experienced very rapid growth of the private sector during the transition period. A number of studies have suggested that investment and growth in developing economies is positively associated with indicators of 'openness' and export promotion (Balasubramanyam et al., 1996). Such findings may suggest that investors prefer countries with relatively liberal trade regimes and few constraints on profit repatriation, possibly within regions with wider supra–national free trade arrangements. De Mello (2000) analyzed the time series and panel data for 32 OECD and non–OECD countries for the period 1970–90. He estimated the impact of FDI on capital accumulation and output growth in the recipient economy supporting the FDI led growth hypothesis. Similarly, Soto (2000); Alfaro, Chanda, Kalelmi–Ozcan, Sayek (2004); Li and Liu (2005) found positive impact of FDI on GDP growth. They all used FDI measure as percentage of GDP. Liu et al. Nieman and Nieuwenhuizen (2009) states that the contribution of entrepreneurs to the economy can be attributed to their special qualities. They come up with new technological possibilities hence are able to establish large businesses from these. Carland etal. Timmons (2000) believes entrepreneurship as the process of creating and seizing an opportunity and pursuing it, regardless of resources currently controlled. Nieman and Nieuwenhuizen (2009) define an entrepreneur as the person who sees an opportunity in the market, gathers resources and creates and grows a business venture to meet these needs. They also further states that he or she bears risk of the venture and is rewarded with profit if it succeed. With different definitions of entrepreneurship defined by different authors through the way they define an entrepreneur, the researcher generally defines entrepreneurship as the act of being an entrepreneur who establishes business through the organisation of resources taking risk with the aim of realising profit. Countries in the world hold different attitudes to the population policy, some of them tend to delay the increase of population while others introduce policies to encourage childbirth. After centuries of continual growth, which started at the first industrial revolution, the global population reached over 7 billion individuals in 2013. Research by Ezeh, Bongaarts and Mberu (2012) states that increasing population is a threat to individuals and societies by bring problems based on unsatisfied demand. However, the same degree of pollution increases in cities with population of 10 million people is 3.13 parts per billion (NASA, 2013). The contribution to air pollution from surface–level NO2 is about a factor of five when population in cities increased from 1 million to 10 million people in China. According to Engelman (2009), falling human numbers is a powerful key to long–term environmental sustainability. Therefore it could be concluded that the world environment can hardly maintain an increasing population for its limited resources and probably pollution. Another reason for the world cannot continue to provide for increasing population is that rising rate of birth especially in poorest developing countries aggravates the trend toward greater inequality, which means the rich getting much richer while others are opposite. Ezeh, Bongaarts and Mberu (2012) found that in general, the growth of population is rapider in poorer countries than developed countries. For instance, the average absolute relative difference (AARD) between two profiles for each superficial gas velocity was calculated by Eq. 2, and it was found to be 2.17% and 3.47% for a superficial gas velocity of 5 and 30 cm, respectively. AARD=1/N ∑_(i=1)^N▒|(ε_1 (r)–ε_2 (r))/(ε_1 (r))| (2) where ε_1 (r) and ε_2 (r) represent gas holdup values of experiment No.1 and No.2, respectively at the corresponding dimensionless radius positions while N represents the number of data points along the diameter of the column. Furthermore, the standard deviation (SD), which represents the devision of the measured values of gas holdup from the mean 〈ε〉 of these values along the diametrical profiles, was also calculated by Eq. 3. SD=√(1/(N–1) ∑_(i=1)^N▒(ε_i–〈ε〉)^2 ) (3) It was found that SD values were minimal, within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Medical Physics Personal Statement At a time when it was popular practice for kids growing up in my country to aspire to become doctors, lawyers and engineers, for no rational reasons owing to naiveté that comes with such tender ages, I had known I wanted to save lives. I just didn't know in what capacity it would be. I can safely say that I grew up faster than most children my age, I had known what it meant to lose a father at six, I had seen an aunt die of what they said was cancer at ten. I had also known the frustration of not being able to do anything to save both. And of course, I couldn't have. I am a grown man now, equipped with the rationality that comes with education, and most importantly the informed will to save the world. And I have found an important tool in Medical Physics. Early in life, I developed an aversion for linearity of mind. As I grew to grasp the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, I discovered what I call the harmony of science. • 39. Global Population Control and Environmental Policies Essay Global population control and environmental policies are the subject of international controversy. The rate at which human beings are populating the earth and polluting it are some of the most important factors that face the global society today. As of March 2009, the world population is about 6.76 billion. With the high rate of population increase, the global population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2040. With the number of people in the world today and the amount of consumer goods being purchased and used, these factors present a problem to the state of the environment in the near future. Over the past 50 years, the world's population has more than doubled and more than 1 billion of the world's people do not have enough food to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These figures strike a resemblance to how fast the earth is gaining population. Many scientists believe that high–income nations present a much greater threat to the ecosystem because there are more people in these countries consuming goods at a faster rate than low–income countries. Ecosystems cannot support high rates of population growth combined with environmental damage. The carrying capacity of the earth's ecosystems are being surpassed and the ecosystems of many nations are being ruined at a very fast pace. The rate at which country's populations are growing, it will not be very long before many of the carrying capacities are surpassed. Environmental degradation involves taking natural resources from the environment and re– introducing them to the environment in the form of pollution. One of the reasons for environmental degradation is greediness. People are trying to maintain high levels of wealth and do not care at what cost to the environment. The perfect example of this would be the current situation in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The land is being stripped of its natural resources everyday and is left behind a barren land. The rate at which the air is being polluted in Fort McMurray is triple that of anywhere else in western Canada. The ethical dilemma is whether these procedures should be done on Ashley based on the parents' request. There are no legal or professional standards for this. By adhering to the parents' request, the physician would be eliminating menstrual pain. The estrogen therapy would stop Ashley from growing taller. Some scholars argue pupil –teacher ratio is alternative measure of resources invested in education which measure the quantity of education but not the quality. Further more, some research didn't use the system approach (input, throughputs, and output.) which made some scholar to believe it underestimate the effect of education spending by failing to observe the possible indirect effect on economic growth. In order to ensure the economy delivers on its potentials, the country experimented with two development philosophies–a private sector–led growth in which the private sector served as the "engine house" of the economy and a public sector – driven growth in which the government assumed the "commanding heights" of the economy. The initial low level of private sector development, however, led to public sector dominance of the economy, encouraged by growth in the oil sector (UNDP, 2009). It is noteworthy that since the advent of civilian rule in 1999, growth performance has improved significantly. The last seven years witnessed an average growth rate of about 6 percent (UNDP, 2009:5; CBN, 2008). However, economic growth has not resulted in appreciable decline in unemployment and poverty prevalence. Human development has remained unimpressive as shown by the indicators in Table 1. Over the years, successive Nigerian governments recognized the importance of human capital formation in the development process and have embarked on various programmes and projects which led to the establishment of educational institutions and health centres throughout the country. • 51. Population: A Vital Indicator of Economic Growth Essay Economic growth in a city, state, or country is characterized by steady growth in the productive capacity of the economy or a growth of national income (Fernandez– Villaverde, 2001). The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate is most commonly used to measure economic growth because it is a reflection of the total change in a country's national output (Filardo, 1999). This growth rate is used to predict the direction of an economy. A positive growth rate indicates a positive economy with more jobs, consumption and income while a negative growth indicates an economic decline (Filardo, 1999). Economic growth constitutes superior productivity, prosperity, and increased capital per capita resulting in a higher quality of living. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Land use is highly dependent upon the social interactions and demographics of the surrounding population. For a city to be considered "sustainable", it must be an environment suitable for efficient public transport and social interaction within the surrounding population (Jenks, 1996). The demand for different types of land use is based on population and economic developments shape, whereas the allocation of land use change is determined by regional and local conditions. One important approach to micro–level perspective modeling is multi–agent simulation. Multi– agent models are part of distributed artificial intelligence methods (Verburg et al., 2004). An agent is an entity that is able to act on itself within a given environment and communicate with other agents and whose knowledge and behaviors are a result of its observations (Sanders, Pumain, Mathian, Guerin–Pace, & Bura, 1997). Multi–agent models can clarify the degree to which system–level properties emerge from local evolutionary forces and the impact those local processes have on the continued functioning of the multi–agent universe (Levin, 1998). While the simulated behavior at the aggregate levels aids in the development of new theories connecting individual behavior to collective behavior, the model is not very useful outside of the micro–level. • 65. Effects of Human Capital on Maize Production in Ghana Essay Agriculture constitutes about one–third of GDP and provides employment for about two–thirds of the labor force in Sub–Saharan Africa. Productivity growth in agriculture is therefore an important element for economic growth and development. Yet, growth in this sector has been slow. According to the World Bank (1989), agricultural growth for the continent from 1980 to 1989 averaged only 1.8% per year. Therefore, "improving this growth rate is of increasing concern for both governments and international organizations" (Pinckney 1995). Investing in the human capital base is regarded as one of the most effective ways to improve agricultural productivity (Nelson and Phelps, 1966; Romer, 1990; Bindlish and Evenson, 1997; Birdsall et al., 1999). ... Although its contribution to GDP decreased from 43.5% in 1990 to 21.5% in 2013, it still remains a significant player in the economy of the country (Ghana Statistical Service 2008; ISSER 2011; CIA 2013). The agricultural sector employs about 60% of the workforce in Ghana and can therefore be regarded as the backbone of the Ghanaian economy (ISSER, 2011). Maize is the most important cereal crop produced in Ghana and it is also the most widely consumed staple food in Ghana (Morris et al., 1999). Maize accounts for 55% of grain output in the country. Maize is also an important component of poultry feed and to a lesser extent the livestock feed sector, as well as a substitute for the brewing industry. Although maize productivity has been increasing over the years, studies show that Ghanaian farmers are yet to produce enough to meet the nation's demand. The forests have global implications not just on life but on the quality of it. Trees improve the quality of the air that species breath, determine rainfall and replenish the atmosphere. One of the products that have been most important to human economies has always been wood. Wood is durable, light weight, easily worked, waterproof, and a good fiber source. Wood is used in almost every aspect of our lives, for building materials, living, and just surviving. We need wood to build our homes to live in and buildings in which we work and spend the other resource that comes from trees "money". Essay The Ashley Treatment: Practical, But Ethical? – Hitler times – medical experiments – Kennedy sister – lobotomy – Potential grave consequences that can result from irresponsible, or criminal, medical experiments. While we must be vigilant to protect innocent victims from such experimentation we cannot let that stifle our duty to continue making advances in healthcare and improving the lives of patients. – Moral obligations should typically not be so demanding that enormous sacrificies must be made in order to fulfill them (Liao, Savulescu, & Sheehan, 2007). – Beauchamp and Childress – ethical principles of autonomy – One must ask if a treatment is practical does that make it ethical? 'Hopes of keeping her as comfortable as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research has shown that females with disabilities are twice likely to suffer sexual abuse as females without disabilities (Clark & Vasta, 2007) Reasoning (1) Less likely to develop skin breakdown, infections and pneumonia. Limiting Ashley's adult height would reduce, or possibly stop the progression of her scoliosis and help prevent bone fractures that may occur as she became harder to lift and transfer. ("The Ashley Treatment," 2007). (2) Keep her care more manageable, so they could continue to care for her in their home with limited outside help. Ashley's physicians, Dr. Daniel Gunther and Dr. Douglas Diekema, and the Seattle Children's Hospital Board of Ethics approved the series of treatments after much debate and research and concluded it would be in her best interest. July of 2004, Ashley underwent hysterectomy and breast bud removal. After recovering, she was started on a high dose estrogen therapy which was completed in December 2006. The Debate Contrasts those who argue that it violates the child's human rights and is for the sake of convenience for the parents, versus those who argue that this treatment is in the best interest of the child because it will provide better quality of life (Clark & Vista, 2007). The fundamental question asks if Ashley loses her human rights because she is unaware of them.

 • 74. Optical Fiber Sensors Essay Optical fiber sensors are very important devices to detect and monitor ionizing radiation in nuclear based technologies such as industrial radiography, nuclear medicine, spacecraft and satellite instrumentation, and also in nuclear power facilities. Reliability of other conventional radiation detectors in space and terrestrial application is much affected by electromagnetic interference and exposure to fire and explosion potential hazards. However the functionality of optical fiber at extremely high dose radiation still a challenge where radiation induced attenuation can be increased for permanent damage of the sensor. There is a need to develop a new sensing material with small dimension and low mass such as single mode silica optical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2013). There is a need to replace 3H–based sensor to detect neutron in context of nuclear nonproliferation(Runkle 2011) and silica optical fiber with better resistant to radiation damage (Xue et al. 2012) is the other very close a safe cheaper possible neutron sensor to be considered. In addition, its other characteristic of having low attenuation losses provides a wide bandwidth for long–distance wireless communication so that the exposure of radiation to workers can be avoided during radiation detection and monitoring operation. Ionizing radiation such as x–ray, gamma, alpha, beta and neutron radiations, are not only harmful to human health(Azzam et al. 2012) and environment(Mothersill&Seymour 2014), but also can damage the electronic devices(Wang et al. 2014). The source of these ionizing radiations are from radioactive materials, x–ray tubes, particle accelerators such as ion beams, nuclear weapons and reactors, cosmic rays from space and from natural rocks and minerals. Exposure of extremely high energy electromagnetic radiation such as x–ray can lead to failure in silicon sensors(Klanner et al. 2013). The increasing radiation induced attenuation can lead to permanent damage of optical fiber(Kovačević et al. 2013). So there is a need to develop better sensors with good radiation resistance such as Ge doped optical fiber sensors in radiant environment. SiO2 and plastic type optical fiber are two types of material used in any research and development of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 76. Economic Comparison of India and China Essay examples Economic Comparison of India and China From April to June 2005, India's GDP grew at 8.1 per cent, compared with 7.6 per cent in the same period the year before. More impressively, India is achieving this result with just half of China's level of domestic investment in new factories and equipment, and only 10 per cent of China's foreign direct investment... ... in 2003 and 2004, [China] was investing close to 50 per cent of its GDP in domestic plant and equipment – roughly equivalent to India's entire GDP. That is higher than any other country... China's growth stems from massive accumulation of resources, while India's growth comes from increasing efficiency... In the long run, that's not going to work without more open competition, creativity and entrepreneurship. India's hidden strength is that the country is already extremely entrepreneurial – but in the informal sector. An Indian friend mentions that most of the cars we see on the roads, and many computers in the offices, are assembled in small, informal factories, outside the law, to avoid the many regulations and taxes that still curbs the Indian economy. Imagine what the Indians could do if all that energy was legalized. It is quicker to start a new business in China than in India. If India's labor laws are better than China's, it's only because we're doing thing in socialism lite. The Doing Business database ranks China a modest 91st on the overall ease of doing business, with India worse but not dramatically so at 116th... in China it's quicker to start a business, get goods from factory floor on board a container ship, and register property. But Indians – perhaps surprisingly – seem to have more flexible labour laws and fewer hassles with licences. In India, about 670 industries are completely reserved for very small companies, which means that the economy lose the benefits of scale, don't get foreign investments and are unable to compete globally. In 2001, the average Indian clothing company had only 50 machines, compared to 500 in the typical Chinese plant. The same problem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 78. The Ashley Treatment The Ashley Treatment has been, and still remains, controversial. A statement written by Ashley's mom and dad stated that "Ashley had a normal birth, but her mental and motor faculties did not develop. Over the years, neurologists, geneticists, and other specialists conducted every known traditional and experimental test, but still could not determine a diagnosis or a cause. Doctor's call her condition 'static encephalopathy of unknown etiology', which means an insult to the brain of unknown origin or cause, and one that will not improve." The "The Ashley Treatment" is now a generic phrase coined in the health profession that refers to growth–stunting procedures for children with severe disabilities. This name was given in reference to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is not clear whether or not the court would have stopped Ashley's parents from modifying her body in the way they did. It seems likely that, at a minimum, the mastectomy would have been delayed until it was clear that Ashley had in fact developed large uncomfortable breasts, something that was merely speculative at the time of her surgery. It is certain, however, that imposition of limitations and process in her case would have gone a long way toward reducing the risk that the procedures caused Ashley more harm than any benefits they achieved. Obviously, time cannot be turned back for Ashley, but future cases can and should be regulated more carefully (Ouellette, 2009). It has been more than five years since the Ashley Treatment but the topic is still very much alive for a few reasons. One being, that the treatment is still being given (at least 12 given so far in the U.S.), secondly because of the legal issues raised and thirdly due to the moral issues it raises. In my opinion, the moral issues it raises are enough to oppose the treatment in itself. The justification behind the parents giving their daughter The Ashley Treatment were to improve her the quality of life by keeping Ashley from suffering from menstrual pain, and enabling her to become more mobile due to her lack of weight and height. This argument also states that the lives of the parents will be made easier in caring for their terminally disabled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Prader-Willi Syndrome Prader–Willi Syndrom Prader–Willi Syndrome is a serious genetic disorder that begins at birth with no known cure ; causing mental retardation, short stature, low muscle tone, incomplete sexual development, and its main charecteristic, the desire to eat everything and anything in sight. Prader–Willi syndrome was first known as Prader–Labhart–Willi Syndrome after three Swiss doctors who first described the disorder in 1956. The doctors described a small group of kids with obesity, short stature and mental deficiency , neonatal hypotonia (floppiness) and a desire to constantly eat because they are always hungry. The average IQ testing shows that people with PWS are mildly retarded, the range is from severely retarded to not retarded, with 40% having borderline retardation or just a low normal intelligence. Most affected children, besides their IQ scores, will have many, severe learning disabilities, and will show poor academic performance no matter what their IQ shows to their mental abilities. There are many signs and symptoms of PWS that show up before birth.some are decreased fetal movement in 80–90% and having an abnormal delivery in 20–30% due to having a really floppy baby. There are two distinct clinical stages of PWS. Stage 1 Babys with PWS are called "floppy babies" a lot. Thats because they have weak muscles, officially it is known as hypotonia. This hypotonia, which almost always occurs, could be mild to severe. Neonatal hypotonia makes sucking difficult, and a special feeding method called a gavage is used.A gavage the placing of a tube into the stomach through the mouth. They use it during the first days of life a lot.. • 82. Overpopulation a Problem? Is Overpopulation a Serious Problem? This question seems to be question that is asked quite frequently lately. In the last two centuries, population has skyrocketed. In 1800 the world population was only at 1 billion, and today it's estimated that the world population exceeds six billion people. With overpopulation, many problems have arisen. Some believe that overpopulation is the reason for world hunger, global population will reach crisis proportions by 2050, and some believe that overpopulation will bring the extinction of the human race. When one looks at the arguments that these people present, its quite overwhelming the amount of evidence that's supports their argument. On the other side, the evidence for the opposing ... Malthus goes on to state that the earth is filled with life in the animal and vegetable kingdoms, and that if left unhindered could fill all the worlds in the universe, but necessity, "that imperious all pervading law of nature" restrains them within their prescribed boundaries. Man cannot escape from this fact. "Among plants and animals its effects are waste of seed, sickness, and premature death. Among mankind, misery and vice "* Malthus in his article goes on to state what kinds of positive preventive checks there are for population growth and uses England as an example. The difficulties of raising a family acts as a preventive check, as well as some of the distresses of the lower classes in providing food and adequate attention to children also acts as a preventitive check. Malthus states that the preventive check operates in some effect to all ranks of society in England. For example, he says that there are some men even in the highest rank not willing to start a family due to the fact that they have to give up many of their own leisurely activities, or not willing to give up the money to start a family. ‘These consideration are certainly trivial, but a preventive foresight of this kind has objects of much greater weight for its contemplation as we go lower."* A good situation that embodies this quote is that of a single man that earns just enough money to be considered to be in the class of a gentleman.
