How Does Renfield Affect The Character Of Dracula
In Alice's Adventures In Wonderland And Through The Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll wrote,"I can't
explain myself, I'm afraid, sir,' said Alice, 'Because I'm not myself you see." Renfield, in Bram
Stoker's novel Dracula, is a character who is not himself for the most part of the book. He affects the
reader's perception of character, the plot, and the story's mood by enhancing the gothic elements and
horror of the novel through his insane tendencies, his allowance of Dracula to get to Mina, and the
overall grotesque way in which his body is described. Stoker included Renfield to compare Dracula
with a human with the same tendencies. His mental illness is defined by Dr. Seward, "My homicidal
maniac is of a peculiar kind...a zoophagous (life–eating) maniac. What he desires is to absorb as
many lives as he can..."(Stoker 74). This is a contrast to dracula who oly wants to survive by
drinking the blood of his prey, not killing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Renfield allows Dracula in in this scene, "...I found myself opening the sash and saying to Him,
'Come in, Lord and Master!' The rats were all gone, but He slid into the room through the sash..."
(Stoker 296). Renfield lets Dracula into the house, giving him free reign over his travel. Without
Renfield, Dracula would not have been able to get into the asylum, staying away from Lucy. Stoker
uses Renfield as an example of human indulgence, even though it is not right, the temptation is
overpowering. Renfield helps to advance the plot by fulfilling Dracula's plans as well, "There was a
fearful scream which almost froze our hearts to hear. As he had placed the Wafer on Mina's
forehead, it had seared it...had burned into the flesh as though it had been a piece of white–hot
metal."(Stoker 313). He lets Mina be turned vampiristic and she ends up having her soul tainted.
Without Renfield, the group would not have gone after

Lucian Freud Essay
Lucian Freud
Freud, Lucian (1922– ). German–born British painter. He was born in
Berlin, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, came to England with his parents in 1931, and acquired
British nationality in 1939. His earliest love was drawing, and he began to work full time as an artist
after being invalided out of the Merchant Navy in 1942. In 1951 his Interior at
Paddington (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) won a prize at the Festival of Britain, and since then he
has built up a formidable reputation as one of the most powerful contemporary figurative painters.
Portraits and nudes are his specialities, often observed in arresting close–up.
His early work was meticulously painted, so he has sometimes been described as a `Realist' (or ...

Freud's subjects are often the people in his life; friends, family, fellow painters, lovers, children. As
he has said 'The subject matter is autobiographical, it's all to do with hope and memory and
sensuality and involvement really'. Paintings in the exhibition will range from Girl with Roses 1948
to Garden, Notting Hill Gate 1997, and highlights include the marvellous series of portraits of his
mother, portraits of fellow painters John Minton, Michael Andrews and Frank
Auerbach, and other major works including Large Interior W11 (after
Watteau) 1981–3. Sharp pictures of his youth will contrast with the works of his maturity, paintings
filled with life and liveliness, each in its way a celebration.
'I paint people', Freud has said, 'not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they
are like, but how they happen to be'. Until the mid 1950's, Freud worked in a tightly focused style,
which he had begun to use at the East Anglian School of Drawing and
Painting, run by Cedric Morris. The school was very informal; as Freud said, there was 'No teaching
much but there were models and you could work in your own room'. In many ways he worked by
trial and error:
Landscape with Birds (no. 3, shown in room 1) was an experiment with the kind of enamel paint he
thought was used by Picasso. As he said later, 'Learning to paint is literally learning to use paint.'
Around 1956 Freud exchanged his finely pointed

Comparing Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the 1972 Film...
Bram Stoker's Dracula is not only a classic story of men and monsters, but a dramatic reactionary
work to the perceived threats to Victorian society in nineteenth century England. In modern times
there have been many film adaptations of the novel, each developing a unique analysis or criticism
of the literary text within the framework of the society and time period in which it was created. The
1972 film Blacula is one of the most culturally specific variations on the story of Dracula, and
highlights many of the themes and messages found in Stoker's original text. Among the primary
similarities between the novel and the film is the portrayal of race, sexuality, nationality, and culture,
and the characterization in each work speaks to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dracula is of mixed racial heritage and blood "in the whirlpool of European races," a concept which
would have been fearful to the novel's white, upper–class English audience. This widespread
xenophobia, a fear and hatred of foreigners, was a reaction by Victorian England to the perceived
threat of outsiders to white genetic purity. Dracula's real threat is not in the physical destruction of
Western Europe, but in the assimilation, reproduction, and infestation caused by the literal and
figurative mixing of his barbarian animal blood with that of the "superior" English race. The concept
of eugenics, the "qualitative and quantitative improvement of the human genome" (Galton 99),
gained widespread popularity during Stoker's lifetime and became a prevalent theme in the works of
many authors aiming to make a social commentary or criticism on the invasion of England by
foreign peoples. Adolph Hitler would later adopt eugenic ideals in the intended creation of a "master
race," one which victimized many of the same groups and relied upon almost identical anti–Semitic
imagery as the earlier Victorian proponents (Hauner 15). Race is a key element in the movie
Blacula, in which the film's eponymous villain is an ancient African prince cursed by Count Dracula
to walk the earth for eternity in search of human blood. Blacula is literally and metaphorically an
updated version of the Transylvanian count, adapted for a primarily

Female Sexuality
The female sexuality plays the very important role in both DRACULA and MAXIMUM GAGA.
They both talk about the virginity and dissoluteness in female sexuality, but have different views
about it. In DRACULA, only virginity is accepted; dissoluteness is completely intolerable. Stoker
thinks virginity is very precious, and he want the readers know that women will be punished for
being lascivious, so each female character has different ending in terms of their virginity. In
MAXIMUM GAGA, Lara didn't give an exact attitude about the virginity and dissoluteness in
female sexuality; she thinks they can exist at the same time. In DRACULA, the general content is
about the fighting between Dracula and humans, since Dracula tries to transform all ... Show more

Men don't appreciate women being dissipated. They wanted to kill her to make her back to normal.
Also, Lucy has the worse ending which all the guys she loved and loved her before want to kill her
and Van Helsing cut off her head and filled her mouth with garlic. All of these occurred because she
was not very pure and loyal when she is a human; she needs to pay for her dissoluteness.
The three sisters had already been transformed to be vampires by Dracula, and Stoker makes them
as the most sexual ones. In Jonathan's journal, "The girl went on her knees, and bent over me,
simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive.
(Stoker, 43)" Their ends are very miserable. They were all killed by Van Helsing. Like Lucy, they
also need to pay for their dissoluteness, which supports Stoker's view about the preciousness of
virginity.
In MAXIMUM GAGA, Lara also put a lot of weight on female sexuality, virginity and dissoluteness
to be specifically. Basically, the book is all about sexuality, there are sex between human and
machines, orifice and all the crazy staffs. The big argument in the book is the relationship between
virginity and dissoluteness in female sexuality. It's kind of complex that women have both virginity
and dissoluteness at the same time. It looks like female is very dissipated here; however, they still
have an idea about virginity. We see the dissoluteness at the most parts in the book. All the

A Comparison Of Dracula And Dracula
Dracula is the infamous vampire that readers were first introduced to by Irish author Bram Stoker in
1897 when they read his novel Dracula (Stoker). The author conveys the story of Count Dracula, a
mysterious being that is half man, half vampire that sucks blood from the neck of his victims to stay
alive (Stoker). This novel is an outstanding masterpiece of work, which is why it has been a
prototype for various movie releases over the decades, such as Nosferatu, Horror of Dracula,
Dracula A Love Story, and Bram Stoker's Dracula ("Dracula (Universal Classics)"). When a novel is
a basis for a movie the hope is that the characters coincide from one to the other, which leads to the
exploration of the resemblances and modifications of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He cannot come into a house unless invited or walk in water and his favorite meal is human blood
(Stoker). While these traits are consistent in both the novel and the movie there are differences
(Stoker). Starting with the novel, it describes Count Dracula's shadow coordinates with his body, yet
in the movie, his shadow works separately from his body movements ("Dracula (Universal
Classics)"). The next modification of Count Dracula's character in the novel is, he cannot be in or
near the sunlight or it will kill him, however, in the movie, he meets Mina in the daytime and it does
not harm him (Bram Stoker's). Then, in the novel, Dracula is a purely evil, terrifying blood hungry
monster that wreaks havoc on anyone he meets and feels the need to take life or end life with his
arch nemesis being with anyone who wants to preserve life (Stoker). But in the movie when he
meets Mina on the streets of London, he pursues a courtship with her and he begins to develop
feelings for Mina (Bram Stoker's). When he proclaims his love for her and refuses to condemn her
to the life of a vampire, he is no longer a vile, evil monster (Bram Stoker's). These modifications to
Count Dracula's character in the movie make the audience see him as a vulnerable, loving man with
feelings for a woman who reminds him of his dead wife Elisabeta (Bram

Gender Symbolism In The Fences
Fences Essay In the Fences, by August Wilson shows that life of African Americans in the U.S. in
the 1950s with the story of Troy and his family. Wilson uses the symbol of the fence to show the
desires of each character like Rose's desire is to keep her family together, Troy's desire is to keep
death out and to be not bound forever, and Bono's desire is to follow Troy, his best friend, as an
example of the right way to live and to be with Rose and Troy who are basically his family. Rose
and the other seen characters represent people and show gender roles of the time, like Rose is a
housewife, Troy is the provider. Also Cory is the new generation of emotion over responsibility,
Gabriel represents the war heros that were permanently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bono: Some people build fences to keep people out... and other people build fences to keep people
in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you." (1&2.i.)
Here August Wilson in the first part shows a little of the gender roles of the 1950s where men are the
boss of the house and women are subservient to them. It also shows that Rose did not go in as told
but remained there with them and Troy accepted that he could not tell her what to do. The image or
action of Rose not leaving shows the changing of the times in other words the 1950s on the fence to
between the old ways and the new ones. In the first part of what Bono says describes Troy with
death and the other part describes Rose with her love for her family and desire to keep everyone
close and happy. The character Gabriel (Uncle Gabe) is a mix of many different things and people
that of the time and believes he signals the opening of heaven's gate as his interpretation of the
fence. Gabriel is Troy's half brother who went and fought in the war. He was medically discharged
after receiving a head injury that permanently reduced his mental functions. Troy helped Gabriel get
a settlement and helps spend/manage the money. Troy used the money to buy himself a house that
Gabriel originally lived in as well until Gabriel moved out at his own wish. Wilson wrote: " Gabriel:

Why is Dracula such a great horror story? Essay
Why is Dracula such a great horror story?
In my opinion 'Dracula' is a great horror story because it is highly entertaining in its idea of
vampirism, its atmospheric descriptions, powerful characterisation and the horrific death of Lucy.
The novel is also interesting because of the religious perspectives, such as the use of garlic, holy
water and the crucifix as weapons against evil.
Jonathan Harker's journey to Count Dracula's home is described in great detail. The atmosphere not
only adds to the dangerous ride to
Dracula's Castle, but also comes alive as we're reading it. The atmosphere surrounding Harker is
incredibly frightening but the detail and descriptions used are so astounding that we can feel the
'strange
chills'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The
'paralysis of fear' tells us that Harker is clearly too scared to move a muscle.
The detail is very interesting. Each word kept me entertained, as I'm sure it does every reader.
Harker arrives at Count Dracula's Castle. This part of the story is fascinating; Harkers first encounter
with Dracula is also 'strange'.
Dracula is described as half–man and half–animal. This is very peculiar. He is a 'tall, old man,' who
is 'clad in black head to toe.'
I would definitely not be happy, if I were to meet him. Dracula has
'hair in palms' and also 'massive eyebrows.' Harker also says
Dracula's 'breath was rank.' This image is certainly odd and Dracula is not very attractive! This
description of Dracula is frightening for harker mostly, but great for the reader. Stoker's use of
language is totally luminous. These animalistic features of Dracula are eerie not only to Harker but
also to the readers.
Dracula's domestic attentions towards harker are eccentric. The Count does everything himself. He
takes Harker's 'luggage' and 'opened the door.' You would wonder why there aren't any 'servants' in a
huge castle. Harker realises this oddity, so he 'looked for a bell' but couldn't find one. This adds
another mysterious aspect towards Dracula and should interest the readers. The reader reads on,
searching for an explanation for a reason why there are no servants. We assure that
Dracula is unable to employ

Bram Stoker's Popula
The book I chose to read for the book review is Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker. It is a Gothic
horror novel and was published May 26, 1897. 1897 was the height of the British Empire expansion.
Great Britain had expanded to much of the land of Africa, Asia, and North America, which they used
to fuel its tremendous military and economic power. But this high point was also the start of the
declined to the British power. America's and Germany's rise in powers threated to remove Great
Britain as the most powerful country. The increase of immigration brought many new unfamiliar
races and cultures onto British soil. The turn of the century saw a sometime violent reaction to the
foreigners.
Back when Dracula was written it was not an immediate bestseller when it was published even
though reviewers were generous with their praises of it. One review even said, "Dracula is cleverly
constructed, skillfully and strongly told, and has a strong hold upon the imagination, and will hold
its own with the few really powerful stories of its kind..." (Mercury) It did make much money for

choices we face on a day–to–day basis range from getting out of bed and starting our day, to
investing our hard earned money into buying a new car or house. We make so many choices in just
one day and most of the time we don't even ponder the decisions we end up making. Recently, in the
past year, after being involved in an automobile accident I was faced with, what seemed to be a very

parents off my back about finding a job and it also got me out of the house for a couple hours a day.
At the time I was okay with going back into retail sales but I wasn't planning on it being longer term

Upon moving home I left all my friends and at that time many of my friends from growing up no

Moving back to Cleveland was one of the best decisions I made because it has brought me to this

wanting to become a nurse is something I've grown very fond of and in moving home I've
accomplished part of that goal. I have everything I need and all the support to be successful in

Literature of Psychology in Dracula by Bram Stoker
In the story "Dracula", composed by Bram Stoker, the literature of psychology is well presented.
"Dracula" was composed in 1897, the time in which psychology was first being introduced. The
novel "Dracula" was written into an epistolary formation known as a series of letters, newspaper
clippings, and diary entries. Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to Transylvania to presume a
real estate transaction with the Count Dracula. Amongst his arrival he suspects peculiar activities
occurring. Bram Stoker's "Dracula" symbolizes the functions of the human mind and how paranoia
affects characters, which marks the beginning of the psychological era.

Harker tends to become preoccupied with the fact that something strange is going on, as his
personality remains the same, the thoughts he is deliberating will soon impact him. As the nervous
state of psychology is repressed, Harker soon feels entrapment as he states, "The Castle is a
veritable prison, and I am a prisoner" (Stoker 172).
When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout
the story. Upon figuring out that he is now a prisoner at the Counts mansion, his behaviors have
been affected dramatically, "I rushed up and down the stairs, trying every door and peering out every
window I could find; but after a little the conviction of my helplessness overpowered all other
feelings" (Stoker 172–173). The act of determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical
events going on around them. Harker's behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish events
occurring before him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an
idea, it is demonstrated when his paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his
behaviors as he feels like an entrapped prisoner.
The idea of suicide is shown throughout the end of chapter IV, as Harker try's to escape reality by
jumping out the window. Harker's conscious mind can no longer deal with all the mayhem going on
around him as he states, "At least God's mercy is better than that of

Political Criticism Of Dracula
The interpretation of Stoker's vampire novel can be made from a political perspective. Stoker' novel
is in respond to the political threat represented by the monster dracula. Stoker paints the character of
dracula to bring out the features of a colonizer who is yearning to spread his power and authority
beyond his home territory (England) with the objective of controlling other domains. Certainly, it
could be said that his his control of his own castle is waning fast. It is for this reason It should be
understood that colonization and the associated threats were the order of the day even in to the close
of the 19th centuary. To prove his power and control, the count controls all the places he inhabits or

Though not shown in a straightforward way, the interconnectedness of these themes can be traced to
illustrate how the theme of rebellion is developed. This novel was published during an era when
women were suppressed and the community was struggling with other social problems like
homosexuality. Interestingly, Britain was at a phase when vigorous social changes were at their
peak. In the light of these vigorous changes, homosexuals could not help but express their sexual
frustration. In his novel, Stoker's presentation of the "new woman", who is sexually active, powerful
and dominating, mocks the female suppression in that era. This indicates rebellion. Conclusively, the
homosexual symbolism presented in the novel could be considered as a way for Stoker to relieve the
guilt of his inability to help a dear friend, Oscar Wilde. Many hidden incidents of rebellion were
presented in this novel. It is with the help of a critical mindset that one may discern many instances

A Common Concern Throughout The Victorian Era
A common concern throughout the Victorian era was the role women maintained and their position
in society. It was expected that both males and females conformed to these roles and followed the
gender expectations of their society. Bram Stoker 's Dracula describes a post dated European setting
in which most women are subject to explicit gender roles and stereotypes. The norm in this society
is for women to be modest, prim and proper. However, the novel narrates the possibilities of a
situation in which women don 't conform and thus are scrutinized. Bram Stoker 's purpose in
Dracula is to express the threat faced by men when encountering women who are in control of their

When the men are reflecting on the woman Lucy used to be, Jack Seward comments that "[they]
recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed. The sweetness was
turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness" (Stoker, 195).
Seward uses very different extreme words to contrast Lucy 's character before and after her
transition. The words "sweetness" and "purity" are associated with the once pure, modest Lucy and
the terms "adamantine, heartless cruelty" and "voluptuous wantonness" are associated with the new,
profoundly sexual Lucy. Seward 's descriptions of Lucy indicate that the men are concerned because
she too was sexually expressive and that poses a threat to the patriarchal beliefs and values that were
set in stone in this era. The author also uses repetition of Lucy 's name, "Lucy Westenra"
emphasizing that while the name is still the same, everything else about her is completely different.
It is evident that Seward, along with other men are more inclined to perceive modest women more
positively than women who are not. As a result of adversely characterized women, Stoker is able to
use juxtaposition to convey how men feel about women and their sexualities. Bram Stoker uses this
element of form when Jonathan comes across the beautiful women in the forbidden section of the
castle. Jonathan says "I am alone in the castle

Eating Disorders and Negative Body Images
Millions of teens and adults are faced with eating disorders and negative body images everywhere
they go. Celebrities promote unrealistic standards and display what the "acceptable" body is.
Because of our stick thin role models we have in the media today much of our society holds their
own body image to the unobtainable standards of celebrities. People are bombarded with images of
what's "sexy" instead of what's healthy (Helmich). In a world based around celebrities and media,
shouldn't they be promoting a healthy body image instead of the negative ones we are being
smothered with? Cindy Crawford in a magazine interview states, "'do you look at me and want to
puke?' Evidently, they're not hearing or paying attention to a deafening 'Yes' from the seven million
American girls and women who, according to Dr. Vivian Meehan, suffer from eating disorders"
(Zimmerman). Even if you don't have an eating disorder, you are still affected by the media and
supermodels. Saying to yourself "If I had those shoes I'd look as stunning as her", models are used
to sell products but instead sell their bodies and the products are just vamping that up. Models leave
millions of young impressionable people, striving for an unachievable perfection. Dr. Morris
Fishbein says, "Of all of the fads which have afflicted mankind, none seems more difficult to
explain than the desire of American women striving for the barber pole figure." (Zimmerman). Why

Diversity Reflection
The implications and understandings developed in class were a gateway in applying it to real world
work. Being given the opportunity to volunteer at The Continuum, I was able to understand the
meaning of disability in the lives of others. I saw firsthand how access, knowledge, and care can
transform a person's daily life in all aspects. With educative modules on assistive technology, culture
and care, family issues, and many others, I was able to transform my perspective and practice what I
am currently learning in the classroom. The Continuum provides a ReGenerations Adult Day Club
for "individuals who may deal with Alzheimer's disease, Dementia, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Stroke
Recovery, Parkinson's disease, and M.S.". This program is fundamental in providing an array of
different care, and I found it to be beneficial for more than just their members. Through my 15 hours
of volunteer experience with The Continuum, I analyzed how a person's disability can be managed
and addressed using a variety of techniques and methods, in caring for individuals.
My first day volunteering had me nervous, but with an excited anticipation of being able to help
others, while learning. I immediately assessed the location for how they incorporated accessibility in
their framework, in regard to, the layout, doors, and general environment. It is interesting how once
you are aware of something, it easily becomes incorporated in simple daily life. I was given a brief

Impact Of The Victorian Period
The Victorian Period, many books take place in this period. These books can vary from romance to
fantasy. The Victorian Period is the time when Queen Victoria reigned. Queen Victoria's reign lasted
for 60 years. There were many impacts during this period. Despite the fact that she was crowned
Queen at the age of 18, her reign had a period of changes with the society, the economy, and the
technology. As a result of all of this change, the percentage in agricultural areas went down. While,
the percentage in rural areas went up. Then, The Great Famine started in Ireland. Two million died,
while others went into exile or left the country. Afterward, Queen Victoria wanted to restore the
reputation of the monarchy. Furthermore, there were many other events made an impact on the
Victorian Period. Such as, communism, socialism, capitalism, educational rights, and different
changes in both men and woman. Wilkie Collins originally wrote "The Woman in White". Whereas
we read the one written by students from Oxford. The Victorian Period has an impact on this novel.
As an example, Marian Halcombe, which in the story she is Laura's half – sister. She acts very
independent and sharp tongued. Moreover, she is a rebellious woman. In the Victorian Period they

Female Characters Of The Novel ' Dracula '
Throughout the Victorian period in which Dracula was written, there was great concern over the
roles of women, and the place they held in society. The two central female characters in Dracula are
Mina Murray, later Mina Harker, and Lucy Westenra, though arguably Dracula's three daughters also
hold a strong place in terms of female characters in the novel also.
One of the main depictions of women in the novel is that are either both sexually promiscuous and
overtly sexual, or they are pure and chaste. In Victorian society, you were either a virgin or a
married woman, if women were neither then they were not of much moral worth to society. Much
like this Victorian ideal, the overtly promiscuous and sexual females of Dracula are depicted as evil
and monstrous, while the pure and chaste women are displayed as strong and heroic.
The character of Mina Murray, whom starts the novel as a young school headmistress that is
engaged to one of the novel's narrators, Jonathan Harker. Throughout the novel, Mina is depicted as
the ideal Victorian woman. Take what Dr. Van Helsing says of Mina in chapter fourteen,
She is one of God 's women, fashioned by His own hand to show us men and other women that there
is a heaven where we can enter, and that its light can be here on earth. So true, so sweet, so noble, so
little an egoist... (Stoker 2002: 198)

God intends women to be. He associates Mina

The Thin Blue Line
The Thin Blue Line does not conform to the standards of documentary film of its era. Instead, Errol
Morris borrows from other cinematic traditions to create a film that is both informative and
enjoyable. He utilizes camera and sound devices, not unlike those of a dramatic film, to weave the
facts into a compelling narrative. Through The Thin Blue Line, Errol Morris proves the potential
emotional impact that can be conjured when facts are presented using fiction. Errol Morris puts the
viewer on–edge from the beginning of the film. The murder scene includes dramatic non–diegetic
soundtrack that raises the intensity of the scene as the police officer makes his way to the car. The

Reflexive documentaries do not aim to hide their objectivity and instead encourage viewers to
embrace "documentary for what it is: a construct or representation" (Resha 2). Morris's highly
constructed shots and reenactments do not try to give the viewer a false reality but instead are used
to progress the narrative. The reenactment sequence is the most groundbreaking characteristic of the
film. The stylized shots of a milkshake flying through the air, the officer falling to the ground, and
the car speeding away bring drama and excitement to the film in a way a simple retelling never
could. The reenactments replay multiple times, highlighting the atypical path along which Morris is
retelling the murder's narrative. By familiarizing the audience with the murder scene, Morris makes
the viewer feel like they are also involved in the case. This feeling of involvement in the movie
continues through the point–of–view shots integrated into the reenactments. We feel like the cop,
with our hands on the wheel and like the accused, facing down the barrel of a gun or sitting at the
drive in movie. This technique for conjuring empathy is just one of the aspects of the film that bring

In The Victorian Era, Society’S Views Of Men And Women
In the Victorian Era, society's views of men and women and their roles in the world were beginning
to dramatically change, and not all were content with these changes. The novel Dracula, by Bram
Stoker, represents the mindset that those who felt threatened by these changes had. Mina and the
men of the vampire slaying group act in the traditional manner associated with their gender and
represent the ideal way Stoker believed the sexes should behave meanwhile, Dracula and the female
vampires are used to signify, and portray in a threatening light, those who didn't conform to his
society's standards for men and women. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, Stoker sets up traditional gender

This clearly demonstrates Stoker's opinion about the traits of women and what they were meant to
do in society. In addition to this, just as Mina is portrayed as the ideal women and embodies the
traditionally feminine associated traits, the weird sisters are shown to be monstrous, possessing none
of these traditional characteristics and represent an exaggerated, and evil, version of the "New
Woman".
The weird sisters, or the three female vampires who live with Dracula in his castle, are a
representation of the perceived threat from the changing of women's role in society and their
increased independence. The weird sisters are portrayed as the exact opposite of the caregiver and
are ruthless with absolutely no maternal feelings. The weird sisters kidnap and kill children and in
addition try to seduce and then murder men, seen when Jonathan describes his first encounter with
them writing in his diary as them saying the following, "Are we to have nothing tonight?" said one
of them, with a low laugh, as she pointed to the bag which he had thrown upon the floor, and which
moved as though some living thing within it. For answer he nodded his head...If my ears did not
deceive me there was a gasp and a low wail, as of a half–smothered child" (Stoker 156). This scene
is used to establish the ruthless and horrific nature of the female vampires. Regarding this encounter

Productive Fear In Bram Stoker's Dracula
Dracula: Productive Fear
The 'anxieties of empire' depicted within Bram Stoker's Dracula have gathered immense criticism
and attention from enthusiasts and scholars. The publication of Stoker's novel in 1897 was in a
period experiencing heightened nationalism together with imperial decadence. Friedrich Kittler
claims that Jonathan Harker, the English solicitor visiting Count Dracula, was an imperial spy
(Kittler, 60). Patrick Brantlinger fruitfully identifies the novel as 'a piece of imperial Gothicism'.
This is attributed to the identification of several main themes including individual regression
influenced by increased nativity together with barbarism and demonism (230). Steven Arata

As previously recalled, Morris and Seward were Lucy's suitors and Van Helsing joked about being
Lucy's husband as she received blood from him during a transfusion (Stoker, 158). In the first scene
pertaining to seduction, Harker seeks to recognize the temptress face as her fairness is likened to
Lucy's. This may be projected as the male repression of their desire as they seek to identify that it is
not they who want the temptress, but rather the temptress who has a liking towards them. The guilt
accompanied with illicit desire is turned into aggression leading to the death of Lucy, who is
identified as the 'dark temptress'. This seeks to identify that the 'calling' in the Crew of Light is not
influenced by a mysterious inner voice, but rather through the identification of external divine signs.
Van Helsing articulates this upon completion of the deed as follows:
Now, my friends, one step of our work is done, one the most harrowing to ourselves. But there
remains a greater task: to find out the author of all this our sorrow and to stamp him out. I have clues
which we can follow; but it is a long task, and a difficult [one], and there is danger in it, and pain.
Shall you not all help me? We have learned to believe, all of us–is it not so? And since so, do we not
see our duty? Yes! And do we not promise to go on to the bitter end?" Each in turn, [they] took his

Snow Pines : A Critique Of Helen Frankenthaler Snow Pines
I chose to critique Helen Frankenthaler Snow Pines at in the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art from 2004

Description
Acclaimed artist Helen Frankenthaler created a work of art that was influenced by abstract
expressionism. His, Snow Pines (2004), predominately utilizes woodblock printing technique . This
artwork is considered a Woodblock prints––a block of wood on whose surface a design for printing
is engraved along the grain. Frankenthaler doesn't utilizes any form of shapes in her artwork
however, she does uses pigments mixed with water that are then lightly brushed onto a piece of
wood. While observing this up close (seen in the smaller picture), you notice scratches of wood lines
in the background of the artwork. This was achieved by the technique of woodcutting–– make a
woodcut without a press by placing the inked block against a sheet of paper and applying pressure
by hand. These lines help illustrates the wood texture of the artwork. From glimpsing for the first
time, I noticed the translucence of the color illustrating the light, vibrant tone .The colors used in
Frankenthaler's art are mostly comprised of warm colors––yellow, red, orange and pink–– and cool
colors: green and blue. The artwork flows from warm colors to cool colors. The color scheme is
analogous as the piece include variations in color between hues adjacent to one another on the color

The Sexualization Of Female Characters In Dracula By Bram...
Dracula is a novel written by Bram Stoker during the late 1800's. The book starts out with Jonathan
Harker, who is a smart young business man, who wants to travel to Count Dracula for a business
ordeal. Many locals from the European area warned Jonathan about Count Dracula, and would offer
him crosses and other trinkets to help fend against him. Mina, who is at the time Jonathans soon to
be wife, visits to catch up with an old friend named Lucy Westenra. Lucy gives Mina an update on
her love life telling her how she's been proposed to by three different men. The men are introduced
as Dr. Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris. Unfortunately for her she will need to reject
two of the men, and Lucy ends up choosing to marry Holmwood. Later on after Mina visits Lucy,
Lucy starts to sleep walk, becomes sick, and then finds out she has bite marks on her throat. Due to
this incident, another new character is introduced who happens to be Van Helsing. As the novel
progresses, lady vampires are introduced and Lucy is eventually turned into one of the lady
vampires as well. With the introduction of female vampires, the novel Dracula turns into a sexual
and sensational novel by Bram Stoker. The female characters in the book are overly sexualized to

In Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dracula is representative of the superhuman ideal that man is striving to

characteristics, he appeals to the contemporary reader. By the late 20th and early 21st century,
vampires have been transformed into creatures that offer endless happiness and immortality on
earth. Such a transformation can be seen in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 production of Bram
Stoker's Dracula. Instead of viewing the Faustian dream of endless self–gratification and fulfillment
as potentially evil, popular culture depicts these satanic creatures as morally justified, and actually

For Steward, Arthur, and Quincey, Mina allows them to unburden themselves, with regards to Lucy,
upon her. Their gratefulness for Mina turns into genuine love for Mina, with her "man's brain ... and

a "pet lunatic" to a man with "courtesy and respect" (206). In turn, for her kindness, Renfield
attempts to save Mina from Dracula, sacrificing himself. The men's unconditional love for Mina
heightens when Dracula forces Mina to drink his blood, like a "child forcing a kitten's nose into a

sacrificing themselves selflessly. Coppola's adaptation of Stoker's Dracula presents an unconditional

handsome man who first insults Mina then intrigues her. Unlike Stoker's, where he refrains from
being a Count, he admits to Mina that he is a prince. Mina and Dracula's love is renewed as she

Review Of ' Dracula ' By Bram Stoker
History Repeats Itself Dracula is a gothic horror novel written by Bram Stoker in the year 1897. The
novel is set primarily in England and Transylvania in the late 1890s. The novel follows the story of
Dracula, an extremely powerful vampire, and his conflict with a small group of men and women led
by Dr. Seward and Van Helsing. Dr. Seward and Van Helsing emerge as leaders of the group early
on in the novel, allowing readers to observe the similarities and differences between the two doctors.
In Dracula, Bram Stoker successfully uses Van Helsing and Dr. Seward as tools to contrast the
effectiveness of the different approaches taken to deal with Dracula, and also to explore the
consequences of modernity within Victorian society.
When discussing Van Helsing and Dr. Seward as plot characters, many homogenous traits are
observed. These two doctors parallel each other in many respects. One of the personality traits both
these doctors exhibit is their extreme level of skill and intelligence in their practice. Van Helsing is a
Dutch professor that is well versed in just about every subject. Van Helsing is a medical genius, and
even holds a degree in law. His former student Dr. Seward is arguably as intelligent as Van Helsing
himself. His intelligence is merely limited to things of practical, rational nature. Van Helsing
describes a time where Dr. Seward saved his life with his quick thinking and decisive action. "Tell

A Good Or Evil?
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Throughout history,
humans have seen the constant struggle between good and evil. The choices people make assist in
defining their character as "good or evil." How individuals react to certain situations and who they
turn to for help also define their true character. For example, around the world society labels
individuals because who or what they praise. Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity is each
judged by the society. In Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," the reader can see the distinct difference in
good and evil. The characters in "Dracula" build their personality or reputation by the actions they
accomplish. Bram Stoker assist the reader in categorizing each character as good or evil. The first
character that represents the ideal woman is Mina Murray that is later Mina Harker. During the
Victorian Era, women were supposed to be pure and the perfect example of the typical wife. Mina
was a perfect representation of the Victorian women. She was very supportive to her loved ones.
Mina went out of her way to provide the safety and are for her husband, Jonathan. "I am getting
quite uneasy about him, though why I should I do not know; but I do wish that he would write, if it

Tennessee Williams uses 'A Streetcar Named Desire' to relate to his own personal life, echoes of his
own life are present in the plot and sub–plot of the play. The play is set during the era in which it

Also because this play is meant to be as real to life as possible within the confines of the story
means that everyone who goes to watch the play will be able to relate to the characters depicted in
some way or other. This would attract the audience because they would have something in common

Stella moves away to get on with her life and Blanche stays at home, she also becomes mentally
unstable but this does not become apparent until the end of the play, and like Rose is committed to a

suffered when he learnt about his sister's mental state and that she had been committed.
In 'A Streetcar Named Desire' the character Stanley has characteristics similar to those of Williams's
father. He had disapproved of Williams' sexuality and femininity and was openly ashamed. Williams
resented his father for this for the rest of his life. This is why Williams portrays Stanley as the
stereotypical 'mans man', a macho dominating figure. Williams' resentment for his father is apparent
in the play in two forms, the first is the relationship between Blanche and her ex–husband who she
finds in bed with another man, this is Williams' way of getting back at his father by putting such a
controversial idea in the play, an idea that his father could not find acceptable. The second is the
way that Stanley has the same ideals as Williams's father and to live as the

would get up in the night and dress himself", even if Lucy's father is alive it is clear that he has had
minimal involvement and impact on Lucy's life. Stoker could be suggesting that Lucy's lack of a
patriarch has meant that she has a desire and craving for one leading her to finding one where ever
she could find it. When Dracula is removing blood from Lucy she is described as "half–reclining"
Stokers use of this word suggests that Dracula is not forcing her or even restraining her, it implies
that she is accepting what is taking place. Stoker goes as far as to imply that Lucy is enjoy the
experience, "Her lips were parted... heavy gasps", this is very sexually suggestive of a post climatic
moment. It could be argued that at this moment she is conforming to the hierarchy of society by
being submissive due to her possible positive "father complex" (created by Sigmund Feud and Carl
Jung), so is therefore acting how a Victorian should by

How Does Renfield Affect The Character Of Dracula

  • 1. How Does Renfield Affect The Character Of Dracula In Alice's Adventures In Wonderland And Through The Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll wrote,"I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir,' said Alice, 'Because I'm not myself you see." Renfield, in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, is a character who is not himself for the most part of the book. He affects the reader's perception of character, the plot, and the story's mood by enhancing the gothic elements and horror of the novel through his insane tendencies, his allowance of Dracula to get to Mina, and the overall grotesque way in which his body is described. Stoker included Renfield to compare Dracula with a human with the same tendencies. His mental illness is defined by Dr. Seward, "My homicidal maniac is of a peculiar kind...a zoophagous (life–eating) maniac. What he desires is to absorb as many lives as he can..."(Stoker 74). This is a contrast to dracula who oly wants to survive by drinking the blood of his prey, not killing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Renfield allows Dracula in in this scene, "...I found myself opening the sash and saying to Him, 'Come in, Lord and Master!' The rats were all gone, but He slid into the room through the sash..." (Stoker 296). Renfield lets Dracula into the house, giving him free reign over his travel. Without Renfield, Dracula would not have been able to get into the asylum, staying away from Lucy. Stoker uses Renfield as an example of human indulgence, even though it is not right, the temptation is overpowering. Renfield helps to advance the plot by fulfilling Dracula's plans as well, "There was a fearful scream which almost froze our hearts to hear. As he had placed the Wafer on Mina's forehead, it had seared it...had burned into the flesh as though it had been a piece of white–hot metal."(Stoker 313). He lets Mina be turned vampiristic and she ends up having her soul tainted. Without Renfield, the group would not have gone after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Lucian Freud Essay Lucian Freud Freud, Lucian (1922– ). German–born British painter. He was born in Berlin, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, came to England with his parents in 1931, and acquired British nationality in 1939. His earliest love was drawing, and he began to work full time as an artist after being invalided out of the Merchant Navy in 1942. In 1951 his Interior at Paddington (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) won a prize at the Festival of Britain, and since then he has built up a formidable reputation as one of the most powerful contemporary figurative painters. Portraits and nudes are his specialities, often observed in arresting close–up. His early work was meticulously painted, so he has sometimes been described as a `Realist' (or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freud's subjects are often the people in his life; friends, family, fellow painters, lovers, children. As he has said 'The subject matter is autobiographical, it's all to do with hope and memory and sensuality and involvement really'. Paintings in the exhibition will range from Girl with Roses 1948 to Garden, Notting Hill Gate 1997, and highlights include the marvellous series of portraits of his mother, portraits of fellow painters John Minton, Michael Andrews and Frank Auerbach, and other major works including Large Interior W11 (after Watteau) 1981–3. Sharp pictures of his youth will contrast with the works of his maturity, paintings filled with life and liveliness, each in its way a celebration. 'I paint people', Freud has said, 'not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they happen to be'. Until the mid 1950's, Freud worked in a tightly focused style, which he had begun to use at the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting, run by Cedric Morris. The school was very informal; as Freud said, there was 'No teaching much but there were models and you could work in your own room'. In many ways he worked by trial and error: Landscape with Birds (no. 3, shown in room 1) was an experiment with the kind of enamel paint he thought was used by Picasso. As he said later, 'Learning to paint is literally learning to use paint.' Around 1956 Freud exchanged his finely pointed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Comparing Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the 1972 Film... Bram Stoker's Dracula is not only a classic story of men and monsters, but a dramatic reactionary work to the perceived threats to Victorian society in nineteenth century England. In modern times there have been many film adaptations of the novel, each developing a unique analysis or criticism of the literary text within the framework of the society and time period in which it was created. The 1972 film Blacula is one of the most culturally specific variations on the story of Dracula, and highlights many of the themes and messages found in Stoker's original text. Among the primary similarities between the novel and the film is the portrayal of race, sexuality, nationality, and culture, and the characterization in each work speaks to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dracula is of mixed racial heritage and blood "in the whirlpool of European races," a concept which would have been fearful to the novel's white, upper–class English audience. This widespread xenophobia, a fear and hatred of foreigners, was a reaction by Victorian England to the perceived threat of outsiders to white genetic purity. Dracula's real threat is not in the physical destruction of Western Europe, but in the assimilation, reproduction, and infestation caused by the literal and figurative mixing of his barbarian animal blood with that of the "superior" English race. The concept of eugenics, the "qualitative and quantitative improvement of the human genome" (Galton 99), gained widespread popularity during Stoker's lifetime and became a prevalent theme in the works of many authors aiming to make a social commentary or criticism on the invasion of England by foreign peoples. Adolph Hitler would later adopt eugenic ideals in the intended creation of a "master race," one which victimized many of the same groups and relied upon almost identical anti–Semitic imagery as the earlier Victorian proponents (Hauner 15). Race is a key element in the movie Blacula, in which the film's eponymous villain is an ancient African prince cursed by Count Dracula to walk the earth for eternity in search of human blood. • 7. Female Sexuality The female sexuality plays the very important role in both DRACULA and MAXIMUM GAGA. They both talk about the virginity and dissoluteness in female sexuality, but have different views about it. In DRACULA, only virginity is accepted; dissoluteness is completely intolerable. Stoker thinks virginity is very precious, and he want the readers know that women will be punished for being lascivious, so each female character has different ending in terms of their virginity. In MAXIMUM GAGA, Lara didn't give an exact attitude about the virginity and dissoluteness in female sexuality; she thinks they can exist at the same time. In DRACULA, the general content is about the fighting between Dracula and humans, since Dracula tries to transform all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men don't appreciate women being dissipated. They wanted to kill her to make her back to normal. Also, Lucy has the worse ending which all the guys she loved and loved her before want to kill her and Van Helsing cut off her head and filled her mouth with garlic. All of these occurred because she was not very pure and loyal when she is a human; she needs to pay for her dissoluteness. The three sisters had already been transformed to be vampires by Dracula, and Stoker makes them as the most sexual ones. In Jonathan's journal, "The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive. (Stoker, 43)" Their ends are very miserable. They were all killed by Van Helsing. Like Lucy, they also need to pay for their dissoluteness, which supports Stoker's view about the preciousness of virginity. In MAXIMUM GAGA, Lara also put a lot of weight on female sexuality, virginity and dissoluteness to be specifically. Basically, the book is all about sexuality, there are sex between human and machines, orifice and all the crazy staffs. The big argument in the book is the relationship between virginity and dissoluteness in female sexuality. It's kind of complex that women have both virginity and dissoluteness at the same time. It looks like female is very dissipated here; however, they still have an idea about virginity. We see the dissoluteness at the most parts in the book. All the descriptions ... • 9. A Comparison Of Dracula And Dracula Dracula is the infamous vampire that readers were first introduced to by Irish author Bram Stoker in 1897 when they read his novel Dracula (Stoker). The author conveys the story of Count Dracula, a mysterious being that is half man, half vampire that sucks blood from the neck of his victims to stay alive (Stoker). This novel is an outstanding masterpiece of work, which is why it has been a prototype for various movie releases over the decades, such as Nosferatu, Horror of Dracula, Dracula A Love Story, and Bram Stoker's Dracula ("Dracula (Universal Classics)"). When a novel is a basis for a movie the hope is that the characters coincide from one to the other, which leads to the exploration of the resemblances and modifications of the ... While these traits are consistent in both the novel and the movie there are differences (Stoker). Starting with the novel, it describes Count Dracula's shadow coordinates with his body, yet in the movie, his shadow works separately from his body movements ("Dracula (Universal Classics)"). The next modification of Count Dracula's character in the novel is, he cannot be in or near the sunlight or it will kill him, however, in the movie, he meets Mina in the daytime and it does not harm him (Bram Stoker's). Then, in the novel, Dracula is a purely evil, terrifying blood hungry monster that wreaks havoc on anyone he meets and feels the need to take life or end life with his arch nemesis being with anyone who wants to preserve life (Stoker). But in the movie when he meets Mina on the streets of London, he pursues a courtship with her and he begins to develop feelings for Mina (Bram Stoker's). When he proclaims his love for her and refuses to condemn her to the life of a vampire, he is no longer a vile, evil monster (Bram Stoker's). These modifications to Count Dracula's character in the movie make the audience see him as a vulnerable, loving man with feelings for a woman who reminds him of his dead wife Elisabeta (Bram ... It also shows that Rose did not go in as told but remained there with them and Troy accepted that he could not tell her what to do. The image or action of Rose not leaving shows the changing of the times in other words the 1950s on the fence to between the old ways and the new ones. In the first part of what Bono says describes Troy with death and the other part describes Rose with her love for her family and desire to keep everyone close and happy. The character Gabriel (Uncle Gabe) is a mix of many different things and people that of the time and believes he signals the opening of heaven's gate as his interpretation of the fence. Gabriel is Troy's half brother who went and fought in the war. He was medically discharged after receiving a head injury that permanently reduced his mental functions. Troy helped Gabriel get a settlement and helps spend/manage the money. Troy used the money to buy himself a house that Gabriel originally lived in as well until Gabriel moved out at his own wish. • 13. Why is Dracula such a great horror story? Essay Why is Dracula such a great horror story? In my opinion 'Dracula' is a great horror story because it is highly entertaining in its idea of vampirism, its atmospheric descriptions, powerful characterisation and the horrific death of Lucy. The novel is also interesting because of the religious perspectives, such as the use of garlic, holy water and the crucifix as weapons against evil. Jonathan Harker's journey to Count Dracula's home is described in great detail. The atmosphere not only adds to the dangerous ride to Dracula's Castle, but also comes alive as we're reading it. The atmosphere surrounding Harker is incredibly frightening but the detail and descriptions used are so astounding that we can feel the 'strange chills'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 'paralysis of fear' tells us that Harker is clearly too scared to move a muscle. The detail is very interesting. Each word kept me entertained, as I'm sure it does every reader. Harker arrives at Count Dracula's Castle. This part of the story is fascinating; Harkers first encounter with Dracula is also 'strange'. Dracula is described as half–man and half–animal. This is very peculiar. He is a 'tall, old man,' who is 'clad in black head to toe.' I would definitely not be happy, if I were to meet him. Dracula has 'hair in palms' and also 'massive eyebrows.' Harker also says Dracula's 'breath was rank.' This image is certainly odd and Dracula is not very attractive! This description of Dracula is frightening for harker mostly, but great for the reader. Stoker's use of language is totally luminous. These animalistic features of Dracula are eerie not only to Harker but also to the readers. Dracula's domestic attentions towards harker are eccentric. The Count does everything himself. He takes Harker's 'luggage' and 'opened the door.' You would wonder why there aren't any 'servants' in a huge castle. Harker realises this oddity, so he 'looked for a bell' but couldn't find one. This adds another mysterious aspect towards Dracula and should interest the readers. The reader reads on,

It is a Gothic horror novel and was published May 26, 1897. 1897 was the height of the British Empire expansion. Great Britain had expanded to much of the land of Africa, Asia, and North America, which they used to fuel its tremendous military and economic power. But this high point was also the start of the declined to the British power. America's and Germany's rise in powers threated to remove Great Britain as the most powerful country. The increase of immigration brought many new unfamiliar races and cultures onto British soil. The turn of the century saw a sometime violent reaction to the foreigners. Back when Dracula was written it was not an immediate bestseller when it was published even though reviewers were generous with their praises of it. One review even said, "Dracula is cleverly constructed, skillfully and strongly told, and has a strong hold upon the imagination, and will hold its own with the few really powerful stories of its kind..." • 26. Literature of Psychology in Dracula by Bram Stoker In the story "Dracula", composed by Bram Stoker, the literature of psychology is well presented. "Dracula" was composed in 1897, the time in which psychology was first being introduced. The novel "Dracula" was written into an epistolary formation known as a series of letters, newspaper clippings, and diary entries. Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to Transylvania to presume a real estate transaction with the Count Dracula. Amongst his arrival he suspects peculiar activities occurring. Harker tends to become preoccupied with the fact that something strange is going on, as his personality remains the same, the thoughts he is deliberating will soon impact him. As the nervous state of psychology is repressed, Harker soon feels entrapment as he states, "The Castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner" (Stoker 172). When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout the story. Upon figuring out that he is now a prisoner at the Counts mansion, his behaviors have been affected dramatically, "I rushed up and down the stairs, trying every door and peering out every window I could find; but after a little the conviction of my helplessness overpowered all other feelings" (Stoker 172–173). The act of determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical events going on around them. Harker's behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish events occurring before him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an idea, it is demonstrated when his paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his behaviors as he feels like an entrapped prisoner. The idea of suicide is shown throughout the end of chapter IV, as Harker try's to escape reality by jumping out the window. The figure stopped, and at the moment a ray of moonlight fell upon the masses of driving clouds, and showed in startling prominence a dark–haired woman, dressed in the cerements of the grave. We could not see the face, for it was bent down over what we saw to be a fair–haired child. In his novel, Stoker's presentation of the "new woman", who is sexually active, powerful and dominating, mocks the female suppression in that era. This indicates rebellion. Conclusively, the homosexual symbolism presented in the novel could be considered as a way for Stoker to relieve the guilt of his inability to help a dear friend, Oscar Wilde. It was expected that both males and females conformed to these roles and followed the gender expectations of their society. Bram Stoker 's Dracula describes a post dated European setting in which most women are subject to explicit gender roles and stereotypes. The norm in this society is for women to be modest, prim and proper. However, the novel narrates the possibilities of a situation in which women don 't conform and thus are scrutinized. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed. The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness" (Stoker, 195). Seward uses very different extreme words to contrast Lucy 's character before and after her transition. The words "sweetness" and "purity" are associated with the once pure, modest Lucy and the terms "adamantine, heartless cruelty" and "voluptuous wantonness" are associated with the new, profoundly sexual Lucy. Seward 's descriptions of Lucy indicate that the men are concerned because she too was sexually expressive and that poses a threat to the patriarchal beliefs and values that were set in stone in this era. The author also uses repetition of Lucy 's name, "Lucy Westenra" emphasizing that while the name is still the same, everything else about her is completely different. It is evident that Seward, along with other men are more inclined to perceive modest women more positively than women who are not. As a result of adversely characterized women, Stoker is able to use juxtaposition to convey how men feel about women and their sexualities. • 42. Female Characters Of The Novel ' Dracula ' Throughout the Victorian period in which Dracula was written, there was great concern over the roles of women, and the place they held in society. The two central female characters in Dracula are Mina Murray, later Mina Harker, and Lucy Westenra, though arguably Dracula's three daughters also hold a strong place in terms of female characters in the novel also. One of the main depictions of women in the novel is that are either both sexually promiscuous and overtly sexual, or they are pure and chaste. In Victorian society, you were either a virgin or a married woman, if women were neither then they were not of much moral worth to society. • 50. Productive Fear In Bram Stoker's Dracula Dracula: Productive Fear The 'anxieties of empire' depicted within Bram Stoker's Dracula have gathered immense criticism and attention from enthusiasts and scholars. The publication of Stoker's novel in 1897 was in a period experiencing heightened nationalism together with imperial decadence. Friedrich Kittler claims that Jonathan Harker, the English solicitor visiting Count Dracula, was an imperial spy (Kittler, 60). Patrick Brantlinger fruitfully identifies the novel as 'a piece of imperial Gothicism'. This is attributed to the identification of several main themes including individual regression influenced by increased nativity together with barbarism and demonism (230). Steven Arata describes Dracula's invasion of London as an incident ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As previously recalled, Morris and Seward were Lucy's suitors and Van Helsing joked about being Lucy's husband as she received blood from him during a transfusion (Stoker, 158). In the first scene pertaining to seduction, Harker seeks to recognize the temptress face as her fairness is likened to Lucy's. This may be projected as the male repression of their desire as they seek to identify that it is not they who want the temptress, but rather the temptress who has a liking towards them. The guilt accompanied with illicit desire is turned into aggression leading to the death of Lucy, who is identified as the 'dark temptress'. This seeks to identify that the 'calling' in the Crew of Light is not influenced by a mysterious inner voice, but rather through the identification of external divine signs. Van Helsing articulates this upon completion of the deed as follows: Now, my friends, one step of our work is done, one the most harrowing to ourselves. But there remains a greater task: to find out the author of all this our sorrow and to stamp him out. I have clues which we can follow; but it is a long task, and a difficult [one], and there is danger in it, and pain. Shall you not all help me? We have learned to believe, all of us–is it not so? And since so, do we not see our duty? Yes! And do we not promise to go on to the bitter end?" Each in turn, [they] took his hand, and the promise was made. (Stoker, ... Snow Pines : A Critique Of Helen Frankenthaler Snow Pines I chose to critique Helen Frankenthaler Snow Pines at in the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art from 2004 in Garland Hall at the University of Alabama. Description Acclaimed artist Helen Frankenthaler created a work of art that was influenced by abstract expressionism. His, Snow Pines (2004), predominately utilizes woodblock printing technique . This artwork is considered a Woodblock prints––a block of wood on whose surface a design for printing is engraved along the grain. Frankenthaler doesn't utilizes any form of shapes in her artwork however, she does uses pigments mixed with water that are then lightly brushed onto a piece of wood. While observing this up close (seen in the smaller picture), you notice scratches of wood lines in the background of the artwork. This was achieved by the technique of woodcutting–– make a woodcut without a press by placing the inked block against a sheet of paper and applying pressure by hand. These lines help illustrates the wood texture of the artwork. From glimpsing for the first time, I noticed the translucence of the color illustrating the light, vibrant tone .The colors used in Frankenthaler's art are mostly comprised of warm colors––yellow, red, orange and pink–– and cool colors: green and blue. The artwork flows from warm colors to cool colors. The color scheme is analogous as the piece include variations in color between hues adjacent to one another on the color wheel, such as yellow–green, green, and blue–green. Due to this incident, another new character is introduced who happens to be Van Helsing. As the novel progresses, lady vampires are introduced and Lucy is eventually turned into one of the lady vampires as well. With the introduction of female vampires, the novel Dracula turns into a sexual and sensational novel by Bram Stoker. • 62. Dracula by Bram Stoker: Modern Man to Enduring Romance In Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dracula is representative of the superhuman ideal that man is striving to achieve. Dracula is a strong willed, powerful, brilliant masculine figure, and through these characteristics, he appeals to the contemporary reader. By the late 20th and early 21st century, vampires have been transformed into creatures that offer endless happiness and immortality on earth. Such a transformation can be seen in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 production of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Instead of viewing the Faustian dream of endless self–gratification and fulfillment as potentially evil, popular culture depicts these satanic creatures as morally justified, and actually good. Their gratefulness for Mina turns into genuine love for Mina, with her "man's brain ... and woman's heart" (207). Mina also shows kindness to Steward's patient Renfield, who transforms from a "pet lunatic" to a man with "courtesy and respect" (206). In turn, for her kindness, Renfield attempts to save Mina from Dracula, sacrificing himself. The men's unconditional love for Mina heightens when Dracula forces Mina to drink his blood, like a "child forcing a kitten's nose into a saucer of milk to compel it to drink" (247). The men truly love Mina, and attempt to protect her, sacrificing themselves selflessly. Coppola's adaptation of Stoker's Dracula presents an unconditional love between Mina and Dracula. Mina is the reincarnation of Elizabeta, suggesting a second chance for Dracula. Dracula, during the scene where he is feeding on Lucy, prevents Mina from seeing him as a monster. In a sense, it is romantic that Dracula does not want her to be frightened by him, but he remains an animal–like monster. Later, when Dracula forces Mina to see him, he is simply a foreign, handsome man who first insults Mina then intrigues her. • 64. Review Of ' Dracula ' By Bram Stoker History Repeats Itself Dracula is a gothic horror novel written by Bram Stoker in the year 1897. The novel is set primarily in England and Transylvania in the late 1890s. The novel follows the story of Dracula, an extremely powerful vampire, and his conflict with a small group of men and women led by Dr. Seward and Van Helsing. Dr. Seward and Van Helsing emerge as leaders of the group early on in the novel, allowing readers to observe the similarities and differences between the two doctors. In Dracula, Bram Stoker successfully uses Van Helsing and Dr. Seward as tools to contrast the effectiveness of the different approaches taken to deal with Dracula, and also to explore the consequences of modernity within Victorian society. When discussing Van Helsing and Dr. Seward as plot characters, many homogenous traits are observed. These two doctors parallel each other in many respects. One of the personality traits both these doctors exhibit is their extreme level of skill and intelligence in their practice. Van Helsing is a Dutch professor that is well versed in just about every subject. Van Helsing is a medical genius, and even holds a degree in law. His former student Dr. Seward is arguably as intelligent as Van Helsing himself. His intelligence is merely limited to things of practical, rational nature. Van Helsing describes a time where Dr. Seward saved his life with his quick thinking and decisive action. "Tell your friend that when that time you suck from my wound so ... In 'A Streetcar Named Desire' the character Stanley has characteristics similar to those of Williams's father. He had disapproved of Williams' sexuality and femininity and was openly ashamed. Williams resented his father for this for the rest of his life. This is why Williams portrays Stanley as the stereotypical 'mans man', a macho dominating figure. Williams' resentment for his father is apparent in the play in two forms, the first is the relationship between Blanche and her ex–husband who she finds in bed with another man, this is Williams' way of getting back at his father by putting such a controversial idea in the play, an idea that his father could not find acceptable. When the women is no longer of use, she is then discarded. The Gothic genre is described as 'formulaic" and one of the key features is a tyrannical male who abuses his power to assert his dominance over a perceived futile women. Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' was written in time where women started to want more equal rights and opportunities. For example, in the same year Dracula was published (1897), Millicent Fawcett founded 'The National Union of Women's Suffrage'. Stoker presents Lucy in a way that would be shocking and unacceptable for a Victorian reader. Stoker insinuates that Lucy is fatherless because Stoker only refers to her father once in the book and it is in the past tense, "Lucy's father, had the same habit he would get up in the night and dress himself", even if Lucy's father is alive it is clear that he has had minimal involvement and impact on Lucy's life. Stoker could be suggesting that Lucy's lack of a patriarch has meant that she has a desire and craving for one leading her to finding one where ever she could find it. When Dracula is removing blood from Lucy she is described as "half–reclining" Stokers use of this word suggests that Dracula is not forcing her or even restraining her, it implies that she is accepting what is taking place.
