4. A Little bit about the author:
 Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an
Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897
Gothic novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as
personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the
Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.
 While manager for Irving and secretary and director of London's
Lyceum Theatre, he began writing novels, beginning with The
Snake's Pass in 1890 and Dracula in 1897. During this period, Stoker
was part of the literary staff of the ‘The Daily Telegraph’ in London,
and wrote other fiction, including the horror novels The Lady of the
Shroud (1909) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911). In 1906, after
Irving's death, he published his life of Irving, which proved successful,
and managed productions at the Prince of Wales Theatre.

5. About Dracula
 The novel is told in epistolary format, as a series of letters, diary
entries, ships' log entries, and so forth. The main writers of these
items are also the novel's protagonists.

 On the work we have a lot of sexuality, eroticism,
passion.
 Harker get into a world of superstition.
 On the scene where Harker is going to Dracula’s castle
we have many gothic features.
 A trip to the dark side of the human being (entering the

 The break of values in the Victorian context. (Sexuality,
Evolution Theory, women’s role on society, etc.)
 The prison of Harker inside the Castle = Prison in a dark

7.  A common feature in vampire culture is that the
vampires feed themselves with blood and feed other
people with blood as well.
 They are creatures that can change their appearance.
 Dracula can change into a man, fog, wolf, bat.
 Bats, according to the tradition, are enemies of light.
 Harker breaks a rule established by Dracula and comes
in a forbidden room.

9.  Abraham Van Helsing appears.
 To save Lucy, was necessary to hit her on the heart with
a stake.
 Arthur Holmwood, Lucy's suitor and later fiancé, sticks the
stake into Lucy’s heart.

 Harker returns to England.
 Dracula seduces Mina and forces her to drink his blood.
 The rush to save Mina begins.

10.  Van Helsing sterilizes the caskets with the soil of
Transylvania.
 Dracula flees from England, the men and Mina follow
him.
 They are getting closer to Dracula’s castle when a fight
happens.
 Quincy Morris, an American cowboy and explorer; and
one of Lucy's suitors, stabs Dracula in the heart.
 Dracula turns into some kind dust and disappears.
 The book closes with a note about Mina's and
Jonathan's married life and the birth of their first-born
son, whom they name after all four members of the
group, but refer to only as Quincey in remembrance of
their American friend.

11.  Although the sales of the work were good, Stoker neither
made a profit nor was recognized professionally.
 His mother was the only to recognize that Dracula had
been a great work.
 She even had compared it to Frankenstein by Mary
Shelly, and Edgar Allan Poe.
