1. The department of architecture arranged a guest lecture and hands on workshop on Basic Design and
Visual Arts for the first semester students of architecture on 9th
and 10th
of October 2014. The lecture
was delivered by Dr Harimohan Pillai from Archi e Studios, Thrissur.
The topics that were covered during the two days workshop are Light, Shade, Color, Shape and Form.
On the first day, the lecture greatly focused on the experience of light source and its shadow perspective
on a built environment.
Students were split into groups of 4 students each and were given the following exercises:
1. The students were asked to cut and fold papers to display their names on a mount board using
shade and shadow technique
2. The students were asked to use the same technique with slits on papers to create a composition
or form
3. The students were asked to imprint their names using cut and fold technique on mount board
On day 2, presentation was delivered on color and harmony. The students gained a great level of
exposure in terms of studying primary, secondary and tertiary colors and also its complimentary
including triads and tetrads.
1. Students were asked to paint the color wheel using primary colors
2. An exercise on color harmony in monochromatic and complimentary colors was given using a
maximum of 5 straight lines and 5 curved lines which would create a meaningful form on
intersection of these lines
3. Another exercise on color harmony in monochromatic and complimentary colors was given in
which geometric shapes were to be used to create a composition
On the whole, the workshop was a good success in terms of measuring the satisfaction levels of the
students. Innovative techniques and new ideas have been shared with the faculty members to enhance
the handling of the course better in the years to come.
