Movement between monolayers would be the most energetically unfavorable membrane lipid movement. Phospholipid molecules in synthetic bilayers very rarely migrate from one monolayer to the other due to the energy required. Lateral diffusion within a monolayer and rotation/vibration require less energy than moving between the two monolayers of a bilayer membrane.
