The Role Of Streetwear And Its Effect On Society
"It's where it all starts, from the ground up; street is the seed to all other fashion" says Kenta Goto
from Brknhome, a now defunct Canadian t–shirt brand (Vogel 37). There are many voices that speak
of the streetwear culture: what it is or once was, how it all started and where it is heading.
Streetwear is not just some fad or a passing trend. It is nothing but pure talent and passion, and the
vision to stand out from the rest. It is a fashion movement, primarily for the youth who roam the
streets expressing their interests, cultural identity, and common scenarios that take place in their
urban catwalks. For the youth, streetwear can be the most effective form of self–expression.
Rather than representing a set of brands or clothes, streetwear represents a lifestyle. Streetwear is
more than just clothes; it is an expression of the wearer's identity. It is an expression of a culture that
cannot be taken down, or trashed upon. Streetwear is a philosophy espousing a "do–it–yourself"
spirit that once emerged from an urging urban youth culture, which wanted something different and
unique.
THE ORIGINS
As a movement encompassing various elements of surf, skate, and hip–hop culture, the true origins
of what is considered the modern–day "streetwear craze" are questionable. Streetwear is as much a
distinct fashion movement, as it is a lifestyle, a culture promoting a sense of individuality, freedom
of expression, and an anti–authority outlook. However, a general consensus

The Fashion Designer Who Showed Avant Garde Fashion
All of these Japanese fashion designers, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto passed
the same time period in Japan. Though they have their own styles and differences among them,
these fashion designers pursued the same philosophy of 1980's deconstructionism to create avant–
garde fashion. And that is certainly evident in each of their Paris collections, especially their debut
shows. Through this fashion style, "Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons and Yohji
Yamamoto are considered the most successful and internationally known Japanese designers in the
West, and they solidified their position in the French fashion establishment" (Kawamura 92). Issey
Miyake is actual the first Japanese fashion designer who showed avant–garde fashion in the West.
He is called as the father of anti–fashion. In 1973, Miyake was invited to the group Pret–a–porter
which was created for French ready–to–wear institution. There are some young other genius fashion
designers such as Thierry Mugler and Sonia Rykiel. Two years later, he made his design shop in
1975 and hold his own Paris collection. His unique concept 'A Piece of Cloth' got a lot of attention
and gave an big impact and influence for Western people. They never seen that kinds of Miyake's
unique and creative style of dress before. "His clothing patterns were very different from the
Western styles in that he restructured the conventional construction of a garment" (Cocks 46). His

Grunge Fashion
Nothing screamed 90's fashion more than chunky shoes, baggy jeans and mood rings. The 80's
represented a time of outrageous fashion in a neon rainbow of colours, the 90's however opted
towards the casual look. You would either go for a 'too care to care' look known as grunge fashion or
a cute school girl look with some platform shoes. Need to State points and hypothesis
90s fashion for teenage girls was a mix of baggy and revealing. Some went for the grunge look and
others preferred the school girl look. The school girl look included a mini skirt, knee high socks and
of course a pair of platform shoes. Celebrities like Britney spears, the Spice Girls and Cher from
clueless were examples of the 90s school girl look. The grunge look was more unstructured and
loose and avoided any tight fitted clothing. The look consisted of a band tee, baggy ripped jeans
paired with a flannel and the more comfortable option of shoes a pair of doc martens. Celebrities
like Gwen Stefani, Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp went for this look. Guys in the 90's all went
for a 'just fell out of bed look' also following the grunge fashion. It incorporated baggy jeans, a
flannel, greasy hair covered with a backwards cap and some combat boots. The saying what goes

Fashion was truly globalized in the 1990s, as new technology like the internet and satellite television
enabled fashion trends to rapidly spread between cultures. Cheaper air travel meant that people
could travel easier to other parts of the world bringing overseas cultural influences back to Australia.
People in London or New York would therefore be wearing similar clothes to people in Perth or
Sydney. Globalization also led designers to borrow heavily from cultures previously absent from
western fashion. In particular, Chinese and Japanese clothing styles began to influence mainstream

Japanese Fashion Label Uniqlo Co
Introduction
Japanese fashion label UNIQLO Co, Ltd, is a global retail chain owned and operated by a parent
company – Fast Retailing. Other global retail brands owned and operated by the Fast Retailing
includes GU, Theory, Comptoir des Contonniers, Princess Tam and J Brand. UNIQLO operates 39
franchises as of March 31, 2016. UNIQLO's headquarters are located in Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi
Prefecture, Japan. The company's name UNIQLO, comes from "unique" and "clothing", this is
especially true because UNIQLO's clothing are very different to other high fashion brands.
Unlike high fashion brands such as Zara, H&M, Marks &Spencer, Topshop and other clothing
brands which sells fashion items that focus on trends and high fashion looks from runway and
translating into cheap garments, UNIQLO peddles its utilitarian product with reasoning most people
don't in fact get around high fashion looks direct from the runway. Urban basics in the casual
category ranges from t–shirts, sweaters and jumpers, denim jeans, jackets, underwear, shoes and
accessories (hats and scarves). By focusing on core products in a limited range of fabrics, UNIQLO
consolidates its fabric buys into mass producing affordable basics in dozens of colours that give it
greater negotiation power, thus cheaper prices for the consumer.

Fashion In Japanese Fashion
Whenever someone mentions Japan, what would a normal person think of? They could possibly
think of their cuisine, anime, or their bustling capital of Tokyo. Yet, when fashion is added to the
question, what are the first thoughts? Surely, their traditional clothing of kimonos and yukatas may
be the first thought for some, but some might think of the popularized street fashion that they see in
the media: the gyaru, lolitas, and genderless kei. Yet, their daily clothing has been adapted to women
wearing skirts and men wearing suits. Without a doubt, they are looking like the rest of the world of
which the West has influenced; they are no longer one of a kind in terms of modern fashion. In order
for them to retrieve their uniqueness in the fashion world, the Japanese branded themselves with
their many different styles of fashion, but could not have done so without the strong influence of the
media. One of the most recent bang–of–exploding–popularity Japanese fashion styles is the
genderless fashion. Genderless fashion can be seen in many different styles, including the street and
in high fashion. Particularly, it is most popular in the streets of large Japanese cities. In areas such as
Harajuku, it is not uncommon to see the renowned genderless kei and genderless gyaru walking
around, and it is slowly becoming a norm for Japanese people to see these types of fashion. British
magazine company, i–D, interviewed several people who dress up as genderless, and an individual

The Influence of Western Fashion to Japanese Fashion
What is the influence of Western fashion to Japanese fashion? Submitted by: Nicole
Marie~Madeleine C. Alberto III–Kagitingan General Description of the Study Japanese fashion is
one of the most remarkable things about Japan. It is another dimension in itself, complete with
subcultures such as the Gothic Lolita and Kogals. Many people are intrigued by how Japanese
fashion developed and people all over the world try to dress up like the Japanese because in Japan,
there is no such as thing as conformity. Everyone has their own distinct style that sets them apart

Western clothing for women truly made its mark in Japan after World War II. The women began
wearing Western–style dresses, because they were less expensive and easier to care for than
kimonos (The World Book Encyclopedia [J], 48) Western Clothing in Japan Here is how Western
fashion has dominated Japan: Men usually wear Western–style suits for work and out on the street.
They also wear Western clothes when going out or relaxing at home Fashion–conscious teenage
girls are fond of wearing pink and other super–feminine clothes whereas older women, being
brought in the workforce during the peak of Japan's bubble economy during the 1980's, have
become fond of luxury designer items and high fashion, which can sometimes be noted through the
suits they wear for work. Women who have high positions in global corporations usually wear
designer suits, the designer usually being either European or American. Japanese children in the city,
whose parents also wear Western clothes, wear Western clothes as well. They wear what normal
American children wear such as jeans, sweaters, etc. The elders still prefer to wear the kimono in
order to preserve tradition but more often than not, they opt to wear Western clothes because it takes
less of a hassle to put on Note: Although majority of Japan's population have started wearing
Western clothing, many people in rural areas still wear kimonos every

How Fashion Professionals Are Inspired by History and Culture
How fashion professionals are inspired by history and culture?
It has long been claimed that fashion is a repetition of well–forgotten old. For centuries, designers
drew inspiration from ancient cultures and traditions, ancient civilizations, mythical gods and exotic
countries. Often the Greek goddesses, who have long manipulated the arts and war, intervened also
in fashion. For years the dresses are current, familiar from mythology and the movies with
mythological themes – naked shoulder, enchanting sets, lavish tale folds and embellishments of
gold.
Retro trends, which also inspired designers, recently make an impact and in their collections.
One of the most inspired collections in autumn and winter this year is Marc Jacobs, who ... Show

Elements of menswear designed by Tisci over the years, also influenced the making of the designs.
Givenchy's new collection for the next cold season is very strong and involves a lot of strict
silhouettes and many pants, borrowed from the male wardrobe. Tisci has also provided different
combinations of pants and boots to the knee combined with a short jacket or leather jacket, most of
them very suitable for all accompanying events before and after the horse riding event. Dresses from
leather with knew length or mini skirt combined with a turtleneck and jacket, or dresses combined
with s sleeveless top and cape is another possibility that is not missing. Dresses made in bright
colours and decorated with lace are part of the nightly visions. There is a lot of accessorizes that
complete the outfits. Wide belts, emphasizing the waist, unique boots that are again knee high,
reminding leg covering boot. Short leather gloves complete the collection.
Street culture and art is Jean Paul Gautier's new autumn/winter collection for this year. He presents
his favorite punk themes in the form of colorful rebellious hair, combined with visions entirely made
of smooth black leather. The designer uses natural fur in the form of large collars or ironically mixed
it with artificial materials in the form of hair coats in neon colors. The main reason given in the
collection, however, is

Mahogany Film Analysis
The film I chose was Mahogany. The drama film was about a struggling fashion design student
name Tracy from Chicago who found success through modeling in Rome with the help of a fashion
photographer. As she became more successful it tarnished her relationship with a social activist
name Brian and in the fashion industry. In the film the actress shows that Tracy represents women
who come from rough environments that are willing to see bigger dreams for themselves. Tracy is
relatable to women then and now because we all have an urge of wanting success and all of the
perks that comes with following something you are truly passionate about. Mahogany represents
women going through the process of fame and success and not being able to handle the ... Show

Also, it is hard trying to make everyone envision your dreams and how much you believe in them.
Dreams are imaginary until it's up to you to make it happen, which is what Tracy did by
continuously being persistent to get what she wanted.
Fashion and politics are displayed in this film, which is still prevalent today. The term "white
famous" describes the dialogue of the film because "it's ostensibly that moment for people of color
working in music, television, film or comedy or whichever culture space when one's star power
penetrates the mainstream" ("Carter"). When you are acknowledged by another race you feel
compelled to allow others to use you as a trophy display to collect a profit if there is no guidance
around you. During the film Tracy and Brian had a conversation and he referred to her as "I think he
needs another nigger". The intensity of both character's shows one demands success, but the other
demands equality for black people. Brian hints to Tracy that sticking to her own kind of people will
be more beneficial to her because she comes from a different world than the rest.
Although this may be true, I can understand why she had a hard time accepting it, because black
people have been oppressed their entire lives and during that time a lot of black women weren't
getting opportunities like her, which made her take advantage of that. It relates to politics because
her designs were criticized by several people in the industry, which was controversial being a

Therefore, for the purpose of this report, two specific market segments have been selected and
profiled to provide an overview of which segments H&M should specially target when launching in
Melbourne.
3.1 – Profile One – Women 's outwear segment
The foremost market segment that H&M should target would be the women 's outerwear segment
which includes all garments from tops to blouses to jackets (REFERENCE). Main reason being, this
market segment is reasonably profitable with a Retail Value of over $3000 million (Refer to figure
XX), where women have traditionally been the dominate consumer in the clothing and footwear
industry (REFERENCE). However, there appears to be a new social trend where men are becoming
more fashion–minded and are also looking for cheaper options (REFERENCE). In recent times,
there has been a change in preference for young women, where they do not only demand for high
quality yet fashionable products, it must also be low priced (REFERENCE). H&M should then be
able to target this segment, as the company 's core concept coincides with this new trend. Where
H&M 's women 's clothing are designed for women of all ages who are fashion minded, where its
product line includes "everything from modern basics to tailored classics, sportswear, maternity
clothes and cutting–edge fashion." (H&M, 2008, pg. 17). However, for the purpose of this report
and to make it easier to target, the primary segment will be young women aged 18 to 24, while the

Fashion In Japanese Fashion
FASHION Another distinct change in Japanese culture is the way they dress, from traditional
clothing to modern day. In the olden days, the kimono was a Japanese garment that was worn by
women on a daily basis. However, today, they are mainly worn for special occasions such as
funerals, wedding ceremonies, church, etc. Fashion represents an important component of Japanese
popular culture due to its tremendous contribution in enabling people to express themselves through
their clothing. This is done through many styles such as freestyle, Lolita, Cosplay and much more.
Japan is known for their street fashion of freestyle. It is a fashion style where people customize their
outfits by adopting a mixture of current and traditional trends similar to high waist pants and shirts,
to overall pants and much more. "Harajuku" is a name of a district in Tokyo that is known for
freestyle fashion and also a trendsetting area. A great deal of teenagers, spends time hanging out and
women come in style clothing that they created themselves to flaunt it around. Lolita is another
fashion style that can be instantly recognisable like lacy or frilly skirts, heavy makeup, hair bands,
and ribbon. Lolita consists of over fifteen different types of style for women. A few of which are
Gothic Lolita which has been generally considered to be the most popular style of Lolita, it has the
basic Lolita aesthetic of cute, mixed with dark colored materials and dark makeup. Classic Lolita

Descriptive Essay On Iris Apfel
I typically don't idolize a fashion icon or look to another for inspiration in terms of style. When I'm
browsing through racks for new clothes or picking an outfit for the day, I choose an attire that fits
according to my tastes and preferences. I try not to let others influence my style and determine what
I can and cannot wear. However, if there was one fashion icon I had to pick, I would choose Iris
Apfel. I admire her wisdom and draw inspiration from the ways she enjoys life to her positivity in
individualism. One day, as I was scanning through the popular feed on Instagram, a woman adorned
in a flashy attire with accompanying vibrant, chunky accessories stopped my fingers from scrolling
down any further. Usually, I wouldn't support a rainbow–themed outfit, assuming the multitude of
colors would result in a clashing catastrophe. Yet, the multicolored outfit suited her, as if she was the
only person who could pull it off. She embodied confidence. Despite her age at ninety–three years
old, Iris Apfel embraced her own personal style instead of yielding to the expected attire for an older
person. I was utterly amazed by the way she carried herself. Plus, it wasn't just Instagram that Iris
Apfel had made an appearance, but Buzzfeed as well. Having encountered Apfel's fashion
statements online numerous times, I was persuaded to search for her online and learn about other
inspiring qualities. I discovered a quote that I loved: "I don't dress to be stared at. I dress for
myself."

Japanese Culture Influence On American Fashion
"Japanese culture definitely influences American fashion"– Jason Campbell. Japanese culture has
influenced the world dramatically over time through acculturation. The advancements have greatly
benefited the world in which they live. Not only in Japan, their culture has its examples across the
globe. Japan, the land of the rising Sun, has influenced the world culturally the most through their
innovations in three main industries: domestic and commercial transportation, war machines, and
broadcasting.
Japanese transportation has acculturated with other countries across the world. Automobiles such as
Honda or Toyota are globally known. According to Beppi Corsariol's article, "Japanese cars are

Throughout fashion history, certain sartorial and manufacturing trends that eventually spread like
wildfire can be traced back to a particular designer. Think of Christian Dior's silhouette defining
New Look or Yves Saint–Laurent's radical push towards prêt–à–porter. Streetwear, the ever–popular
genre of high–end casual wear, is not one of them. Instead, the style is something of a chimera,
growing out of several different subcultures and geographic sources. Starting in the late 70s with the
rise of skateboarding and surfing culture and their associated fashion trends, streetwear has grown to
encompass a wide range of stylistic origins ranging from hip–hop culture to Japanese street fashion.

More than 130 titles of fashion presses are distributed and their impacts on the dissemination and
diffusion of fashion trends are deemed substantial in the Japanese market (Sakaguchi, 1992 as cited
in John Fernie, 2004), together with the impacts of the role model figures of the time and the peer
pressures/interactions within and between social groupings. Amongst the 4,000 stores directly
operated by Italian luxury fashion houses worldwide, Tokyo has the largest concentration of those
brand boutiques, accounting for 188 shops, which is followed by Milan (124), Seoul (108), Paris
(92), New York (76) and London (72) (Senken Shimbun, 2000 as cited in John Fernie, 2004).
From the above discussion it can be seen that the Japanese Readymade garment market is very big
and competitive in nature. The market fluctuates according to the changing fashion trends and the
taste of the people.

the Group handles all the processes required in the apparel industry–design, production, logistics,

a belief that the customer should come first in every aspect of the company 's operations.

Retailers can shift sourcing according to the costs and exchange rates. Manufacturers can hedge risk
by supplying different retailers.
Zara has succeeded by creating a vertically integrated system where the disadvantages of vertical
integration (higher costs of manufacturing in Europe, lack of flexibility in shifting plant locations,
etc.) are offset by the unprecedented speed and design flexibility that its tightly coordinated vertical
system permits. Thus, Zara's highly compressed product development cycle would be impossible for
Gap or any other retailer relying on contract manufacturers in Southeast Asia.
Zara's vertical integration works for Zara because it fits with other aspects of its strategy: mid–
market pricing, high–fashion orientation, and constantly changing product range.
For Gap, vertical integration probably would not work: it's pricing is relatively low (hence, it needs
to produce in low–wage countries), it does not have manufacturing experience, and its products tend
to be basic staple (jeans, T–shirts, khaki pants and shorts) such that seasonal product changes are

Fashion In Modern Society
"Fashion is very important. It is life–enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth
doing well." Vivienne Westwood. Fashion is not only a materialistic aspect in society but a voice a
voice which project identity, whether it is expensive or not. Extant fashion has enticed us as
consumers to reveal a quality about ourselves. In a world where fashion can be placed into a
hierarchy. Contemporary fashion reflects labels morphed into a designer's aesthetic, but with a more
attainable price point. The development of modern society has become a ground breaking system,
freely expressed by all demographics, whether it's a child or someone in there 80's. Coco is the six
year old Japanese instagram star, who emphasizes fashion as a culture. Her street style places her as
an outlier in–between other six year olds. Coco has mirrored her voice through the way she dresses
whilst not wanting to be ordinary achieving this through contemporary fashion.
The revelation of fashion has constructed a religion, where people express interest and beliefs.
Growing up having seen fashion form the outside world to museums to the village sin Cyprus. I
have recognized the way fashion is expressed so different yet so
similar, universally and how it portrays individuals separately. When it comes to mannequins or

the way we have constructed ideologies and designs within fashion today.

Designing A Successful Brand Collaboration
Introduction
What comes to your mind if Tumi meets Mini Cooper? What do you think if fashion meets soda?
You will be surprised and curious about them. This is the magic of brand collaboration.
Collaboration strategy becomes a trend/mainstream in various fields these years. The idea of brand
collaboration is frequently used in different industries, especially the fashion, food, and film
industry. Forming a successful brand collaboration is one of the best and most–effective ways to
reach new customers. An unexpected collaboration can refresh strategy and build a good brand
awareness. More and more brands realize these benefits of collaboration, so it becomes a popular
choice for them to form partnerships with others. The trend of brand collaboration will continue a
couple years, so it becomes more competitive because more industries and brands decide to enter
this trend. Reconsidering who and how to strengthen the collaboration can be the way of developing
the strategies in the future. Companies need to select a good/fit partner and identify the idea they
want to achieve in order to set up a successful collaboration. Customers will still have a large
interest in this trend but there are few matters that customers would like to have improved, such as
quality or functions.

Madeleine Vionnet Research Paper
Madeleine Vionnet was born in France in 1876 and was apprenticed to a dressmaker while she was a
child (Arnold, 2015). At the age of eleven, Mme. Madeline realized the gift of her hands and
became a seamstress. In the early 1900s, she began her career in a couture house in Paris, Callot
Soeurs (Arnold, 2015). There she worked for six years and skilled herself in draping fabrics directly
on live models. She was so dedicated to her passion that she worked twelve hours a day and often
during lunch hours. This dedication earned her the title of "architect" among other dressmakers.
Later, she worked with Jacques Doucet from 1907 to 1912 (Arnold, 2015). Mr. Doucet was a
fashion designer and art collector. Here, Vionnet's first collection was considered a revolution in the
house and for its time. Unfortunately, an ageing Doucet could not keep up with the taste of women
after World War I. Vionnet never learned sketching, but developed skills in dressmaking in haute
couture before opening her own establishment in 1912 (Kirke, 1998).
During 1920, the war had passed and people were ready to push aside the old trends. When the
prohibition law passed, jazz music and new dances became all the rage. This influenced Madeleine

Japanese Female Apparel Market For Japanese Women Essay
While the bubbly outfits with overflowing laces and floral patterns that highlight the soft and
sensitive characteristics once dominated the female apparel market in Japan, nowadays, Japanese
women prefer balancing out the femininity with some stylish mannish clothing. Figure 3, where the
woman matched her black lace dress and high heels with an olive–green military jacket, perfectly
exemplifies the chic "甘辛ミックスコーデ" (The sweet–and–sexy coordinates) adored by many
Japanese female consumers. The concept of "甘辛ミックス" is so well received in Japan because it
spices up the overall look with an exquisite aesthetic balance. Known for wanting to break away
from the mainstream, young Japanese female quickly adopted MA–1 jacket and the "girly–military
look" as a mean to expressive their individualism in contradiction to social norms. As a result, MA–
1 jacket has slowly become a wardrobe staple for Japanese young women.
Another significant aspect of MA–1 jacket that helps it secure its top–ranked position is its ability to
"casual down" a dressy outfit. Directly translated from the Japanese–made English word, カジュア
ルダウン, "casualing–down" coordinates means to dress–down, or to break down the formality of
fancy clothing (FASHION PRESS). A notable change in style has swept over Japan when people
began to embrace apparels that value both comfort and personal style. According to a survey
conducted by Jiratanatiteenun, Mizutani, Sato, Kitaguchi, and Kajiwara in 2011, "Casual [style] was

A number of Japanese fashion brands are beginning to rival the popularity of
American and European brands, as a result of unique trends and cutting edge style.
It is the talent for producing such cutting edge and uniquely styled fashion of the Japanese designers
that provided the inspiration for the „cute‟ Riot Grrrl style in Britain during the
1990‟s. In an article by writer Sharon Kinsella (1997) titled „The Japanization of European youth‟
Kinsella recognises that childlike elements from the Japanese designers began to emerge in the
fashion‟s of the 1990‟s amongst the European consumers, as "they began to wear „cute‟ baby doll
dresses or old fashioned frilly frocks with Dr Martins". The „Riot Grrrl‟ style also known as the
grunge trend of the 1990‟s formed in Britain was directly and indirectly influenced by the Japanese
„cute‟ culture, first created by Japanese designers in the
1980‟s, which saw the Kawaii style of adorable, innocent, simple, gentle, and child–like fashion
dominate the Japanese popular culture of it‟s time. This is a strong example of how globalization
has allowed the designers of today to combine different elements of design, and trends from
different cultures globally, to produce new designs and trends that are more of a cutting edge style
and uniqueness. "Japanese brands also made their presence felt in the highend market, attempting to

Culture And Subcultures Of Fashion

androgynously, or wearing the most bizzare pieces of clothing ranging from sky–high platforms to

and what people don't know is that of these fashions there are different communities and subcultures
of fashion that these people in the pictures conform to. Japan has a vast array of street fashion styles
and trends. They are all mixed with elements of traditional, foreign and/or local styles. Their street
fashion cultures vary from the tan skinned Ganguro girls to the victorian styled Lolitas. One of the
most popular and biggest Japanese fashion influencers were the high school girls of Kogyaru. What
exactly did these schoolgirls do to become one of the biggest trendsetters of Japan? The answers are
within their signature style, Japan's popular magazines, and ability to popularize certain products.
Kogyaru style was started by and became very popular among high school girls. That's what the

likes and dislikes, their personality and most importantly their culture.
Clothing dates back to about 100,000–500,000 years ago. The first clothing was made out of animal

Muslim women are supposed to dress modestly, covering more body then the men. The law requires
these women to wear hijab which is mosdest clothing ranging from headdress to the traditional

widely referred to as the national costume of Japan and is used for festive occasions in Japan. Once
used to determine social class, the kimono has now become a symbol of "distinctive Japaneseness".
The kimono represents the diligent and graceful manner of the Japanese woman. This representation
came from geisha women who once wore them (Assmann 360–362).
Fashion through the different cultures also defines that cultures religion. Many cultures have
tradition religious outfits. One example is Jewish men wearing yamakas during religious events. The
yamakas symbolize the relationship between man and God. In the Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism
and Jainism religions the people wear natural, unstitched cloth while performing religious
ceremonies. The natural, unstitched cloth represents purity and devotion to the task.
Fashion communicates the culture and ways of people. It is a way for people to express their

who wear bright colors are cheerful and lively. According to Isabel Grant and Graeme Stephen

abnormal. However, in the opposing side, what we lack to understand, it is their world and who they
express themselves as. In modern day Japan, the Japanese society has been quickly adapting to the
differences in self–expression and identity in comparison to American society have been able to
adapt. This includes the extremity of fashion and how it has been evolving over centuries within the
cities of Japan. Regardless of how eccentric each style and trend may be, it ultimately can go to
these extremes because of a historical context of uniformity. These subculture of street fashion grow
within subgroups through the acceptance versus rejection because they develop within groups. Japan
is a uniformed society where many of their people are conscious of their respective positions and
roles they play in the range of social structures. On top of that, it includes the action to dress
accordingly, where it be a student, service industry employee, office worker, or yakuza member,
uniformity is a

The Role Of Streetwear And Its Effect On Society

  • 1. The Role Of Streetwear And Its Effect On Society "It's where it all starts, from the ground up; street is the seed to all other fashion" says Kenta Goto from Brknhome, a now defunct Canadian t–shirt brand (Vogel 37). There are many voices that speak of the streetwear culture: what it is or once was, how it all started and where it is heading. Streetwear is not just some fad or a passing trend. It is nothing but pure talent and passion, and the vision to stand out from the rest. It is a fashion movement, primarily for the youth who roam the streets expressing their interests, cultural identity, and common scenarios that take place in their urban catwalks. For the youth, streetwear can be the most effective form of self–expression. Rather than representing a set of brands or clothes, streetwear represents a lifestyle. Streetwear is more than just clothes; it is an expression of the wearer's identity. It is an expression of a culture that cannot be taken down, or trashed upon. Streetwear is a philosophy espousing a "do–it–yourself" spirit that once emerged from an urging urban youth culture, which wanted something different and unique. THE ORIGINS As a movement encompassing various elements of surf, skate, and hip–hop culture, the true origins of what is considered the modern–day "streetwear craze" are questionable. Streetwear is as much a distinct fashion movement, as it is a lifestyle, a culture promoting a sense of individuality, freedom of expression, and an anti–authority outlook. However, a general consensus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Fashion Designer Who Showed Avant Garde Fashion All of these Japanese fashion designers, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto passed the same time period in Japan. Though they have their own styles and differences among them, these fashion designers pursued the same philosophy of 1980's deconstructionism to create avant– garde fashion. And that is certainly evident in each of their Paris collections, especially their debut shows. Through this fashion style, "Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto are considered the most successful and internationally known Japanese designers in the West, and they solidified their position in the French fashion establishment" (Kawamura 92). Issey Miyake is actual the first Japanese fashion designer who showed avant–garde fashion in the West. He is called as the father of anti–fashion. In 1973, Miyake was invited to the group Pret–a–porter which was created for French ready–to–wear institution. There are some young other genius fashion designers such as Thierry Mugler and Sonia Rykiel. Two years later, he made his design shop in 1975 and hold his own Paris collection. His unique concept 'A Piece of Cloth' got a lot of attention and gave an big impact and influence for Western people. They never seen that kinds of Miyake's unique and creative style of dress before. • 8. Grunge Fashion Nothing screamed 90's fashion more than chunky shoes, baggy jeans and mood rings. The 80's represented a time of outrageous fashion in a neon rainbow of colours, the 90's however opted towards the casual look. You would either go for a 'too care to care' look known as grunge fashion or a cute school girl look with some platform shoes. Need to State points and hypothesis 90s fashion for teenage girls was a mix of baggy and revealing. Some went for the grunge look and others preferred the school girl look. The school girl look included a mini skirt, knee high socks and of course a pair of platform shoes. Celebrities like Britney spears, the Spice Girls and Cher from clueless were examples of the 90s school girl look. The grunge look was more unstructured and loose and avoided any tight fitted clothing. The look consisted of a band tee, baggy ripped jeans paired with a flannel and the more comfortable option of shoes a pair of doc martens. Celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp went for this look. Guys in the 90's all went for a 'just fell out of bed look' also following the grunge fashion. Unlike high fashion brands such as Zara, H&M, Marks &Spencer, Topshop and other clothing brands which sells fashion items that focus on trends and high fashion looks from runway and translating into cheap garments, UNIQLO peddles its utilitarian product with reasoning most people don't in fact get around high fashion looks direct from the runway. Urban basics in the casual category ranges from t–shirts, sweaters and jumpers, denim jeans, jackets, underwear, shoes and accessories (hats and scarves). By focusing on core products in a limited range of fabrics, UNIQLO consolidates its fabric buys into mass producing affordable basics in dozens of colours that give it greater negotiation power, thus cheaper prices for the consumer. • 12. Fashion In Japanese Fashion Whenever someone mentions Japan, what would a normal person think of? They could possibly think of their cuisine, anime, or their bustling capital of Tokyo. Yet, when fashion is added to the question, what are the first thoughts? Surely, their traditional clothing of kimonos and yukatas may be the first thought for some, but some might think of the popularized street fashion that they see in the media: the gyaru, lolitas, and genderless kei. Yet, their daily clothing has been adapted to women wearing skirts and men wearing suits. Without a doubt, they are looking like the rest of the world of which the West has influenced; they are no longer one of a kind in terms of modern fashion. In order for them to retrieve their uniqueness in the fashion world, the Japanese branded themselves with their many different styles of fashion, but could not have done so without the strong influence of the media. One of the most recent bang–of–exploding–popularity Japanese fashion styles is the genderless fashion. Genderless fashion can be seen in many different styles, including the street and in high fashion. Particularly, it is most popular in the streets of large Japanese cities. In areas such as Harajuku, it is not uncommon to see the renowned genderless kei and genderless gyaru walking around, and it is slowly becoming a norm for Japanese people to see these types of fashion. British magazine company, i–D, interviewed several people who dress up as genderless, and an individual has have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is another dimension in itself, complete with subcultures such as the Gothic Lolita and Kogals. Many people are intrigued by how Japanese fashion developed and people all over the world try to dress up like the Japanese because in Japan, there is no such as thing as conformity. Everyone has their own distinct style that sets them apart from others, no matter what subculture they belong to. People all over the world consider Tokyo as one of the fashion capitals of the world. The women began wearing Western–style dresses, because they were less expensive and easier to care for than kimonos (The World Book Encyclopedia [J], 48) Western Clothing in Japan Here is how Western fashion has dominated Japan: Men usually wear Western–style suits for work and out on the street. They also wear Western clothes when going out or relaxing at home Fashion–conscious teenage girls are fond of wearing pink and other super–feminine clothes whereas older women, being brought in the workforce during the peak of Japan's bubble economy during the 1980's, have become fond of luxury designer items and high fashion, which can sometimes be noted through the suits they wear for work. Women who have high positions in global corporations usually wear designer suits, the designer usually being either European or American. Japanese children in the city, whose parents also wear Western clothes, wear Western clothes as well. They wear what normal American children wear such as jeans, sweaters, etc. The elders still prefer to wear the kimono in order to preserve tradition but more often than not, they opt to wear Western clothes because it takes less of a hassle to put on Note: Although majority of Japan's population have started wearing Western clothing, many people in rural areas still wear kimonos every ... • 16. How Fashion Professionals Are Inspired by History and Culture How fashion professionals are inspired by history and culture? It has long been claimed that fashion is a repetition of well–forgotten old. For centuries, designers drew inspiration from ancient cultures and traditions, ancient civilizations, mythical gods and exotic countries. Often the Greek goddesses, who have long manipulated the arts and war, intervened also in fashion. For years the dresses are current, familiar from mythology and the movies with mythological themes – naked shoulder, enchanting sets, lavish tale folds and embellishments of gold. Retro trends, which also inspired designers, recently make an impact and in their collections. One of the most inspired collections in autumn and winter this year is Marc Jacobs, who ... Givenchy's new collection for the next cold season is very strong and involves a lot of strict silhouettes and many pants, borrowed from the male wardrobe. Dresses from leather with knew length or mini skirt combined with a turtleneck and jacket, or dresses combined with s sleeveless top and cape is another possibility that is not missing. Dresses made in bright colours and decorated with lace are part of the nightly visions. There is a lot of accessorizes that complete the outfits. Wide belts, emphasizing the waist, unique boots that are again knee high, reminding leg covering boot. Short leather gloves complete the collection. Street culture and art is Jean Paul Gautier's new autumn/winter collection for this year. The drama film was about a struggling fashion design student name Tracy from Chicago who found success through modeling in Rome with the help of a fashion photographer. As she became more successful it tarnished her relationship with a social activist name Brian and in the fashion industry. In the film the actress shows that Tracy represents women who come from rough environments that are willing to see bigger dreams for themselves. Tracy is relatable to women then and now because we all have an urge of wanting success and all of the perks that comes with following something you are truly passionate about. Also, it is hard trying to make everyone envision your dreams and how much you believe in them. Dreams are imaginary until it's up to you to make it happen, which is what Tracy did by continuously being persistent to get what she wanted. Fashion and politics are displayed in this film, which is still prevalent today. The term "white famous" describes the dialogue of the film because "it's ostensibly that moment for people of color working in music, television, film or comedy or whichever culture space when one's star power penetrates the mainstream" ("Carter"). When you are acknowledged by another race you feel compelled to allow others to use you as a trophy display to collect a profit if there is no guidance around you. During the film Tracy and Brian had a conversation and he referred to her as "I think he needs another nigger". The intensity of both character's shows one demands success, but the other demands equality for black people. Brian hints to Tracy that sticking to her own kind of people will be more beneficial to her because she comes from a different world than the rest. Although this may be true, I can understand why she had a hard time accepting it, because black people have been oppressed their entire lives and during that time a lot of black women weren't getting opportunities like her, which made her take advantage of that. It relates to politics because her designs were criticized by several people in the industry, which was controversial being a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Descriptive Essay On Iris Apfel I typically don't idolize a fashion icon or look to another for inspiration in terms of style. When I'm browsing through racks for new clothes or picking an outfit for the day, I choose an attire that fits according to my tastes and preferences. I try not to let others influence my style and determine what I can and cannot wear. However, if there was one fashion icon I had to pick, I would choose Iris Apfel. I admire her wisdom and draw inspiration from the ways she enjoys life to her positivity in individualism. One day, as I was scanning through the popular feed on Instagram, a woman adorned in a flashy attire with accompanying vibrant, chunky accessories stopped my fingers from scrolling down any further. Usually, I wouldn't support a rainbow–themed outfit, assuming the multitude of colors would result in a clashing catastrophe. Yet, the multicolored outfit suited her, as if she was the only person who could pull it off. She embodied confidence. Despite her age at ninety–three years old, Iris Apfel embraced her own personal style instead of yielding to the expected attire for an older person. I was utterly amazed by the way she carried herself. Plus, it wasn't just Instagram that Iris Apfel had made an appearance, but Buzzfeed as well. Having encountered Apfel's fashion statements online numerous times, I was persuaded to search for her online and learn about other inspiring qualities. I discovered a quote that I loved: "I don't dress to be stared at. I dress for myself." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Manufacturers can hedge risk by supplying different retailers. Zara has succeeded by creating a vertically integrated system where the disadvantages of vertical integration (higher costs of manufacturing in Europe, lack of flexibility in shifting plant locations, etc.) are offset by the unprecedented speed and design flexibility that its tightly coordinated vertical system permits. Thus, Zara's highly compressed product development cycle would be impossible for Gap or any other retailer relying on contract manufacturers in Southeast Asia. Zara's vertical integration works for Zara because it fits with other aspects of its strategy: mid– market pricing, high–fashion orientation, and constantly changing product range. For Gap, vertical integration probably would not work: it's pricing is relatively low (hence, it needs to produce in low–wage countries), it does not have manufacturing experience, and its products tend to be basic staple (jeans, T–shirts, khaki pants and shorts) such that seasonal product changes are adequate to keep abreast of changing market preferences. A number of Japanese fashion brands are beginning to rival the popularity of American and European brands, as a result of unique trends and cutting edge style. It is the talent for producing such cutting edge and uniquely styled fashion of the Japanese designers that provided the inspiration for the „cute‟ Riot Grrrl style in Britain during the 1990‟s. In an article by writer Sharon Kinsella (1997) titled „The Japanization of European youth‟ Kinsella recognises that childlike elements from the Japanese designers began to emerge in the fashion‟s of the 1990‟s amongst the European consumers, as "they began to wear „cute‟ baby doll dresses or old fashioned frilly frocks with Dr Martins". The „Riot Grrrl‟ style also known as the grunge trend of the 1990‟s formed in Britain was directly and indirectly influenced by the Japanese „cute‟ culture, first created by Japanese designers in the 1980‟s, which saw the Kawaii style of adorable, innocent, simple, gentle, and child–like fashion dominate the Japanese popular culture of it‟s time. Guys and girls dressing up androgynously, or wearing the most bizzare pieces of clothing ranging from sky–high platforms to mixing unlikely prints together. Some even wear their hair and makeup in the most avant–garde way. Japan has a vast array of street fashion styles and trends. They are all mixed with elements of traditional, foreign and/or local styles. Their street fashion cultures vary from the tan skinned Ganguro girls to the victorian styled Lolitas. One of the most popular and biggest Japanese fashion influencers were the high school girls of Kogyaru. What exactly did these schoolgirls do to become one of the biggest trendsetters of Japan? The answers are within their signature style, Japan's popular magazines, and ability to popularize certain products. Kogyaru style was started by and became very popular among high school girls. That's what the name literally means: 'ko' means little but it could also stand for high school and 'gyaru' means girl. The Importance Of Uniformity Charie Cheng Seminar in East Asian Societies Saito Satoru Final Paper December 20, 2017 The Eccentric but Uniformity of Fashion in Modern Day Japan Fashion has always been an international tool for self–expression by designers and creators all across the world. The way each society's trends change is due to the individuality of its history and culture. In many cases, often due to societal differences, what seems to be unfamiliar to one culture, is deemed different, weird, or even abnormal. However, in the opposing side, what we lack to understand, it is their world and who they express themselves as. In modern day Japan, the Japanese society has been quickly adapting to the differences in self–expression and identity in comparison to American society have been able to adapt.
