Hip Hop Fashion Culture
For years, fashion has been a huge subculture of the hip hop industry. Emerging in the 1970s, hip
hop was created to promote experimentation and innovative ways of self–expression. The fashion
culture of hip hop, also referred to as "big fashion" or "street fashion, has consistently been complex
throughout its many different eras and styles. While fashion in hip hop is not constricted to a
specific trend or designs, it is well known for its overflow of different styles all influenced by
vibrant African American and Latino youths from the urban city streets of New York City later
followed by Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Detroit,
Memphis, Virginia, Atlanta, St. Louis and others. Many inaccurately credit ... Show more content on

In the late 1980s, conscious rappers like KRS–One and Queen Latifah mostly fashioned colors of
black, red, and green to pay homage to their African American ancestors. Dreadlocks, Kente cloth
hats, and Africa chains were also famous trends of this era. During the early 1990s, a unique style of
hip hop surfaced to popularity along with a new style of hip hop fashion as well. Pop rap artists like
The Fresh Prince popularized baseball caps and neon colored clothing. TLC and Aaliyah emerged as
deep iconic fashion influencers to female hip hop listeners. These women wore oversized pants and
big flannel button ups coupled with sport bras to add their own touch of femininity to the male
dominant industry. A pivotal moment in hip hop fashion was in 1984, when Michael Jordan signed a
multimillion dollar sneaker contract with Nike Athletics. This sparked a surge of popularity in name
brand sneakers and rap artists of all kinds were seen wearing the latest Jordan's at many events and
in music videos. Reebok, Carhartt, Timberlands, Champion, and Fila were also popular brands
associated with the hip hop style of that time. The sounds of hip hop then evolved into Gangsta Rap
and artist such as N.W.A. influenced the gangsta street style, which mimicked the cholo style of the
west coast. Rappers incorporated these trends with darker

Andy Sachs's Love For Fashion
Andy Sachs, a young aspired journalist, seeking for a job finds herself employed by Runway
Magazine, a fashion magazine as an Assistant to the Chief Editor. While initially accepting the
position, Andy had to learn the details of the job and the culture of the business. However, Andy
took on the challenge and felt that she could manage the hideous culture of fashion, behaviors, and
attitudes of her coworkers in order to survive for at least a year until she finds a journalist position
of her liking.
The perception of people who involve themselves in this line of career, according to Benedictus
(2009) are those that have a "love for fashion, that's why they're doing it. It's almost like a little bit
of a social atmosphere when you come in every day. Like when girls go out at night and they see
what each other is wearing. It's nice." But in Andy's case, she felt that it was just a job and the
fashion was not her purpose for accepting the job at Runway. She initially did not buy into the
culture of fashion and continued to report to work in her original dress code.
As in any job there are credential job requirements. Andy had the educational background and ...

Andy continued to be viewed as a misfit for the company's culture as she did not behave, dress or
own the designer fashion needed to blend in. What I have learned is that in the fashion industry such
as the Runway, Benedictus (2009) mention in a Vogue article, a prerequisite of the job, is fashion.
People would die to have the opportunity to work there. The work attire is crucial when the clothes
of "what you wear is more important the job itself because if you came in looking like you were
wearing something boring every day" you're not fit for the culture of the job (Benedictus, 2009). In
Andy's case, she got the job without the prerequisite of the culture of fashion, which is very
uncommon in this field of

Pop Cultural Fashion Statement: Native American Culture
Pop Culture Report: Native American Fashion Statement In May of 2016, MAC Cosmetics released
their new collection called the "vibe tribe" (Oliver 2016). Cleary the clothing line is inspired by
Native American culture, even though the company denies it when there's attention brought to the
subject. Some Native Americans do not find this collection offensive because to them, it's just make
up. The problem is that their culture is being acknowledged as the inspiration. MAC cosmetics is
only one of the many companies in the fashion industry that "borrows" from Native Americans and
their cultural regalia. If make up gets away with cultural appropriation, then does that mean that
other companies are ok to get away with it? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problems are: 1. Consumers may believe that is how Native Americans dress or how they
represent themselves and 2. Constant misrepresentations to an existing, but dying culture leads to
presenting the idea that Native Americans are just a trend, equipped with moscots. It may be safe to
assume that most fashion companies are not checking with Native communities before using their
culture to make a profit. The consumer doesn't realize that by buying these products, they are subtly
saying that the company is not in the wrong. Actually they are unknowingly validating the
company's decision to basically assume a culture for money. If people want to buy something
representative of Native culture the consumer should by from a Native American designer, where it
would be authentic as well as properly

Japanese Culture Influence On American Fashion
"Japanese culture definitely influences American fashion"– Jason Campbell. Japanese culture has
influenced the world dramatically over time through acculturation. The advancements have greatly
benefited the world in which they live. Not only in Japan, their culture has its examples across the
globe. Japan, the land of the rising Sun, has influenced the world culturally the most through their
innovations in three main industries: domestic and commercial transportation, war machines, and
broadcasting.
Japanese transportation has acculturated with other countries across the world. Automobiles such as
Honda or Toyota are globally known. According to Beppi Corsariol's article, "Japanese cars are
becoming the standard for quality, consistently topping the Consumer Reports and J.D. Power
ratings. Toyota surpassed GM as the world's biggest car maker." Automobiles from Japan are
increasing in popularity because of this and present great value to the consumer. The Japanese

Fashion Values In The Fashion Industry
The current reality of clothing production, called fast fashion, is the industry standard of mass
producing luxury styles in a matter of weeks. To do so, clothes are churned out quickly using poor
quality materials. This is problematic because of the large amount of unnecessary environmental
damage that this business model causes. The fashion industry should abandon the current trend of
fast fashion and disposable clothing to decrease the amount of hazardous environmental waste
created. The fashion industry should adopt slow fashion values that aim to cut excess consumer
waste by changing the current societal norms around fashion buying and clothing disposal. Fast
fashion has become the pinnacle of the fashion industry because it is very profitable. Cheap material
and cheap overseas labor has made places like Walmart, Zara, and H&M twice as profitable as any
retail store (Cline, "The Clothes Make the Movement", 21). The average American household
spends one thousand and seven hundred dollars on apparel every year. One third of the average
household expense is claimed by women aged sixteen and older who spend over five hundred
dollars on clothing and shoes annually (Bureau of Labor Statistics). That dollar amount translates
into an average of sixty–eight items of clothing and seven pairs of shoes per the average American
(Cline, "The Clothes Make the Movement", 21). Cheap textile materials quickly fall apart, lose color
and shape, and are replaced by new fashion trends.

The Role Of Fashion In The 20th Century
Throughout the 20th century, every decade experienced a new crisis. Along with a new crisis came
the inevitable change in the ongoing fashion trends adopted by the women that were enmeshed in
their own time. A woman's status and station in society affected the type of clothing choices deemed
acceptable or expected of her. We shall take a deeper look at the history, which reveals how the role
of the woman unfolds through popular clothing styles, as revealed through hemlines, layers of
clothing and overall fashion through decades.
During the decade that was called the 'Roaring 20's', a new type of American woman was born
whose clothing screamed modernity. Post World War I, women suddenly gained the power of
freedom. After the 19th amendment which guaranteed women's suffrage was implemented in 1919,
the American woman no longer wanted to look older than her actual age – she soon catapulted and
now strived to achieve a younger look. Women could now get jobs which were previously reserved
to men. As a result, they were seen wearing more practical clothing – looser fitted garments and
dynamic silhouettes, thereby abandoning the previously prevalent uncomfortable and limiting
garments. The length of hair and hemlines of dresses slowly became shorter as women felt more
emancipated than ever before. The 'flapper' look became the most fashionable at the time, influenced
by music and film stars, but mostly by a period of prosperity following the Great War and before

Fashion Influence On American Culture
Throughout all of the different ages, fashion has gone through many dramatic changes, processes,
and styles. Garments would go from comfortable to restrictive, then switch back around again.
Sleeves would go from being added to being suddenly removed, to being put back again with a
totally different look. The styles changed so quickly that people had a difficult time finding out what
the newest fashion was before something else came out! One of the biggest factors of changing
styles is that fashion almost never influenced just one country; it influenced the world. The changes
in clothing effected all people, even of the lowest class, and fashion became one the most important
elements in the history of England's culture. Since the sixteenth

Along with its useful research ideologies of the American Social System and Women's fashion or

touch from other cultures. For example, the text brings up that when Paris couturier "openings" are
hosted each season, representatives from the "fashion industry" of America attend those events.
After that, designers from America adapt the fashion couture they see and incorporate it into the
American fashion industry (pg.127). Although, it goes far into talking about the price difference

simple descriptions of unknown and even well known fashion trends of the early, and mid 1900's.

it brings about the commercial side of the fashion industry, but my focus on that will be about how
certain brands came to be. It provides information about how certain fashion trends went from the
catwalk, to the sidewalk. This ties down and goes back to the idea about how fashion trends evolved
or become a movement.

The Influence Of Fashion Codes In American Beauty Culture
Photos of youthful, skinny ladies (and teens) are seen all over TV, magazines, social media sites and
even kids toys like Barbie and Ken, dolls and puppets. These pictures portray what the perfect
women should look like in American Beauty Culture. Society today has ladies (and teens) being
either skinny and starving or stout and full. I know numerous women, I included, who think they are
ugly in light of the width of their clothes. According to Fatema Mernissi in "Size 6: The Western
Women's Harem," she believes that the American fashion industry is controlled by men and is used
as a way to dictate "...what women should wear and how they should look" (278). This does not just
apply to women and teenage girls; this can be seen with the image being portrayed as the perfect
man and teenage boys.
In today's world, the lifestyle of a person is strongly influenced by the media culture who set the
trends. It should be noted that it is not something that is coerced on people but transpires due to peer
pressure and the urge of wanting to be considered beautiful by following the trends of the era. In this
paper, we will set a discourse concerning how dress codes of American women have been
profoundly influenced by the Fashion industry. From Mernissi's awful encounter with a saleslady in
a New York department store, we can see that the fashion industry has pushed a store to carry only
what they consider to be an average female size of 4 or 6. This is a problem that has invaded

Vanity Fair, A Popular Culture And Fashion Magazine
Famous actor Jennifer Aniston is the epitome of youth and success in today's pop culture. In
essence, she represents what all middle aged women should look like and what young women
should want to look like at the age of 46. She can be found in various advertisements for health and
beauty products, and with a personal Fountain of Youth and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
she is usually portrayed as an inspiration for women (and if she is not thought of this way, she can
definitely make a grown woman roll her eyes and scoff). For the past fifty years, advertisements
have laid down the laws and standards of recognizable beauty. Ads found in Vanity Fair, a popular
culture and fashion magazine which targets young–middle aged women, and InStyle, a Hollywood
fashion and celebrity trend magazine with a broad–aged audience of high–middle class women, will
be used to discuss points in Susan Bordo's "Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body" on beauty,
youthfulness, and addictions. An ad running in Vanity Fair is for a Chopard watch, but it also alludes
to an entire collection of jewelry called IMPERIALE. Posing in it, is Hilary Rhoda, who also
models in ads for companies such as Estée Lauder, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana, which are
companies known for their controversial advertisements. Portrayed as a goddess in this particular

Western clothing for women truly made its mark in Japan after World War II. The women began
wearing Western–style dresses, because they were less expensive and easier to care for than

fashion has dominated Japan: Men usually wear Western–style suits for work and out on the street.
They also wear Western clothes when going out or relaxing at home Fashion–conscious teenage
girls are fond of wearing pink and other super–feminine clothes whereas older women, being
brought in the workforce during the peak of Japan's bubble economy during the 1980's, have
become fond of luxury designer items and high fashion, which can sometimes be noted through the
suits they wear for work. Women who have high positions in global corporations usually wear
designer suits, the designer usually being either European or American. Japanese children in the city,
whose parents also wear Western clothes, wear Western clothes as well. They wear what normal
American children wear such as jeans, sweaters, etc. The elders still prefer to wear the kimono in
order to preserve tradition but more often than not, they opt to wear Western clothes because it takes
less of a hassle to put on Note: Although majority of Japan's population have started wearing

The World Is A Super Tool Essay
Today, the world is ever connected. The internet is a super tool that has brought the world together
while at the same time creating a gap between the haves and the have–nots. Consumer culture has
become an integral part of Western culture. Brands and companies have blurred the lines between
wants and needs. Advertising in such a way is aimed to bring more convince and options to the
consumer. In reality, this type of tactic is most beneficial to the corporation. What's more, practices
such as planned obsolescence further fuels the consumer cycle. Big business practices such as image
propagation, branding, and planned obsolescence has led to excess waste in the wake if today's
global consumer culture, one that is centered around profit. There are companies in today's global
market that rely on branding to sell goods. Clothing brands including Levi's and Abercrombie and
Fitch capitalize on the "Americanness" of the brand they have both worked to create. While these
brands may seem second nature to those living in the United States, abroad these brands ooze
American culture. Brands like Levi's and Abercrombie have created a relationship between its brand
and the culture from which it came. Abercrombie is essentially selling a brand that is hip to New
York Fashions. Levi's is selling to an audience that believes their jeans are better because they have
been created in the progressive city of sunny San Francisco, California. While in reality, these goods

one of the things that define her the most. Lady Gaga is an American singer–songwriter who is

and what people don't know is that of these fashions there are different communities and subcultures
of fashion that these people in the pictures conform to. Japan has a vast array of street fashion styles

fashion cultures vary from the tan skinned Ganguro girls to the victorian styled Lolitas. One of the
most popular and biggest Japanese fashion influencers were the high school girls of Kogyaru. What
exactly did these schoolgirls do to become one of the biggest trendsetters of Japan? The answers are
within their signature style, Japan's popular magazines, and ability to popularize certain products.

Hip Hop : A Culture Of Fashion
The term 'hip–hop' refers to a complex culture compromising of four elements: deejaying, rapping,
rhyming, graffiti painting, and b–boying. These elements incorporate hip–hop dance, style, and
attitude. "Hip–hop originated in the primarily African American economically depressed South
Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s" (Tate, pg.1). Hip–hop is a culture of fashion,
language, music, movement, visual art and expression. The genre of hip–hop comes with a very
significant history and evolution with its own heroes, legends, triumphs and downfalls. "Real" hip–
hop is often stressed in the 21st century due to what is being passed off as hip hop, and it is often
made clear that just because one takes a hip hop class, or listens to hip–hop music, does not mean
they conform to the true immersion of hip–hop culture. Therefore, "real" hip–hop encapsulates the
true essence of hip–hop culture, untarnished by impurities such as rapacious record labels, and
vapid, materialistic subject matter. Due to the background of how and where hip–hop first emerged,
the African American culture often feel responsible to protect what is for them, and to protect the
culture of hip–hop entirely. Boyd states that even though hip–hop as a culture was created as a social
movement, the "commercializaiton" of hip–hop demonstrated in film and media construes it to
another form of urbanization and popularity"(Boyd, 79). However, in the two movies being

Teenage Subcultures
Fashions it a Way of expressing freedom? Or is it an expression of rebellion?
This essay which I would explore is the subculture and expression of teenagers in the late 1950,s
known as mods and rockers. The Mods and Rockers rebelled to get recognised out from the crowd.
The problems are being seen around that period, with the subcultures in Britain, as teenagers wanted
to be different from their parent's way of fashion to partying and to get recognised. The conflict
included discussion on social norms but also symbolised fashion freedom. While the approach of the
groups may not have been ideal, due to the chaos caused by the two groups, many of them were
jailed. The fashion that distinguished each of the groups consisted of suits and smart dressing by the
mods, who were working class. Rockers style of dressing, jeans, and leather jackets informed as

government, establishments or regimes. It has also been utilised as a statement of liberty by those
oppressed by government, institutions or systems. Buxbaum discusses the idea of fashion as a
"social phenomenon" which links comprehensively to the Mods and Rockers phenomenon. This
period gave way to incredible advancement in fashion identity and the economy of fashion. It

How Fashion Professionals Are Inspired by History and Culture
How fashion professionals are inspired by history and culture?
It has long been claimed that fashion is a repetition of well–forgotten old. For centuries, designers
drew inspiration from ancient cultures and traditions, ancient civilizations, mythical gods and exotic
countries. Often the Greek goddesses, who have long manipulated the arts and war, intervened also
in fashion. For years the dresses are current, familiar from mythology and the movies with
mythological themes – naked shoulder, enchanting sets, lavish tale folds and embellishments of
gold.
Retro trends, which also inspired designers, recently make an impact and in their collections.

How Does Fashion Influence American Culture

Research Paper

Fashion
Who does not love fashion? Women have gone from wearing long, fancy dresses everyday to just
wearing casual clothes. Fashion also helps build confidence and shapes social status. Fashion has a
long history and has had a huge impact on American Culture. In 1907, women's dresses became less
constrained and tight. Dresses usually buttoned down the front, and the collar was turned down flat
(Sichel 58). In 1916, jumpers were also popular. They were usually made from knitted material and
they replaced blouses (59). Court dresses were very popular in the 20th century, with its low cut
collar. They were always framed. Ladies would also frequently wear feather decorations and gloves.
Long trains were attached to the gown by the shoulder and they were pleated. Women would also
wear capes with collars, usually made from silk or velvet. Sometimes, they were decorated with
sequins, embroidery, or even fur. Wedding dresses were usually white with satin or silk ... Show

It influences self confidence, if one isn't wearing what is "cool" or "popular" then they may feel
down upon or think less of themselves. It influences our self talk. It is important to have positive self
talk, and always be building one's self up, but if one isn't wearing what is "in" then they may bring
themselves down. Society has a set way certain people from certain groups should think, feel, act
and dress. This is called stereotypes. Usually when one is categorized in a certain stereotype then
he/she must act, dress etc the way the stereotype allows and if they don't people will look down
upon them, criticize or judge them. Another thing fashion influences is who one spends time with. If
one is not dressed a certain way then some people may not want to hang around them. People
shouldn't judge other people just on the way they dress, but how they act, what they do, and what

How Fashion Has Transform An Image
Fashion changes continuously, fashion can transform an image, as well as make a social statement.
Fashion is defined as the prevailing style or custom. Some people find fashion an art form, to others
it is a religion, for most everyday people fashion is a way of utilizing clothing and accessories to
show–off or hide something about ourselves (Nellis, 2015). The average person uses fashion to keep
their wardrobe up with the times. However we use or not use fashion, we are sending a statement.
This paper will include recollections of my past life regarding clothing, times clothing gave me
positive and negative feelings, I will also discuss people I look to for fashion direction, as well as
my comfort level with fashion and cultural norms.
My earliest recollection of my own clothing is a holiday dress I wore when I was four years old. It
was Christmas Day and I remember many members of my extended family visiting. My mother was
busy preparing dinner and attending to our guests. My dress was black velvet above the waist and a
white poufy material below the waist. I wore white socks and black patent leather shoes, my mother
curled my hair using sponge curlers. I remember playing cowboys and Indians with my brother, I
wore a holster on my hips with a gun over my dress and a cowboy hat. My memory recall me
chasing my brother around the dining room table and also shoot at our visitors. My mother always
referred to me as a "Tomboy", I suppose this is also my earliest recollection of

Fashion Is A Fashion For Last 75years
Fashion is a manner and style especially clothes, shoes, makeup and hairstyle. When I came from
my home country, I have not much knowledge about fashion, and even do not know more about
fashion brand. I was learning from technology, school and start follows American fashion. In
eighteen century, people were also very fashionable as we are mostly seeing in the old films and
pictures. The fashion was started from Europe and England because on that time Kings and Queens
were fashionable and spends money on luxury items. The Queen Elizabeth has famous because of
fashion and style, because she is wearing bright dresses, necklace etc. The brands we are use now a
day's also established in many years back like Coach is in the fashion for last 75years. Now a day's
fashion is change every spring, summer and fall because people are more creative to do something
different. Social media is the main source to develop the latest fashion between new generations.
People are follows facebook, twitter, instagram because celebrities, models, and companies share
their fashion with public. In the twenty century people have jobs and money that's why they start
spending on technology, and fashion, on the other side there are competition in the fashion industry
so it's difficult to compete it.
Women and Men both were fashionable from the thirties but women were more fashionable as

Celebrity Culture and Fashion Trends
Although celebrity culture is typically associated with actors and actress, consumers may also rely
on the trustfulness and credibility of politicians and first wives when deciding fashion trends. In the
1960s, fashion icon Jackie Kennedy took over the fashion industry (Joel 1). She appealed to many
stay–at–home women because she was commonly known to have a "sophisticated simplicity" (Joel
1) approach to fashion. Her successor, First Lady Michelle Obama has instantly become a fashion
icon herself as well. She is commonly seen wearing American designers therefore pushing "the
American fashion industry into the international spotlight" (Givhan 1). People are often so draw to
her style because it gives a glance into her personal life. As Givhan states, "Obama's clothes have
connected with the public in contemporary terms, in the language of Hollywood's glamour, Seventh
Avenue's bold entrepreneurship and the democracy of the mass market" (Givhan 1). In March 2009,
Michelle Obama appeared on the cover of US Vogue which showcased her "dress, style, and poise"
(Gibson 40). Brett Schenck, president of Hart Schaffner Marx states, "It's usually the frenzy behind
the first lady" (Jones), but in the some instances, President Obama has also made an impact on the
fashion industry. In the summer of 2009, designer Donatella Versace created a runway show that
was designed and dedicated to him. The clothes she created where inspired by President Obama
because it showcased "a relaxed man

Japanese Female Apparel Market For Japanese Women Essay
While the bubbly outfits with overflowing laces and floral patterns that highlight the soft and
sensitive characteristics once dominated the female apparel market in Japan, nowadays, Japanese
women prefer balancing out the femininity with some stylish mannish clothing. Figure 3, where the
woman matched her black lace dress and high heels with an olive–green military jacket, perfectly
exemplifies the chic "甘辛ミックスコーデ" (The sweet–and–sexy coordinates) adored by many
Japanese female consumers. The concept of "甘辛ミックス" is so well received in Japan because it
spices up the overall look with an exquisite aesthetic balance. Known for wanting to break away
from the mainstream, young Japanese female quickly adopted MA–1 jacket and the "girly–military
look" as a mean to expressive their individualism in contradiction to social norms. As a result, MA–
1 jacket has slowly become a wardrobe staple for Japanese young women.
Another significant aspect of MA–1 jacket that helps it secure its top–ranked position is its ability to
"casual down" a dressy outfit. Directly translated from the Japanese–made English word, カジュア
ルダウン, "casualing–down" coordinates means to dress–down, or to break down the formality of
fancy clothing (FASHION PRESS). A notable change in style has swept over Japan when people
began to embrace apparels that value both comfort and personal style. According to a survey
conducted by Jiratanatiteenun, Mizutani, Sato, Kitaguchi, and Kajiwara in 2011, "Casual [style] was

Jose Hendo Research Paper
This article by Colin Hancock and Heenali Patel, discusses how two women, Jose Hendo, Juliana
Nasasira, and Isabella Asiimwe, are trying to change Uganda's fashion industry by using tree bark as
a role in their clothing making. These two women have used a fabric called bark cloth, which came
from Uganda's trees from over 600 years ago. Jose Hendo, upcoming designer, thought this was a
great idea for her because she aimed to help in bringing back this ancient material trend from many
years ago. Although what these ladies are crafting are very beautiful fashion pieces, business is
going to be very harsh for them. Uganda is known as one of the poorest countries in the world.

This is a very unique process of creating fashion. The use of tree bark goes way back until 600 years
ago from an ancient culture. However, Uganda's fashion industry struggles a lot because this unique
clothing does come with a price. Many people who can actually afford these clothes are very rare
because Uganda's economy has very low income like many other countries in Africa. It also costs a
lot of money to even produce the material because you need workers to mass produce the items
which leads to money. Isabella Asiimwe came up with the idea of using Facebook as a gateway to
expanding the tree bark material styled clothing. This idea could help Isabella expand her profits
throughout not only Africa but maybe through Milan, the fashion capital of the world. This is a very
interesting topic because fashion is always known as cotton, polyester, and many synthetic
materials. Bark cloth is such a cultural material to use because you know it's handmade and worth
more because of its sense of being made by a natural resource. Therefore, many others will come to
buy this product because now a days, people are starting to get interested in the handmade things. I
strongly believe this is a very good step in helping to boost Uganda's fashion industry and maybe
their economy in the soon

1960's Mod Fashion Research
1960's Mod Fashion the Set Up For All Era's Following
The Mod fashion sense was the most popular style of the 60's. The Mod fashion trend may have
started in London, but it became extremely popular because of the new and innovative color combos
and new ways to look great. The Mod fashion world of the 60's was the most popular type of fashion
because the mod fashion was innovative, creative, bold and brash, the mod hairstyles were reacting
to 50's rocker style and 60's hippy culture, the style is all about sleek and slim designs.

To highlight beautiful features and eyes along with fake eyelashes girls would wear their hair in a
short but feminine style with bowl cuts, boy cuts and super angled bobs (Become Gorgeous). The
mod bob was a very romanticised figure of 60's fashion and all that came of that romanticised time
in history (Fashionising.com). Although the hair was shorter and a completely original move of the
60's women used the hair to compliment their features and to try the new creativity level of the era

the rocker culture of the 50s, and the 1960s hippy subculture. So it makes sense that, in their
reaction to the slicked–back rockabilly fashion of Elvis and co. and their loose long haired hippy

amazing mod hairstyles such as the beehive and sharp short crops (Hair and Makeup Artists

but it took special people such as Vidal to make the 60's mod look a complete success and its own
style. In conclusion, the style maybe a mash–up of eras but it is unique and original through the

Costume Styles In The 1970's
Humans date to historically dress back in 30000 BCE, mainly out of necessity for warmth in cold
places. However, you could still identify hierarchy within a group based on status symbols. If
coldness was not an issue, it can be implied that dress was used as a manner of decoration, like
Egyptians and African tribes. The way humans dress has changed drastically over the decades,
giving different connotations to each style and becoming a big part of our culture. The Oxford
English Dictionary (OED) defines costume as the style of clothing, hairdressing, and personal
adornment typical of a particular place, period, group, etc. With this definition we can define
"costume history" as the study and analysis of different costume styles over the decades. ... Show

It explains what, when and why styles has been worn. As events in history such as politics,
economy, social movements, wars, art, and music influenced most of the styles in history. Therefore,
it is very important to not only study it, but also understand it. It is for this reason that the 1970's
fashion era is my favorite. The 1970's were characterized by individuality and variety. The Vietnam
War and many social movements were big influences for the eccentric styles that characterized this
era. "Film and television were crucial influences on style for both men and women. The women's
liberation, gay rights, and "Black Power" movements all considered the importance of appearance in
the development and presentation of their respective agendas. Style tribes continued to develop as
both politics and music influenced the electric nature of fashion in this particularly politicized
decade." (cite) The 1970's remind me a little of what's going on today with fashion. Certainly, the
style is not the same, but today's fashion is mainly driven by the individuality of people and how
politics is affecting society, especially women. For example, the "Free the Nipple" movement has
broken the stigma of women having to wear bras to work, school and other

The look that many women were idolizing was starting to become more unrealistic. Because we are
constantly surrounded by the media, the average person is less confident about their body image.
Women criticize themselves everyday. Many develop what is called the "too" syndrome, in which
they think of themselves as being too short, too fat, having too much acne, etc. Due to the fashion
industry, there are more and more opportunities for women to compare themselves with others, and
it is a lot of pressure to think we have to keep up. The British Medical Association states that the gap
between the ideal body type and the reality is becoming wider and wider; The models are getting
skinnier while the rest of the world is getting heavier. The average woman is 5'4 and 140 lbs,
compared to the average model who is 5'11 and 117 lbs. This gap is creating less and less self
esteem is many women. The fashion industry is a major part of popular culture. Infinite amounts of
images of fashion models and celebrities are infused into popular culture. A study shows that the
men in multiple villages in Peru, many having little experience with popular culture, were shown
pictures of women of all different shapes and sizes. The results, which were published in the journal

This investigation will examine the influences of the anti–establishment movement, major events
like the sexual revolution and the how media and pop culture influences fashion in the 1960's. Every
decade has a signature look but the real question is how they got that look. To look further into this
subject one may need to investigate major happenings. This is what this paper looks into. The
greatest influences to fashion in the 1960's are analyzed in this paper. Each chapter goes into depth
on each influence and how it all relates back to fashion. Fashion is one way of self– portrayal and it
can define a time period and a person. The important part is to look into the behind the scenes aspect
of fashion and the cultural and social integration into the fashion industry.
By looking deeper into the subject I have concluded that fashion is influenced by the happenings of
a certain time period. Each time period has its own definitive style which is brought out through
fashion. It can be concluded that social and cultural influences are the driving force behind fashion
and how it is portrayed in each decade.

Cultural Influences On Consumer Behavior
Executive Summary
Demographic Subcultures
Consumers identify with many groups that share common characteristics and identities. These
groups that exist within a society are subcultures, and affiliation with them often gives marketers a
valuable clue about individuals' consumption decisions. An important part of the identity of these
subcultures is clothing. Consumers' feelings about their overall economic prospects, as well as the
state of mind consumers have about their own personal situation, otherwise known as consumer
confidence, helps to determine whether they will save their money, purchase goods and services, or
take on debt.

A consumer's lifestyle refers to how his or her tastes and values are reflected by consumption

Communicative and Symbolic Nature of Fashion
Fashion reflects how people define themselves as well as our society and our culture. It is
responsible for consumers changing their furniture, cars, wardrobes, and music. It is important to
keep in mind that fashion processes affect all types of cultural phenomena, including all types of
products, not just clothing and accessories.
Celebrity Endorsements in Fashion
For celebrity campaigns to be effective, the endorser must have a clear and popular image. In
addition, the celebrity's image and that of the product he or she endorses should be similar,
researchers refer to this as the match–up hypothesis.
Online Consumer Behavior
The Internet is transforming the way consumers interact with companies and with each other. Online
commerce allows us to locate obscure products from around the world, and consumption
communities provide forums for people to share opinions and product recommendations. The
benefits are accompanied by potential problems, including the loss of privacy.

The Environmental Impact Of The Fast Fashion Industry
Fashion is a clear reflection of the social, economic, political and cultural period. More and more
people are becoming concerned with their style and more importantly, how it affects their wallet.
This mindset has paved the way for the fast fashion industry to flourish. Fast fashion is "clothing
[being produced] at increasingly low prices, prices so low that many consumers consider this
clothing to be disposable... the clothing equivalent of fast food." (Claudio) Consumers are so caught
up on the fact that they are getting a bargain, that they totally disregard the uncomfortable reality
surrounding the dark side of mass–consumer fashion. The fast fashion industry has created a culture
of mindless consumerism.
One of the many things, people are unaware of, that is attached to fast fashion, is its environmental
impact. People are completely willing to turn a blind eye to the fact that this business is the second
most polluting industry in the world in order to be trendy. The first, and most obvious environmental
impact of the fashion industry is its pollution of water by the use of harmful, toxic chemicals, dyes,
and detergents. "The textile industry uses more than 8,000 [types of] chemicals annually," (Scott).
Some of which, are carcinogenic for both people and animals. In fact, the World Health
Organization reports that in China, polluted water causes 75 percent of diseases and over 100,000
deaths annually. This information about the materials used in their products is

As I thought about this, I realized that my friends and I all dress this way because it is what it "in

When I asked myself this question, I began to think about all of the ways mass marketing promotes
products to consumer 's. Most of these styles come from magazines, blogs and of course clothing
stores or online shopping. These producers put their products onto models and style them in which
consumer 's like and then want to buy. Fad language is terms used, mainly in today 's youth and if
you are on any social media you will frequently see the words: lit, ratchet, on fleek, such, sus, goals
af, ship, Netflix and chill and many more. These are words that most people use and eventually will
probably not be used after awhile. Leisure activities that are fads are hula hooping, twerking, go to
festivals, etc. A huge one is going to festivals such as Coachella, Hard Summer, EDM and many
others that are scattered across the world. This can also be called an activity fad. Popular culture on
women and men is what keeps popular culture going, but more specifically it is broken up into

Hip Hop Fashion Culture

  • 1. Hip Hop Fashion Culture For years, fashion has been a huge subculture of the hip hop industry. Emerging in the 1970s, hip hop was created to promote experimentation and innovative ways of self–expression. The fashion culture of hip hop, also referred to as "big fashion" or "street fashion, has consistently been complex throughout its many different eras and styles. While fashion in hip hop is not constricted to a specific trend or designs, it is well known for its overflow of different styles all influenced by vibrant African American and Latino youths from the urban city streets of New York City later followed by Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Detroit, Memphis, Virginia, Atlanta, St. Louis and others. Many inaccurately credit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the late 1980s, conscious rappers like KRS–One and Queen Latifah mostly fashioned colors of black, red, and green to pay homage to their African American ancestors. Dreadlocks, Kente cloth hats, and Africa chains were also famous trends of this era. During the early 1990s, a unique style of hip hop surfaced to popularity along with a new style of hip hop fashion as well. Pop rap artists like The Fresh Prince popularized baseball caps and neon colored clothing. TLC and Aaliyah emerged as deep iconic fashion influencers to female hip hop listeners. These women wore oversized pants and big flannel button ups coupled with sport bras to add their own touch of femininity to the male dominant industry. A pivotal moment in hip hop fashion was in 1984, when Michael Jordan signed a multimillion dollar sneaker contract with Nike Athletics. This sparked a surge of popularity in name brand sneakers and rap artists of all kinds were seen wearing the latest Jordan's at many events and in music videos. Reebok, Carhartt, Timberlands, Champion, and Fila were also popular brands associated with the hip hop style of that time. The sounds of hip hop then evolved into Gangsta Rap and artist such as N.W.A. influenced the gangsta street style, which mimicked the cholo style of the west coast. Rappers incorporated these trends with darker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Andy Sachs's Love For Fashion Andy Sachs, a young aspired journalist, seeking for a job finds herself employed by Runway Magazine, a fashion magazine as an Assistant to the Chief Editor. While initially accepting the position, Andy had to learn the details of the job and the culture of the business. However, Andy took on the challenge and felt that she could manage the hideous culture of fashion, behaviors, and attitudes of her coworkers in order to survive for at least a year until she finds a journalist position of her liking. The perception of people who involve themselves in this line of career, according to Benedictus (2009) are those that have a "love for fashion, that's why they're doing it. It's almost like a little bit of a social atmosphere when you come in every day. Like when girls go out at night and they see what each other is wearing. It's nice." But in Andy's case, she felt that it was just a job and the fashion was not her purpose for accepting the job at Runway. She initially did not buy into the culture of fashion and continued to report to work in her original dress code. As in any job there are credential job requirements. Andy had the educational background and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Andy continued to be viewed as a misfit for the company's culture as she did not behave, dress or own the designer fashion needed to blend in. What I have learned is that in the fashion industry such as the Runway, Benedictus (2009) mention in a Vogue article, a prerequisite of the job, is fashion. People would die to have the opportunity to work there. The work attire is crucial when the clothes of "what you wear is more important the job itself because if you came in looking like you were wearing something boring every day" you're not fit for the culture of the job (Benedictus, 2009). In Andy's case, she got the job without the prerequisite of the culture of fashion, which is very uncommon in this field of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Pop Cultural Fashion Statement: Native American Culture Pop Culture Report: Native American Fashion Statement In May of 2016, MAC Cosmetics released their new collection called the "vibe tribe" (Oliver 2016). Cleary the clothing line is inspired by Native American culture, even though the company denies it when there's attention brought to the subject. Some Native Americans do not find this collection offensive because to them, it's just make up. The problem is that their culture is being acknowledged as the inspiration. MAC cosmetics is only one of the many companies in the fashion industry that "borrows" from Native Americans and their cultural regalia. If make up gets away with cultural appropriation, then does that mean that other companies are ok to get away with it? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problems are: 1. Consumers may believe that is how Native Americans dress or how they represent themselves and 2. Constant misrepresentations to an existing, but dying culture leads to presenting the idea that Native Americans are just a trend, equipped with moscots. It may be safe to assume that most fashion companies are not checking with Native communities before using their culture to make a profit. The consumer doesn't realize that by buying these products, they are subtly saying that the company is not in the wrong. Actually they are unknowingly validating the company's decision to basically assume a culture for money. If people want to buy something representative of Native culture the consumer should by from a Native American designer, where it would be authentic as well as properly ... • 7. Japanese Culture Influence On American Fashion "Japanese culture definitely influences American fashion"– Jason Campbell. Japanese culture has influenced the world dramatically over time through acculturation. The advancements have greatly benefited the world in which they live. Not only in Japan, their culture has its examples across the globe. Japan, the land of the rising Sun, has influenced the world culturally the most through their innovations in three main industries: domestic and commercial transportation, war machines, and broadcasting. Japanese transportation has acculturated with other countries across the world. Automobiles such as Honda or Toyota are globally known. According to Beppi Corsariol's article, "Japanese cars are becoming the standard for quality, consistently topping the Consumer Reports and J.D. Power ratings. Toyota surpassed GM as the world's biggest car maker." Automobiles from Japan are increasing in popularity because of this and present great value to the consumer. Upon doing so, they would acculturate Japanese culture along with their own to ultimately win the war. Also, the World War II planes from Japan were some of the best of its time. According to militaryfactory.com, the Kawasaki Ki–78 was developed with the intention of challenging the world absolute speed record. • 9. Fashion Values In The Fashion Industry The current reality of clothing production, called fast fashion, is the industry standard of mass producing luxury styles in a matter of weeks. To do so, clothes are churned out quickly using poor quality materials. This is problematic because of the large amount of unnecessary environmental damage that this business model causes. The fashion industry should abandon the current trend of fast fashion and disposable clothing to decrease the amount of hazardous environmental waste created. The fashion industry should adopt slow fashion values that aim to cut excess consumer waste by changing the current societal norms around fashion buying and clothing disposal. Fast fashion has become the pinnacle of the fashion industry because it is very profitable. Cheap material and cheap overseas labor has made places like Walmart, Zara, and H&M twice as profitable as any retail store (Cline, "The Clothes Make the Movement", 21). The average American household spends one thousand and seven hundred dollars on apparel every year. One third of the average household expense is claimed by women aged sixteen and older who spend over five hundred dollars on clothing and shoes annually (Bureau of Labor Statistics). That dollar amount translates into an average of sixty–eight items of clothing and seven pairs of shoes per the average American (Cline, "The Clothes Make the Movement", 21). Cheap textile materials quickly fall apart, lose color and shape, and are replaced by new fashion trends. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Role Of Fashion In The 20th Century Throughout the 20th century, every decade experienced a new crisis. Along with a new crisis came the inevitable change in the ongoing fashion trends adopted by the women that were enmeshed in their own time. A woman's status and station in society affected the type of clothing choices deemed acceptable or expected of her. We shall take a deeper look at the history, which reveals how the role of the woman unfolds through popular clothing styles, as revealed through hemlines, layers of clothing and overall fashion through decades. During the decade that was called the 'Roaring 20's', a new type of American woman was born whose clothing screamed modernity. Post World War I, women suddenly gained the power of freedom. After the 19th amendment which guaranteed women's suffrage was implemented in 1919, the American woman no longer wanted to look older than her actual age – she soon catapulted and now strived to achieve a younger look. Women could now get jobs which were previously reserved to men. As a result, they were seen wearing more practical clothing – looser fitted garments and dynamic silhouettes, thereby abandoning the previously prevalent uncomfortable and limiting garments. The length of hair and hemlines of dresses slowly became shorter as women felt more emancipated than ever before. The 'flapper' look became the most fashionable at the time, influenced by music and film stars, but mostly by a period of prosperity following the Great War and before other major ... • 13. Fashion Influence On American Culture Throughout all of the different ages, fashion has gone through many dramatic changes, processes, and styles. Garments would go from comfortable to restrictive, then switch back around again. Sleeves would go from being added to being suddenly removed, to being put back again with a totally different look. The styles changed so quickly that people had a difficult time finding out what the newest fashion was before something else came out! One of the biggest factors of changing styles is that fashion almost never influenced just one country; it influenced the world. The changes in clothing effected all people, even of the lowest class, and fashion became one the most important elements in the history of England's culture. Since the sixteenth ... Women's clothes were practicing for a workplace; however, they have to still look cute and fashionable, so they would wear dresses, shirtwaist and skirts. Social Forces 31.2 (1952): 124–131. Print. Along with its useful research ideologies of the American Social System and Women's fashion or clothes, this source supports the idea that fashion trends in certain cultures get its influence and touch from other cultures. For example, the text brings up that when Paris couturier "openings" are hosted each season, representatives from the "fashion industry" of America attend those events. After that, designers from America adapt the fashion couture they see and incorporate it into the American fashion industry (pg.127). To say the least, it is a source used for simple descriptions of unknown and even well known fashion trends of the early, and mid 1900's. English, Bonnie. It also gives us a perception of the social influences of fashion. Along with that, it brings about the commercial side of the fashion industry, but my focus on that will be about how certain brands came to be. It provides information about how certain fashion trends went from the catwalk, to the sidewalk. This ties down and goes back to the idea about how fashion trends evolved or become a movement. • 19. The Influence Of Fashion Codes In American Beauty Culture Photos of youthful, skinny ladies (and teens) are seen all over TV, magazines, social media sites and even kids toys like Barbie and Ken, dolls and puppets. These pictures portray what the perfect women should look like in American Beauty Culture. Society today has ladies (and teens) being either skinny and starving or stout and full. I know numerous women, I included, who think they are ugly in light of the width of their clothes. According to Fatema Mernissi in "Size 6: The Western Women's Harem," she believes that the American fashion industry is controlled by men and is used as a way to dictate "...what women should wear and how they should look" (278). This does not just apply to women and teenage girls; this can be seen with the image being portrayed as the perfect man and teenage boys. In today's world, the lifestyle of a person is strongly influenced by the media culture who set the trends. It should be noted that it is not something that is coerced on people but transpires due to peer pressure and the urge of wanting to be considered beautiful by following the trends of the era. In this paper, we will set a discourse concerning how dress codes of American women have been profoundly influenced by the Fashion industry. From Mernissi's awful encounter with a saleslady in a New York department store, we can see that the fashion industry has pushed a store to carry only what they consider to be an average female size of 4 or 6. • 21. Vanity Fair, A Popular Culture And Fashion Magazine Famous actor Jennifer Aniston is the epitome of youth and success in today's pop culture. In essence, she represents what all middle aged women should look like and what young women should want to look like at the age of 46. She can be found in various advertisements for health and beauty products, and with a personal Fountain of Youth and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she is usually portrayed as an inspiration for women (and if she is not thought of this way, she can definitely make a grown woman roll her eyes and scoff). For the past fifty years, advertisements have laid down the laws and standards of recognizable beauty. The answers are within their signature style, Japan's popular magazines, and ability to popularize certain products. Kogyaru style was started by and became very popular among high school girls. • 35. Hip Hop : A Culture Of Fashion The term 'hip–hop' refers to a complex culture compromising of four elements: deejaying, rapping, rhyming, graffiti painting, and b–boying. These elements incorporate hip–hop dance, style, and attitude. "Hip–hop originated in the primarily African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s" (Tate, pg.1). Hip–hop is a culture of fashion, language, music, movement, visual art and expression. The genre of hip–hop comes with a very significant history and evolution with its own heroes, legends, triumphs and downfalls. "Real" hip– hop is often stressed in the 21st century due to what is being passed off as hip hop, and it is often made clear that just because one takes a hip hop class, or listens to hip–hop music, does not mean they conform to the true immersion of hip–hop culture. Therefore, "real" hip–hop encapsulates the true essence of hip–hop culture, untarnished by impurities such as rapacious record labels, and vapid, materialistic subject matter. Due to the background of how and where hip–hop first emerged, the African American culture often feel responsible to protect what is for them, and to protect the culture of hip–hop entirely. Boyd states that even though hip–hop as a culture was created as a social movement, the "commercializaiton" of hip–hop demonstrated in film and media construes it to another form of urbanization and popularity"(Boyd, 79). This essay which I would explore is the subculture and expression of teenagers in the late 1950,s known as mods and rockers. The Mods and Rockers rebelled to get recognised out from the crowd. The problems are being seen around that period, with the subcultures in Britain, as teenagers wanted to be different from their parent's way of fashion to partying and to get recognised. The conflict included discussion on social norms but also symbolised fashion freedom. While the approach of the groups may not have been ideal, due to the chaos caused by the two groups, many of them were jailed. The fashion that distinguished each of the groups consisted of suits and smart dressing by the mods, who were working class. Rockers style of dressing, jeans, and leather jackets informed as down market conversely, it has also been utilised as a statement of freedom by those oppressed by government, establishments or regimes. It has also been utilised as a statement of liberty by those oppressed by government, institutions or systems. Buxbaum discusses the idea of fashion as a "social phenomenon" which links comprehensively to the Mods and Rockers phenomenon. Japanese Female Apparel Market For Japanese Women Essay While the bubbly outfits with overflowing laces and floral patterns that highlight the soft and sensitive characteristics once dominated the female apparel market in Japan, nowadays, Japanese women prefer balancing out the femininity with some stylish mannish clothing. Figure 3, where the woman matched her black lace dress and high heels with an olive–green military jacket, perfectly exemplifies the chic "甘辛ミックスコーデ" (The sweet–and–sexy coordinates) adored by many Japanese female consumers.
