Example Of Syntactical Ambiguity
4. CLARITY. In order for our writing to be clear there are some common discursive elements that
the user must avoid. Some of those elements have relevance in writing but they would only confuse
the reader in smaller work. As the Style Guide for The Economist states: "Clarity of writing usually
follows clarity of thought". Clarity conveys readers comprehending our message effortlessly;
writing properly involves successful communication.
Examples:
*The horse raced past the barn fell.
✓The horse which was raced past the barn fell. (Pinker, 2014) *As linguist Geoffrey Pullum has
noted, sometimes the passive voice is necessary. (Pinker, 2014)

An implement with a handle and solid surface, typically of wood, used for hitting the ball in game
such as cricket, baseball and table tennis. (Oxford Dictionary)
2. A nocturnal capable of sustained flight. (Oxford Dictionary) Best choice: John has a bat to play
baseball.
4.3.2 SYNTACTICAL The syntactical ambiguity is when words can be interconnected into more
than one tree. It must be avoid as much as possible. Example: The French teacher speaks very fast
We find two interpretations:
1. The teacher that teaches French
2. The teacher from France
Best choice: The teacher that teach French speaks very fast  Does the text contain any ambiguity?
If it does, substitute it with another word or phrase.
4.4 HEDGING The heading is usually used by the writer, in order to distance their opinion from the
text and avoid responsibility for mistake. Words such as: almost, apparently, comparatively, fairly, in
part, nearly, partially, predominantly, presumably, rather, relatively, seemingly, so to speak,
somewhat, sort of, to a certain degree, to some extent, and the ubiquitous I would argue (Pinker,
2014) are considered as if the author is hiding their true intention and it shows the author´s lack of

Significance And Innovation Of The Proposed Research
Significance and innovation of the proposed research The use and comprehension of the passive
sentence structure is the subject of much debate in the field of psycholinguistics. There have been
many studies conducted addressing the issue of why passive sentence structures are so underused as
compared to active sentence structures in children. Several studies have tried to show that passive
sentence structures can actually be elicited through structural priming, or more generally being more
exposed to that specific type of sentence. Although plenty of research as been conducted examining
the P600 response in reference to various types of syntactical anomalies, I could not find one study
that was specifically focused on the priming of passive sentence structures, even though it is said
that the P600 should respond to this specific sentence structure. Therefore, the proposed study will
contribute to the field of psycholinguistics by examining the P600 response of children using the
structural priming paradigm. Based on the results of the study, the study may also be able to
determine if the P600 response could serve as an adequate neural marker for the effectiveness of
passive voice structural priming.
Study design The proposed study will make use of the structural priming paradigm used in previous
studies (Gámez & Shimpi, 2015; Vasilyeva, Waterfall, Gámez, Gómez, Bowers, & Shimpi, 2010), as
well as the measurement of event–related potentials. Participants are to be randomly

The Career Of A Singing Career
There are many careers someone can choose based on personal preference and hobbies. One of the
best jobs is a singing career. The reason for this choice of career is that it can be very rewarding. We
all have some big name star that pops into our head when we hear the word "singer". Maybe it is
Beyonce or Justin Bieber, depending on personal music type. Singing is a way to express how you
feel through songs when words can't.
Careers come in a variety of forms and many have complex jobs. A singing career is a pretty straight
forward job, at first glance. There are many different jobs that someone in this career path has to do
on a day to day basis. First, writing music and lyrics. Before a singer can start on a career they need
a plan, so in singing it isn't a good idea to just jump right in without some music. This can either be
an original music piece or a covers of another artist's songs. Second is having to perform for crowds
and other groups. If a singer wants to gain recognition and fame, they need to perform for others.

The earnings make have to do with how much merchandise such as t–shirts and cds are sold at a
concert. Another way to earn money in this career is tips. These can be during starting years as well
as when the singer gains popularity. Another thing that plays a big part in how much money a singer
will earn yearly is how many shows they perform at or if they volunteer at different places that will
allow them to get some extra money. The singer won't be able to keep all the money they earn
because if they are apart of a contract, some of that money will go to the rest of the group. Plus, if at
anytime they choose to play an instrument like for instance, a guitar, they are going to need to buy
equipment to help them perform like microphones and the stands, monitors, and compact disks

The Role Of the Castrati in the Baroque Era
The Role Of the Castrati in the Baroque Era
When it comes to music history, the Castrati are one of the most important and debated topics. The
Castrati were men (in Italian opera) that had been castrated during puberty to stop a flow of
hormones, causing them to have the voice of a soprano woman, but the vocal power of an older,
full–grown man. A general estimate said that four thousand boys a year were castrated in Italy. Some
Castrati tried to make it in church choirs (which often gave them almost nothing of monetary value),
most chose the opera route. They reigned supreme when they got onstage, being the obvious star of
the show. They were the master performers that drew the crowd in with their amazing voices.
During the Baroque ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though he was a soprano, he also had an amazingly clear lower register, where a tenor would
most likely be comfortable. Farinelli showed off all the sweetness of his voice wherever he traveled
and was rewarded with roars of applause. During this period of time, he did no wrong. He was
famous beyond belief, a formidable performer, and had honors upon honors. One of his most
famous performances involved him having a duet with a trumpet that turned into a duel. Porpora,
who was his teacher, spoke about the event: "During the run of an opera there was a struggle every
night between Farinelli and a famous player on the trumpet [...] After severally swelling a note in
which each manifested the power of his lungs and tried to rival the other in brilliancy and force, they
had both a swell and shake together, by thirds, which was continued so long [...] that both seemed
exhausted; and, in fact, the trumpeter, wholly spent, gave it up, thinking, however, his antagonist as
much tired as himself [...]; when Farinelli, with a smile on his countenance, showing that he had
only been sporting with him all that time, broke out all at once in the same breath, with fresh vigor,
and not only swelled and shook the note, but ran the most rapid and difficult divisions and was at
last silenced only by the acclamations of the audience. From this period may be dated the superiority
which he ever maintained over all his contemporaries."

Head and Neck Essay
Common head and neck surgery includes the removal of the voice box: largyngectomy and
tracheostomy: making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck and opening an airway through
an incision in the trachea. The removal of the larynx occurs in cases of laryngeal cancer and in this
case the airway is separated from the mouth, nose and oesophagus meaning that the patient will
breathe through a stoma in the neck. In tracheostomy cases the resulting stoma can act as an airway
and a tracheotomy tube is inserted, enabling the individual to breathe without the use of their nose
and mouth.
Tracheostomys may be required for long term control of excessive bronchial secretions, particularly
in those with reduced consciousness or to maintain an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that air does not pass through the vocal cords and so speech is not possible. Sometimes
patients can have a tracheostomy tube that allows some air to go through the vocal chords and out of
the mouth. Patients can have this type of tube if they are able to swallow without difficulty and if
they do not need a tracheostomy tube with an inflated cuff in order to get air into the lungs.
The last option is surgical voice restoration which was introduced by Singer & Blom in
1980(Blom,1995) Not all patients are suitable for this however, It involves a tracheoesophageal
speaking valve, a small fistula is surgically created through the tracheal wall into the oesophagus. A
small, one way valve is inserted into the fistula and it allows air to be shunted from the trachea to
the oesophagus and up through the pharyngo–oesophageal segment creating an acoustic wave form
and voice. A longer flow of voice can be achieved as pulmonary air is used as the initiator for voice.
Another problem that arises in head and neck patients is that of malnutrition and weight loss. They
are particularly at risk of developing nutritional problems. Many patients with head and neck cancer
have histories of high alcohol intake, tobacco use and poor dietary habits. Malnutrition often when
alcohol is involved. Patients nutritional needs should be assessed and patients at high risk of

Literary Devices In Catcher In The Rye
The world of adults is full of phonies and the only way to combat it is to be as innocent as a child.
Today, people have become so self–interested that they fail to listen to everyone – even themselves.
These are the points J.D. Salinger brings up in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. Throughout the
novel, J.D. Salinger's uses of voice, conflict, aposiopesis, irony, and metaphor emphasize these
points. The Catcher in the Rye is a story of a battle to preserve innocence.
The Catcher in the Rye follows the adventures of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden
has changed schools several times over the past years – because he either failed all his classes or
harbored strong feelings of hate and disgust towards his school. Holden, during the book's events, is
16 years old, quite tall, and already has some gray hair. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Holden coins this phrase for himself based on a poem that he heard during events that that occurred
before the events of the book. This poem is called Coming thro' the Rye by Robert Burns. The irony
between the poem and the novel begins with the two different interpretations of "a catcher in the
rye". Holden says that he sees himself "catch[ing] everybody [children] if they start to go over the
cliff. . . I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all" (Salinger ). Holden believes that being a "catcher in
the rye" involves protecting and preserving the innocence of the children around him. However, the
poem Holden gets this interpretation from is interpreted by most to not be about innocence, but
rather casual sex. Holden now seems to understand how disgusting and phony sexuality and
adulthood is. Holden wants to save children from the horrors that come with growing up, but the
irony lies in Holden basing his own beliefs on a poem about sex. Salinger's deviation from the
traditional meaning of Robert Burns' poem gives interesting irony that both shows how mature and
naïve Holden really

An Analysis Of Christine Lebay's Christine
Christine is a novel about a 17 year old named, Arnold ''Arnie'' Cunningham, who bought a red and
white 1958 Plymouth Fury from a retired war–veteran named, Roland D. LeBay, for $250. The 1958
Plymouth Fury, Christine, is possessed by supernatural forces that would kill anything that comes
between her and Arnie Cunningham. Arnie becomes so obsessed with the car that he quits high
school before he even finishes. He ends up forgetting about his friend Dennis Guilder, his family,
and his girlfriend because he has his mind only set on the car itself. Bullies at the high school tried
to destroy Arnie's car, but before they could get away with it, they were all killed by the car, and
even the garage owner was killed by getting crushed between the seat and the steering wheel.
Dennis had to stop Christine from killing Arnie's girlfriend by smashing, ramming, stabbing with the

I Attended The Temple College Vocal Point Concert
I attended the Temple College Vocal Point concert on November 1, 2016 at 12:30 pm in the
Jackson–Graeter Backstage Theatre. The Theatre, located in the Mary Alice Marshal Performing
Arts Center, at Temple College is small, seating approximately 100 people. Since the setting is
quaint, it makes for a personal experience, allowing the audience to truly see and hear the
entertainers character. The stage size also has a downside, at times the actors would trip over each
other while dancing. The Vocal Point concert titled From Rent to Now: The last 20 Years of
Broadway: is directed by Dr. Sara Baker. This Contemporary Broadway show consists of sixteen
characters. It is a spoof on musicals. The opening scene played by Trey Shonkwiler and Konnor
Widmann was funny, and catchy. They sang A Musical from Something Rotten! Shonkwiler is a
Tenor, while Widmann is a Baritone. Together they made beautiful harmonies, they complimented
each other vocally, and as actors very well. The next song Mama Who Bore Me from Spring
Awakening was sung by all the women, with a soloist. Kristen Garth has a lovely alto voice, her
performance was unconfident, and a bit nervous, she had a few notes that were flat, overall it was
nice. There were a few moments where the background singers were too loud, overpowering the
soloist. When He Sees Me, from Waitress, sung by Kris Glorsorio was wonderful. She has a
beautiful Alto/ Mezzo voice. She connected wholly with her character, I thought the balance of head

All City Choir Essay
There's a bigger song emerging from the music wing this year, but even though the women's choir
has more than doubled from the 36 girls in the fall of 2012 to the 82 girls enrolled this fall, choir
director Elliot Kranz said that teaching that many girls at one time isn't any different than teaching
any other ensemble. There are just more girls. He said he believes there are a number of reasons for
such an increase in numbers in the group. One is because of the success of the women's choir in the
past. The All City Choir event including secondary students is also a reason students are motivated
to to do choir after seeing the CFHS choir perform. The two junior highs have very strong choir

"Any time you add numbers, it makes it more difficult to sing in tune and sound like one voice. But
we work on this from day one in rehearsal, and hopefully our hard work pays off throughout the

that the choir will keep increasing every year. Junior Anna Stillman said she thinks it's awesome to
have so many girls in the choir and they are starting to sing very well as a group, although at times it
is hard to have a good balance of sound with so many voices at one time. "It can be distracting at
times. I love choir, and when other people continue to talk while we are trying to sing and learn new
pieces, it can be distracting." But in the long run, Stillman also said she thinks that having more girls
in choir will make them better as a whole because they have a lot of strong upperclassmen singers
and some very talented sophomores with good voices coming to help them out. Stillman chose to
take choir again this year because, "I've always really enjoyed singing and did it in junior high for
two years and decided to try it again in the high school, and I'm so happy I did. It's been so much
fun, and Mr. Kranz is a great

Parts of an Opera: The Singers and Structure
Considering the many parts of an opera, it's no wonder that people often get confused–––the genre
stretches back to the very end of the 16th century and has changed dramatically over time. From
lyric sopranos to basso profundos, we've put together a guide to the types of vocalists you would
probably see at the opera today, paired with famous roles featuring those voice types.
We also included a quick overview of the structural parts of an opera–––the overture, arias,
recitatives, and chorus numbers are all included. We hope you feel right at home the next time you
visit the opera!

Historically, the baritone most often fills a comedic role and can also play heroic parts that
complement the tenor. Baritone voices are warm and rich–––think of a cello in the string family.
The Toreador Song from Carmen's Bizet is a famous example of the baritone voice, and Nabucco
and MacBeth are also well–known operas for baritone.
The Bass Voice
At last we come to the bass voice–––the anchor of the vocal family. The bass in an opera rarely
enjoys heroism or much of a love life, since composers prefer to give basses the role of a villain. A
voice is generally considered a bass when it reaches the second E below middle C.
As with the other voice types, the bass voice is divided into subgroups. Basso Cantante refers to a
"singing" bass voice, while the Basso Profundo is the lowest and deepest of the basses. Basso Buffo,
or the "humorous" bass, and the hoher (high) bass round out the family.
Famous bass roles include Duke Bluebeard from Bluebeard's Castle(Bartok), Gounod's
Mephistopheles from Faust, and the title role of Don Giovanni by Mozart. As you have probably
guessed, Wagner wrote significant Basso Profundo roles into his Ring Cycle.

All The Bright Places By Jennifer Niven
'All The Bright Places' by Jennifer Niven
1. Making Personal Connections.
'All The Bright Places' is a story about love and depression, where a boy, Finch, helps Violet find the
will to live, while he has trouble keeping his head above water. My family has gone through the
stress, anger and sadness of depression, too: my cousin, Mitch, committed suicide by hanging
himself. Although it has been two years, the pain has still not completely gone away.
Violet Markey has lost her older sister (and best friend) in a fatal car crash on an icy bridge. She is
overwhelmed by guilt, as she was the one who begged her sister to take her home, and told her to
take the shortcut, ultimately leading to Eleanor's death. When this happens, she loses friends and is
afraid to make any, afraid she will lose them too. After losing Mitch, I also lost my Nana and Papa
(grandmother and grandfather). My cousin, Dimity had bowel cancer and although she is alive and
well now, it is still scary to think how close we were to losing her. This made me realize, unlike
other people my age, how close death is in our everyday lives, and, unlike cartoon character, we
cannot peel ourselves from the rubble and complete our quest or journey. Losing some of the major
people in my life has, just like Violet, made me scared to let go of people and even more scared of
letting them into my heart. However, just like with Violet, her friends help her world to grow.

Meursault's Indifference in The Stranger, by Albert Camus
In The Stranger, Albert Camus allows the main character to tell the story in order to give the reader
an experience of his own. Obviously, with a novel also comes language, which Camus incorporates
cleverly as a way to indirectly illustrate Meursault's thoughts about certain situations. Although the
novel represents a postmodern setting, the author shifts the overall meaning. In The Stranger, Camus
applies a unique literary style as a power that deflects blame from Meursault, the antiheroic
character. In order to disclaim the fault of Meursault, Camus incorporates several instances in which
he leaves a greater sense of authority to nonliving objects, while further drawing attention away
from the main character. Based on the implication of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, he covers the Arab's intentions when talking about the same blade that persists in
bringing Meursault pain. He describes the stabbing as a "scorching blade [that] slashes at [his]
eyelashes and stabs at [his] stinging eyes" (59). The moment that the blade brings itself to
Meursault's face and slashes at his eyelashes, of course, is the point at which Meursault
acknowledges that everything is beginning to reel. Finally, under the influence of the sea's fiery
breath and the sun's scorching attitude, Meursault admits that "the trigger gave" when reminiscing
on the death of the Arab (59). Not until after he blames the trigger for the mishap does he use first
person to describe the negative actions, as he shoots the Arab four more times. At this point,
perhaps, he realizes his own fault within the situation as he continues to set himself in place for the
remainder of part one. The simple sentences in The Stranger reveal Meursault's emotional
detachment from society, while the more complex sentences are assigned to objects with authority.
Throughout the entire novel, Meursault's simplicity and disinterest in the world can be identified
with the incorporation of his simple statements. Especially in this particular passage, Meursault
finds it unimportant to challenge himself in a way that makes sense. Although Meursault recognizes

A Career As A Career In The Music Industry
The process to become a professional singer would have to start when you're young, because it takes
time to actually learn music and to build your voice. Most cited researches I have looked up reported
that many professional singers today usually have begin their training of practicing who they are at a
young age. Singing opportunities can come from anywhere, such as being in a play at school. It's
important for singers to develop a variety of styles. It's good to know more than one type of music
now and days for a better position in the music industry. For instance both popular and classical
styles should be considered because employment opportunities exist in each. To get better results for
your outcome most people would consider enrolling in a formal training program. Once you've
reached your unique voice, continue the process and look for professional singing opportunities. To
get taken seriously you should build up your professional representation and perform as much as
possible. Musicians typically advance in their careers by seeking an audience for their craft. While
performance opportunities may be offered all over the country, it's noted that many musicians
relocate to hub cities for the entertainment industry like New York, Los Angeles, Nashville or
Chicago. These states are typically where you would find a famous singer or musicians that you can
reflect on and learn from in your experience of making your career a success. For me after this step
would be to go to either University of Houston or Juilliard. Colleges and universities may offer
numerous performing opportunities. In addition to choral ensembles and formal recitals and shows,
performing in placing that will allow you to sing or local singing opportunities may be beneficial for
a beginner. Singers can audition for concerts and theatrical performances to build their vocal skills.
Make sure to take advantage of school opportunities as while. Many schools with music and vocal
degree programs have resources such as studios, practice rooms or reference libraries that will allow
you to exercise and practice on your craft of music. When looking for a music or vocal performance
degree program usually you will need to audition get excepted. While

I also prepared my arguments beforehand. I then supported each of my claims or claims by solid
arguments based on factual and objective.
However, I made several mistakes. First of all, I argued the age of Sally Soprano. This was a tactical
error and was decreased the esteem my interlocutor had for me. I could find something more
convincing.
The process to start with was quite integrative with both sides laying out their priorities and what
their limitation were. However, in between we reached an impasse with both sides not agreeing with
each other. We set the anchor at 16,000 and then Anna came back with a bid of 65K plus 5% of gate.
We said that was too high and said that was way off industry norms. We countered with 19 K. She

which we did not. She offered 55K + 5 % of gate. We said we could do 24k but no gate collection.

A Raisin The Sun And Willy Loman Compare And Contrast Essay
The striving for being rich and have a wealthy life has always been present in the American society.
Often living in a capitalistic society leads people to become greedy, and as a result many become too
materialistic. This may happen because of the challenge to pursue the American dream where most
of Americans are trying to fulfill it. Unfortunately, for most of people it is very difficult to acquire
this high status and to secure a spot in the upper–class society. Arthur Miller's, Death of a Salesman,
and Lorraine Hansberry's, A Raisin the Sun, are two plays that reveal two main characters: Willy
Loman and Walter Lee Young, characters that reflect typical features of the people who struggles to
achieve the American Dream. Although they may have common characteristics and share
similarities, they also have numerous issues and are very different, setting them apart from other
families and even each other. Therefore, the main focus of this paper will be to compare and put in
contrast these two great characters. In both plays, A Raisin the Sun and Death of a Salesman, the
father (Walter and Willy) is the main individual that holds his attention throughout the plays.
Because of their roles are often changing in the plays, Walter and Willy can be the protagonist and
the antagonist. That being said, they both have goals to possess their own business and to be their
own boss. They both strive to live wealthy. As Walter says "No...It was always money, Mama. We
just didn't know about it" (Hansberry). This reveals that Walter is more materialistic instead of
considering the feeling of his family.
Willy and Walter are very similar in many ways. For instance, they both are trying to be good
fathers. Walter's goal to get rich is influenced by his restless desire to offer to his family a better life:
"You tired, ain't you? Tired of everything. Me, the boy, the way we live–this beat–up hole–
everything. Ain't you?" (Discovering Literature, 1295). Meanwhile, the love that Willy has for his
sons is undeniable. Very often he would slip into the past before he drifted apart from his sons:
"Remarkable. Remember those days? The way Biff used to simonize that car? The dealer refused to

Literary Differences In Kissing The Witch By Emma Donoghue
Nobody made me do the things I did, nobody scolded me, nobody punished me but me. The shrill
voices were all inside. Do this, do that, you lazy heap of dirt" (2). Coming from the first passage of
Emma Donoghue's Kissing the Witch sets a revision of popular fairy tales whereas internal voices,
seen as personal experience, and their comparison to external voices, seen as societal expectations,
create places where these stories change. This shift can be seen as a move away from the original
well known story or aspects of that particular story, while also representing a change in the narrator
of the story itself.
The passage above for instance occurs when a cinderella type character is introduced to the reader.
These internal voices are normally associated with the external voices of the evil stepmother and
stepdaughters, which is associated widely with a common thread within the cinderella story itself.
This revision flips what is normally seen as an external voice and internalizes it. A few pages later
we see the girl and her interaction with the prince after he proposes marriage. "The voices were
shrieking, Yes yes yes say yes before you lose your chance you bag of nothingness. I opened my
teeth but no sound came out" (7). While the passage above set up the idea of internal voices, this
passage shows how this internalized external voice is not the voice of the cinderella type narrator.
Not only does this completely rewrite what is considered the normal ending for the

"Graphic serve as a universal language" said by Brucker (2002). There are many advantages of

operation manual looks like a cheap heater or a fan operation manual. It used black and white color
which shows bad quality pictures, and the pictures are also very small to see. Moreover, it seem like
the writers want to used less pictures as possible to describes the operational function, which is
definitely too little to understand. (See appendix D).
On the other hand, compare with O2 mobile phone operational manual (see appendix E) which also

1)Is there a larger theme within the movie? Explain...
Various themes such as idealism, abandonment and violence and brought up throughout the film and
demonstrate a majority of plot surrounding the many controversial moments/scenarios. I go more
into this themes down below.
–Idealism
The narrator as well as Quijana both have split personalities which they rely upon for their idealistic
thinking which it portrayed in the overall motif of the film

Both Tyler and the narrator suffer and struggle to determine a purpose for themselves, also trying to
figure out their problems and why they don't fit in.

This movie is seen to be wonky at some points and normal at times. As it isn't to far fetch for these
type of things to actually happen within the community and person to person. As these fight clubs
have gotten lots of attention in the media and are apparently a big thing in the southern states of
America.
9) Discuss the nature of power/relationships within the film, between director/ film maker and
actions– why were they chosen?
The relationship between the characters and nature are seen to be very reluctant. As the characters
are very "to them self's" and are often trying to avoid other and tell lies to get out of of having to
communicate in details, their problems! The alter ego effect is evident to have been important
because it shows us both sides of good and evil within a regular human being. I think these
characters played their roles very well, and would not suggest anyone else to take their role(s).

Voice In Frank Mccourt's Teacher Man By Frank Mccourt
Frank McCourt's "teacher man" written in 2005 is a mind opening memoir. With an extraordinary
writing style McCourt shows his readers the other side of teaching. The voice is one of the most
powerful instruments human beings have. Everyone uses it differently and that's how it makes us
unique. An authors voice his his biggest weapon, it makes the author and his book unique and
McCourts writing style is different to most of other memoirs. He isn't very fond of punctuation but
it's not that, that makes his voice so unique. He changes his voice throughout the book and has
different voice types for certain characters in the book. His unmistakeable voice in the memoir
makes you feel his pain, happiness and losses. This essay will focus on McCourts voice in the
memoir. How he uses it to make the reader feel certain things and guide us in certain directions.

1. Do a search and find at least three (3) different definitions of literacy and/or descriptions of types
of literacy. Only one may come from a dictionary. These must be significantly different from one
another. List these here with sources properly cited (APA).
Literacy has several definitions. It is defined as "the ability to read and write" (Literacy, 2015, para.
1), and knowledge relating to a certain subject (Literacy, 2015). In academic terms, literacy is
defined as the proficient ability to read and construct meaning out of literature and content in school
(Torgesen et al., 2007 as cited in Correction to: Literacy, 2016). Whitehurst and Lonigan (1998)
define emergent literacy claiming, "early literacy was used to refer to the conceptual knowledge and
skills that are developmental precursors to formal literacy" (Whitehurst & Lonigan, 1998, p. 608 as
cited in Chan, 2015). On the other hand, Lytle and Wolfe (1989) define literacy through four
metaphors: literacy as tasks, reflection, practices, and skills (as cited in Walter, 1999). Digital
literacy is defined as the ability to utilize new media and the Internet as a means to connect and to
critically evaluate various kinds of digital

Anthony Walton Character Analysis
A chorus is defined by Merriam Webster's Dictionary as,¨something performed, sung, or uttered
simultaneously or unanimously by a number of persons.¨ The idea behind a chorus is that all of
these voices, when used together, can make a much more beautiful work of art. The use of different
pitches and tones within this chorus creates music with depth and more emotion. However, for
Anthony Walton, a chorus has a slightly different meaning. Within his narrative, Mississippi, he
allocates an entire chapter to the idea of a chorus; many things working together to accomplish one
goal. This goal isn't to create a more beautiful piece of music, but instead to deconstruct our
understanding of Mississippi as we know it and show us its true realities. Walton ... Show more

Speaking in an incorrect pitch, volume, or with poor placement may be even more damaging to the
larynx than singing because people speak more than they sing. In most cases, the problems include
speaking in a pitch that is focused in the throat. While serious problems in this area are best resolved
with the help of a licensed voice therapist, the singer can make some changes based on experience
with their preferred placement when singing. Misconceptions include the idea that speaking very
softly or whispering will help save voice. People who speak softly do so by blowing breath through
the tone stopping the glottis from closing completely. Since the glottis' function is to close, it may
compensate with a time of no closure by creating an edema or swelling to fill up the empty space
(Greschner, 2017). Therefore, the singer who thinks they are protecting or reserving the voice may
be creating a bigger problem threatening their vocal health. In addition, whispering is often focused
in the throat. This may be particularly true when speaking on the phone or in situations they may not
want to be overheard. In such cases it may be necessary to raise the volume of the speaking voice in
order to raise the focus or

How Human Memory Is Unreliable Due For Memory Distortion...
Proximity Analysis of Psychology Popular Articles
No one is born to a genius. I do not believe in instant success, especially in writing. Most of the time
when I finished writing essays, I felt satisfied with what I wrote. I rarely try to go back and improve
my own writings. The Unreliability of Human Memory is an analytical essay from my Workload
57S class. This paper is about how human memory is unreliable due to memory distortion and
changes from other influences. By rereading an essay that I wrote before, I analyzed and learned
about how efficient did I write in a particular genre. For this analytical essay about the human brain,
I would categorize it as a scientific popular article with the emphasis on psychology. Although it
might not perfectly fit the genre, it helped me get to understand my grammatical choices and
rhetorical styles for improving on writing.
In order to analyze my essay, I made a chart that summarizes my grammar patterns and writing
styles based on some practices from Dana Ferris's book, "Language Power." One interesting finding
is that I heavily relied on using subordinating conjunctions. About 47% of my sentences used
conjunctions to combine clauses. In addition, I used 4 passive sentences out of 55 total sentences. In
her book, Ferris states, "passive voice can emphasize information or deemphasize the actor" (Ferris,
110). Passive sentences frown on in most genres, but it can also be common in scientific writings.
Lastly, my essay used a

Active Voice
Voice:
In simple words, Voice (in other words (but rarely said) is also called, diathesis) is a term that
describes the relation between an action (verb) taken by the subject, the subject (the one who
performs the action) and the object (the thing being acted upon).
Active Voice:
Active voice is most commonly used verb. Active voice is where; the subject is the one who
performs an action (verb), while object is the thing being acted upon.
When the subject performs an action, the verb is in Active voice.
For example:
The mouse ate the cheese.
Here, the mouse is the subject, ate is the action (verb) and cheese is the object. Since the subject is
doing an action, we say that the verb is in active voice.

Rita writes a letter.
Here, Rita is the subject, writes is the active verb and letter is the object.
Sarah has written a book on her family.
Here, Sarah is the subject, written is the active verb and book is the object.
Uses of the Active Voice:
Active sentences are more direct (This proves that the subject admits that he was the one who did
the act) and engaging for the reader. The sentences are shorter and allow you to express an
authoritative tone. And they are also often less confusing and ambiguous.
Passive Voice:
Passive voice is where; the object is suspected to have done an action (verb) and the subject is the
thing being performed on.
When the subject is the target for an action, then the verb is in Passive voice.
For example:
The cheese was eaten by the mouse.
Here, the cheese is the subject, eaten is the passive verb and mouse is the object. Since the subject is
the one being suspected for the action, we say that the verb is in the passive voice.

The Gap Between Vocal And Instrumental Instruction
Throughout the beginning of music education, there has been a divide. A separation between the
lands of vocalists and instrumentalists existed and still exists today. While it isn't a conscience
happening at all times, it can divide a music program into two separate entities. Figuring out how
the two areas can coincide will ultimately get music educators on the right tracks for building an
excelling program. When students feel that they can be in both and feel wanted in each area and not
feel tension between the directors and the music choices, they can thrive. Removing the gap
between vocal and instrumental instruction can be done by researching alike techniques and
implementing the coinciding department into either program.

With woodwind players, tone can be changed by simply changing the space in the throat and mouth.
The same can be said of brass players, but one other aspect lies in the amount of space between the
teeth. If enough space between the teeth is not present, especially with young brass players, an
unpleasant buzzing sound will occur, once again hindering a beautiful tone. The directors of
vocalists push and push for more space in the mouth and throat, especially with young singers that
want to sound like the next greatest pop artist. The music performed in the context of concerts and
contests at the high school and middle school level, however, need just the opposite.
The last way technique overlaps, is in the use of warmups, and technical exercises. Instrumentalists
use these on a reoccurring basis for warmups before rehearsal. Scales are learned at a brisk tempo
for auditions and at the collegiate level, technique books and extended technique exercises are
studied. These are used to not only warm up air, but to also warm up the fingers and gain dexterity.
For vocalists, similar processes occur. Before rehearsing, vocalists use warmups; most of which are
based on scales, arpeggios and other theory points. They are used to warm up the voice, and get
performers aware of their breathing and voice flexibility. All of these are extremely similar to their
voice counterparts. Some

Symptoms And Treatment Of An Idiopathic Etiology
As previously reported, Ms. Noid referred herself for a voice evaluation because of a chronic,
persistent dysphonia characterized by "severe hoarseness and breathiness." She had a recent ENT
report indicating a "left adductor vocal cord paralysis" which is paralyzed in the intermediate
position. Furthermore, she has reported that her symptoms have persisted for 18 months, eliminating
the possibility of an idiopathic etiology. After completing a voice evaluation, recommendations for
medical clearance would include evaluations performed by a laryngologist, neurologist, and/or
evaluations performed by professionals who would be part of the client's medical team. The
recommendation for treatment options would be begin by educating the client, and providing her
with behavioral and medical treatment options. Furthermore, Ms. Noid would be informed with the
benefits and potential side effects of the various treatments. Since Ms. Noid, presents with a left
adductor vocal fold paralysis in the intermediate position (situated midway between abduction and
paramedian position), behavioral interventions could be applied before considering surgical
treatments. With vocal fold paralysis, Ms. Noid may have developed compensatory mechanisms,
which can be eliminated through education and proper compensatory techniques. Behavioral
treatments that can be implemented include: Pushing Techniques, Vocal Function Exercises,
Resonant Voice Therapy, or Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT). Pushing

Creative Thinking Job With Google
I am prepared for a creative thinking job with google, working on the Google Home because of the
skills that I developed through my technical communication class. In LMC 3403 I expanded my
knowledge on technical communication and continued to grow as an individual. I learned a lot about
a different types of voice personas and the characteristics of sound interfaces. Perhaps the biggest
takeaway in the class for me came through the development of my groups own sound interface. We
were forced to focus on the user interaction and really think about the characteristics that the voice
would possess, including the details that go into a voice persona like Siri, Alexa, and the Google

During LMC 3403 I acquired a foundational vocabulary for discussing and analyzing sounds,

Botox
When people think of new fashion trends they normally think of clothes, but the newest beauty
craze that has hit the middle age market is Botox. Botox injection therapy, although not completely
new, has come out swinging since being approved for use in cosmetic improvements in 2002. Botox
is used to eliminate the look of aging by reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the face, neck and
hands. Most commonly, patients use Botox to eliminate crow's feet around the eyes, wrinkles on the

The Botox procedure is preferred to cosmetic surgery because it is non–surgical, safe, simple, and

Today, Botox is not only used for beauty but is also used to treat a variety of problems, such as
migraines, neck pain, excessive sweating, body odor, morbid obesity, carpal tunnel syndrome, stroke
paralysis, incontinence and clubfoot in infants to name just a few. It has become a life savor for
many people with debilitating disease or disorders. Using Botox as a medical treatment has recently
hit close to home when my Mom was diagnosed two years ago with a rare vocal disorder called
spasmodic dysphonia. The origin of this disorder was originally thought to be psychoneurotic, but in
recent years it has become classified as a movement disorder of the larynx. Spasmodic dysphonia
involves uncontrollable "spasms" of the muscles in the vocal cords that cause interruptions in speech
which affect the quality of a person's voice. In the more common type, adductor spasmodic
dysphonia (ADSD), vocal cords prematurely tighten when speaking which causes a squeaky high
pitch voice. In the type of dysphonia my mom has, abductor spasmodic dysphonia (ABSD), when
she talks, her vocal cords don't close when they are supposed to which results in a breathy, whispery
voice. Her voice seemed to get worse over time, it was less able to understand what she was

sections most of the time, these three sections were soprano, alto, and bass. Sopranos and altos
consist of females and basses consist of male. Sopranos would usually have the melodies in the song
and altos would sing an octave lower and basses would sing very low. However, there were times
when altos had the melodies instead of sopranos. During some songs, the choir would split into four
sections, sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. While sopranos, altos, and basses consist of
homogenous genders, tenors were heterogeneous. Tenors would sing lower than altos but higher
than basses. Before singing any songs, the choir members warmed up their voices by singing
different vowels in ascending and descending C major

My Reflective Essay Writing
Before this semester, my essay writing would have been considered rather poor. This was because I
did not understand the various components of a properly written and accompany them to effectively
communicate my ideas. I lacked the most in keeping the audience involved hence, catching and
maintaining their attention, to my writing from the introduction to the conclusion. To me, writing
was more complicated than a speech since a speech involved direct audience who the speaker can
gauge their feelings. I took writing as a difficult task since it involved indirect audience and ensuring
that I meet the demands of such indirect audience, brought more confusion. Though the case, this
past semester's class has really improved my skills in writing. I have learned to to make an effective
written piece. Through the various learning experiences such as individual readings, professional
feedback and many others, I have been able to interact with diverse knowledge sources which have
made me much better by removing the confusion and negative picture I had with regard to writing.
The first area of my improvement is on the organization skills which I have gained, enabling me to
develop an excellent structure for my essays. In my first essays, I was struggling to build an
introduction that would not only be clear to the readers but also cultivate their interest to read the
rest of the article. My introduction thus appeared ambiguous and was very general as from the
feedback I would regularly obtain from my Instructor. Through engaging in regular essay writing,
this has really changed. This is evident in my cause and effect essay where I was able to introduce
the easy with a personal history of the perception of the people with regard to the water they took
'At home, people subconsciously believe that the water they drink, wash clothes with and bathe in is
clean' (Kulhahay 1, par. 1)
. I was able to place the audience to the issue I was addressing by giving their general view on how
they treat water contamination which was the subject of my writing. In this easy I was able to
introduce the readers to the controversy that had me to write the paper i.e. both leaving the water
untreated and treating it is a challenge as in

Analysis of the Play Candide Essay
In Act One of Candide, there is four scenes, the first scene is entitled Westphalia, when the scene is
first introduced the music has a happy sound, similar to that of circus music and as the introduction
goes on the music goes from an allegro tempo to a peaceful and dream like piano sound and grave
tempo. As the music continues to come in the lights continue to brighten on stage as well as if the
music and lights are tied together. As the cast came out they performed the opening song during this
song they harmonized really well. In Scene One the audience is introduced to the Baron and
Baroness of Westphalia, Baron Thunder–ton–Tronck and Baroness; the Baron is a baritone, his
voice is low but not low enough to be a bass; the Baroness is a ... Show more content on

During a later part of Scene Two when the cast is dancing the movements match the music, they
appeared to be doing the Waltz, so the music had abrupt changes. In Scene Three: Cadiz, the
orchestra plays some sad and somber music at the beginning. As the scene progresses the music
goes from dark and dismal to happy and cheerful. During one of the songs of Scene Four: Paris the
Old Lady, Cunegonde and Candide were discussing a flight and the music being played by the
orchestra matched the lyrics bringing the idea of a flight to life. The Old Lady has a mezzo soprano
voice she executes all of her notes well in the song. At the end of scene three Candide, Cunegonde,
and the Old Lady leave to go to a new place and in the song they sing there are rounds, which were
well executed. It helped change the mood again which brightened up the audience. In Act Two,
Scene One: Buenos Aires, the music has a fast tempo and the music is being played at a forte level,
as the music continues it suddenly softens to piano and the tempo slows down. Later in the scene
during one of the songs you could hear a washing board being played which added a new sound to
the music the audience was hearing. When the audience is being introduced to the Commander, a
song that has a Spanish sound is

Example Of Syntactical Ambiguity

  • 1. Example Of Syntactical Ambiguity 4. CLARITY. In order for our writing to be clear there are some common discursive elements that the user must avoid. Some of those elements have relevance in writing but they would only confuse the reader in smaller work. As the Style Guide for The Economist states: "Clarity of writing usually follows clarity of thought". Clarity conveys readers comprehending our message effortlessly; writing properly involves successful communication. Examples: *The horse raced past the barn fell. ✓The horse which was raced past the barn fell. (Pinker, 2014) *As linguist Geoffrey Pullum has noted, sometimes the passive voice is necessary. (Pinker, 2014) ✓As the linguist Geoffrey Pullum has noted, sometimes the passive voice is necessary. (Pinker, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An implement with a handle and solid surface, typically of wood, used for hitting the ball in game such as cricket, baseball and table tennis. (Oxford Dictionary) 2. A nocturnal capable of sustained flight. (Oxford Dictionary) Best choice: John has a bat to play baseball. 4.3.2 SYNTACTICAL The syntactical ambiguity is when words can be interconnected into more than one tree. It must be avoid as much as possible. Example: The French teacher speaks very fast We find two interpretations: 1. The teacher that teaches French 2. The teacher from France Best choice: The teacher that teach French speaks very fast  Does the text contain any ambiguity? If it does, substitute it with another word or phrase. 4.4 HEDGING The heading is usually used by the writer, in order to distance their opinion from the text and avoid responsibility for mistake. Words such as: almost, apparently, comparatively, fairly, in part, nearly, partially, predominantly, presumably, rather, relatively, seemingly, so to speak, somewhat, sort of, to a certain degree, to some extent, and the ubiquitous I would argue (Pinker, 2014) are considered as if the author is hiding their true intention and it shows the author´s lack of ... • 3. Significance And Innovation Of The Proposed Research Significance and innovation of the proposed research The use and comprehension of the passive sentence structure is the subject of much debate in the field of psycholinguistics. There have been many studies conducted addressing the issue of why passive sentence structures are so underused as compared to active sentence structures in children. Several studies have tried to show that passive sentence structures can actually be elicited through structural priming, or more generally being more exposed to that specific type of sentence. Although plenty of research as been conducted examining the P600 response in reference to various types of syntactical anomalies, I could not find one study that was specifically focused on the priming of passive sentence structures, even though it is said that the P600 should respond to this specific sentence structure. Therefore, the proposed study will contribute to the field of psycholinguistics by examining the P600 response of children using the structural priming paradigm. Based on the results of the study, the study may also be able to determine if the P600 response could serve as an adequate neural marker for the effectiveness of passive voice structural priming. Study design The proposed study will make use of the structural priming paradigm used in previous studies (Gámez & Shimpi, 2015; Vasilyeva, Waterfall, Gámez, Gómez, Bowers, & Shimpi, 2010), as well as the measurement of event–related potentials. Participants are to be randomly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Career Of A Singing Career There are many careers someone can choose based on personal preference and hobbies. One of the best jobs is a singing career. The reason for this choice of career is that it can be very rewarding. We all have some big name star that pops into our head when we hear the word "singer". Maybe it is Beyonce or Justin Bieber, depending on personal music type. Singing is a way to express how you feel through songs when words can't. Careers come in a variety of forms and many have complex jobs. A singing career is a pretty straight forward job, at first glance. There are many different jobs that someone in this career path has to do on a day to day basis. First, writing music and lyrics. Before a singer can start on a career they need a plan, so in singing it isn't a good idea to just jump right in without some music. This can either be an original music piece or a covers of another artist's songs. Second is having to perform for crowds and other groups. If a singer wants to gain recognition and fame, they need to perform for others. One of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The earnings make have to do with how much merchandise such as t–shirts and cds are sold at a concert. Another way to earn money in this career is tips. These can be during starting years as well as when the singer gains popularity. Another thing that plays a big part in how much money a singer will earn yearly is how many shows they perform at or if they volunteer at different places that will allow them to get some extra money. The singer won't be able to keep all the money they earn because if they are apart of a contract, some of that money will go to the rest of the group. Plus, if at anytime they choose to play an instrument like for instance, a guitar, they are going to need to buy equipment to help them perform like microphones and the stands, monitors, and compact disks ... • 7. The Role Of the Castrati in the Baroque Era The Role Of the Castrati in the Baroque Era When it comes to music history, the Castrati are one of the most important and debated topics. The Castrati were men (in Italian opera) that had been castrated during puberty to stop a flow of hormones, causing them to have the voice of a soprano woman, but the vocal power of an older, full–grown man. A general estimate said that four thousand boys a year were castrated in Italy. Some Castrati tried to make it in church choirs (which often gave them almost nothing of monetary value), most chose the opera route. They reigned supreme when they got onstage, being the obvious star of the show. They were the master performers that drew the crowd in with their amazing voices. During the Baroque ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though he was a soprano, he also had an amazingly clear lower register, where a tenor would most likely be comfortable. Farinelli showed off all the sweetness of his voice wherever he traveled and was rewarded with roars of applause. During this period of time, he did no wrong. He was famous beyond belief, a formidable performer, and had honors upon honors. One of his most famous performances involved him having a duet with a trumpet that turned into a duel. Porpora, who was his teacher, spoke about the event: "During the run of an opera there was a struggle every night between Farinelli and a famous player on the trumpet [...] After severally swelling a note in which each manifested the power of his lungs and tried to rival the other in brilliancy and force, they had both a swell and shake together, by thirds, which was continued so long [...] that both seemed exhausted; and, in fact, the trumpeter, wholly spent, gave it up, thinking, however, his antagonist as much tired as himself [...]; when Farinelli, with a smile on his countenance, showing that he had only been sporting with him all that time, broke out all at once in the same breath, with fresh vigor, and not only swelled and shook the note, but ran the most rapid and difficult divisions and was at last silenced only by the acclamations of the audience. From this period may be dated the superiority which he ever maintained over all his contemporaries." Another famous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Head and Neck Essay Common head and neck surgery includes the removal of the voice box: largyngectomy and tracheostomy: making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck and opening an airway through an incision in the trachea. The removal of the larynx occurs in cases of laryngeal cancer and in this case the airway is separated from the mouth, nose and oesophagus meaning that the patient will breathe through a stoma in the neck. In tracheostomy cases the resulting stoma can act as an airway and a tracheotomy tube is inserted, enabling the individual to breathe without the use of their nose and mouth. This means that air does not pass through the vocal cords and so speech is not possible. Sometimes patients can have a tracheostomy tube that allows some air to go through the vocal chords and out of the mouth. Patients can have this type of tube if they are able to swallow without difficulty and if they do not need a tracheostomy tube with an inflated cuff in order to get air into the lungs. The last option is surgical voice restoration which was introduced by Singer & Blom in 1980(Blom,1995) Not all patients are suitable for this however, It involves a tracheoesophageal speaking valve, a small fistula is surgically created through the tracheal wall into the oesophagus. A small, one way valve is inserted into the fistula and it allows air to be shunted from the trachea to the oesophagus and up through the pharyngo–oesophageal segment creating an acoustic wave form and voice. A longer flow of voice can be achieved as pulmonary air is used as the initiator for voice. Another problem that arises in head and neck patients is that of malnutrition and weight loss. • 11. Literary Devices In Catcher In The Rye The world of adults is full of phonies and the only way to combat it is to be as innocent as a child. Today, people have become so self–interested that they fail to listen to everyone – even themselves. These are the points J.D. Salinger brings up in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. Throughout the novel, J.D. Salinger's uses of voice, conflict, aposiopesis, irony, and metaphor emphasize these points. The Catcher in the Rye is a story of a battle to preserve innocence. The Catcher in the Rye follows the adventures of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden has changed schools several times over the past years – because he either failed all his classes or harbored strong feelings of hate and disgust towards his school. Holden, during the book's events, is 16 years old, quite tall, and already has some gray hair. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holden coins this phrase for himself based on a poem that he heard during events that that occurred before the events of the book. This poem is called Coming thro' the Rye by Robert Burns. The irony between the poem and the novel begins with the two different interpretations of "a catcher in the rye". Holden says that he sees himself "catch[ing] everybody [children] if they start to go over the cliff. . . I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all" (Salinger ). Holden believes that being a "catcher in the rye" involves protecting and preserving the innocence of the children around him. However, the poem Holden gets this interpretation from is interpreted by most to not be about innocence, but rather casual sex. Holden now seems to understand how disgusting and phony sexuality and adulthood is. Holden wants to save children from the horrors that come with growing up, but the irony lies in Holden basing his own beliefs on a poem about sex. Salinger's deviation from the traditional meaning of Robert Burns' poem gives interesting irony that both shows how mature and naïve Holden really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Theatre, located in the Mary Alice Marshal Performing Arts Center, at Temple College is small, seating approximately 100 people. Since the setting is quaint, it makes for a personal experience, allowing the audience to truly see and hear the entertainers character. The stage size also has a downside, at times the actors would trip over each other while dancing. The Vocal Point concert titled From Rent to Now: The last 20 Years of Broadway: is directed by Dr. Sara Baker. This Contemporary Broadway show consists of sixteen characters. It is a spoof on musicals. The opening scene played by Trey Shonkwiler and Konnor Widmann was funny, and catchy. They sang A Musical from Something Rotten! Shonkwiler is a Tenor, while Widmann is a Baritone. Together they made beautiful harmonies, they complimented each other vocally, and as actors very well. The next song Mama Who Bore Me from Spring Awakening was sung by all the women, with a soloist. Kristen Garth has a lovely alto voice, her performance was unconfident, and a bit nervous, she had a few notes that were flat, overall it was nice. There were a few moments where the background singers were too loud, overpowering the soloist. When He Sees Me, from Waitress, sung by Kris Glorsorio was wonderful. There are just more girls. He said he believes there are a number of reasons for such an increase in numbers in the group. One is because of the success of the women's choir in the past. Junior Anna Stillman said she thinks it's awesome to have so many girls in the choir and they are starting to sing very well as a group, although at times it is hard to have a good balance of sound with so many voices at one time. "It can be distracting at times. I love choir, and when other people continue to talk while we are trying to sing and learn new pieces, it can be distracting." But in the long run, Stillman also said she thinks that having more girls in choir will make them better as a whole because they have a lot of strong upperclassmen singers and some very talented sophomores with good voices coming to help them out. Baritone voices are warm and rich–––think of a cello in the string family. The Toreador Song from Carmen's Bizet is a famous example of the baritone voice, and Nabucco and MacBeth are also well–known operas for baritone. The Bass Voice At last we come to the bass voice–––the anchor of the vocal family. The bass in an opera rarely enjoys heroism or much of a love life, since composers prefer to give basses the role of a villain. A voice is generally considered a bass when it reaches the second E below middle C. As with the other voice types, the bass voice is divided into subgroups. Basso Cantante refers to a "singing" bass voice, while the Basso Profundo is the lowest and deepest of the basses. Basso Buffo, or the "humorous" bass, and the hoher (high) bass round out the family. Famous bass roles include Duke Bluebeard from Bluebeard's Castle(Bartok), Gounod's Mephistopheles from Faust, and the title role of Don Giovanni by Mozart. 'All The Bright Places' is a story about love and depression, where a boy, Finch, helps Violet find the will to live, while he has trouble keeping his head above water. My family has gone through the stress, anger and sadness of depression, too: my cousin, Mitch, committed suicide by hanging himself. Although it has been two years, the pain has still not completely gone away. Violet Markey has lost her older sister (and best friend) in a fatal car crash on an icy bridge. She is overwhelmed by guilt, as she was the one who begged her sister to take her home, and told her to take the shortcut, ultimately leading to Eleanor's death. When this happens, she loses friends and is afraid to make any, afraid she will lose them too. After losing Mitch, I also lost my Nana and Papa (grandmother and grandfather). My cousin, Dimity had bowel cancer and although she is alive and well now, it is still scary to think how close we were to losing her. This made me realize, unlike other people my age, how close death is in our everyday lives, and, unlike cartoon character, we cannot peel ourselves from the rubble and complete our quest or journey. Losing some of the major people in my life has, just like Violet, made me scared to let go of people and even more scared of letting them into my heart. Obviously, with a novel also comes language, which Camus incorporates cleverly as a way to indirectly illustrate Meursault's thoughts about certain situations. Although the novel represents a postmodern setting, the author shifts the overall meaning. In The Stranger, Camus applies a unique literary style as a power that deflects blame from Meursault, the antiheroic character. In order to disclaim the fault of Meursault, Camus incorporates several instances in which he leaves a greater sense of authority to nonliving objects, while further drawing attention away from the main character. He describes the stabbing as a "scorching blade [that] slashes at [his] eyelashes and stabs at [his] stinging eyes" (59). The moment that the blade brings itself to Meursault's face and slashes at his eyelashes, of course, is the point at which Meursault acknowledges that everything is beginning to reel. Finally, under the influence of the sea's fiery breath and the sun's scorching attitude, Meursault admits that "the trigger gave" when reminiscing on the death of the Arab (59). Not until after he blames the trigger for the mishap does he use first person to describe the negative actions, as he shoots the Arab four more times. At this point, perhaps, he realizes his own fault within the situation as he continues to set himself in place for the remainder of part one. The simple sentences in The Stranger reveal Meursault's emotional detachment from society, while the more complex sentences are assigned to objects with authority. Throughout the entire novel, Meursault's simplicity and disinterest in the world can be identified with the incorporation of his simple statements. Especially in this particular passage, Meursault finds it unimportant to challenge himself in a way that makes sense. Although Meursault recognizes the sensibility of walking ... • 31. A Raisin The Sun And Willy Loman Compare And Contrast Essay The striving for being rich and have a wealthy life has always been present in the American society. Often living in a capitalistic society leads people to become greedy, and as a result many become too materialistic. This may happen because of the challenge to pursue the American dream where most of Americans are trying to fulfill it. Unfortunately, for most of people it is very difficult to acquire this high status and to secure a spot in the upper–class society. Arthur Miller's, Death of a Salesman, and Lorraine Hansberry's, A Raisin the Sun, are two plays that reveal two main characters: Willy Loman and Walter Lee Young, characters that reflect typical features of the people who struggles to achieve the American Dream. Although they may have common characteristics and share similarities, they also have numerous issues and are very different, setting them apart from other families and even each other. Therefore, the main focus of this paper will be to compare and put in contrast these two great characters. In both plays, A Raisin the Sun and Death of a Salesman, the father (Walter and Willy) is the main individual that holds his attention throughout the plays. Because of their roles are often changing in the plays, Walter and Willy can be the protagonist and the antagonist. That being said, they both have goals to possess their own business and to be their own boss. They both strive to live wealthy. As Walter says "No...It was always money, Mama. We just didn't know about it" (Hansberry). This reveals that Walter is more materialistic instead of considering the feeling of his family. Willy and Walter are very similar in many ways. For instance, they both are trying to be good fathers. Walter's goal to get rich is influenced by his restless desire to offer to his family a better life: "You tired, ain't you? Tired of everything. Me, the boy, the way we live–this beat–up hole– everything. Ain't you?" (Discovering Literature, 1295). Meanwhile, the love that Willy has for his sons is undeniable. Very often he would slip into the past before he drifted apart from his sons: "Remarkable. Remember those days? The way Biff used to simonize that car? • 33. Literary Differences In Kissing The Witch By Emma Donoghue Nobody made me do the things I did, nobody scolded me, nobody punished me but me. The shrill voices were all inside. Do this, do that, you lazy heap of dirt" (2). Coming from the first passage of Emma Donoghue's Kissing the Witch sets a revision of popular fairy tales whereas internal voices, seen as personal experience, and their comparison to external voices, seen as societal expectations, create places where these stories change. This shift can be seen as a move away from the original well known story or aspects of that particular story, while also representing a change in the narrator of the story itself. The passage above for instance occurs when a cinderella type character is introduced to the reader. These internal voices are normally associated with the external voices of the evil stepmother and stepdaughters, which is associated widely with a common thread within the cinderella story itself. This revision flips what is normally seen as an external voice and internalizes it. A few pages later we see the girl and her interaction with the prince after he proposes marriage. "The voices were shrieking, Yes yes yes say yes before you lose your chance you bag of nothingness. I opened my teeth but no sound came out" (7). While the passage above set up the idea of internal voices, this passage shows how this internalized external voice is not the voice of the cinderella type narrator. Do a search and find at least three (3) different definitions of literacy and/or descriptions of types of literacy. Only one may come from a dictionary. These must be significantly different from one another. List these here with sources properly cited (APA). Literacy has several definitions. It is defined as "the ability to read and write" (Literacy, 2015, para. 1), and knowledge relating to a certain subject (Literacy, 2015). In academic terms, literacy is defined as the proficient ability to read and construct meaning out of literature and content in school (Torgesen et al., 2007 as cited in Correction to: Literacy, 2016). Whitehurst and Lonigan (1998) define emergent literacy claiming, "early literacy was used to refer to the conceptual knowledge and skills that are developmental precursors to formal literacy" (Whitehurst & Lonigan, 1998, p. 608 as cited in Chan, 2015). On the other hand, Lytle and Wolfe (1989) define literacy through four metaphors: literacy as tasks, reflection, practices, and skills (as cited in Walter, 1999). • 47. Anthony Walton Character Analysis A chorus is defined by Merriam Webster's Dictionary as,¨something performed, sung, or uttered simultaneously or unanimously by a number of persons.¨ The idea behind a chorus is that all of these voices, when used together, can make a much more beautiful work of art. The use of different pitches and tones within this chorus creates music with depth and more emotion. However, for Anthony Walton, a chorus has a slightly different meaning. Within his narrative, Mississippi, he allocates an entire chapter to the idea of a chorus; many things working together to accomplish one goal. This goal isn't to create a more beautiful piece of music, but instead to deconstruct our understanding of Mississippi as we know it and show us its true realities. Walton ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Speaking in an incorrect pitch, volume, or with poor placement may be even more damaging to the larynx than singing because people speak more than they sing. In most cases, the problems include speaking in a pitch that is focused in the throat. While serious problems in this area are best resolved with the help of a licensed voice therapist, the singer can make some changes based on experience with their preferred placement when singing. Misconceptions include the idea that speaking very softly or whispering will help save voice. People who speak softly do so by blowing breath through the tone stopping the glottis from closing completely. Since the glottis' function is to close, it may compensate with a time of no closure by creating an edema or swelling to fill up the empty space (Greschner, 2017). Therefore, the singer who thinks they are protecting or reserving the voice may be creating a bigger problem threatening their vocal health. In addition, whispering is often focused in the throat. This may be particularly true when speaking on the phone or in situations they may not want to be overheard. In such cases it may be necessary to raise the volume of the speaking voice in order to raise the focus or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. How Human Memory Is Unreliable Due For Memory Distortion... Proximity Analysis of Psychology Popular Articles No one is born to a genius. I do not believe in instant success, especially in writing. Most of the time when I finished writing essays, I felt satisfied with what I wrote. I rarely try to go back and improve my own writings. The Unreliability of Human Memory is an analytical essay from my Workload 57S class. This paper is about how human memory is unreliable due to memory distortion and changes from other influences. By rereading an essay that I wrote before, I analyzed and learned about how efficient did I write in a particular genre. For this analytical essay about the human brain, I would categorize it as a scientific popular article with the emphasis on psychology. Although it might not perfectly fit the genre, it helped me get to understand my grammatical choices and rhetorical styles for improving on writing. In order to analyze my essay, I made a chart that summarizes my grammar patterns and writing styles based on some practices from Dana Ferris's book, "Language Power." One interesting finding is that I heavily relied on using subordinating conjunctions. About 47% of my sentences used conjunctions to combine clauses. In addition, I used 4 passive sentences out of 55 total sentences. In her book, Ferris states, "passive voice can emphasize information or deemphasize the actor" (Ferris, 110). Passive sentences frown on in most genres, but it can also be common in scientific writings. Lastly, my essay used a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sentences are shorter and allow you to express an authoritative tone. And they are also often less confusing and ambiguous. Passive Voice: Passive voice is where; the object is suspected to have done an action (verb) and the subject is the thing being performed on. A separation between the lands of vocalists and instrumentalists existed and still exists today. Figuring out how the two areas can coincide will ultimately get music educators on the right tracks for building an excelling program. The same can be said of brass players, but one other aspect lies in the amount of space between the teeth. If enough space between the teeth is not present, especially with young brass players, an unpleasant buzzing sound will occur, once again hindering a beautiful tone. The directors of vocalists push and push for more space in the mouth and throat, especially with young singers that want to sound like the next greatest pop artist. The music performed in the context of concerts and contests at the high school and middle school level, however, need just the opposite. The last way technique overlaps, is in the use of warmups, and technical exercises. Instrumentalists use these on a reoccurring basis for warmups before rehearsal. Scales are learned at a brisk tempo for auditions and at the collegiate level, technique books and extended technique exercises are studied. These are used to not only warm up air, but to also warm up the fingers and gain dexterity. For vocalists, similar processes occur. Before rehearsing, vocalists use warmups; most of which are based on scales, arpeggios and other theory points. She had a recent ENT report indicating a "left adductor vocal cord paralysis" which is paralyzed in the intermediate position. Creative Thinking Job With Google I am prepared for a creative thinking job with google, working on the Google Home because of the skills that I developed through my technical communication class. In LMC 3403 I expanded my knowledge on technical communication and continued to grow as an individual. Spasmodic dysphonia involves uncontrollable "spasms" of the muscles in the vocal cords that cause interruptions in speech which affect the quality of a person's voice. In the more common type, adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD), vocal cords prematurely tighten when speaking which causes a squeaky high pitch voice. This was because I did not understand the various components of a properly written and accompany them to effectively communicate my ideas. I lacked the most in keeping the audience involved hence, catching and maintaining their attention, to my writing from the introduction to the conclusion. To me, writing was more complicated than a speech since a speech involved direct audience who the speaker can gauge their feelings. I took writing as a difficult task since it involved indirect audience and ensuring that I meet the demands of such indirect audience, brought more confusion. Through the various learning experiences such as individual readings, professional feedback and many others, I have been able to interact with diverse knowledge sources which have made me much better by removing the confusion and negative picture I had with regard to writing.
