PRIMARY RESEARCH RESULTS
The results of this research indicate McCombs students' knowledge and interest in social enterprise
as a possible future career choice, whether or not they are aware of where or how to locate resources
regarding social enterprise, and if they believe McCombs offers these types of resources. The
research results presented below fall under the category of primary research.
The primary research collected consisted of 217 survey responses and 12 in–person interviews. The
participants were all McCombs students with several different majors. Around 48% of the
participants were sophomores, and the remaining 52% were freshmen, juniors, and seniors. The
large number of sophomores who participated in the survey is valuable information for Impact Hub
Austin because McCombs sophomores are trying to pick a major and are looking towards their
future, making them very impressionable. The surveys and interviews analyzed similar questions.
However, the interviews allowed for a collection of more in depth responses, and allowed
participants to answer the question of why they had particular perceptions.

1. Going into Sauder For someone currently studying at the Sauder School of Business, I am amazed
that I got into this school. I have never taken a business course in my life (asides from learning a
little about marketing during my yearbook course and from watching television), and my high
school curriculum was centered on the sciences. All I knew was accounting since both my parents
are accountants; I was also aware of how prospective accountants needed to obtain their Certified
Public Accountant (CPA) certification and the existence of the "Big 4" accounting firms. Thus, I was
fairly narrow–minded and just hoped to get my bachelor's degree with a specialization in
accounting.
2. Changes in the Operation I think my biggest change had to come from the operations class with
Greg Werker. Even through COMM 290, he has definitely influenced which path I am considering
specializing in. Part of it has to do with Greg's expertise and the wide range of companies that he
has worked for; for instance, L'Oreal. I thought even more about supply chain management and
operations during the alumni class when Mike Tung was talking about his own experiences. From

The proliferation of crises around the world has led to a prominent increase in the fascination, as
well as interest, in the concept of "social entrepreneurship". In today's society, this concept has
inspired numerous individuals to pursue a career being social entrepreneur as it promises to solve
some of the world's toughest problems while earning money and gaining social status. That being
said, these are often the individuals/agencies that are exempted from public examination as they are

Consequently, this has led to an era of heropreneurship in which many individuals inspire to become
entrepreneurs who claim that they can solve these problems. Due to its heroic and feel good appeal,
many individuals work towards creating an "attractive" social enterprise or demand jobs with a
"social purpose". Nonetheless, while heropreneurship can be seen as an inspiring and exciting era,
there is room for further improvement. First, due to heropreneurship, the line between quick
solutions and progress has been blurred. While tackling these problems is considered a noble deed
and personally valuable, many individuals are not working towards solving the root of the problems
that occur in the affected countries. Rupert Scofield (2011) in his text, "The Social Entrepreneurs
Handbook" explains "but to really help them, you have to get to know them, walk in their shoes.
You would be surprised at the number of organizations that espouse this or that noble cause in which
the personnel seem only dimly acquainted with the facts on the ground" (5). It is apparent that many
individuals often prioritize short term solutions and disguise it as a long term because they do not
fully understand all aspects of the problem. It is important to realize that implementing successful
and sustainable solutions involves hard work. Investigating the root cause of the problem, as well as
researching existing solutions and their strengths and weaknesses is critical when attempting to

The term social refers to an inclusive and holistic approach towards the society. Generally, social

I. Introduction
Building Social Business is a book about social enterprise written by Muhammad Yunus.
Muhammad Yunus is a social entrepreneur, economist, banker, and civil servant leader from
Bangladesh. He is known for founding the Grameen Bank which is a microfinance organization and
community development bank. Yunus is a well–known proponent of microfinance and microcredit.
Due to his efforts in making a change through microfinance and microcredit and other noble causes,
Yunus has been given several awards including the Independence Day Award in 1987, World Food
Price in 1994, Pfeffer Peace Price also in 1994, Gandhi Peace Price in 2000, Volvo Environment

III. Reflection
After reading the first two chapters of Building Social Business, I was moved. I was inspired. Yunus
opened my eyes to another side of business which in his words was selfless. And indeed it was
selfless. Social business is truly selfless because it focuses on helping others and earning profit
comes second. By reading this book and reflecting, I realized it is better to be part of the solution
than be part of the problem. By looking at my community, at my environment, and at my
experiences in life, there are problems that will need solutions and I firmly believe that having a
social business is the solution. By my observation, slow public utilities, expensive medicine, and
empowering marginalized sectors are problems that can be solved by putting up social businesses.
By combining entrepreneurial mindset and experience, social awareness, and creativity, the ideal
social business can be done. But what makes a social business truly a social business is the

IS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP THE BEST WAY TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED?
Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching and running a new business while social
entrepreneurs launch the business and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental
issues simultaneously. Bill Drayton once said, "There is nothing more powerful than a new idea in
the hands of a social entrepreneur." In the world, there are billions of people have no access to
education, healthcare, clean drinking water, food and even the basic human rights and respect.
Violence, poverty and more global issues are at the alarm rate nowadays. These matters have to be
tackled immediately before it is too late to do so. In our opinion, social entrepreneurship is the best
way to help the needy and overcome the problem. New ideas, opportunities and technologies are
sought in solving long–standing social problems. There is a good example to indicate our words,
social entrepreneur in South America, Steve Katsaros. Can you imagine what was life like when oil
lamps and candles were all we had to light our cities with? Indoors was just as treacherous as
outdoors. Katsaros invented a solar–powered light bulb that provide isolated villages with power,
thus bypassing the need to bring a power infrastructure out to remote areas. It has brought a great
change in their daily lives which allow people to work, study and play at night without the use of
kerosene lamps, which may pollute the environment and arise the respiratory diseases such as
asthma. Consequently, Katsaros was able to bring convenience to the people while he can also stay

To cite the saying that social entrepreneurship is the best way to help people in need, we would like
to provide an outstanding example of social enterprise which is Grameen Bank. Grameen Bank was
officially founded in 1983 by Muhammad Yunus and it provides small loans, rather than charity, to
the poorest of the poor especially women in Bangladesh. This indeed provides an opportunity for the

The Fight Against Poverty Around The World
One of the most important steps in the fight against poverty around the world is the creation of jobs.
The most competitive and successful in this direction is the social entrepreneurship. The task of the
social enterprises is to contribute to the solving of the social problems and promoting of the people
's livelihood. Social enterprises provide jobs for hundreds of thousands of people in the various
fields: food production, marketing, credit, insurance, and transportation. The social enterprises open

When I first start on this module, I feel really odd about what exactly a social enterprise is. In our
daily life, there are tens of thousands businesses among us, but I have never thought about what
makes those business exits, what aims they are trying to achieve and what kind of business they are.
When thinking of social enterprise, I feel interested in how they run the business in a long term if it
is not profit driven, and how they maintain the daily operation with perhaps very little social capital

Social entrepreneurship which has been applied in so many different ways by so many different
analysts that it's depth of vast complexity is still being unraveled and it seems it is still in infancy. It
is a multi–interpretable concept and although the use of the term is widespread its use is either
overrated or misused. Hence, it is important to firstly understand what social entrepreneurship really
is.
To me, entrepreneurship is completely dedicating yourself to creating something out of nothing,

entrepreneurship has its own demerits. On one hand it is one major factor in bringing change while
on the other end it is being overused by companies who start off with the motive of being socially

As Benjamin Franklin once said, "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail." This is also
applicable when starting up a business either it's only for profit or non–profit. The book can be
summarized by the picture shown above. It shows how important business planning is to attain
sustainable social impact. In layman's term, business plan is like love by married couples, without it,
it cannot survive for a lifetime. Business plan can be considered as the life of the enterprise since all
of the plans, structures, strategies, and activities are included and also it effective forecasts if the
enterprise will be feasible or not. Business plan will guide your organization in generating another
kind of profit: lasting social impact. This will be further discussed on the next pages of this book
review.

Green Winter Through The Kick Starter Website
In efforts to grow the Seedfolk City Farm, Barker initiated Operation Green Winter through the
kick–starter website, Indiegogo. This was a community–focused urban agriculture project that
helped raise funds to continue operating the greenhouses during the winter. It also enabled them to
provide consistent year–round after–school employment for four of the young people that helped to
get the project off the ground. This campaign was in addition to several community events held in
efforts to raise money for the "green winter". This was as a result of weather implications in
Rochester, NY, which prevented them from growing fresh fruits and vegetables. The pilot aquaponic
farming system would "winterize" the greenhouse by sustaining a year–round farming operation that
enabled them to triple production capabilities with four new vertical grow beds. Not only did the
money raised help physically make these changes possible, but it also provided the youth with more
after school activities as a result of these expansions.
ProsperRochester has relied on its partnerships to achieve its goals. In order to establish these
greenhouses, ProsperRochester teamed up with In The City/Off The Grid. ICOG is a Rochester–
based cooperative business that offers solar installation services and general construction services,
while engaging in community development projects and employee training. Thankfully, ICOG was
able to assist with building and provide solar panels for the greenhouses.

Social Entrepreneurship
Rose Spiegel Rationale 5.7.13 Everyone describes social entrepreneurship differently. While many
have been able to describe the traits and features of a social entrepreneur there doesn't seem at all to
be a consensus about the definition of what constitutes the field of social entrepreneurship. Susan
Davis and David Bornstein in their book, Social Entrepreneurship: What Everyone Needs to Know
define social entrepreneurship as "a process by which citizens build or transform institutions to
advance solutions to social problems such as poverty, illness, illiteracy, environmental destruction,
human rights abuses and corruption (1). The NYU Reynolds Program defines it differently saying

I believe that the potential of social entrepreneurship extends far beyond the creation of a new sector
compromised of profit–seeking entities that achieve social and environmental good through their
products and services. In fact, I believe that the principles of social entrepreneurship hold the
greatest value for the pre–existing structures that are already in place. My personal interests in social
entrepreneurship are in how the principles and practices of the field can be applied to nonprofits and
the current private sector. Often social entrepreneurship is seen as a break away from traditional
modes of social change, namely the work done by nonprofits. It's supposed superiority stems from
its focus on efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. Like many proponents of social
entrepreneurship, I too, find the traditional models in the social sector to be insufficient for creating
the type of changes that our society desperately needs. I found myself growing more and more
skeptical of the ability of traditional non–profits to make social change. Finding funding often
seemed to take precedent over alleviating poverty and I constantly felt that the change we were
making was insufficient, superficial and unsustainable. When I came to NYU I was near ready to
wash my hands of this "social change" business and pursue something else that might interest me,
