2. Main image- This DPS features two images of the cover artist of the magazine, Rihanna. She is shown in two very
different representations. On the left hand side of the DPS a mid shot is used, portraying her as vulnerable and quite
alone. She is shown looking the ground and her facial expression is sad and regretful. This represents her as a normal
person who experiences times where she feels down/upset. This would appeal to the audience as it shows them the
other side to Rihanna is rarely shown in the media. This would attract the audience as Blumler and Katz uses and
gratification theory states that this would allow the audience to create their ‘personal identity’. The audience would
compare themselves to Rihanna and relate to a time where they’ve felt alone and sad. Low key lighting is used to
make her look very dark, it creates a shadow over her so the reader is unable to see half her face. This suggests that
the reader only knows one side to Rihanna, which would appeal to them as it implies that the article will reveal the
side they never get to see. In contrast, on the right hand size of DPS Rihanna is shown in high key lighting in a
completely different position. She is shown more confidently positioned, leaning forward with half her body pressed
against the wall. The high key lighting shows that she’s come out of the darkness and is now in a much better place.
The lighting is very bright and white which has connotations of purity and truth. This would attract the audience as it
suggests that the article will reveal the ‘truth’ about Rihanna. However, her facial expression is still sombre and she is
still shown looking to the ground. This shows that even when she’s in the spotlight and surrounded by media
attention she is a still a normal person and has bad days like everyone else. She is shown wearing a black top and a
black skirt, this contrasts against the high key lighting and white background. The black outfit could be used to
suggest that she has ‘secrets’ like everybody else. The lighting also represents her as an ‘angel’ like figure which could
emphasise her success.
3. Pull quote- The DPS features a pull quote on the left hand side of page next to the image of Rihanna. It
says ‘When I was younger I just always loved looking at magazines and tearing out pictures. My best friend
and me would say ‘Hey, look, she wore it like that, lets try do it!’ It became a necessity when I realised I
could combine my interest for fashion with my love for music, then it went off’. This quote would entice
the audience to read the magazine as they can relate to what she’s saying. The audience would be able to
relate to looking in the magazine and seeing artists looking idealistic which they would aspire to look like.
Under the quote it says her name in a capitalised black font. This adds validity to the article as it proves the
quote has come from Rihanna herself and it implies that the article will feature many more quotes from
Rihanna. The pull quote is in a red typeface which has connotations of energy and strength which links
back to the main images and suggests that although she faces problems she is also a strong person. This
would appeal to the audience who would further feel inspired. The red typeface also stands out against the
white background and is the only colour on the DPS which captures the attention of the reader.
At the top of the right hand side of the DPS, there is text showing where the audience can buy the clothes
that Rihanna is wearing in the main images. This is a subtle form of advertising on the magazine as it
encourages the audience to buy these clothes which Rihanna has been shown wearing. It suggests that the
audience can look like Rihanna and have the same style. This would appeal to the audience as the i-D
magazine is based on fashion as well as music. The target audience would be very interested in fashion,
therefore they would be intrigued as to where they can buy all the clothes in the magazine.
4. The layout- the layout of the page is very plain and simple, this could be to draw attention to the
pull quote and the main images of Rihanna. The article is in a column which is a typical convention
of magazine DPS’s. However, the article doesn’t open with a drop cap which most popular music
magazines like Q, Rolling Stone and Billboard use. Both pages are in black and white which is quite a
reflective colour scheme which implies the article will reflect on Rihanna’s success, how she got
there and the trouble she faced. This would appeal to the audience who would be intrigued to find
out about her life as she is often in the limelight.
Font- There are multiple different fonts used on the DPS. For the article, a black sans serif font is
used which gives a professional look which implies the magazine is to a high standard which would
appeal to the audience. For the pull quote, a sans serif font is used that’s look like the typeface used
on a typewriter. This could be done because the pull quote talks about Rihanna’s past which makes
the article seem reflective and type writer’s were commonly used in the past.
