1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. My media product shows both males and females aged between 16-20 as the stereo typical
‘Indie’ persona. My magazine perceive my target audience as music ethusiasts that are differently
dressed to suit their music taste, can also be slightly brash or be slightly introvert. I gave this
impression to my audience mainly through my article with Ryan spencer as he talks about the
antics that happen onstage and his love of music. I chose to have Ryan wear a relaxed outfit that
consisted of double denim and a checked shirt and I made my model pose in a way that would be
classed as ‘cool’ or ‘relaxed which is fairly typical of the indie genre. I thought by showing Ryan in
this light and creating a story which shows he gets up close and personal with the fans and goes
to festivals and acts like any other person there, it would help the audience relate to him and the
social group he represents. The shots I used of Ryan are fairly up close and personal. On my main
Image which is used on the front cover, ryan has his head turned away from the camera which
sugests shyness and matches perfectly to the ‘indie’ stereotype I tried to match. In my article I
used a picture of ryan in the same clothing but looking into the camera with a cheeky smile. I
thought this would appeal to the readers as it would make ryan look more casual, more human
so to speak and more relatable other than be seen as an untouchable celebrity. I had him do a
cheeky grin with his hands in his pockets so men would admire him or see him as a friendly figure
the ‘cool guy’ whereas women would feel attracted to him.
I represented olivia ( the girl on the contents page ) as a slightly more confident character by
taking pictures of her looking directly at the camera to give off a hazy, mysterious sexy type of
look. I love the fact her hair is messy and shes wearing a hoody, it gives off more of a rough
grunge/indie look a raw music lover.
The font I used throughout my magazine is minimalistic and simple, its to suggest that although
the indie lifestyle can be hectic, its simple and easy to connect with and understand which is what
I thought my target audience would understand. The cracked /reflective style header also reflects
the readers personality as I feel it shows a tainted side to the simplistic layout.
