Impact Of Technology On The Classroom
Reflection
Technology helps students in the learning procedure altering the way learning is conveyed.
Presently learning has turned into a customized and significant experience that addresses learners '
issues as contradicted to conventional instructor focused and content based training that places
essential accentuation on passing on settled assortments of data and survey students as latent
beneficiaries of learning. Henceforth, regardless of their own disparities, inclinations and histories,
technology convey individualized substance at the time and place students select (e–learning and
portable adapting) in this manner, taking so as to expand their learning spaces learning out of the
classroom (Domalewska, 2014). I had the opportunity to observe and design a technology checklist
to aid in evaluating the technology in the classroom. The technology list brought awareness to the
use of technology in a classroom setting. The first class I observed did a great job with following all
parts of the technology list. One could indicate that Ms. Lockhart has train her students on the
importance and use of technology. I thought her students were attentive and produce effectiveness
utilization of technology. In addition, I like how the small group transition flowed truly well with
the students. They knew what was expected and delivered. The second class I observed presented
the use of technology in a different form.

Chapter 3: Collision at Cajamarca
Write a paragraph explaining your views on the event of November 16, 1532. What strikes you the
most about this event? Why did Pizarro succeed?
On November 16, 1532 Francisco Pizarro conquered over the Incan emperor Atahualpa. Spaniards
massacre tens of thousands of Indians. At this time the use of steel swords were very beneficial,
because the Spaniards had them where the Incans did not. I believe that the victory of this invasion
was based off of the more–advanced ethnic–group, because the Spaniards had the more advanced
weapons and technology. This victory is a shock to me, because the Spaniards were un–aware of the
terrain and the Incans has the "home field" advantage. The reason Pizarro succeeded was he had
originally gained the trust of Atahualpa and then captured him and used his advanced weaponry to
conquer the Incans

Technology in the Classroom Essay
As we progress further into the 21st century, our society is quickly becoming more and more
integrated to technology. The creations of new laptops and tablets, and the easy access to new and
improved phones have driven younger generations to recruit to these advances as well. The quick
and widespread implementation of these technological advances has shaped the new way we
conduct our daily lives, as well as how knowledge is processed and taught in our classrooms.
Today's technology provides teachers, as well as students, with opportunities for teaching and
learning that were impossible in the past. Technology is being used as a tool to promote human
learning, not just calculators, but including Smart Boards, tablets (iPads), video ... Show more

When asked to write, young students often struggle to express their ideas on paper because they are
concentrating on how the write the specific letters, however through the use of technology "students
enhance their writing because they are not concentrating on how to write the letters, but on the flow
of ideas" (Hertzog and Klein 27). Students have successfully improved their writing skills through
the use of technological advancements while still going back to the "old fashioned way" of hand–
writing. Based on experiments done by Hertzog and Klein, they have found many advantages to
using technology in early childhood classrooms. While many supports the idea of technology being
implemented in educational plans, there are many who oppose and argue that technology in today's
classroom can take away important learning time and can also turn educational experiences into
games for students (Klaus 1). However, technology must be appropriately used and with well
trained teachers that can assist students to use these technological advancements for their
educational benefit. As Kenny mentions, integrating technology into the schoolroom is hard work
and can only succeed when

Technology In The Fertile Crescent
"Technology, in the form of weapons and transport, provides the direct means by which certain
peoples have expanded their realms and conquered other peoples" (Diamond 241). In the modern
world, weapons seem to define the outcomes of wars. Technology motivates the daily lives of
people internationally. Throughout history, weapons and technology have led to major conquests
and growths of human civilizations.
After 11,000 B.C., technology in the Fertile Crescent developed immensely. Inventions including
flint blades for harvesting, baskets and containers for collecting crops, and underground storage pits
made it possible for food production to occur. "These cumulative developments constituted the
unconscious first steps of plant domestication" (Diamond 111). Utilizing the further geographical
advantage of rich soil, people of the Fertile Crescent leapt into the world of food production. Food
production, in turn, yielded large food surpluses stored in baskets, allowing the society to move
toward a sedentary lifestyle and a more organized, specialized community. Simple agricultural tool

writing systems. Writing reached almost the entire world. Tales of conquest flooded the literate
world: "Written accounts of earlier expeditions motivated later ones, by describing the wealth and
fertile lands awaiting the conquerors. The accounts taught subsequent explorers what conditions to

Technology : The Advantages And Disadvantages Of...
Technology has changed how people learn over the years. It has affected how things are taught, and
how they are received and processed by the students. Teachers could post any information on a
specific website that the instructor provided and the students can view and reply to the post.
Students used to have to bring home a textbook every night, but with the modern technology, they
can log onto an online textbook. There are some instructors who believe that pencil and paper are
slowly dwindling down into nothingness. Other educators believe that technology has helped benefit
their student's education and don't worry about pencil and paper.
Technology has its advantages and disadvantages in the classroom. Compared to the positive effects,
the list of negatives are nowhere near as long. Some of the negative effects include not paying
attention in class, not being on task, or even playing a game in the middle of a lecture. Wolpert says
that "As technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis
have declined, while our visual skills have improved". This means that students are paying more
attention to technology and visual stimulants than books and worksheets. They would rather look up
the answer than do the work themselves. "In other words, kids need to be taught when to stop
clicking and start thinking more carefully. Increasingly, teachers are equipping students with means

Writing Is Itself A Technology Summary
The Influence of Technology in Writing
Technology plays a huge role in today's society. Humans have been using the technology for years
for almost everything in life. When it comes to today's generation, people tend to rely so much on
technology in order to help them with their writing. In the article "Writing Is Itself a Technology,"
Clinton R. Gardner writes about the importance of using technology, how it affects the student's
writing skill in a better way, and how it advances student writing. On the other hand, Norm
Goldstein, the author of "Speed Kills Good Writing Skills" stands against the usage of technology in
student's writing skill. Although many may argue about this topic, Gardner debates on this issue and
gives his readers well supportive evidence on why technology is not harmful for students in his
article. He provides some information concerning how it's sympathetic for students to use
technology in their writing. First, he mentions how writing and chatting online can be extremely
useful in order for students to get feedback regarding their writing. Second, they have the
opportunity to share their writing via online and can be seen by almost everyone around the world.
Third, it gives the ability for students to write in a well–structured way using the right words and
improve their grammar. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author, Gardner, mentions about how technology can assist the writers "From my observation,
student writers in 2005 display the same problems as their cohorts in 1990 displayed in dealing with
'big' issues like the development of ideas, the uses of evidence or the improvement of writing
methods, right down to sentence–level concerns such as run–on sentences, fragments or problematic
word usage" (par. 3). Utilizing the technology can give an assistance to become a better writer by
allowing the person to choose brilliant

My Writing, Reflection, And Technology In Academic Writing
When the semester began, I struggled with many of our learning outcomes. However, by completing
Project Four, I have made great advancements in my ability to read, write, reflect, and use
technology in academic writing. I have noticed that gradually my writing and comprehension have
grown. Therefore, my overall experience in English 1010 was great. Professor Jeff Pruchnic is a
great teacher, whom I learned I great deal from. I've always struggled with rhetorical analysis essays
in high school. In his class he made the essays seem easier than I remember and now I understand
each person part.
The reading objective helped me with my comprehension skills. In other words, I have developed
the skills to read a text and infer what the author's purpose and meaning of the text. In class, we did
various exercises as a class to help to try to find the main ideas of an article. We would pair off into
groups and annotate an article that Professor Pruchnic assigns to guidelines.
For example, Professor Pruchnic asked the class to annotate the article "Trump Tells Pence to Leave
NFL" and make our annotations with the understanding that we are going to generate a response to
the piece under review. After we complete our annotations, use the response templates in The
Warrior Writer to create an "agree" "disagree" and "agree and disagree" statement about arguments
or "sides" addressed in the article. Overall, all this practice helped me in the long run.
Writing helped me get all of my thoughts down before constructing my essays. In my years at high
school, I've always needed to write my rough draft before typing it because I felted that this was a
better way for me to get all the details down before I lose my train of thought. But, now there are
other ways that I have met that I believe will
work just as well. One of those ways was the "quotes in response exercise, which we had to choose
five quotes from an article and respond to them in full paragraphs.
This technique was an exercise that I enjoyed because I felt like it helped my essay better flow and
it made it easier to find main points to discuss. Another thing that helped my writing was the peer
edits. Most of the time their comments are helpful to me

Teaching and Learning in a Networked Composition Classroom
In her essay "Technology and Literacy: A Story about the Perils of Not Paying Attention," Cynthia
L. Selfe notes that "technology is either boring or frightening to most humanists; many teachers of
English composition feel it antithetical to their primary concerns and many believe it should not be
allowed to take up valuable scholarly time or the attention that could be best put to use in teaching
or the study of literacy" (Self 412). Looking around campus it takes little time to verify Selfe's
caution about indifference to computers: except in its uses as "a simple tool that individual faculty
members can use or ignore in their classrooms as they choose" (Self 414), computer ... Show more

This suggests a very real problem: how do instructors equip such students with the technology–
specific literacy skills they will need to thrive in an increasingly digital world, and at the same time
justify to the public the significant investment necessary to create computerized classroom space?
The intent of this essay is not to offer universal solutions to this problem, but rather to bring the
experiences of one particular computerized classroom, both positive and negative, into dialogue
with the numerous voices already speaking out about the role of computers in education. By doing
so, I hope to demonstrate how the human component of the technology–education equation–the
creative and adaptive abilities of the instructor, or "humanware1" –becomes an increasingly vital
aspect of computerized pedagogy, especially as the power of hardware and software becomes more
pervasive and perhaps threatening.
Reams of books and articles published during the last two decades2 testify forcefully of the
controversy raging over the impact, both positive and negative, that the infusion of new technology
into the classroom is having upon the way students learn and teachers teach. Ultimately, however,
these many voices can be roughly divided into two camps: those attempt to forward and perfect the
difficult task of using computers as teaching instruments, and those who will resist–many for
justifiable reasons which must be recognized and

Technology Is Eroding All Of Humanity
Over Use of Technology? How technology is eroding all of humanity.
Many people believe technology to be advancing humanity's capabilities, in reality, although there
are some advantages, it has many negative effects on society, and therefore the amount of
technology used should be reduced to ensure the continuing existence of mankind. People of all
ages from young children to adults use technology on a daily basis to learn and do things which
were once done manually. People are slowly losing the ability to do simple actions such as writing a
letter or spelling simple words. There is also an increasing number of health issues found to be the
result of excessive technology usage. To decrease the amount of social and medical conditions in
today's society the technology usage should be decreased and used more safely.
Although the amount of technology used should be reduced it is still a very useful utility and should
not be completely stopped. The development of new technologies, such as mobile phones,
Facebook, email, Skype and FaceTime, have made it easier for people to communicate with other
people at any time anywhere in the world. By developing new technology, society is able to quickly
send/receive messages. For example if you want to give a message to a friend or relative you can
just ring, text or email them, whereas before you would have to hand write a message which would
then be hand delivered.
Technology can also be useful when wanting to find out

Rhetorical Analysis: The Digital Parent Trap
Many Authors vary their usage of multiple rhetorical devices to persuade their readers into looking
at an argument from a different perspective. Dockterman uses these devices to persuade her readers
that early exposure to technology has its benefits. The Digital Parent Trap is an article written by
Eliana Dockterman published in 2013. In this article, Dockterman talks about how technology plays
a valuable part in American schools and how it affects these families. Dockterman shares multiple
points that support her argument, but she also talks about how parents feel about the technology that
is used in schools.Through the use of Logos and Pathos, Dockterman persuades her audience that
there are benefits to early exposure to technology

these social networks can improve these students lives by connecting them to more people who have
similar interests. This quote supports her argument because it makes the reader feel that they can let
their children use the technology so they can connect to more people who have the same interest or
it can make the child learn something new. In the beginning of the article Dockterman is writing
about how parents view technology and its role in the school system. She introduces various sources
such as the Grunwald Associates to say , "Barely half of U.S. parents agree that mobile technology
is should play a more prominent role in school"(Dockterman 1). Doctorman persuades the reader by
providing information that shows how many people think technology is important and by providing
a reliable source. She uses ethos by providing a credible source. This source provides a fact that can
lead the reader into thinking that the chances are 50/50 and that they should change that. The other
reasons that Dockterman provides can persuade more

Dumbest Generation Thesis
Synthesis Essay The younger generation of Americans, those under the age of thirty, are often
criticized as being the "dumbest generation". Many Americans blame technology for making "goods
so plentiful, schooling so accessible, diversion so easy, and liberties so copious" (Bauerlein). Many
are posing the question: Is the increasing ease in life causing our intelligence to slip? Those under
thirty are not the dumbest generation, in fact, technology is expanding, changing, and pushing in
new directions intelligence and mental capacity. Technology has allowed young Americans to
transform the way they think and learn. According to a 2008 study by Mizuko Ito, the internet has
allowed the flourishing of self–directed learning. The enormous possibilities the internet offers,
allows people to delve into topics or research a variety of areas that interest them. People can now
explore their curiosity endlessly. Researches have also noticed a change in literacy among the
younger generation. The daily texts, tweets, and emails people send, keep them writing. According
to Andrea Lunsford, all of these little writings add up and is pushing ... Show more content on

Computer and video games, for example, challenge mental dexterity. The complexity of the
environments and worlds the players must navigate, encourage the growth of their problem solving
skills (Johnson). The older generation often scrutinizes the younger Americans on not being to
answer "general knowledge" questions. However, this is not the result of dumbness but of choice.
Young Americans are able to "think critically and logically, analyze an argument, to learn and
remember, to see analogies, to distinguish fact from opinion." (Begley). Knowing the capital of
Denmark, and other such facts, is not important to this generation, and therefore, they are evolving

Analysis Of Ted Talk : Connected But Alone By Sherry Turkle
Over time, we have developed more and more advanced technology from radios to robots, this has
impacted us in a way no one would imagine. In Sherry Turkle's Ted Talk "Connected, but alone?,"
Turkle clarifies how technology is redefining human connection. She points out that our cellphones
are keeping us away from interacting with society and has a more significant influence on our
communication in person than online. In addition, we tend to seek social media as a way of comfort
and attention, and the more we are using our phones the more isolated and alone we become. Is
technology really redefining human connection? I see my friends around me on their phones
constantly and even myself. Do these individuals using technology to communicate ... Show more

On the other hand, some see technology as detrimental. In David Malki's blog "Truth Stuff: Socrates
vs. the Written Word," Malki discusses how Socrates was against writing; Socrates preferred talking
over writing because writing cannot defend itself in dialogue, and thus cannot effectively teach
anything worth knowing. For example, Socrates was known to be opposed to writing as a
technology because he believed "[I]f you question [writing], wishing to know about their sayings,
they always say only one and the same thing... it knows not to whom to speak or not to speak; when
ill–treated or unjustly reviled it always needs its father to help it; for it has no power to protect or
help itself" (Malki). By saying writing needs its "father," Socrates is saying writing needs speaking.
Socrates's dispute about how writing cannot be replaced with speaking is similar to how
technology–like cellphones, internet, computer, etc.–cannot be replaced with communication.
Socrates's argument connects to Turkle's Ted Talk in that writing was considered a technology back
then and Socrates was against this type of technology. Now cellphones are a type of technology and
a large amount of the population like Turkle believes we should limit ourselves in cellphone usage.
Turkle asserts, "we're getting used to a new way of being alone together" (Turkle 00:04:25–
00:04:28). I could not agree more with this statement because the current generation

Writing with Technology Essay
Writing with Technology
The task was seemingly straightforward; create a piece of writing without using a single form of
technology. I didn't think this would be much of a problem. I figured I could hand–write something
instead of typing it or using a word processor and that would meet the requirements of the project.
However, according to Dennis Baron in his essay From Pencils to Pixels the pencil is, in fact, a form
of technology. Evidently, it was invented "by joiners, woodworkers specializing in making furniture,
to scribe measurements for wood" (Tribble/Trubek, 42). Adding further to my obstacles, paper,
being a created object, was not an option as well. This was turning out to be harder than I thought.

For the base of my project, I arranged rows of sticks that I would tie together with the vines. I tried
to pull the vines apart to make them easier to tie with, as I had seen Tom Hanks do in the movie Cast
Away, but I was unable to tear a strip that was much longer than the length of my finger. The vines,
also being quite slippery from the juice inside the stems, would simply not allow me to get a very
good grip on them. Foregoing the vine idea, I decided to try and pack dirt on top of the sticks to
create a forced base. Although the dirt was moist, it still wouldn't pack well and kept cracking and
crumbling.
After laboring to press grass stems into the dirt, while picking up the pieces of mud that were
accumulating at my feet, I finally got the first word imprinted with the grass and was finally ready
to put the berry stems in it to make the word stand out against the black of the dirt base. When I
plucked the berry from its stem, a deep red juice oozed onto my fingertips. The idea struck me like a
lightening bolt! I could use the berry juice as ink and write on one of the pieces of wood I had
gathered from the yard. I suddenly felt very foolish for not thinking of this much simpler project
earlier. I took a piece of bark and used it as a bowl and smashed four berries onto it with the end of a
stick. I then took another piece of bark and on it wrote, "from this

Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process
Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001)
concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of
technology, direct instruction, and committed well–trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham & and
Perin (2007a), and Rogers & and Graham, (2008), agreed that technology makes the process of
writing easier and often provides very specific types of support. Word processing provides at least
four advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional–looking, (c) typing
provides an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d)
word–processing programs have software programs, such as spell and stylistic checkers designed to
reduce specific types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer's spoken words are
transcribed to electronic text) and word–prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces
the key strokes by predicting the writer's next word). This is helpful for students with difficulties
with spelling and the mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software
can aide with the planning process, and the use of computer networks and the Internet can help to
promote communication and collaboration among writers.
Students prefer technology–based assignments and are found to use more words and an expanded
vocabulary when expressing themselves in blog posts (Berezina, 2011;

The Importance Of Writing And Technology
Writing and Technology Believe it or not, writing takes place in almost all aspects of our everyday
life. As a future teacher, it will be important that I have the best education to enhance my student's
writing. I will need to understand what type of learners my students are and how to accommodate
writing based on each learner. Standards also play an important role in student writing, standards
help guide students to the grade level in which they need to be. Various factors can impact a
student's writing abilities, I've found many online tools that will help me teach writing and help my
students become motivated in writing. The first online tool, Education World, provides various
tools, such as Google Docs, 3D Writer, Button Talk, and Poetry Forge. This site will benefit all types
of learners. Google Docs benefits visual learners and auditory learners because students will be able
to see what is being typed or listen to what is being typed. This standard could align with Text Types

The Impact Of Modern Digital Technology
From the way we think, to the way we communicate to the way we shop, modern digital technology
has influenced all aspects of our daily lives. Modern digital technology refers to social media,
tablets, smartphones, and laptops. Unfortunately, the education industry has been slow in adjusting
to this change. It's time for educators to keep up with the new generation by implementing modern
digital technology in the education system, as it will enhance a student's learning, and help develop
practical skills; opposed to the traditional model of education with minimum use of digital
technology in learning.
The Student Perspective
Technology is an easily accessible platform for students to collaborate, and assists in the
development of creativity and innovative ideas. Whether students are working together in–class or
outside school, modern technology allows students to share ideas, resources, and work together
simultaneously.
Teacher B elaborated most of her students are fond of Google Drive, and it is especially useful for
group projects since students can work simultaneously on a report or a presentation, regardless of
their location. She further explained it has helped improve the quality of work, especially for
reports. She explained that students used to divide the contents of a report in half, then combine
their proportions together once finished. This resulted in an inconsistency of tone, and writing
structure. However, in the recent years she reported that Google has

Inventing A Writing Technology Essay examples
"Inventing" A Writing Technology
According to Walter Ong, an influential scholar of the relationship between technology and media,
"Literacy is imperious. It tends to arrogate to itself supreme power by taking itself as normative for
human expression and thought. This is particularly true in high–technology cultures, which are built
on literacy of necessity and which encourage the impression that literacy is an always to be expected
and even natural state of affairs" (316). Ong would probably agree that literacy is so embedded in
our current technological culture that it has become part of the standard of living, a necessary
requirement for functioning in this highly professionalized world. However, the point of Ong's prior

Portability was described as the extent to which the text could be moved or carried. Nature referred
to the extent to which the materials used in creating the text and/or writing surface were found in
nature and not manufactured or highly processed. During this experiment, I tried to consider what
completely natural materials I could find. I resorted to using materials found in my backyard
including rocks, dirt, sand, sticks, grass, and leaves. The permanence criterion of the assignment
narrowed my choices by eliminating writing in the dirt, sand, or mud or with grass or leaves. Wind
or rain would erase any writing created using these materials. The issue of portability further
narrowed my decision to use a small, hand–held, sharp rock to scrape or chisel words into a larger
stone which was able to be carried. The stone needed to have a writing surface large enough to
chisel words but not so large that it could not be easily transported. All in all, inventing a technology
which was creative was somewhat of a problem when considering permanence and portability and
was overlooked as a criterion.
Although the solution to the assignment may sound easy, the creation process was actually very
challenging. One reason may be that "Oral speech is fully natural to human beings in the sense that
every human being in every culture who is not physiologically or psychologically impaired learns to
talk" (Ong, 322). In U.S. culture, oral speech and writing are

How Technology Has Impacted Education
Introduction
Education is defined as 'the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing
the powers of reasoning and judgement, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually
for mature life.' A good education leads to knowledge, career progression, enlightenment and helps a
nation progress, as John F. Kennedy said; "Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our
progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource." The introduction of
technology in education has impacted education both for good and bad. According to the Oxford
dictionary, Technology is; 'machinery and devices that are developed from scientific knowledge to
increase or better, everyday functions.' Technology used in education, is part of a large debate over
whether it is improving educational outcomes in students. Some say technology is revolutionizing
education for the better, and others say it is a trend that offer/s no specific improvements to
education. Although technology can never replace a good quality teacher, the advantages and
benefits of technology, positively supplements a bridge between education and the technological
world, hence offers students the marketable job skills they need in order to satisfy in the evolving
technological world.
Relevant interviews and surveys were conducted, to discover peoples understanding of technology.

Reflections On Sandbox Time . Results. As A Part Of The
Reflections on Sandbox Time Results As a part of the Professional Development training, we
introduced tangible technologies to the teachers of a university funded preschool. We presented
KIBO, Cubetto, Sphero and Puzzlet to the teachers. While KIBO and Cubetto are screen free
tangible technologies, Sphero and Puzzlet are accompanied by an Ipad. After we introduced the
tangible technologies, we asked eight teachers to ponder the ways of implementing these tangible
technologies to their current projects or their classroom settings. The teachers wrote their ideas of
utilizing those tangible technologies to post–its, which were then placed on poster paper and

Similarly, Cubetto was suggested to use for creating a route for delivery and a map with pictures
could be used and the students could have Cubetto deliver mail to each of the pictures. The
participants additionally suggested to utilize Sphero as well as using the chariot as a way to
transport items from place to place. Their ideas for Puzzlet are focused on an overview of geography
– a way to practice following directions and physically acting the directions out. Like the utilization
of the tangible technologies with the Mail and Post Office project, the teachers also pointed out that
the tangible technologies could also be used to solve a labyrinth or a maze. Another part of
Geography that was focused on was the ability Sphero and Cubetto have to move around. For both
tangible technologies, exploration and underwater retrievals were mentioned as ways to use the
tangible technologies to go where the students or people may be unable to physically go to
themselves. These tangible technologies were also thought of as being able to assist in natural
disaster rescues where both could navigate rubble in an area. Math The participants additionally
considered utilizing the motion skill of the tangible technologies on the subject area Math. For
instance, the teachers noted to utilize Sphero and Cubetto follow the outlines of a line, which might

Black Hole Of Technology Summary
"The black hole of endless, unimportant streams of technology–enabled information is devouring
everyone living in the 21st century." Words once said by Leena Khan highlighting the downfalls of
technology. Leena Khan in the writing, "Black Hole of Technology" argues much better points than
Stefan Etienne in the writing, "Teens and Technology Share a Future." Consisting of strong points,
having highly effective structure and claims, and it has good structure are all reasons "The Black
Hole of Technology" is superior to "Teens and Technology."
The passage, "Black Hole of Technology" has many points that stand out. The author had reasonable
opinions which were shown from a real experience the author explained. The text has strong reasons
like the fact that technology isolates us from the rest of the world, keeping us indoors. When Leena's
friends were all glued to their phones, she said, "I, on the other hand, glanced out the window
separating us from the beautiful weather outside." This proves that technology is not always the best
form of entertainment. When we are on our device, it is kind of like we form a barrier to the real
world, we get lost in the technology world for a while. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has a clear lack of scientific evidence, but that's no the purpose of this piece. The author intended
to write about how her quality of life is increased without technology, not to list off statistics. Some
people also criticize the piece for having not a wide enough target audience. This can be true for
writings, but in this circumstance, it is not. The author is arguing how teenagers are sucked into the
black hole, and how it affects each other. This whole passage is supposed to be for teenagers.
Therefore, the author does not have to narrow of a target

The Shallows Essay
In today's era, we depend a lot on technology and the internet. For daily things such as school, work,
communication, and so much more. There is controversy between eras due to if the internet is a
positive or negative contribution. In the book, The Shallows: What the internet is doing to our
brains, by Nicholas Carr, it speaks about how the internet is changing a huge aspect of our lives.
From our thought process to our attention span. I believe that this generation and era, all together as
a community, is obsessed with the internet. I support Carr's side of writing the book because of the
amount of time and usage we sacrifice to the internet. We eventually learn to be so attached to this

In Chapter 6, it speaks about the challenges we have of being able to read a physical book. We have
a constant need and attraction to the internet which distracts us which makes us incapable. Most
students attempt to read a book in one sitting, hoping that they will succeed but in the harsh reality,
it is too difficult. Even if the phones, computers, or any form of tech is put away, we will find a new
type of distraction. Another huge problem with media is, "Changes in reading style will also bring
changes in writing style, as authors and their publishers adapt to readers' new habits and
expectations." (6.104) Meaning that with these changes of google and the internet, physical writing
will transform in some way. From the vocabulary that is being used or the tone that needs to show,
writers will need to to find ways to attract new readers. Students these days truly are dependent on
google and it becomes a challenge because there's always an option or urge to cheat. There are easy
outlets to books such as SparkNotes, eNotes, and so much more, but it could never compare to the
actual book. Carr words it as "In the choices we have made, consciously or not, about how we use
our computers, we have rejected the intellectual tradition of solitary, single–minded concentration,
the ethic that the book bestowed on us." The internet has given us a challenge which

In his article, Programmed for Love, Jeffrey R. Young makes many interesting points on how social
technology can have different effects on people's lives. He includes an interview with Sherry Turkle
who had experienced the impact of social technology personally in her life. Young supports his
writing by including several different stories of witnessing interactions between humans and robots/

technology like smartphones and laptops, that we turn to them to occupy and comfort us so much
we forget how to function without them. Young also incorporates Turkle's field research other than

By Any Other Name With the advancements of technology, what past generations have defined as
traditionally being 'intelligent' is outdated in today's age and Millennials have found new ways to be
just as capable as the old generation. Elevating learning in a way that was once unimaginable in the
past, technology is forging a path to open a brighter future built on achieving knowledge by
technology and Millennials are taking wide strides across that path.
Has technology truly been nothing, but a detriment on this current generation and society as a

With all the technological prowess of the internet has to offer, it seems it hasn't done much to slow
the decline in 'general knowledge', but is it a lack of intelligence or is it because of a deviation in
priorities within society and what's to be expected? Millennials now don't have to worry about
getting "drafted and shipped to Vietnam" (Source 2) like the old generation did, it was a necessity, if
not important, to know what political affairs were going on. Even though it's just as important to
know about your politicians back then as it is now, it isn't so much 'needing' to know in order to
escape war and other pitfalls, but 'wanting' to know in order to stay well informed, which happened
as a result of shifting priorities and a society, not due to general lack of intelligence. Still, there are
other ways to be informed and be knowledgeable, especially in this new age that is gradually,
moving away from "callused hands to a nation of agile brains", says cognitive scientist Marcel just
of Carnegie Mellon Univeristy (Source 2). So what's to say in this new digital age, Millennials
haven't already more than prove themselves enough of being as intelligent as the ones prior, it's a
matter of redefining knowledge to fit the culture of each coming generation that suits them.
Millennials are characterized by technology and technology characterizes them, such has happened

The Changing Of Mind By Nicholas Carr
The Changing of Minds
The advancement of technology emblematizes humanity's intelligence and capacity to conceptualize
what has not been done before, expand humanity's capability, and strive to improve the place we
inhabit. We sometimes fear the advancement of technology because it's new and "uncharted
territory". Technology undeniably and unarguably defines our world, and choosing to hide from
technology and the role it plays in our world, only hinders the leadership capabilities of those who
will soon lead this nation. Nicholas Carr, in "Is Google Making Us Stupid?", describes how
technology changes how we think, and consequently, the way we learn and process new
information.
Each major technological advancement, like writing, the clock, ... Show more content on

It can be beneficial to allow us access to a wide variety of information we, otherwise, would not
have. However, we should also be careful to not develop an overdependence on technology. If we
become entirely reliant on technology, and remain incapable of doing tasks on our own, without
understanding the concepts and ideas we are making decisions with, then we are not leaders. We are
simply a person using a tool and hoping that we get the right outcome. If we learn how to properly
manage the use of technology, then we become a leader and a tactician, someone who knows both
what they are doing and how to use the technology at hand. The leader that is capable of that, will
push the army forward to fight the type of war our world is pushing towards. Maybe this
technological advancement is, as Carr argues, the one that has gone too far that will drain us of who
we are and cause us to become "pancake people" (Carr 580). But until we are able to determine
whether or not the internet is as harmful as it is believed to be, cadets need to learn how to
effectively use technology to be prepared for the world that we will enter into when we

Technology Negatively Impacting Education
In today's world, there is no uncertainty that technology has grown to be a part of our daily life.
Although everyone's opinion is different, some may say it is positively impacting education while
others say its negatively impacting education. According to the articles "Texting and Writing" by
Michaela Cullington and "Wikipedia: Write First, Ask Questions Later" by Dennis Baron, appear to
believe that technology is negatively affecting education. Technology can negatively impact one's
education by the ability to use proper grammar, inhibiting writing skills, and just being plain out
lazy.
Grammar is defined as the way sentences of a language are constructed. In the article "Texting and
Writing" it states how teachers have reported findings that students are using abbreviations for
words such as "2" for "to" or "gr8" for "great" (404). Being in the habit of texting and using
abbreviations can cause students not to use proper grammar that should be used in formal writing.

It's simply a way of interacting with someone. According to the article "Texting and Writing" by
Michaela Cullington, many say that text messages lack emotion (405). This is because text
messages have a tendency to be short, concise, and to the point (405). Not implying emotion or
showing how someone feels about a particular situation the other person that is being communicated

that one English teacher believes that the texting language is second nature to her students (404).

1. I personally would rather have a conversation with someone in person. I like being able to focus
on the person I am talking to and see their facial reactions to what I am saying. If I can't see their
face, I feel like I am lacking the ability to fully listen to everything they have to say. In person I can
also see if the person I'm having a conversation with is listening to me as well. For example, when I
have a conversation with my boyfriend in person there are times where I know he isn't fully
listening to what I am saying because he is constantly fidgeting, playing with something, or looking

Writing and Technology
"The fact that we do not commonly feel the influence of writing on our thoughts shows that we have
interiorized the technology of writing so deeply that without tremendous effort we cannot separate it
from ourselves or even recognize its presence and influence (Ong, 317)."
In this modern age of computers, disposable pens, and mechanical pencils, it is easy to forget that at
one time writing was not so simple or convenient. Most of us have ". . . become so used to
composing virtual prose at a keyboard . . . (Baron 36)," that the thought of writing anything out by

My first idea came up short, so I decided to try a different approach. Instead of using a rock as my
paper, I thought I would find one I could use as a pencil. It did not take too long before I found a
rock with some good edges I could use to cut and scrape with. I then proceeded to look for a piece
of wood I could record some very deep and profound thoughts on ("This pen sucks. I miss my
keyboard."). After a while I located a suitable branch, big enough to write on and small enough to
carry around. With my primitive version of the pencil and paper in hand, I set out to work.
It was very hard. Etching words into the branch was a slow and tedious process. I had not finished
three letters before I started getting painful blisters on my hand. It is difficult to write in a straight
line and with even spacing and letter height when you are scraping a branch with a rock. I ended up
cutting my writing short after my hand started to bleed. I don't think that my rock and branch idea is
going to replace the P.C. in American homes anytime soon.
This assignment has definitely made me realize that like many people today, I ". . . take word
processing as a given (Baron 36)." The first writers must have had a very difficult time. Crude tools
are cumbersome and messy. The process is slow, tiresome, frustrating and worst of all, it can be
painful. It is a testament to human perseverance that any strides in original writing

The Reflection Of My Writing On Technology And Technology
Most of the time when I am writing a paper, I do not have a choice on what I am writing. But when I
do get to choose my topic, then I can write about something that I enjoy and feel passionate about.
In my experience with writing, I have chosen many topics. But most of them I probably did not
enjoy writing about that particular topic. There are very few papers that I have written where I really
enjoyed writing. But the paper that I am going to talk about was different for me because I wanted
people to understand my point of view on the subject. And so, I felt compelled to write about the
topic that I chose for this particular essay that I wrote in 9th grade. It is about technology, and its
role and effect on society.
The paper I wrote on technology was an essay. Like most essays, it had 5 paragraphs. An
introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. My teacher also had me
write an outline to the essay, to help me stay organized in my thoughts. In the introduction
paragraph I summarize my main points. I chose three points about technology that I would mention
in each of the body paragraphs. In my first body paragraph, I talk about how technology has affected
education and the way people can learn. In my second body paragraph, I talk about how technology
has changed the way we communicate with people. And in the third paragraph, I talk about how
technology has changed the way we entertain ourselves.
I chose to write about technology partially because at the time that I was writing that essay, a close
family member in my household was experiencing health issues when they were around technology.
And so I had to live with very little–to–no technology for about a year. And that probably sounds
like I was living in a different time era, and sometimes it felt like that. It was really a drastic time for
me and my family. Because in this world, technology is used for everything. And so we had to adapt
to not being with it when we were home. It was a really different experience. But it happened for a
reason. And I learned how to live without constant technology.
Technology has changed education for the better. People have so much knowledge at their fingertips

Technology: What Makes UScially Distracted Or Helpful?
Ok, let me start off by saying that a screen free week sounds like a fantastic idea to me. It will give

problems like getting distracted or even cause forgetfulness and attention problems. It can even
crave us to be multitasking and cause us to get injured. Everyday in school, we always get distracted

Further on, new technology has become a threat to our brains because it causes distractions. I
personally have suffered from distractions on the Net while doing school work on it, and also while
I use the Net to read. Some examples of distractions on the Net are advertisements, and getting
carried away browsing other websites. Another reason why new technology has become a threat to
our brains, is because we value efficiency over quality, which is detrimental both to our brains and
quality of our work. For example, I have found out that while it is easier and quicker to acquire
information on the Net, it is harder for our minds to process the information and our quality of work
is sometimes poor. Another reason why the Net is a threat to our brains and detrimental to our mind
is the essay "Does Texting Affect Writing?" by Michaela Cullington. In the essay, the author
Michaela Cullington talks about and asks the question if texting is affecting our ability to write. One
example of how texting can affect our writing is according to Cullington, "In order to more quickly

technology has skyrocketed businesses and eased our lives as a whole in society. However,

The National Writing Commission has reinforced this idea with a number of statistics. They have
found that the majority fourth graders only spend three hours or less per week on writing. They also
found that among 12th graders, 40% of them say they never or hardly ever write a paper of at least 3
pages in an English class. With these statistics in mind, it's no wonder that College Board has
decided to add an essay to the writing portion of the SATs (Poor Writing Blamed 1). It has also been
found that recently, as more college graduates are entering the work force, employers seem to be
extremely dissatisfied with their writing abilities (Toner 1). The study of how the human mind
works and how it develops such writing skills has always been fascinating. Although the computer
has helped us in other skillful areas, writing skills does not appear to be one of them. Four specific
areas in technology seem to be a major part of the cause to this writing deficiency. These areas are
Blackboard, instant messaging, keyboarding skills, and e–mail. When used together, they work as a
powerhouse for destroying writing skills.
The debate between tradition and technology on campus has been a grueling one. Online resources
such as Blackboard have been extremely useful, but there is a fine line between useful and harmful
in this case. Blackboard is an online classroom setting,

Is Google Making Us Stupid Analysis
In "Is Google Making Us Stupid," Nicolas Carr demonstrates his point of view regarding the
negative effect of google on the function of the brain. Carr believes that Google is having a
tremendously negative effect on the function of the brain, and the fact that google is allowing
individuals to solve complex problems quicker is causing damage to the brain. Neurons are
significantly important particles in the brain, when the brain is not used for solving complex
problems those neurons are most likely to die. Additionally, excessive usage of google results in
weakening of reading and writing skills. The majority of the people who are exposed to the usage of
google are noticing a dramatic change in function of their brain. However, as the number of google
users increases, more people are starting to have difficulties with sample skills such as reading and
writing.
I believe that this source plays an essential role in my project. This source explains to the reader as
to why using excessive technologies are damaging our brain, and it also informs the reader to use
websites such as google as rarely as possible because most people who are addicted to these
websites are facing extremely difficult time with reading, writing, and intellectuality.

Technology And Technology Essay
In current times technology has allowed almost anyone to connect such as, texting, calling, email,
and other forms of chat. However, with all this technology how is it affecting our interpersonal
relationships? Technology is ripping the human connection apart due to, people being dependent on
their devices, we text more than we talk, and children being exposed to technology sooner.
Technology is causing people to be dependent on their devices for communication. Larry D. Rosen
is a psychology professor at California State University and he wrote an article about how
technology has made people addicted and dependent on their devices. Rosen wrote, (2015) "An
important aspect of technology addiction is that it interferes with "normal" life ... Show more

People no longer make the human connection while hanging out, and some would rather be glued to
their phones instead of being in the moment. When people communicate through text they are
unable to convey emotions through the text however, when they talk face to face they can hear and
see the emotion in the other person. So, by using technology to communicate they are not effective
because we are unable to make the human connection with someone and communicate effectively.
With current technological advances children are being exposed to technology at earlier ages. This
early exposer could cause youth to find material not suitable for their age this could also expose
them to other children which could result in bullying. Tori DeAngellis said (2011), "About 40
Percent of bullying still takes place in person, compared with 10 percent through phone calls, 14
percent by text messages, 17 percent online and 10 percent in some other way" (p. 2). Tori
DeAngellis fails to point out that 51 percent of bullying takes place online which could result in
children being bullied which might result in situations that children are unable to understand or
handle properly. Also, children using technology to communicate through text or email may have
grammatical errors because they may use slang or abbreviation. Ruth Campell is a reporter for the
southern Missourian and she covers K–12 learning. Ruth Campbell (2015) said, "Students

Impact Of Technology On The Classroom

  • 1. Impact Of Technology On The Classroom Reflection Technology helps students in the learning procedure altering the way learning is conveyed. Presently learning has turned into a customized and significant experience that addresses learners ' issues as contradicted to conventional instructor focused and content based training that places essential accentuation on passing on settled assortments of data and survey students as latent beneficiaries of learning. Henceforth, regardless of their own disparities, inclinations and histories, technology convey individualized substance at the time and place students select (e–learning and portable adapting) in this manner, taking so as to expand their learning spaces learning out of the classroom (Domalewska, 2014). I had the opportunity to observe and design a technology checklist to aid in evaluating the technology in the classroom. The technology list brought awareness to the use of technology in a classroom setting. The first class I observed did a great job with following all parts of the technology list. One could indicate that Ms. Lockhart has train her students on the importance and use of technology. I thought her students were attentive and produce effectiveness utilization of technology. In addition, I like how the small group transition flowed truly well with the students. They knew what was expected and delivered. The second class I observed presented the use of technology in a different form. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why did Pizarro succeed? On November 16, 1532 Francisco Pizarro conquered over the Incan emperor Atahualpa. Spaniards massacre tens of thousands of Indians. At this time the use of steel swords were very beneficial, because the Spaniards had them where the Incans did not. I believe that the victory of this invasion was based off of the more–advanced ethnic–group, because the Spaniards had the more advanced weapons and technology. This victory is a shock to me, because the Spaniards were un–aware of the terrain and the Incans has the "home field" advantage. The reason Pizarro succeeded was he had originally gained the trust of Atahualpa and then captured him and used his advanced weaponry to conquer the Incans Chapter 4: Farmer Power Write a paragraph explaining the chart. • 5. Technology in the Classroom Essay As we progress further into the 21st century, our society is quickly becoming more and more integrated to technology. The creations of new laptops and tablets, and the easy access to new and improved phones have driven younger generations to recruit to these advances as well. The quick and widespread implementation of these technological advances has shaped the new way we conduct our daily lives, as well as how knowledge is processed and taught in our classrooms. Today's technology provides teachers, as well as students, with opportunities for teaching and learning that were impossible in the past. Technology is being used as a tool to promote human learning, not just calculators, but including Smart Boards, tablets (iPads), video ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When asked to write, young students often struggle to express their ideas on paper because they are concentrating on how the write the specific letters, however through the use of technology "students enhance their writing because they are not concentrating on how to write the letters, but on the flow of ideas" (Hertzog and Klein 27). Students have successfully improved their writing skills through the use of technological advancements while still going back to the "old fashioned way" of hand– writing. Based on experiments done by Hertzog and Klein, they have found many advantages to using technology in early childhood classrooms. While many supports the idea of technology being implemented in educational plans, there are many who oppose and argue that technology in today's classroom can take away important learning time and can also turn educational experiences into games for students (Klaus 1). However, technology must be appropriately used and with well trained teachers that can assist students to use these technological advancements for their educational benefit. • 6. Technology In The Fertile Crescent "Technology, in the form of weapons and transport, provides the direct means by which certain peoples have expanded their realms and conquered other peoples" (Diamond 241). In the modern world, weapons seem to define the outcomes of wars. Technology motivates the daily lives of people internationally. Throughout history, weapons and technology have led to major conquests and growths of human civilizations. After 11,000 B.C., technology in the Fertile Crescent developed immensely. Inventions including flint blades for harvesting, baskets and containers for collecting crops, and underground storage pits made it possible for food production to occur. "These cumulative developments constituted the unconscious first steps of plant domestication" (Diamond 111). Utilizing the further geographical advantage of rich soil, people of the Fertile Crescent leapt into the world of food production. Food production, in turn, yielded large food surpluses stored in baskets, allowing the society to move toward a sedentary lifestyle and a more organized, specialized community. • 7. Technology : The Advantages And Disadvantages Of... Technology has changed how people learn over the years. It has affected how things are taught, and how they are received and processed by the students. Teachers could post any information on a specific website that the instructor provided and the students can view and reply to the post. Students used to have to bring home a textbook every night, but with the modern technology, they can log onto an online textbook. There are some instructors who believe that pencil and paper are slowly dwindling down into nothingness. Other educators believe that technology has helped benefit their student's education and don't worry about pencil and paper. Technology has its advantages and disadvantages in the classroom. Compared to the positive effects, the list of negatives are nowhere near as long. Some of the negative effects include not paying attention in class, not being on task, or even playing a game in the middle of a lecture. Wolpert says that "As technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have improved". This means that students are paying more attention to technology and visual stimulants than books and worksheets. They would rather look up the answer than do the work themselves. • 8. Writing Is Itself A Technology Summary The Influence of Technology in Writing Technology plays a huge role in today's society. Humans have been using the technology for years for almost everything in life. When it comes to today's generation, people tend to rely so much on technology in order to help them with their writing. In the article "Writing Is Itself a Technology," Clinton R. Gardner writes about the importance of using technology, how it affects the student's writing skill in a better way, and how it advances student writing. On the other hand, Norm Goldstein, the author of "Speed Kills Good Writing Skills" stands against the usage of technology in student's writing skill. Although many may argue about this topic, Gardner debates on this issue and gives his readers well supportive evidence on why technology is not harmful for students in his article. He provides some information concerning how it's sympathetic for students to use technology in their writing. First, he mentions how writing and chatting online can be extremely useful in order for students to get feedback regarding their writing. Second, they have the opportunity to share their writing via online and can be seen by almost everyone around the world. • 9. My Writing, Reflection, And Technology In Academic Writing When the semester began, I struggled with many of our learning outcomes. However, by completing Project Four, I have made great advancements in my ability to read, write, reflect, and use technology in academic writing. I have noticed that gradually my writing and comprehension have grown. Therefore, my overall experience in English 1010 was great. Professor Jeff Pruchnic is a great teacher, whom I learned I great deal from. I've always struggled with rhetorical analysis essays in high school. In his class he made the essays seem easier than I remember and now I understand each person part. The reading objective helped me with my comprehension skills. In other words, I have developed the skills to read a text and infer what the author's purpose and meaning of the text. In class, we did various exercises as a class to help to try to find the main ideas of an article. We would pair off into groups and annotate an article that Professor Pruchnic assigns to guidelines. For example, Professor Pruchnic asked the class to annotate the article "Trump Tells Pence to Leave NFL" and make our annotations with the understanding that we are going to generate a response to the piece under review. After we complete our annotations, use the response templates in The Warrior Writer to create an "agree" "disagree" and "agree and disagree" statement about arguments or "sides" addressed in the article. Overall, all this practice helped me in the long run. Writing helped me get all of my thoughts down before constructing my essays. In my years at high school, I've always needed to write my rough draft before typing it because I felted that this was a better way for me to get all the details down before I lose my train of thought. But, now there are other ways that I have met that I believe will work just as well. One of those ways was the "quotes in response exercise, which we had to choose five quotes from an article and respond to them in full paragraphs. This technique was an exercise that I enjoyed because I felt like it helped my essay better flow and it made it easier to find main points to discuss. Another thing that helped my writing was the peer edits. Most of the time their comments are helpful to me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teaching and Learning in a Networked Composition Classroom In her essay "Technology and Literacy: A Story about the Perils of Not Paying Attention," Cynthia L. This suggests a very real problem: how do instructors equip such students with the technology– specific literacy skills they will need to thrive in an increasingly digital world, and at the same time justify to the public the significant investment necessary to create computerized classroom space? By doing so, I hope to demonstrate how the human component of the technology–education equation–the creative and adaptive abilities of the instructor, or "humanware1" –becomes an increasingly vital aspect of computerized pedagogy, especially as the power of hardware and software becomes more pervasive and perhaps threatening. Reams of books and articles published during the last two decades2 testify forcefully of the controversy raging over the impact, both positive and negative, that the infusion of new technology into the classroom is having upon the way students learn and teachers teach. Ultimately, however, these many voices can be roughly divided into two camps: those attempt to forward and perfect the difficult task of using computers as teaching instruments, and those who will resist–many for justifiable reasons which must be recognized and ... • 11. Technology Is Eroding All Of Humanity Over Use of Technology? How technology is eroding all of humanity. Many people believe technology to be advancing humanity's capabilities, in reality, although there are some advantages, it has many negative effects on society, and therefore the amount of technology used should be reduced to ensure the continuing existence of mankind. People of all ages from young children to adults use technology on a daily basis to learn and do things which were once done manually. People are slowly losing the ability to do simple actions such as writing a letter or spelling simple words. There is also an increasing number of health issues found to be the result of excessive technology usage. To decrease the amount of social and medical conditions in today's society the technology usage should be decreased and used more safely. Although the amount of technology used should be reduced it is still a very useful utility and should not be completely stopped. The development of new technologies, such as mobile phones, Facebook, email, Skype and FaceTime, have made it easier for people to communicate with other people at any time anywhere in the world. By developing new technology, society is able to quickly send/receive messages. For example if you want to give a message to a friend or relative you can just ring, text or email them, whereas before you would have to hand write a message which would then be hand delivered. Those under thirty are not the dumbest generation, in fact, technology is expanding, changing, and pushing in new directions intelligence and mental capacity. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, some see technology as detrimental. In David Malki's blog "Truth Stuff: Socrates vs. the Written Word," Malki discusses how Socrates was against writing; Socrates preferred talking over writing because writing cannot defend itself in dialogue, and thus cannot effectively teach anything worth knowing. For example, Socrates was known to be opposed to writing as a technology because he believed "[I]f you question [writing], wishing to know about their sayings, they always say only one and the same thing... it knows not to whom to speak or not to speak; when ill–treated or unjustly reviled it always needs its father to help it; for it has no power to protect or help itself" (Malki). By saying writing needs its "father," Socrates is saying writing needs speaking. Socrates's dispute about how writing cannot be replaced with speaking is similar to how technology–like cellphones, internet, computer, etc.–cannot be replaced with communication. Socrates's argument connects to Turkle's Ted Talk in that writing was considered a technology back then and Socrates was against this type of technology. I tried to pull the vines apart to make them easier to tie with, as I had seen Tom Hanks do in the movie Cast Away, but I was unable to tear a strip that was much longer than the length of my finger. The vines, also being quite slippery from the juice inside the stems, would simply not allow me to get a very good grip on them. Foregoing the vine idea, I decided to try and pack dirt on top of the sticks to create a forced base. Although the dirt was moist, it still wouldn't pack well and kept cracking and crumbling. After laboring to press grass stems into the dirt, while picking up the pieces of mud that were accumulating at my feet, I finally got the first word imprinted with the grass and was finally ready to put the berry stems in it to make the word stand out against the black of the dirt base. When I plucked the berry from its stem, a deep red juice oozed onto my fingertips. The idea struck me like a lightening bolt! I could use the berry juice as ink and write on one of the pieces of wood I had gathered from the yard. I suddenly felt very foolish for not thinking of this much simpler project earlier. Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001) concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of technology, direct instruction, and committed well–trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham & and Perin (2007a), and Rogers & and Graham, (2008), agreed that technology makes the process of writing easier and often provides very specific types of support. Word processing provides at least four advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional–looking, (c) typing provides an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d) word–processing programs have software programs, such as spell and stylistic checkers designed to reduce specific types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer's spoken words are transcribed to electronic text) and word–prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces the key strokes by predicting the writer's next word). This is helpful for students with difficulties with spelling and the mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software can aide with the planning process, and the use of computer networks and the Internet can help to promote communication and collaboration among writers. The permanence criterion of the assignment narrowed my choices by eliminating writing in the dirt, sand, or mud or with grass or leaves. Wind or rain would erase any writing created using these materials. The issue of portability further narrowed my decision to use a small, hand–held, sharp rock to scrape or chisel words into a larger stone which was able to be carried. The stone needed to have a writing surface large enough to chisel words but not so large that it could not be easily transported. All in all, inventing a technology which was creative was somewhat of a problem when considering permanence and portability and was overlooked as a criterion. Most students attempt to read a book in one sitting, hoping that they will succeed but in the harsh reality, it is too difficult. Even if the phones, computers, or any form of tech is put away, we will find a new type of distraction. With all the technological prowess of the internet has to offer, it seems it hasn't done much to slow the decline in 'general knowledge', but is it a lack of intelligence or is it because of a deviation in priorities within society and what's to be expected? Millennials now don't have to worry about getting "drafted and shipped to Vietnam" (Source 2) like the old generation did, it was a necessity, if not important, to know what political affairs were going on. Even though it's just as important to know about your politicians back then as it is now, it isn't so much 'needing' to know in order to escape war and other pitfalls, but 'wanting' to know in order to stay well informed, which happened as a result of shifting priorities and a society, not due to general lack of intelligence. Still, there are other ways to be informed and be knowledgeable, especially in this new age that is gradually, moving away from "callused hands to a nation of agile brains", says cognitive scientist Marcel just of Carnegie Mellon Univeristy (Source 2). We sometimes fear the advancement of technology because it's new and "uncharted territory". Technology undeniably and unarguably defines our world, and choosing to hide from technology and the role it plays in our world, only hinders the leadership capabilities of those who will soon lead this nation. It can be beneficial to allow us access to a wide variety of information we, otherwise, would not have. However, we should also be careful to not develop an overdependence on technology. If we become entirely reliant on technology, and remain incapable of doing tasks on our own, without understanding the concepts and ideas we are making decisions with, then we are not leaders. We are simply a person using a tool and hoping that we get the right outcome. If we learn how to properly manage the use of technology, then we become a leader and a tactician, someone who knows both what they are doing and how to use the technology at hand. The leader that is capable of that, will push the army forward to fight the type of war our world is pushing towards. Maybe this technological advancement is, as Carr argues, the one that has gone too far that will drain us of who we are and cause us to become "pancake people" (Carr 580). I then proceeded to look for a piece of wood I could record some very deep and profound thoughts on ("This pen sucks. I miss my keyboard."). After a while I located a suitable branch, big enough to write on and small enough to carry around. With my primitive version of the pencil and paper in hand, I set out to work. It was very hard. But when I do get to choose my topic, then I can write about something that I enjoy and feel passionate about. In my experience with writing, I have chosen many topics. But most of them I probably did not enjoy writing about that particular topic. There are very few papers that I have written where I really enjoyed writing. But the paper that I am going to talk about was different for me because I wanted people to understand my point of view on the subject. And so, I felt compelled to write about the topic that I chose for this particular essay that I wrote in 9th grade. It is about technology, and its role and effect on society. The paper I wrote on technology was an essay. Like most essays, it had 5 paragraphs. An introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. My teacher also had me write an outline to the essay, to help me stay organized in my thoughts. In the introduction paragraph I summarize my main points. I chose three points about technology that I would mention in each of the body paragraphs. In my first body paragraph, I talk about how technology has affected education and the way people can learn. In my second body paragraph, I talk about how technology has changed the way we communicate with people. And in the third paragraph, I talk about how technology has changed the way we entertain ourselves. I chose to write about technology partially because at the time that I was writing that essay, a close family member in my household was experiencing health issues when they were around technology. And so I had to live with very little–to–no technology for about a year. And that probably sounds like I was living in a different time era, and sometimes it felt like that. It was really a drastic time for me and my family. Because in this world, technology is used for everything. And so we had to adapt to not being with it when we were home. It was a really different experience. But it happened for a reason. And I learned how to live without constant technology. Technology has changed education for the better.
