yths and legends are part of our culture. They

nightmares. Myths and legends exist to
entertain people and to give a lesson to the young. Myths
and legends have influenced people in ancient times as
well as the affect people nowadays.
M
‘El Pombero’ (from Argentina and Paraguay)
The legend of ‘El Pombero’ is well known in Argentina
and Paraguay, especially by old generations and people from the rural areas. This legend
has survived to frighten little kids and has varied through time.
The Pombero is a creature that lives in the forest and protects its flora and fauna. His shape
has change depending on the different cultures, for some people the Pombero is similar to a
dwarf as well as he is like a genie for some others. Old people have described the Pombero
as a man with short legs and arms; but he was considered a tall man in older stories. He has
been considered a genie because he can disappear in the air at will; it is said that a woman
can become pregnant if the Pombero touches her belly, but this is more likely to happen to
a single woman. It is also known that beautiful young ladies can be kidnapped by the
Pombero at nap-time.
Old people used to blame the Pombero when bad things happened because he is a bit tricky
sometimes but it is possible to gain Pombero’s favour by offering him some tobacco and
alcohol. His protection is a warranty to protect the animals and crops.
As the Pombero is a bit tricky creature do not try to catch him, nor even to see him or to
take a photograph.

times as well as the affect people nowadays.” etc, for the students to focus, specially on those
