What are learning objectives?
• A learning objective is statement of
what student will be able to do when
they have completed instruction.
• Learning objectives has three major
components.
1. A description of what students will be
able to do.
2. The conditions under which the student
will perform the task.
3. The criteria for evaluating student
performance.
Why are learning objectives important?
1. Selection of content
2. Development of an instructional
strategy.
3. Development and selection of
instructional materials.
4. Include only one general learning out
come in each objective.
Key facts about learning objectives.
Blooms taxonomy
Learning objectives according to the cognitive
processes involved in the mind of learners.from
lowest to highest there are,
1. Knowledge
2. Comprehension
3. Application
4. Analysis
5. Synthesis
6. Evaluation
Blooms taxonomy can be useful
resource in developing learning
Objectives. The following are action
verbs that can be used for various
level.
Knowledge…recall , identify, recognize,
distinguish.
Comprehension…translate, extrapolate, convet,
Interpret.
Application..apply , plan, explain, operate
• Analysis…observe , compare ,outside,
recognize.
• Synthesis…write ,plan ,build , organize
,theorize.
• Evaluation…verify ,assess , test, rank,
select.
Learning objectives should have the
following SMART attributes.
1.specific –objectives that are clearly
stated and consistent with the goals of
the curriculum.
2.Measurable- data can be collected to
measure student learning.
3. Appropriate –for the level of the
learner.
4.Realistic-objectives that are do
able.
5.timely-a target should be
groudend with in the time frame.
Extra tips to consider when working
with learning objectives for learning.
• Align learning assessment with your learning
objectives.
• Remember to use specific and measureable
verbs when writing them.
• Make sure that your learning objectives are
appropriate for your learner.
• Ask yourself if your learning objectives are
achievable and realistic.
• Use simple language and keep them
short.
• If several , organize them in
subcategories.
• Focus on student behaviour.
• Use simple specific action verbs.
Students will be able to ..
• The following are example of learning outcomes.
• 1.student will be able to collect and organize clinical
data.
• 2.students will be able to apply principles of evidence
–based medicine to determine clinical diagnosis, and
formulate and implement acceptable treatment
modalities.
• 3.students will be able to use technology effectively in
the delivery of instruction , assessment, and
professional development.

Writing Learning Objectives

  • 2. What are learning objectives? • A learning objective is statement of what student will be able to do when they have completed instruction.
  • 3.
  • 4. • Learning objectives has three major components. 1. A description of what students will be able to do. 2. The conditions under which the student will perform the task. 3. The criteria for evaluating student performance.
  • 5. Why are learning objectives important? 1. Selection of content 2. Development of an instructional strategy. 3. Development and selection of instructional materials. 4. Include only one general learning out come in each objective.
  • 6. Key facts about learning objectives. Blooms taxonomy Learning objectives according to the cognitive processes involved in the mind of learners.from lowest to highest there are, 1. Knowledge 2. Comprehension 3. Application 4. Analysis 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluation

  • 8. Blooms taxonomy can be useful resource in developing learning Objectives. The following are action verbs that can be used for various level. Knowledge…recall , identify, recognize, distinguish. Comprehension…translate, extrapolate, convet, Interpret. Application..apply , plan, explain, operate
  • 9. • Analysis…observe , compare ,outside, recognize. • Synthesis…write ,plan ,build , organize ,theorize. • Evaluation…verify ,assess , test, rank, select.

  • 11. Learning objectives should have the following SMART attributes. 1.specific –objectives that are clearly stated and consistent with the goals of the curriculum. 2.Measurable- data can be collected to measure student learning. 3. Appropriate –for the level of the learner.
  • 12. 4.Realistic-objectives that are do able. 5.timely-a target should be groudend with in the time frame.
  • 13. Extra tips to consider when working with learning objectives for learning. • Align learning assessment with your learning objectives. • Remember to use specific and measureable verbs when writing them. • Make sure that your learning objectives are appropriate for your learner. • Ask yourself if your learning objectives are achievable and realistic.
  • 14. • Use simple language and keep them short. • If several , organize them in subcategories. • Focus on student behaviour. • Use simple specific action verbs.
