form of racing that is unique to the United States. It grew directly out of illegal match racing on
rural roads by high–school students in the postwar 1940s–early 1950s. Teens would rebuild their
cars and "soup them up" to show off their mechanical skills. The most objective way to prove whos

The famous quarter mile distance was chosen merely because it was easy to measure on a straight

The Unacceptance of Homosexuality in Funny Boy
Throughout Funny Boy, as Arjie comes to terms with his sexuality, he realizes that his family won't
ever accept him. One event in his childhood that made him begin to realize this was the fight he got
in with Her Fatness over bride/bride, which ended in him feeling lonely and unaccepted by
everyone. "I knew that I would never enter the girls' world again... And then there would be the
loneliness. I would be caught between the boys' and the girls' worlds, not belonging or wanted in
either" (39). Arjie played bride/bride, a wedding game, with the girls instead of playing cricket with
the boys to begin with, which automatically made him different from the other boys. Arjie and Her

Social contrasts and gender boundaries create oppression and injustice amongst the characters in
Shyam Selvadurai's Funny Boy. This injustice affects the composure and behaviour of the characters
throughout the novel and it appears in every aspect throughout Funny Boy. Oppression emerges
within the Chelvaratnam family, who are displeased by Arjie's "tendencies", and the likelihood that
he will grow up "funny." Oppression also surfaces between the Sinhalese and Tamils with ethnic
riots in Sri Lanka's society. Even when Arjie is not involved, he still manages to appear at the center
of every oppressive and unjust situation.

filmed based on the story of the Abberton brothers and how they were saved by surfing. In this film,

film, in which females are absent except for a stalwart grandmother, displays no actual females. The
two that were displayed were not really significant in the film, for example the two little girls

ÒFamily Structure and Feminine PersonalityÓ she examines the development of gender identity and
personality. Except for the stereotypical examples I have given above which again are e stablished
by the parents, Chodorow states that the development of a child is basically the same for boys and
girls until the age of three. During those first three years the mother is the dominant figure in the
