Training day
1. Camera
We open with a dusty room, four figures sit around a dusty old case, we see the shot is an
over the shoulder shot, from the perspective of a character entirely shrouded in darkness.
The room is old and often unused or uncleaned as we can see from the constant layer of
dust surrounding everything, it gives the impression that the group are introducing on an
older place. They use an extreme close up on the lock, showing it breaking to establish what
the sudden bang is. The camera pans along as they open the chest, revealing the money
inside. The pan up makes the reveal slow and builds suspense in the audience
We see the protagonist is in the light, while the other three are either in complete darkness,
or half dark, half light. This shows their duality as corrupt cops, being partly in light, partly in
darkness.
When Jake Hoyt grapples with Alonzo and grabs the shotgun, we can see how the previously
static and equal camera switches to a high angle when viewing Alonzo, showing his lack of
power in the situation as the only one without a gun, and a low angle when viewing Jake as he
feels he is the one with power.
Editing
Despite the tension in the situation, the
camera is constantly centered and still, the
cuts are constant and quick though,
showing that despite characters being in
control, they are tense, constant fast paced
cutting furthers said tension.
Mise-en-scene
2. The room in the first part of the scene,
where the money is, is largely mute
colours, with a lot of creams and grey, this
gives the impression again or moral
ambiguity. It also eases the audience into
a sense of security, as the colours are
quite calming, as the scene gets more
tense, the closer shots combined with the
framing of the shot in such a way that only
the dark colours of the characters clothes
are shown, making the shots mostly dark browns
and blacks, showing the darkness of the situation.
By the time we reach the standoff scene, the
lighting is almost entirely black, with tinges of
yellow to grab your attention, again the black is to
show the threat of death and the darkness of the situation, but the darker yellow could also
be a sign of caution as per colour theory, showing how the our main character is also afraid
and should be, as something dangerous is happening. .
Sound
During the first part of the scene, there is nearly no music, the scene is so silent it’s almost
eerie, this creates tension, when Jake first refuses the money, there is a low string played in
the background, similar to how some horror movies show that something tense is
happening, the slowly loudening music creates a sense of horror and tension and puts us in
the position of Jake, showing how afraid he is in this situation.
