OPENING TITLE ANALYSIS
Shutter Island – Shot by Shot Analysis
Shot down a dark
corridor, giving of
negative connotation of
dark, dingy spaces that
are damp, the picture of
the setting could suggest
to the audience certain
feelings and smells that
would be in the diegesis.
Low-key lighting
suggests danger
and the lack of
proper
lighting/electricity
connotes a lack of
care.
Brick walls –
suggests
uniformity (all
the same) and
ordinariness.
Old-fashioned
lamp shades
indicate time
period of film
could be a few
decades prior.
Grid at the end of
corridor which looks like
metal bars suggest
being locked away,
telling the audience that
the film could focus on
imprisonment and crime.
This shot shows a spiral
staircase, with the camera
giving the impression that it
is spinning, suggesting
dizziness and disorientation,
but also gives connotations
of hypnotism, suggesting
possible themes of mind
control and manipulation.
Stairs suggest travel between different
levels, which could suggest there are
multiple layers to the story. The fact they
connote travel suggests the presence of
a journey, be it physical or emotional,
within the movie. Stairs also suggest
height, which could connote phobias.
In this scene, rain is
falling, connoting the
conditions are very wet,
which could be very
uncomfortable. Rain
could also relate to the
imagery of tears,
suggesting sorrow and
misery. The presence of
rain also suggests that
the weather conditions
are not great, meaning
the environment could
be cold.
The circular window,
surrounded by darkness,
could represent the a small
amount of hope that is
available to the yet to be
introduced protagonist.
The light spilling onto the ground could be
seen as the contents of the building
spilling out into the environment,
suggesting that the building holds
possible secrets that could be revealed.
This shot shows a hand,
which could be introducing a
possible character, who,
from the appearance of the
hand, presents to be a
caucasian male.
The hand is clean, again giving hints as to the possible character,
suggesting that he has access to clean facilities due to the clean
appearance of his hands and fingernails, despite the locations
shown in the last few shots. This creates a division between the
character and locations, creating an enigma. The audience could
possibly be thinking who does the hand belong to? Where is the
character located? How is he related to the previous locations.
The colour of the title has changed since the
last shot, further supporting the change of
tone from the dark dingy shots of locations,
the a lighter shot of a clean hand. White
suggests cleanliness, supported by the
cleanliness of the hand, nails and pages, but
also connotes purity. The change from red
titles to white titles could represent the
change from impure to pure or dirt to clean.
The hand is shows removing a page from a
book/file. The file connotes knowledge and the
removal of a page could represent the intake of
information. It could also suggest destruction, but
that is unlikely due the the gentleness and care that
it taken when it is being removed.
This shot pans forward and approaches and
enters through the gate into a holding area
before entering the ground. This shows that
the location is secure, so must contain
something either dangerous or top secret.
The wall/gates are presented to
be very grand, suggesting high
class and the presence of large
amount of money. This could
suggest that a lot is invested in
the location and whatever is
contained within it.
Uniformed law enforcement officers are
presented in the mise en scene standing
by and opening the gates for the ‘camera’,
which could suggest that the shot is
following the eye-level of a possible
character that has authorised access to
the location. The officers support the idea
that the location is high-security and
connotes themes of crime and law
enforcement, as well as protection.
The tone has once again
reverted to the earlier tone
presented in the first few
shots, using low-key lighting
and darker imagery.
The fire connotes warmth, which
contrasts with the earlier connotation of
cold and wet associated with the rain.
The fire could also connote burning,
which suggests destruction, high
temperatures and pain. The fire is
within a fireplace/ behind bars which
shows that the fire is controlled,
connoting possible controlled
destruction or controlled pain.
The majority of the frame is taken
up by a chair which is turning,
suggesting there is an unknown
character in the scene. This creates
more enigmas, with the audience
being interested in who is in the
seat, why don’t we they get to see
their face.
The gun connotes death, murder and violence
but could also connote a threat. The gun,
however, is on the floor, suggesting it has been
dropped or placed there, meaning that that
access to the gun could be limited/difficult. This
could suggest a loss of dominance over a
situation or a loss of control or power.
A foot is shown moving a gun, which
suggests that the character is trying
the make the gun more accessible.
This connotes an attempt at
regaining power and trying the
access a defensive weapon. This
suggests that the character is in
some form of danger.
This shot goes back to the
imagery of rain/snow falling. The
falling of snow would often have
positive connotations with things
such as winter, quiet, peace and
even possibly christmas in some
films. This shot is almost
juxtaposed against the other
shots such as the gun.
The snow suggests the time of year,
being winter, and the weather
conditions, suggested to be very cold
and snowy/icy.
Shot from inside a cell,
suggesting that the setting is
within a prison. As the shot is
from within a cell, with the
barred door closed, suggests
that we could be seeing the
narrative from a prisoners
perspective.
The room is dark, with blacks and grey making it appear very
monochrome. This suggests that being inside the cell is very dull
and boring, as no colour is shown.
The white light from behind the bars of the door suggests that
something brighter and less dull is happening outside the cell, or
could represent the hope for being in the outside world.
The match, which has a
flame, suggests that it could
be used to be seeing
through the dark, which
connotes that the character
is trying to help their
situation or could symbolise
that he is looking for the
truth. The match could also
be used to light a fire,
symbolising manmade
destruction.
This shot is an extreme long shot
showing the island, that is referred to
in the title of the movie ‘shutter
island’. This shot shows that
verything shown in previous shot has
taken place on the island.
