The client is the London borough of Redbridge, whose current administration prioritizes increasing recycling. Redbridge has initiatives like rewarding flats that recycle the most with money. The brief for a student video project is informal but focuses on a social issue like recycling. The purpose of social action projects is to raise awareness of issues and bring communities together to create solutions. Students will gain experience in skills like filming, directing, writing and research by creating a documentary video about recycling in Redbridge.
1. Client information
Our client for this project is the London borough
of Redbridge, a local government Brach, The
current branch is labour, who won the 2017
election. The client’s administrative centre and
headquarters is in Ilford operating out of
Redbridge town hall. The administrations has
displayed interest in increasing recycling in the
borough, including a site that encourages people to recycle in return for money, the borough also
prioritises recycling in flats, this has led to them creating their Flats recycling league plan which gives
money to the flat which recycles the most in Redbridge and the Flat with the highest improvement.
This competition means most flats will at least try to improve their recycling in order to win the
commotion.
The structure of the brief
This brief is done somewhat informally, due to it being aimed towards younger audiences. But has an
official air, it is split into three paragraphs, what, why, and when. It is done in an informal
arrangement, showing that the entire thing is optional, and that the students have no obligation to
take part, it’s also a very loose brief, encouraging students to come up with their own projects, not
even giving examples in order to allow for completely free thought on the issue, both on the subject
of the project (in our case, recycling), or in what format you do it (documentary, short film). The brief
makes it clear this is a competition, encourages good entry’s as people will generally want to win, and
encouraging a sense of composition is a good way to have people create top quality content, it gives
clear an concise instructions in what It wants. This is an informal contract, you are not bound by any
financial or legal contrition’s but it does outline the sort of project it wants you to do, specifically a
project focusing on social issues, it needs to be over ten minutes in length.
Purposes of project
Social action projects are projects created in order to benefit the general populace, they are usually
community or government run, and mostly
by non-profit organizations, and focus on a
single issue within said community. They are
good because the community run nature
means they understand what their
community needs better than most. The
point is to raise awareness for the issue,
making a big deal out of it to convince the
community to help, and thus possibly help
fix the issue, another point is to strengthen
community ties by helping bring the
community together in fixing said issue.
An example of a large social action project is the BBC show panorama which uses its larger audience
to target world issues. The BBC is not the only station to have a show like this, ITV also has exposure.
2. The issue of recycling is something me and my group is very passionate in, and it’s a field in which
every single person can effect with very little effort, all the recycling movement needs is awareness,
and that’s the exact type of thing a video can effect, public perception. It also helps that Redbridge is
very recycle heavy, installing recycling areas all over the borough.
Recycling is important because climate change is on the cusp of being an unfixable problem, and we,
as a community, need to change our bad habits to fix the problem before it gets out of hand.
Opportunities offered
From this project, the members of my group will gain more experience in directing and producing
documentary style videos, including skills in filming, acting, directing, and writing. We will need to a
lot of research in order to capitalise on the opportunity and create something great within the context
of a video about recycling. It also helps towards our employability, as it can go in media passed
portfolios, as well as the skills learnt, being good on a CV, helping us get jobs in the media industry
due to employers being more likely to hire experienced candidates, as well as helping us get general
skills, such as teamwork, delegation of tasks and general people skills, that are useful in most jobs.
Time organizational skills will be learnt, through organizing places and times to meet in order to film,
as well as getting together writers to create a cohesive project, these skills will be of use all
throughout my life.
One of the skills I will learn is writing for documentaries and non-fiction, this is a harder process in
many ways compared to fiction, as you need to do a lot of research to make sure everything is
legitimate and factual, this skills learnt in this is are much more useful in later life, research and fact
checking are useful in pretty much any job you can think off.
Another skill I will learn is in the acting department, even though we are not “acting” persay, and just
reading out lines and a script in nonfiction, reading these lies naturally and organically while still
quickly is a good skill for anyone interested in documentary’s or journalism medias, and also is good
for actors who wish to learn to be more natural.
Direction is also something I can learn through this project, if we indeed create a documentary style
video, we can learn some simple direction, mostly in making decent establishing shots for new
locations.
My skills working in groups will help with communication
