The BBC is publicly owned but run by the government. It is overseen by OFCOM and the BBC Trust according to a royal charter. The BBC's primary sources of funding are the annual TV license fee paid by UK households and companies, as well as selling formats of shows internationally. The BBC increases its brand visibility and audience through synergy, having properties like Dr. Who appear across different media like books, movies, and video games. Examples of BBC products for different audiences include the soap opera Eastenders and the children's show Copycats. Regulatory bodies like the BBC Trust set the BBC's direction, assess new shows and services, and handle complaints.
2. Ownership
The BBC is technically owned by the british public, but is run by the government, who created the BBC
trust to look over the BBC. In april OFCOM (office of communication), was instead put in charge of the
BBC, taking over the Trust. With the changes, it's not 100% who is in charge of the BBC, but the
current director general of the BBC is called Tony Hall
both OFCOM and the BBC trust run the BBC according to a royal charter. the royal charter has three
missions
1- To Inform
2- To Entertain
3- To Educate
3. Funding
The BBC is primarily funded by a annual TV licence fee, which is charged to all British households,
companies, and organisations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television
broadcasts.
Another way the BBC is funded is the selling of Formats, BBC sells formats for shows, allowing them to
be shown in other country, for instance, “the great british bake off” may become “the great american
bake off”, and the american channel will pay for the rights to use that format.
4. Synergy
The BBC has many products that show themselves over many mediums, the allowing of
other companies to use your products is known as synergy
I think the most obvious of these Is Dr.Who, there are Dr.Who books, magazines, movies,
video games and more. This is synergy as it has the product over many forms of media,
This not only increases the visibility of the brand, meaning more will know about it, but it
increases the target audience, as more groups will be interested in the brand.
Many americans first exposure to Dr who was the 1996 film, and thus from that, became
fans and bought and consumed more of the product, such as the TV show. This shows a
different form of media can increase the target audience.
5. Examples of services and
products of the BBC
Products Services
Eastenders- older groups, 25-50 BBC one
Copycats- for younger kids, age 5-12 CBBC

early showing.
BBC News
A product is a consumable piece of media, a service is a platform in which you consume
that media. For example, TV-shows are products, while the channel itself is a service.
6. regulatory bodies
The BBC trust is a regulating body made of 12 trust members and lead by the chairman, currently Rona
Fairhead. The BBC trust sets the direction and makes decisions for the publicly funded BBC, being the ones
who formally assess proposals for new shows and services as part of the BBC. They are also in charge of the
organization of funding, deciding where their allocated amount of money goes each year, making sure that
the BBC is efficient to save as much money as possible too.
They are also the final point of appeal within the BBC for complaints, including editorial, fair trading and TV
licensing. If a complaint is upheld, we can impose sanctions on the BBC.
