4. CHINA LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC
CARGO SHIP
• China on 14 November 2017 launched world's first fully electric cargo ship in
Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. This 2000-metric-ton ship is the
first in the world to use lithium battery. The ship was manufactured by the
Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Ltd. The ship is presently running in
the inland section of the Pearl River.
5. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WORLD'S FIRST FULLY
ELECTRIC CARGO SHIP
• The ship can run 80 kilometers after being charged for two hours.
• The ship is 70.5 meters long and has battery energy of about 2400 kilowatt hours
which is the same energy of 40 new energy cars.
• Its highest speed is 12.8 kilometers per hour, and there is zero emission of waste
gas pollutants.
• The ship will be mainly used to run in the inland section of the Pearl River for
carrying coal for the generation of electric power.
• This all-electric cargo vessel will help in reducing the shipping costs for electric
power operators.
6. NO MORE AID TO PAKISTAN: TRUMP
• The US President issued a tough warning to Pakistan and said that United States
will no longer give any fund to Pakistan. The statement comes soon after the
recent talks that the Trump administration was considering cutting off aid to
Pakistan.
7. • "The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid
over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking
of our leaders as fools” trump said in a strong post on twitter.
8. US AID TO PAKISTAN
• The United States of America started giving economic support and military aid to
Pakistan soon after the country’s creation in 1947.
• In total, the United States obliged nearly $67 billion to Pakistan from 1951 and
2011.
• There were many times when US halted aid entirely and shut the doors of the
USAID offices. This pattern has rendered the United States a far cry from a
reliable and unwavering partner to Pakistan over the years.
• Pakistan remains one of America’s largest recipients of foreign assistance, a sign
of US's long-term partnership and commitment.
9. CHINA TO FIGHT POLLUTION WITH WORLD'S
LARGEST AIR PURIFIER
China has constructed an experimental air purifying tower called the Xian smog
tower, which is touted to be the ‘world’s biggest air purifier’ with a height of over
100 meters, to combat smog and air pollution.
10. • The tower is undergoing tests by researchers of the Institute of Earth
Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is reported to be having a
positive effect on the air quality in the area.
• According to the research head Cao Junji, the quality of air was recorded to be
better after observations were made over a distance of 10 sq. km in the past few
months. He also shared that the tower has resulted in more than 10 million cubic
meters of clean air since the day it was launched
11. WORKING OF THE SMOG TOWER
• Launched in 2015, the tower was announced to find a low-cost method to
artificially remove pollutants from the atmosphere.
• • The polluted air is sucked into the glasshouses of the tower and is then heated
up by the solar energy.
• • The hot air then moves through multiple cleaning filters and helps in reducing
the pollution.
• • A full-sized tower would reach 500 meters (1,640 feet) high with a diameter of
200 meters (656 feet), according to a patent application the makers filed in 2014.
• • The size of the greenhouses could cover nearly 30 sq. km and will be capable
of purifying the air for a small-sized city.
12. INDIA AND PAKISTAN EXCHANGE 27TH LIST OF
NUCLEAR INSTALLATION
• India and Pakistan on 1 January 2018 exchanged the lists of their nuclear
installations under an agreement that aims to prevent both sides from attacking
such facilities. This is the twenty-seventh consecutive exchange of such a list
between the two countries. The exchange was done through diplomatic channels
simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad.
13. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AGREEMENT ON THE
PROHIBITION OF ATTACK AGAINST NUCLEAR
INSTALLATIONS
• The Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations between
India and Pakistan that governs the exchange of these lists was signed on 31
December 1988 and came into force on 27 January 1991.
• It ensures that both countries inform each other of nuclear installations and
facilities that are to be covered under the agreement on the first of January every
year.
• As per the agreement, both the countries shall refrain from undertaking,
encouraging or participating in, directly or indirectly, any action aimed at causing
the damage to any nuclear installation or facility in the other country.
14. WORLD’S LARGEST AIRCRAFT SUCCESSFULLY PASSES
FIRST ENGINE TESTS
• The world’s largest airplane, which has been designed to serve as a launching
platform for sending rockets into low-Earth orbit, has successfully completed its
initial engine tests.
15. • The plane weighs about 227,000 kg and has the biggest wingspan ever built,
measuring 118 m from one end to the other.
• According to the spaceflight company Stratolaunch, which is led by Microsoft co-
founder Paul Allen, in the initial tests, each of the six engines of the plane
operated as expected.
16. MAIN FEATURES OF THE PLANE
• Named Stratolaunch, the plane weighs nearly 227,000 kg when empty and
unfueled.
• It is designed to carry nearly 250,000 kg between the two fuselages.
• Measuring 118 m from one end to the other, the aircraft's wingspan is longer
than a professional football field.
• To support its size and weight, the vehicle has 28 wheels.
• It can hold more than 113,000 kg of fuel.
• It is powered by six engines made for Boeing 747 aircraft
17. EMERGING ECONOMIES: WEF RANKS PAKISTAN BETTER
THAN INDIA
• The WEF ranked India at 62nd position in the list of emerging economies, while
China and Pakistan were ranked at 26th and 47th position respectively.
18. • According to the Inclusive Development Index shared by the WEF, Norway
continues to be the world’s Number 1 inclusively advanced economy, with
Lithuania as the Number 1 of all emerging economies in the world. The Forum
announced these rankings during a meet to release the annual index
• The Forum’s Inclusive Development Index 2018 measures progress of 103
