water dispute after independence turn out to be a big problem between 2 countries India & Pakistan. This leads to Indus Water Treaty(Bill passed by world bank)
2. INDUS WATER TREATY
• After Independence, problems between the two countries
arose over the distribution of water.
• The division of Punjab thus created major problems for
irrigation in Pakistan
• On 1948, India stopped the supply of water to Pakistan from
every canal flowing from India to Pakistan.
• Pakistan approached the World Bank in 1952 to help settle
the problem permanently.
• An agreement was signed between India and Pakistan in
September 1960. This agreement is known as the Indus Water
Treaty.
3. Indus Water Treaty
• Rivers given to India (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej)
• Rivers given to Pakistan (the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab)
• India is not allowed to build any storage on the rivers
allocated to Pakistan
• The treaty also guaranteed ten years of uninterrupted water
supply. During this period Pakistan was to built huge dams
• The treaty allocates 80% of water
4. Why Treaty in news?
• Because of the confrontations between India and Pakistan
over other issues, the water treaty naturally comes into
picture.
• After the Uri cross-border attack by Pakistan in 2016, Indian
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said “Blood and Water
cannot flow simultaneously.
5. Effects of Violation
• Reducing the water flow to Pakistan will unleash havoc there
(especially in Punjab and Sindh province).
• India at present does not have enough infrastructure to use
the additional water available.
• The decision of not giving water to Pakistan may further
enrage the terror elements in the country
• Not respecting the Indus Water Treaty, may invite global
condemnation to India as the treaty is an international
agreement.
