3. Outdoor Photography Magazine (Existing products)
This magazine from issuu.com is based around photography surrounding nature and the outdoors.
There are photogenic pictures on every page and different articles inside from photography tips,
interviews with photographers, advertisement of outdoor places open to the public, etc. Each of these
articles usually take up a DPS, some with more writing than others.
On pages where there seem
to have been an interview,
or there are
tips/information about
photography, there is a lot
of writing on the page, with
possibly only a couple of
images:
On this DPS you can see that there are 4 longshot images of
the environment shown. The images all have neutral outdoor
color (e.g, green, brown, orange, blue) which are all typically
quite calming colors in nature. The images are also taken at
different times during the day, for example one looked like it is
taken in the late evening, and one image looks like it is taken
during the day, typically on a cloudy, chilly day. These types of
images tend to make the reader feel like they want to be there
in the outside world. The font surrounding the images is small
and simple, giving off the idea that, as the images are
supposed to give off a relaxing vibe, the font should stay
simple and not big and explicit so that it doesn’t ruin how the
reader is viewing the article page.
From looking through this magazine, I have
gathered that that the articles are likely to be
appealing to older people, specifically people
aged 40-60 years of age who may want to visit
more remote and quiet places and those who may
want to go for walks and admire the views and
wildlife. This can indeed appeal to anyone of any
age who is interested in nature, but mainly,
stereotypically, older people.
5. Healthy Cooking Magazine (Existing Product)
This magazine from issuu.com is based around keeping a healthy diet, with different articles
explaining about different vegan meals, gluten free meals, dairy free meals, etc that can be made
at home. Most of the pages in the magazine are made up of images of meals with a small section
of information on, which is infographic-like.
Audience appeal:
The article on the right shows an advertisement, specifically
aimed at women who are looking for a special nutritional diet
that will help digestion and absorption. The article shows a
woman, looking happy, holding her baby. Therefor you can tell
when viewing this article that the magazine itself is
stereotypically aimed at young/adult women who are looking
for a healthier lifestyle.
When the audience is looking through the article they may feel
like they want to buy the magazine because there are clear
images and text on each article page.
The first thing you notice when looking at this article page are the main
colors shown, green and orange. The colors represent the vegetables
that the magazine is trying to promote and get the message across;
being healthy and vegan.
There isn’t a lot of writing on this DPS, the main title is written in quite
fancy writing, which makes the magazine seem more professionally
written.
At the bottom of the page there is advertising for tablets that have
healthy nutriants in, and they also say in the advertisement that when
buying the tablets, you are also donating to a good cause which may
make people feel like they are also doing something good if they buy it.
7. Women’s Fashion Magazine (Existing Product)
This magazine, from issuu.com, is based around women’s fashion. The different articles inside show
plenty of images of fashion style, small sections of writing talking about things from the history of
fashion, different designers and brands, catwalks, companies, etc.
In this DPS article, the main focus is viewing the pictures. You can tell
that the location of these pictures were taken during a catwalk so
therefor the women in the pictures would be aware and expecting
pictures to be taken. On this page, more pictures take up the page
than writing so it is a simple way for women get a small idea for
inspiration in fashion as the writing shown is small tips for fashion
trends. The writing is in a simple bold font so it is clear for the reader
to read, especially as it is black writing with a white background.
These two DPS pages are advertising different clothes from different clothing stores, for example
online stores like ASOS, Givenchy, etc. The article is advertising and promoting different stores so the
audience can get an idea of what clothes the stores sell and what clothes from other stores will go
together.
One page of the DPS is promoting clothes which are ethnic, detailed, and promoted to women who
are interested in traditional clothing. Women may choose to wear clothes like this on a day/night
out, or just genuinely somewhere where they can dress up nice. It is useful that this page has
different clothes but all have the same trend which gives the audience a wider range of clothes to
look into.
On the second double page spread the clothes are more plain and simple colors, advertising clothes
to women who like the plain colors but have a different, more unique and old fashioned look. On the
article, the clothes are said to be a ‘victorian style’ so these types of clothes are likely to be aimed at
young women, possibly aged 20-35 years of age.
The fonts on both of these pages are again black, bold writing with a white background to make the
text clear to read so the audience can focus more on the clothes and what appeals to them.
9. Outdoor Adventure/Sport Magazine (Existing Product)
This article, from issuu.com, is based around outdoor sports activities. Inside the article there is a lot of
advertisements about, outdoor gear, outdoor activities and events that are open to the public, etc. There
is also a lot of text, talking about people’s experiences on outdoor adventures, and there are also
interviews with people involved in sport activities.
This is a double page spread article that talks about someone who visited
somewhere called ‘Pacific Yurts’ and made a family home there from scratch.
There is more text on this DPS than images as the main focus of this article is
the story that they are trying to tell this too.
People who are likely to be reading this article will be aged likely 35-60 years of
age as people tend to be more interested in reading articles instead of looking
at pictures when they get older.
On the right side of this DPS there are advertisements shown. Therefor when
people look at this page they will likely see the story first and then they will see
the adverts last as they scan through the page which the audience are likely to
read or quickly look at, especially if they have just read a long story.
The front cover:
Having a large close up photo on the front of the magazine will stand out and
make it easier for people to quickly notice what the magazine is about, which in
this case you can just tell that the magazine is about outdoor sport as there is a
women in sports clothes with outdoor sports equipment in her hand.
The font of the title is large and is the same color as the bike the women is
holding in the picture. This show’s that the magazine was made to have a sort of
theme. The color is also bright and at the top of the magazine so it is to be one
of the first things the audience will view and it is clearly stood out.
There is small details at the bottom of the cover to show what is included in the
magazine which is useful for the audience as they will have an idea of what is in
there before they purchase or start reading through it.
10. Research Analysis
I discovered all the existing magazines on a website called ‘issuu.org’ where I was able to find
plenty of different type of magazines from cooking to music to sport, etc.
In one of the magazines I have researched, I have noticed that the pictures shown on a DPS
or an article all have a specific theme, e.g. a similar tone of colours. In the outdoor magazine
the DPS shows pictures that have cold, crisp colours like white, blue, grey, with an orange
tone that shows the sunset in both pictures. These colours are possibly put together to set
the mood as the colours are quite calming, and the aim will be to get the reader to feel like
they want to be there and travel. I chose this DPS from the outdoor magazine as it included
images and text which I was able to analyse and write about.
Firstly, I chose to research a magazine about outdoor places as this will be similar to what I
want my magazine to be about. I really liked viewing this magazine, ‘outdoor photography’ as
the magazine contained lots of images but also lots of writing which I am including in my
magazine. I have gathered quite a lot of inspiration from this magazine like how I could add a
them in or what type of images I could use to best suit my final product.
Secondly, I chose to research a magazine based around food and cooking. One of the reasons
I chose this magazine is that the front cover has quite a lot of information on it unlike the
previous magazine I had looked at. It was interesting to see all the different colours and
information on the front cover. This magazine gave me inspiration on how I could layout my
front cover as it can be difficult to add lots of detail on a front cover without it looking messy.
But this magazine gave me some ideas on what I could add on my final product, like
advertisement and small pieces o information on what the inside of the magazine contains.
