Assure method solving systems by substitution
1. Assure Method Solving Systems by Substitution
I. Analyze learners: My class consists of 25 9th
graders - 11 girls and14 boys. Of the students,
12 are white, 8 are African American, and 5 are Latin American. Additionally, 3 students
have been diagnosed with ADHD. The majority of my students have visual and auditory
learning styles. This will require instruction that incorporates plenty of verbal instruction,
auditory resources, opportunities for students to visualize, and visual aids.
II. State objectives: Students will solve systems of equations by substitution by completing a
QR scavenger hunt with 85 percent accuracy by the end of the unit.
III. Select methods, media, and materials: To incorporate different learning styles I will use the
following methods, media, and materials:
Youtube: Students will watch a video that teaches the method of solving by substitution.
Twitter: I will use Twitter as a means of communication to provide students with clues
to find the QR codes in the scavenger hunt.
QR codes: A scavenger hunt of QR codes with systems of equation problems will be set
up in the school for the students to complete. Students will also have access to QR
codes that provide resources where they can find extra practice problems or video
instruction.
IV. Utilize media and materials: I will preview the Youtube video “Solving Systems of Equations
by Substitution” to be used in class. All technology will be tested before class to make sure
it works properly (this includes the Smartboard and computers). I will get permission from
the administration to post the QR codes in various areas of the school building. I will ensure
that all QR codes are working and posted.
V. Require learner participation: As an introduction, I will review with my students what we
know about solving systems of equations. The class will watch the video “Solving Systems of
2. Equations by Substitution.” I will then take questions from students and do examples with
those who need further guidance. Students will practice a few problems, and then I will
assign them to go on a QR code scavenger hunt. The students will be permitted to use there
smartphones and work in pairs to complete the scavenger hunt.
VI. Evaluate and revise: To evaluate my students I will have them participate in class discussion
by either providing comments or asking questions. I will also check for achievement by
walking around the room while the students are practicing solving equations to see if they
understand or need further clarification. Students will complete the QR code scavenger
hunt, and each student will present to me the work they have completed. Each pair of
students will be asked to demonstrate how to solve a system of equations by substitution
and explain it to their peers.
