My Idea summarizes that the student chose to focus their project on 1960s music, dressing their brother in 1960s-inspired clothing and photographing him outdoors to capture the era.
The Photoshoot details that the student took photos of their brother against trees in a field to resemble album artwork, facing some challenges with modern elements in shots but addressing it during editing.
Editing explains that the student gave photos a sepia tone and added font styling to match the 1960s theme, deciding not to use close-up studio shots and keeping a consistent style across the album design.
2. My Idea
After having researched the music industry and the history of it, I decided to
look more into 60s music. After having then done the genre research, I
chose my brother to be my artist because he listens to that genre of music
and also owns some similar clothing to what people wore in the 60s.
The 60s was mostly the decade of the hippies, however I wanted to sway away
from that stereotype and look more into the other side that isn't the
stereotype of the 60s, but still incorporate some of the ‘hippy’ aspect.
My plan was to dress my artist in the non-stereotype 60s clothing; for example
denim and sheep wool collar, and take the pictures of him in a forest or field
to get the natural outside ‘hippy’ feel.
For the editing I wanted to give it an old look, but at this point in time I didn't
know exactly what or how I wanted to edit because I hadn't taken the
pictures and didn't know what would look right.
3. Planning
For planning I did a rough sketch of what I wanted each page of the digipac to
look like and label it so I knew what I was doing whilst on the photo shoot.
For one of the pages on my digipac, I wanted to do a close up of the artists
face, so I would have to use the studio to take the picture, however when i
looked back at the pictures at a later time I didn't think they were very
successful so I decided no tot use them in the final product.
I also looked at font styles and picked a few that might have tied in well with
my digipac and then would later choose the best one that suits it the most.
If I were to have done anything differently I would maybe have drawn up
multiple plans for the digipac pages because then I could have chosen the
best one out of them which could have made my final product better and
with more detail.
4. The Photoshoot
With the photoshoot, I did stick to my original plan. I first went to the studio
to take the close ups of my artists face. I then went to a field with a couple of
trees so my artist could stand against one for the front cover of the digipac.
I also got him to walk around the field and look out to the houses below so the
pictures would look more natural and not as ‘robotic’.
When doing the photoshoot, I came across a small problem because when
taking the pictures there were cars in the shot which didn't fit in with the
60s theme, as they were too modern. However, later on when editing i
cropped them out so wasn't a problem anymore.
5. Editing
When editing I did stick to my original plan to an extent. I gave each picture
that I used an old effect by adding a sepia tone to it and red and yellow
tones. I chose the most suitable font for the digipac and faded it down a bit
so it wasn't as harsh-looking but I also added a drop shadow behind it to
add more depth to the writing.
I decided not to use the pictures from the studio shoot because I felt they
didn't fit in with the rest of the pictures and didn't come out as successful as
the others. I used similar pictures for the front cover and the advert so they
resemble each other and the audience would know what the album roughly
looks like when they see the advert.
At the end of editing, I added in the smaller bits of writing like the legal
information and studio name. I also made the style of writing fit in here to
the rest of the digipac.
Overall, I think the editing was successful but I could have been a bit more
experimental that could have ended up with a better final product.
6. What I have learnt
From this unit I have learnt more about music, different genres and the
history of music in general. Music has come a long way and has changed so
much over many years with what was classed as popular.
However, I feel I have learnt that some of the old music is coming back into
fashion and even younger teenagers and adults still like some of it now.
My photoshop skills have improved a little bit, with learning about different
filters and tones you can add to backgrounds, pictures and writing.
Overall, I am happy with my final product, even though I could have maybe
experimented a bit more with photoshop and the location of where I shot.
