Question 1
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and cons of
real media products?
A magazine is a media product that is printed, it can be bought and sold anywhere. They are usually realised on a certain
day each month if they are monthly magazines, if not they are published weekly. Although they are printed they have the
same intention of any other media product which is to promote and sell. The purpose of a magazine is that its meant to
attract the readers attention and intrigue them to carry on reading. They are there to sell, so to do this they must stand out
on a shelf and must be attractive to the buyer.
2. The codes and conventions used in a magazine are crucial to making it what it is. A magazine without a masthead wouldn’t be thought of as a magazine. The masthead of a magazine can help the audience identify
what the magazine is going to be based on. This is also true of the front cover image and the cover lines. Together they all come together to help the audience decipher what genre ( say it’s a music magazine) the
magazine would be about. The technical codes are pivotal to the audience as they make up the front of magazine which the audience will scan over in a rack full of other magazines to pick out the one they want. The
same goes for the symbolic codes on the colours you use to the costumes and the facial expressions of the model on the front cover. They all have to stand out and link together to create a certain genre so that the
stereotypical audience will want to read.
I have used all these technical codes to make up my front cover, But my cover lines challenge the conventions of a magazine as they are on the right and not on the
left. On my front cover both the masthead and image are connected. As the model on the front cover looks shocked, this then introduces symbolic codes as I made
my model pose in the certain way to compose a certain image of looking shocked. This then puts emphasis on the masthead. Like all other magazines Electro-
shocker contains as the components that makes it a magazine. When finalising on a idea for the image on the front cover it became clear that using direct gaze on
the model really helps to boost sales as the reader can feel as though they are really connected and involved in the magazine. Using direct gaze also really helped
boost the emphasis on the masthead as you can see in her eyes that she looks shocked. When I had chosen the final image I decided that the lips needed to be a
brighter more vibrant colour so on Photoshop I changed the colour, this was so that it would find in with the genre of music better. When creating the masthead I
added a stroke to the lettering so that it would stand out more and be more bolder to the audience. When choosing the background I decided to keep it simple and

A way in which my contents page uses elements of a real media product is the layout, as you would expect on a contents page the components of the magazine are
shown in even columns, Also like all magazines each story is titled with folios , so that the reader can easily navigate and pick out what they want to read. I realized it
was crucial to include folios while doing research on other magazines. I tried to challenge the conventions by having quite a lot of white space, As it's apparent that
contents pages usually burst with colour, but I wanted to stick to strict colour scheme which meant keeping the colours pretty minimal and basic. Similar to all the
research I stuck all the magazines contents into three dividers; regulars, specials and reviews. It was important that they were spit into sections and that they were in
chronological order. My magazine is different from 'Q' as the images on mine are very straight and in squares, unlike the magazine 'Q' that have there's spread
throughout the spread. A similarity throughout all three magazines is that they all stick to the colour scheme.
4. Double page spread

Drop Caps
My double page spread also follows the conventions of a magazine as it contains a headline, a pull quote, columns, images, a
cross head and drop caps. I stuck to the colour scheme throughout all of the pages, and try to carry across the pinky pop kind of
vibe. My double page spread is very different to both of the magazines that I looked at doing research, it's different from 'Q' as
its more colorful and in columns, it's different from the magazine 'louder than war' as the main image on the dps is the
background colour for the spread.
