2. Water Resources & Their Importance
Water is essential for all living beings.
Perennial & Seasonal rivers, streams, lakes,
ponds etc. Together form water resources of our
country. Water is essential to sustain life on earth
🌍. Water resources are sources of water that are
useful or
potentially useful. Uses of water include
agricultural,
industrial, household, recreational and
environmental
Activities. It is also used to generate power
known as hydroelectricity power.

3. Rivers:
India is very fortunate to have large numbers of
perennial and seasonal river flowing through it.
River Indus and its tributaries Jhelum, Satluj ,
Beas, Ravi& Chenab, the Ganga and its major
tributaries Yamuna, Gomti, Ghaghara , Gandak ,
Kosi, & the Brahmaputra originate in the
Himalayas and are fed by the melting ice. These
are perennial or ever flowing river. The
peninsular rivers like Chamba, Betwa, Son ,
Mahanadi , Godavari , Narmada , Tapti , Krishna
, and Kaveri , and their tributaries are fed by the
monsoon rains and hence are seasonal rivers
4. Multi-Purpose Projects:
Dams are constructed across rivers. They serve many purposes. They
save water of the rivers for irrigation. They control floods in the rivers.
They also produce hydroelectricity. Such dams, serving
many purposes, are called multi-purpose projects.

5. Canals:
River flow only in some areas. So, channels called
canals are built to divert river water to
agricultural lands for farming where there are no
rivers. For example , the Indira Gandhi Canal
provides water from the Bhakra Dam to many
areas in north-west India.
6. Lakes & Tanks
These are large depressions in which rainwater or
riverwater gets collected. This water is used for
irrigation , drinking & fishing. Some water in the
tanks also seeps through the soil & gets stored as
underground water. It can be used in the dry season
when there is scarcity of water
7. Wells & Tube Wells
Wells are dug in the ground.
Underground water can be drawn out
through wells & used for various
purposes. Tube wells use electricity
to draw underground water mainly
for use by farmers for irrigation.
