2. Long time ago, people uses their own body to measure things.
Since body parts ike hands or feets have different sizes, they come up with
ways to measure things which is understandable, efficient, and reliable to
use.
Distance – measured in terms of length, or the measure of how long
something is. And to measure distance, you have to use appropriate tools.
3. Ancient Tools for Measuring Distance
• Person’s body used as reference point for measurement.
• Measurements: length of actual foot, width of a finger, and the distance of a
step
• Ancient Egyptians – used distance from a person’s elbows to his/her
fingertips as a cubit measure.
• Greeks – used distance from the tip of their thumb to the tip of their index
finger, which have been stretched apart, to measure things, and they called
this measure a lick.
• Some cultures – expressed length in span, which is the length of a hand
stretched out. A yard was originally the length of the belt of an average adult
male.
4. The International System of Units
• A universal system of units, and the SI unit fro distance is the meter (m). One meter
is roughly the distance from the shoulder to the fingertips of an average-sized adult.
• Another units are centimeter (cm), and millimeter (mm) – less than one meter.
Kilometer (km) – exceeding one meter.
• The following shows how the units are related to each other:
1 meter = 1000 millimeters = 0.001km
1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 centimeter = 10 millimeters = 0.01 m
1 kilometer = 1000 meters = 100, 000 cm
5. Conversion from one unit to another:
Ex:
1. 3 m = ______ cm
3 x 100 = 300
3 m = 300 cm
2. 2.5 cm = ______ m
2.5 x 0.01 = 0.025
2.5 cm = 0.025 m
Ex:
3. 4 km = ______ m
4 x 1000 = 4000 m
4 km = 4000 m
4. 5.5 cm = ______ mm
5.5 x 10 mm = 55
5.5 cm = 55 mm
7. 1. Ruler
• A long and straight, and takes
measurements in inches, feet,
millimeters, and centimeters.
• It may be made of wood, plastic,
or metal.
• Meterstick – special ruler that is
exactly 1-meter long.
• Yardstick – ruler that measures
nearly 1-meter long
8. 2. Tape Measure
• Also referred as measuring tape
• A flexible ruler
• Printed on a plastic ribbon that
can be used to find the length
around objects or the distance
along a wavy line.
• It is frequently used in the textile
industry for taking clothing
measurements.
9. 3. Micrometer
• Used to measure small objects
because it can measure lengths
within a quarter of a millimeter.
10. 4. Odometer
• Measures long distances such as
highway travel.
• Also called odograph, it indicates
the distance traveled by a vehicle,
such as bicycle or an automobile.
• It is installed in the vehicle.
• It can be electronic, mechanical, or
a combination of two.
11. 5. Satellite and Laser Range Finder
• A high-tech equipment that are
used to measure distance over
long ranges, such as airplanes and
ocean liners.
