SOUND ENERGY
SOUND ENERGY
- energy that is produced when vibrations travel through matter.
- Vibrations – quick back-and-forth movements of matter that cause it to
to produce sound.
• People and animals produce sound.
• musical instruments, car horns, house appliances, and construction
equipment are just a few of the countless objects that produce sound
through vibrations.
– These vibrations travel usually through air, but also through such media as
water and steel.
HOW SOUND TRAVELS
Vibrations from an object cause the air in its surroundings to produce
sound waves, which then transmit the sound outward in different
directions.
When the waves reach your ears, they are transformed into messages in
the form of sound.
Your brain picks up the messages then processes them so you are able
to identify the kind of sound you heard.
Sound travels at different speeds, depending on the kind of matter
making the sound and the medium through which the sound travels.
HOW SOUND TRAVELS
Matter is made of molecules, or very tiny particles.
Sound waves pass easily through solids materials because….
Sound waves moves slower in liquids because…
Sound waves travels more difficult in gas because…
HOW SOUND TRAVELS
Sound travels so much more
slowly than light.
Light moves at about 300 000
000 meters per second while
sound travels at only 340 meters
per second. This explain why you
may hear the sound of an object
long after you have seen it.
Notice how, during thunderstorm,
you see flashes of lightning
before you hear the sound that
they make.
• There are no particles of matter
in outer space. Thus, sound
waves are not able to travel in it.
Inside the spacecraft astronauts
can talk to each other because
there is air inside the spacecraft.
However, when they are out in
space, astronauts use special
instruments that allow them to
talk to and hear each other.
PROTECTION FROM NOISE
Stay away from noisy places. When you are exposed to loud noises, tiny
hairs inside your ears may be damaged and this can lead to loss of your
sense of hearing.
Avoid listening to sounds at very close range and on regular basis. If you
must listen at close range, turn down the volume of the sounds you are
listening to, especially when you are hearing them through gadgets like
music players and mobile phones.
Wear hearing protection such as ear muffs or ear plugs when engaging
activities that create a lot of sound, such as woodworking and welding.
Ear muffs and ear plugs lessen the sounds that are transmitted to your
ears,
