Essay On Startup
In my experience, few people understand the many different ways that a start–up must be managed as compared to more mature companies. Decisions
must be faster, risks must be higher, and the solutions that are developed must be less complete (80% or less) and more narrowly targeted. During the
bubble many "big company" executives were recruited to run startups with little more than an idea and a huge VC investment. This, of course, came
back to haunt the investors when they realized too late that running a startup is a very different animal than a larger company. Most of these
executives, though looking good on paper and in front of a board, were fish out of water in any startup company, no matter how much money they had
in the bank. There...show more content...
Replace anyone who does not believe that they can develop a product in 12–18 months. Most should be 6 months maximum after the team is in place.
Expect, and constantly make, small course changes daily, then weekly, and then monthly. Iterate towards the best customer focused solution until you
hit gold and find a solution the customer cannot live without and is different than anything else out there. This means constantly showing potential
customers what you have so far. Although many entrepreneurs are paranoid about this, it is clearly a NECESSARY evil. So get a confidentiality
agreement signed and share your progress and ideas in exchange for feedback. A startup is like a heat seeking missile and requires constant course
corrections. Be willing to take significant calculated risks and manage those risks aggressively by tracking them closely. Keep a list of major risks
and assign each key risk to a specific senior individual to always be thinking about, tracking and managing. You must remain flexible; do not invest time
and money in things that can change rapidly, invest only in those fundamental things that will have sustainable value. Many companies blow resources
on things they know will not last because a single customer wants a special feature. Early stage companies cannot afford much of this. Don't fall into
this trap! You must build value long–term by investing in things that

Hooks: A Short Story
Tendrils of searing, agonising pain surged across the young woman's flesh, pervading into the layers of her skin as a curved, serrated–edged blade
glided smoothly across the sensitive skin of her stomach. Hooks, scorching hot, were embedded deep into the ashen flesh of her shoulders. She sunk
her teeth into the plump flesh of her bottom lip, sobs piling up at the hollow of her throat and threatening to spill as the twenty–one year old woman
thrashed against the many hands holding her down. Her arms were numb, splayed away from her body at a perpendicular angle. Long, delicate and
pale fingers –calloused by hard work and long hours– were attached to bony wrists, bound by thick, wrought–iron chains, barbed with sharp needles,
blood oozing from

Essay about Athens, Greece
Athens, Greece
Athens was the intellectual center of Greece. It was one of the first city–states of its time, and is still known as one of the most famous cities in the
world. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the city's patron. In 508 B.C., Athens became one of the first societies in ancient times to
invent democracy. Democracy came from the Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratein, meaning to rule. This form of government was usually
held in a meeting place, which the Athenians called the Assembly. Here the citizens ofAthens met monthly and discussed the affairs of state. There
were no decisions made by government without first asking the Assembly.
The ancient Athenians were a unique people. They...show more content...
The exporting area of Athens economy reached then Sicily, Egypt, and the Black Sea. New monuments were built and the city experienced its first
jump in culture and arts. Athens was also the prime fighter during the war with Persia. This war aided by the existence of democratic governing helped
Athens become Greece's leading city and the center of an allied state.
The territory was not powerful enough to keep the Macedonian King Fillipe II (338 B.C.) from taking Attica and adding it to the Macedonian states. In
146 B.C. Athens was controlled, together with the rest of Greece, by the Romans, who although they were conquerors, they showed respect for the city
and it's personality. After the first years A.C., Gothic tribes destructed Athens. The integration with the Byzantine Empire was finalized with the shut
down of Philosophic Schools, the changing of shrines to Christian temples and the general city of Athens. After year 1214, when the Franks occupied
Constantinople, Athens was given to French dukes. Their successors were Catalans, Napolitans and finally in 1456 the Turks who were the first after
all these years to turn the Acropolis into a Muslim Temple "Tzami", and the Erehthion to a harem.
Until 1834, one year after its revolution from the Turks, when Athens was proclaimed capital of Greece, it was a miserable village with very few
people and piles of ancient ruins and stones. Though it was accepted as a place with a

The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay
The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a topic to be written about, but in some cases that
may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic. The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable
about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about, will take away the anxiety of not knowing where
to start or what to write about. If you chose to challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick a
topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a paper about cars, do not make cars what your
paper is about, because although it is a broad topic it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed
our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write about and leaves the door open to give you more to
write about. The second step, and what I believe to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without
sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from. Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay
is about "how technology has benefited students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how technology is used in

Keeping Close to Home by bell hooks Essay
Because it is very credible, emotionally appealing, and slightly academically based, bell hooks's essay "Keeping Close to Home: Class and
Education" is an essay that I consider to be very touching. While arguing in her essay that the rich class and the working–class should come to respect
and understand each other, bell hooks employs three elements of argument: ethos, pathos, and logos. With her usage of ethos, hooks relates her
experience as an undergraduate at Stanford. Providing an experience from a time before she went to Stanford, hooks uses pathos to inspire the
audience. However, hooks uses logos by appealing to the readers' logic. These readers are the working–class and the privileged, the audience of her
book: "Ain't I...show more content...
hooks felt hurt because her dad was a janitor. That was why it was so hard for her to look down on the working–class. Would it be easy for you to be
able to suddenly look down upon your parents if they raised you to respect them? Because Stanford even accepted her into their institution, hooks
felt as though she needed to act privileged. When she refused, the university and its students considered her rebellious; however, if she had not
refused, she would have been ignoring and forgetting the values that she had learned from her parents. Using pathos by inspiring the audience and
appealing to its emotions and values, hooks relates an example of the hard times in her relationship with her parents before she went to Stanford. In
the example, she describes how her parents were reluctant to allow her to go because they felt that a closer college had a good education to offer,
also. hooks also expresses how she became upset with her parents and how her mama felt as though bell hooks lacked appreciation for her. bell
hooks's mama says to her, "Your childhood could not have been that bad. You were fed and clothed. You did not have to do without– that's more than a
lot of folks have and I just can't stand the way y'all go on" (86). Later, when bell hooks attends to Stanford and notices how students constantly feel

Essay on Adaptive leadership
Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and
innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These
officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is
transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a
nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in
the process of...show more content...
Another aspect that Leonard Wong touched on was that because our country is in war this is the reason
why so much adaptive leadership is being produced. The war in Iraq is very complex and therefore requires leaders to step out of the box and
make decisions on the fly. While in garrison leaders are in a sense hindered due to complex issues such as personnel, logistics, or training exercises.
All these things are very necessary and help prepare the U.S. Army for situations they find themselves in over in Iraq. However, just like basketball
or any other sport some might say "practice makes perfect" but it is argued that true experience comes during game time. When situations are not
simulated and it requires you to think on the fly and adjust to any imperfections you might find in your team. This is the same case for post war Iraq.
We are putting leaders in leadership positions and developing the skills they have been taught and trained on constantly day after day in garrison.
The concept that is stressed in the Army from day to day is "Attention to detail." The margin for error is so
small that, one second too soon or one second too late, could cost someone their life. All leaders in the Army have this imprinted in their minds and
hearts. They are required to carry out various tasks from day to day, some of which they are not sufficiently trained on, but they make due with what

Technology Argumentative Essay
Today's society has advanced so this past decade. So much to the point we use it at a daily basis. Technology does have it's perks, but are we getting
too dependent on it? Technology has its advantages in many ways and I know firsthand how powerful and convenient today's technology is. Without
it, I would have a lot of trouble getting through my day. I would not be able to get a hold of someone as easy without my blackberry. I am constantly
text messaging on it. So much to the point that I trip over stuff while I am walking due to reading a long text. My blackberry is basically my life. It is
great to know that if I ever get stranded in the middle of a desert on my way to California, I have roadside assistance on my phone to save me. I...show

Life is more simple with these wonderful devices, but we are becoming too lazy to pick up a book and learn things on our own. I feel like I and many
of my classmates barley open a book for class, instead we use the internet for everything. This is becoming a serious issue. I feel that we are not
expanding our minds like we used to back when technology was not as advanced. I remember back in middle school were the internet was available,
but I did not let it take up time in my day. I found myself being more productive with my life back then. Now, I probably spent a fourth of my day
using the internet, which is not necessary at all. With so much power to discover new things without even thinking makes me wonder what will
happen to our next generation as technology advances. Are we headed for a world where everything is technology driven and devoid of what
makes us human? I look at today's society and I feel that it is really getting to that point. It is almost as if we are turning into robots. We are
divorcing ourselves from regular human activities. `We are now getting to the point where we are programmed to use technology at a daily basis. My
generation needs to realize that there are many other types of activities that give us greater satisfaction than anything that is offered online. Instead of
spending two to three hours text messaging a friend, social networking and checking listings on Ebay, we should really take a visit to a local

Essay about Suicide
Someone, somewhere, commits suicide every 18 minutes. You might never be able to tell who it will be, it could be the person sitting right next .
Statistics reveal that approximately three million youths, between 12–18, have either thought about or attempted suicide in the past year. More than 1
/3, actually succeeded.
Only in the past two decades, have depression and suicide been taken seriously. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts.
Depression affects the way a person eats and sleeps, feels about themselves, and the way they think of the things around them. It comes as no surprise to
discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide. Adolescent suicide is now responsible for more deaths...show more content...
Adolescence is a stressful experience for all teens. It is a time of physical and social changes producing rapid mood swings from sadness to elation.
Even an emotionally healthy teenager may have the constant fear of not being good enough, not making the varsity team, or getting good grades.
Special situations such as a parents divorce can trigger intense sadness and feelings of wanting to die.
People who usually experience depression, can seem fine. But there are many key signs to show that they are depressed. Such as, change in school
performance, eating habits change, constant unhappiness, low self esteem, guilt, social isolation, inability to concentrate, irritable or angered easily, or
has a severe lost of energy.
For a teen suffering from severe depression, has feelings of worthlessness that dominates their day. Despair is ever present and emotional pain feels
like it will never end. Any situation of anger or disappointment may cause the teen to cross the line from wanting to die, to actually trying to kill
themselves.
Many of them feel pains inside of them, that they can't describe when someone asks them how they feel. They just know that they are sad, or angry, or
upset. Many teenagers will try to communicate their pains through

Argumentative Essay On Screen Time
Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a
daily bases many kids seem to spend more time inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is
becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology or not. Parents either seem to have strict
technology usage, or they either don't. There has always been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could
cause problems later on in life. There are many views towards this topic, from hurting kids brains, to helping them during school, and socially.

In order to balance both there has to be comparative with the parents. Technology isn't good nor bad. It can only benefit the child if the parents put a
limit to their time in the screen. Parents need to set up a schedule in where the kids will follow the time the kids will be using the tablet/ phone. As well
have time to play with other kids, and just interact with there own family member. In the article, Screen time: A guide for parents states, " keeping
computers out of the bedroom, and keep them in a common area in your house. This will make sure that the child isn't using their computers/ tablets
during the time they have to rest. Kids need to have a good rest, and not having technology in their rooms because it could cause irregular sleep. Just
having the parent take action in how much kids need to spend time in the screens can be a good start. Luscombe argues, " Take away the idea that all
screens are bad, but the face–to –face time for young people is an important part of the socialization process". Parents seem to not understand that
children need to develop good social skills, and that can only be done by interacting with others, and get a sense on others points of views. Parents
need to stop giving the kids technology to keep them quiet for a while, because at the end it's hurting the child

Perseverance Essay
What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice
one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal
and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all
efforts to succeed.
We are high school students and that means that the sense of urgency to strive for and to achieve personal success is now. With this urgency comes
the expectation of having to persevere. This year has not been as easy one for us as a school body. We have been

There is no shame in falling; the shame is in accepting the the fall as defeat. Nelson Mandella once said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never
falling, but in rising every time you fall." That is the essence of persevering––finding the will to get up even though you know you are being counted
out.
Each day is a challenge for some of us. Some of you struggle to get up each morning and make it to school. But you find it within yourself to do
because the hope of a better tomorrow compels you to do so. It is not easy to explain to teachers or other students that there was no one to wake
you up and see that you were ready for school. The moment you leave your house and step on the bus, you are one step closer to realizing your
dream, to fulfilling your purpose. That is what perseverance is. It is the finding the strength to do the impossible because you know that all things
are possible. It is understanding that your tomorrow has great possibilities because of the steps you take today. I had a neighbor whose parents were
divorced, but it seems like both parents divorced her. Her mother had custody, but she was seldom around. My friend raised herself. She gave a whole
new meaning to the phrase "putting yourself through school", but she was in middle school. However, she had a dream of something better and it was

Informative Essay Hook
Pinkston, Anna Dr. Jeff Newberry ENGL 1101H August 26, 2017 As my ninth

start your essay, no one will ever read it. As I was taught, a hook is a crucial part in your essay because it will help grab the audience's attention so
that they will continue to be invested throughout the paper. For example, the hook could be a question or a quote about the overall topic of your
essay. In my junior year, we had to do a controversial essay and I used a quote from a famous tattoo artist as my hook because I did my essay over
tattoos and piercings. After the hook, the introduction begins to take form and show the audience what your essay is about. The introduction is the
first thing in your essay that will tell the audience what the essay is about. The introduction paragraph should be as interesting as the initial hook and
keep the audience invested in the paper. It will establish the basis of the essay and should contain the thesis statement. The thesis statement is the point
in your essay where you will state the topics that the essay will contain. In high school, we were taught that the thesis should contain the three points
that you will elaborate upon in your three body paragraphs: the weakest point, the middle point, and the strongest point. The first body paragraph
should be the weakest or simplest way to get the overall point of the essay across to the readers. This will be the foundation of all three points,

An Introduction to Globalization Essay
Globalization is a historical phenomenon that has been happening for decades now, and whether it generates growth or not is a matter of whose point
of view it is. The western countries, especially America and some European nations, are the ones taking full advantage of the benefits of globalization.
On the other hand, some experts say that globalization is not doing much for the developing countries, or that it may be even worsening their scenarios
of poverty and social inequality. But, I will get back to that later . The point is that globalization, while it was primarily triggered by the emergence of a

We are in the era of free information flow and democratization of communication tools. Through the Internet, people are able to produce content and
distribute it in many different ways to infinite different people. What is really amazing is that the idea of distance lost its significance. Now, you are
able to communicate from your house in the south of Brazil with friends who live in India, America or any other place in the world. Messages are
overcoming huge distances because of technological improvements and the implementation of global networks. The third movement is political.
Basically, it means that since globalization implies a compression of national boundaries, which were brought about by the increase of trade at the
global level, the importance of both the activity of international legal institutions and treats, like the World Trade Organization, and the dialogue
between political leaders of different nations has risen significantly. Also, in the globalized world we see a quite interesting phenomenon: the
importance given by nations' leaders to their self–image in the international political scene. Think this way: when countries were not dependent on the
businesses they had with other countries why would presidents bother to be admired by other national leaders? What we see now is a scenario where
nations' leaders struggle for status among the international political elite. The last set

Child Labor Essay example
Child labor is considered as a form of child abuse, it being the exploitation of a child's rights and freedoms. Therefore, child labour is when underage
children are employed, this happens because a child labourer is paid less than an adult labourer. Consequently employers have more children working
for them because they spend less paying the children.
"Child labor usually means work that is done by children under the age of 15 (14 in some developing countries) that restricts or damages a child's
physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual growth."1
Child labour is not something that just recently evolved. As a matter of fact, child labour dates back to the 1780s and the 1840s, where child labour
was predominant worldwide. In 1788, it...show more content...
Although there are efforts to put an end to child labour in the world of today, they does not seem to be enough. This is because even though there is a
decrease in the number of children that experience child labour, the change is not significant. The level of child labour continues to increase.
Presumably, in the societies where child labour is the way of life, only few individuals master the courage to speak against it. Unfortunately, their
voices are unheard. For instance, in India there are efforts to lessen the number of child labourers, but culture always gets in the way. This results in
children working under very poor conditions that pose a danger to their health on short–term and long–term scale. However, in Canada the law states
that:
"Section 72 imposes a statutory duty on every person to report certain suspicions are based, to a children's aid society."2
"... a professional has a legal obligation to immediately report suspected child abuse."3
Usually, there is a reason behind everything that occurs in the world. For instance, the purpose of going to school is to educate ourselves so that we
can have a bright future ahead of us. The main cause of child labour is poverty, which is heavily inclined by culture which varies with different
societies. In India, culture is the way of life. Closely related to customs, culture this merely provides guidelines to the people within a society on how
to conduct their daily lives.

bell hooks, American feminist writer and literary critic, once said, "The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility." Even
when she wrote these words over 20 years ago in 1994, there was a clear, unsullied idea of what a child's education should be composed

The Holocaust was the murder and persecution of approximately 6 million Jews and many others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The

obscurity to power after taking advantage of the weaknesses of his enemies. On January 20 of 1933, he was named chancellor of Germany. When
President Paul von Hindenburg died in 1934, Adolf appointed himself as Germany's ruler. At first, the Nazis were only killing political opponents
like Communists and/or Social Democrats, for which their harshest persecution was used. Many of the first prisoners sent to Dachau (The first
official concentration camp opened near Munich in March of 1933) were communists. By July, the concentration camps run by the Germans held
around 27,000 people in what they called "protective custody." The Nazis had huge rallies and acts of symbolism such as burning of books by Jews.
During the years of 1933 to 1939, the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were able to leave Germany got out quickly, but many were left behind, and
they lived their lives in a constant state of uncertainty and fear. During the fall of 1939, Hitler started the so–called Euthanasia Program. The
Euthanasia Program allowed Nazi officials to select around 70,000 German citizens institutionalized for mental illnesses or disabilities. These Germans
were to be gassed to death. After prominent German

Essay On Startup

  • 1. Essay On Startup In my experience, few people understand the many different ways that a start–up must be managed as compared to more mature companies. Decisions must be faster, risks must be higher, and the solutions that are developed must be less complete (80% or less) and more narrowly targeted. During the bubble many "big company" executives were recruited to run startups with little more than an idea and a huge VC investment. This, of course, came back to haunt the investors when they realized too late that running a startup is a very different animal than a larger company. Most of these executives, though looking good on paper and in front of a board, were fish out of water in any startup company, no matter how much money they had in the bank. There...show more content... Replace anyone who does not believe that they can develop a product in 12–18 months. Most should be 6 months maximum after the team is in place. Expect, and constantly make, small course changes daily, then weekly, and then monthly. Iterate towards the best customer focused solution until you hit gold and find a solution the customer cannot live without and is different than anything else out there. This means constantly showing potential customers what you have so far. Although many entrepreneurs are paranoid about this, it is clearly a NECESSARY evil. So get a confidentiality agreement signed and share your progress and ideas in exchange for feedback. A startup is like a heat seeking missile and requires constant course corrections. Be willing to take significant calculated risks and manage those risks aggressively by tracking them closely. Keep a list of major risks and assign each key risk to a specific senior individual to always be thinking about, tracking and managing. You must remain flexible; do not invest time and money in things that can change rapidly, invest only in those fundamental things that will have sustainable value. Many companies blow resources on things they know will not last because a single customer wants a special feature. Early stage companies cannot afford much of this. Don't fall into this trap! You must build value long–term by investing in things that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Hooks: A Short Story Tendrils of searing, agonising pain surged across the young woman's flesh, pervading into the layers of her skin as a curved, serrated–edged blade glided smoothly across the sensitive skin of her stomach. Hooks, scorching hot, were embedded deep into the ashen flesh of her shoulders. She sunk her teeth into the plump flesh of her bottom lip, sobs piling up at the hollow of her throat and threatening to spill as the twenty–one year old woman thrashed against the many hands holding her down. Her arms were numb, splayed away from her body at a perpendicular angle. Long, delicate and pale fingers –calloused by hard work and long hours– were attached to bony wrists, bound by thick, wrought–iron chains, barbed with sharp needles, blood oozing from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay about Athens, Greece Athens, Greece Athens was the intellectual center of Greece. It was one of the first city–states of its time, and is still known as one of the most famous cities in the world. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the city's patron. In 508 B.C., Athens became one of the first societies in ancient times to invent democracy. Democracy came from the Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratein, meaning to rule. This form of government was usually held in a meeting place, which the Athenians called the Assembly. Here the citizens ofAthens met monthly and discussed the affairs of state. There were no decisions made by government without first asking the Assembly. The ancient Athenians were a unique people. They...show more content... The exporting area of Athens economy reached then Sicily, Egypt, and the Black Sea. New monuments were built and the city experienced its first jump in culture and arts. Athens was also the prime fighter during the war with Persia. This war aided by the existence of democratic governing helped Athens become Greece's leading city and the center of an allied state. The territory was not powerful enough to keep the Macedonian King Fillipe II (338 B.C.) from taking Attica and adding it to the Macedonian states. In 146 B.C. Athens was controlled, together with the rest of Greece, by the Romans, who although they were conquerors, they showed respect for the city and it's personality. After the first years A.C., Gothic tribes destructed Athens. The integration with the Byzantine Empire was finalized with the shut down of Philosophic Schools, the changing of shrines to Christian temples and the general city of Athens. After year 1214, when the Franks occupied Constantinople, Athens was given to French dukes. Their successors were Catalans, Napolitans and finally in 1456 the Turks who were the first after all these years to turn the Acropolis into a Muslim Temple "Tzami", and the Erehthion to a harem. Until 1834, one year after its revolution from the Turks, when Athens was proclaimed capital of Greece, it was a miserable village with very few people and piles of ancient ruins and stones. Though it was accepted as a place with a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a topic to be written about, but in some cases that may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic. The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about, will take away the anxiety of not knowing where to start or what to write about. If you chose to challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick a topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a paper about cars, do not make cars what your paper is about, because although it is a broad topic it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write about and leaves the door open to give you more to write about. The second step, and what I believe to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from. Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay is about "how technology has benefited students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how technology is used in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Keeping Close to Home by bell hooks Essay Because it is very credible, emotionally appealing, and slightly academically based, bell hooks's essay "Keeping Close to Home: Class and Education" is an essay that I consider to be very touching. While arguing in her essay that the rich class and the working–class should come to respect and understand each other, bell hooks employs three elements of argument: ethos, pathos, and logos. With her usage of ethos, hooks relates her experience as an undergraduate at Stanford. Providing an experience from a time before she went to Stanford, hooks uses pathos to inspire the audience. However, hooks uses logos by appealing to the readers' logic. These readers are the working–class and the privileged, the audience of her book: "Ain't I...show more content... hooks felt hurt because her dad was a janitor. That was why it was so hard for her to look down on the working–class. Would it be easy for you to be able to suddenly look down upon your parents if they raised you to respect them? Because Stanford even accepted her into their institution, hooks felt as though she needed to act privileged. When she refused, the university and its students considered her rebellious; however, if she had not refused, she would have been ignoring and forgetting the values that she had learned from her parents. Using pathos by inspiring the audience and appealing to its emotions and values, hooks relates an example of the hard times in her relationship with her parents before she went to Stanford. In the example, she describes how her parents were reluctant to allow her to go because they felt that a closer college had a good education to offer, also. hooks also expresses how she became upset with her parents and how her mama felt as though bell hooks lacked appreciation for her. bell hooks's mama says to her, "Your childhood could not have been that bad. You were fed and clothed. You did not have to do without– that's more than a lot of folks have and I just can't stand the way y'all go on" (86). Later, when bell hooks attends to Stanford and notices how students constantly feel anger and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on Adaptive leadership Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in the process of...show more content...      Another aspect that Leonard Wong touched on was that because our country is in war this is the reason why so much adaptive leadership is being produced. The war in Iraq is very complex and therefore requires leaders to step out of the box and make decisions on the fly. While in garrison leaders are in a sense hindered due to complex issues such as personnel, logistics, or training exercises. All these things are very necessary and help prepare the U.S. Army for situations they find themselves in over in Iraq. However, just like basketball or any other sport some might say "practice makes perfect" but it is argued that true experience comes during game time. When situations are not simulated and it requires you to think on the fly and adjust to any imperfections you might find in your team. This is the same case for post war Iraq. We are putting leaders in leadership positions and developing the skills they have been taught and trained on constantly day after day in garrison.      The concept that is stressed in the Army from day to day is "Attention to detail." The margin for error is so small that, one second too soon or one second too late, could cost someone their life. All leaders in the Army have this imprinted in their minds and hearts. They are required to carry out various tasks from day to day, some of which they are not sufficiently trained on, but they make due with what they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Technology Argumentative Essay Today's society has advanced so this past decade. So much to the point we use it at a daily basis. Technology does have it's perks, but are we getting too dependent on it? Technology has its advantages in many ways and I know firsthand how powerful and convenient today's technology is. Without it, I would have a lot of trouble getting through my day. I would not be able to get a hold of someone as easy without my blackberry. I am constantly text messaging on it. So much to the point that I trip over stuff while I am walking due to reading a long text. My blackberry is basically my life. It is great to know that if I ever get stranded in the middle of a desert on my way to California, I have roadside assistance on my phone to save me. I...show more content... Life is more simple with these wonderful devices, but we are becoming too lazy to pick up a book and learn things on our own. I feel like I and many of my classmates barley open a book for class, instead we use the internet for everything. This is becoming a serious issue. I feel that we are not expanding our minds like we used to back when technology was not as advanced. I remember back in middle school were the internet was available, but I did not let it take up time in my day. I found myself being more productive with my life back then. Now, I probably spent a fourth of my day using the internet, which is not necessary at all. With so much power to discover new things without even thinking makes me wonder what will happen to our next generation as technology advances. Are we headed for a world where everything is technology driven and devoid of what makes us human? I look at today's society and I feel that it is really getting to that point. It is almost as if we are turning into robots. We are divorcing ourselves from regular human activities. `We are now getting to the point where we are programmed to use technology at a daily basis. My generation needs to realize that there are many other types of activities that give us greater satisfaction than anything that is offered online. Instead of spending two to three hours text messaging a friend, social networking and checking listings on Ebay, we should really take a visit to a local Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay about Suicide Someone, somewhere, commits suicide every 18 minutes. You might never be able to tell who it will be, it could be the person sitting right next . Statistics reveal that approximately three million youths, between 12–18, have either thought about or attempted suicide in the past year. More than 1 /3, actually succeeded. Only in the past two decades, have depression and suicide been taken seriously. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. Depression affects the way a person eats and sleeps, feels about themselves, and the way they think of the things around them. It comes as no surprise to discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide. Such as, change in school performance, eating habits change, constant unhappiness, low self esteem, guilt, social isolation, inability to concentrate, irritable or angered easily, or has a severe lost of energy. For a teen suffering from severe depression, has feelings of worthlessness that dominates their day. Despair is ever present and emotional pain feels like it will never end. Any situation of anger or disappointment may cause the teen to cross the line from wanting to die, to actually trying to kill themselves. Many of them feel pains inside of them, that they can't describe when someone asks them how they feel. They just know that they are sad, or angry, or upset. Many teenagers will try to communicate their pains through Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Argumentative Essay On Screen Time Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a daily bases many kids seem to spend more time inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology or not. Parents either seem to have strict technology usage, or they either don't. There has always been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could cause problems later on in life. There are many views towards this topic, from hurting kids brains, to helping them during school, and socially. Many people, including...show more content... In order to balance both there has to be comparative with the parents. Technology isn't good nor bad. It can only benefit the child if the parents put a limit to their time in the screen. Parents need to set up a schedule in where the kids will follow the time the kids will be using the tablet/ phone. As well have time to play with other kids, and just interact with there own family member. In the article, Screen time: A guide for parents states, " keeping computers out of the bedroom, and keep them in a common area in your house. This will make sure that the child isn't using their computers/ tablets during the time they have to rest. Kids need to have a good rest, and not having technology in their rooms because it could cause irregular sleep. Just having the parent take action in how much kids need to spend time in the screens can be a good start. Luscombe argues, " Take away the idea that all screens are bad, but the face–to –face time for young people is an important part of the socialization process". Parents seem to not understand that children need to develop good social skills, and that can only be done by interacting with others, and get a sense on others points of views. Parents need to stop giving the kids technology to keep them quiet for a while, because at the end it's hurting the child Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Perseverance Essay What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed. We are high school students and that means that the sense of urgency to strive for and to achieve personal success is now. With this urgency comes the expectation of having to persevere. This year has not been as easy one for us as a school body. We have been ...show more content... There is no shame in falling; the shame is in accepting the the fall as defeat. Nelson Mandella once said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall." That is the essence of persevering––finding the will to get up even though you know you are being counted out. Each day is a challenge for some of us. Some of you struggle to get up each morning and make it to school. But you find it within yourself to do because the hope of a better tomorrow compels you to do so. It is not easy to explain to teachers or other students that there was no one to wake you up and see that you were ready for school. The moment you leave your house and step on the bus, you are one step closer to realizing your dream, to fulfilling your purpose. That is what perseverance is. It is the finding the strength to do the impossible because you know that all things are possible. It is understanding that your tomorrow has great possibilities because of the steps you take today. I had a neighbor whose parents were divorced, but it seems like both parents divorced her. Her mother had custody, but she was seldom around. My friend raised herself. She gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "putting yourself through school", but she was in middle school. However, she had a dream of something better and it was evident that it required self–motivation and determination. We have all been called upon Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Informative Essay Hook Pinkston, Anna Dr. Jeff Newberry ENGL 1101H August 26, 2017 As my ninth –grade English teacher, Mrs. Newton would say, without a good hook to start your essay, no one will ever read it. As I was taught, a hook is a crucial part in your essay because it will help grab the audience's attention so that they will continue to be invested throughout the paper. For example, the hook could be a question or a quote about the overall topic of your essay. In my junior year, we had to do a controversial essay and I used a quote from a famous tattoo artist as my hook because I did my essay over tattoos and piercings. After the hook, the introduction begins to take form and show the audience what your essay is about. The introduction is the first thing in your essay that will tell the audience what the essay is about. The introduction paragraph should be as interesting as the initial hook and keep the audience invested in the paper. It will establish the basis of the essay and should contain the thesis statement. The thesis statement is the point in your essay where you will state the topics that the essay will contain. In high school, we were taught that the thesis should contain the three points that you will elaborate upon in your three body paragraphs: the weakest point, the middle point, and the strongest point. • 12. An Introduction to Globalization Essay Globalization is a historical phenomenon that has been happening for decades now, and whether it generates growth or not is a matter of whose point of view it is. The western countries, especially America and some European nations, are the ones taking full advantage of the benefits of globalization. On the other hand, some experts say that globalization is not doing much for the developing countries, or that it may be even worsening their scenarios of poverty and social inequality. But, I will get back to that later . The point is that globalization, while it was primarily triggered by the emergence of a global market and facilitated by the democratization of communication technologies, also caused cultural, social and even political...show more content... We are in the era of free information flow and democratization of communication tools. Through the Internet, people are able to produce content and distribute it in many different ways to infinite different people. What is really amazing is that the idea of distance lost its significance. Now, you are able to communicate from your house in the south of Brazil with friends who live in India, America or any other place in the world. Messages are overcoming huge distances because of technological improvements and the implementation of global networks. The third movement is political. Basically, it means that since globalization implies a compression of national boundaries, which were brought about by the increase of trade at the global level, the importance of both the activity of international legal institutions and treats, like the World Trade Organization, and the dialogue between political leaders of different nations has risen significantly. Also, in the globalized world we see a quite interesting phenomenon: the importance given by nations' leaders to their self–image in the international political scene. Think this way: when countries were not dependent on the businesses they had with other countries why would presidents bother to be admired by other national leaders? What we see now is a scenario where nations' leaders struggle for status among the international political elite. The last set Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Child Labor Essay example Child labor is considered as a form of child abuse, it being the exploitation of a child's rights and freedoms. Therefore, child labour is when underage children are employed, this happens because a child labourer is paid less than an adult labourer. Consequently employers have more children working for them because they spend less paying the children. "Child labor usually means work that is done by children under the age of 15 (14 in some developing countries) that restricts or damages a child's physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual growth."1 Child labour is not something that just recently evolved. As a matter of fact, child labour dates back to the 1780s and the 1840s, where child labour was predominant worldwide. In 1788, it...show more content... Although there are efforts to put an end to child labour in the world of today, they does not seem to be enough. This is because even though there is a decrease in the number of children that experience child labour, the change is not significant. The level of child labour continues to increase. Presumably, in the societies where child labour is the way of life, only few individuals master the courage to speak against it. Unfortunately, their voices are unheard. For instance, in India there are efforts to lessen the number of child labourers, but culture always gets in the way. This results in children working under very poor conditions that pose a danger to their health on short–term and long–term scale. However, in Canada the law states that: "Section 72 imposes a statutory duty on every person to report certain suspicions are based, to a children's aid society."2 "... a professional has a legal obligation to immediately report suspected child abuse."3 Usually, there is a reason behind everything that occurs in the world. For instance, the purpose of going to school is to educate ourselves so that we can have a bright future ahead of us. The main cause of child labour is poverty, which is heavily inclined by culture which varies with different societies. In India, culture is the way of life. Closely related to customs, culture this merely provides guidelines to the people within a society on how to conduct their daily lives. 2 Zuker, Marvin A., Randolph C. • 14. Later School Start Times Essay Later School Start Times Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. Schools everywhere should start later because it would benefit the students and teachers. All children need sleep and want sleep during the weekdays and that is very difficult. It has been noticed that older students and younger ...show more content... Adolescents and adults need around 9 hours of sleep daily (De Souza 5). Since schools are starting so early, they can not get the needed sleep time, eight to nine hours. Even though teachers go to school the same time as students, consequences are worse in students and it seems to have more of a critical effect on students. No matter if it is a student or a teacher, the quality of sleep is very important for everybody.Students need a good amount of sleep to be able to focus and get through the school day. Students ability to function during school is impacted by the quantity, regularity, and quality if their sleep (Wolfson 1). The quality of sleep is not only important for the students but it is also important for the teachers. The quality of sleep affects the way students and teachers act throughout the day. Daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality on school days in students and teachers may comprise school and work performance (De Souza 5). Since students and teachers stay up so late at night, they tend to be very tired during the day. It is important to get sleep but it is more important to get a good sleep. There is not really a point in sleeping or trying to get sleep when it is not a good sleep because no matter what students will be tired during the day. While the quality of sleep is important, so is the amount of sleep a student or teacher is getting on school nights. The amount of sleep students Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. My Personal Strengths and Weaknesses Essay I believe that life is a learning experience and being able to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses can help us become better individuals in anything we choose to do, whether it is positive abilities and skills that can help achieve our goals or negative personal areas that need improvement. Knowing yourself and what you can do, can help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses. One of my greatest strengths at work that I have recognized would have to be my ability to be a well–organized individual. I tend to write what I have to do down on paper and prioritize what is more important to least important. In doing this, it helps me organize and accomplish my work and meet deadlines that are important. A personal strength ...show more content... I am certain that because of my strengths, I am good at what I do however; I do have weaknesses that I have to overcome and improve. My personal weakness at work is lack of leadership. Currently I am in a position in which I do not possess the title of management. As a result, I basically feel that I do not have to show leadership or take initiative to take on the responsibilities of a manager when in reality, I am not. One of my weaknesses at home is time management. This is a weakness that I have had to struggle with since my daughter was born. It is hard for me to try to juggle being a full time single parent, working a full time job and attending school full time. I always feel that there is never enough time to accomplish my tasks whether it is household chores, work related or assignments for school. Most importantly I have to make sure that I am readily available for my child at all times. In a Learning team, presentation skills are very important. I would have to say that Presentation Skills would be one of my personal weaknesses in the Learning team. It is difficult for me at times to stand up in front of a room full of people and present a project or conduct some sort of meeting. In order to do so, you have to have confidence that what you?re talking about is accurate and the motivation to actually get up do it. My biggest fear of a presentation would be tripping and falling on my face or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Bell Hooks's Education bell hooks, American feminist writer and literary critic, once said, "The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility." Even when she wrote these words over 20 years ago in 1994, there was a clear, unsullied idea of what a child's education should be composed ofв”Ђpossibilities. In the time of hooks' writing, America's people were being tested on their strength as the deindustrialization of major cities occurred, leaving most of the factory workers without money and homeless. After Reagan left office, there was an abundance to clean up. The country's people were trying to create possibilities that might work out. The American school system remains about what hooks said: possibilities. Even with the media continuously...show more content... We see constant disparities in funding within our school system between class and between race. Because of this, we need to regulate the funding between the "good school bad school poor school rich school" paradigm. Why aren't there already laws permitting and enforcing equal funding? In the ruling of Rodriguez vs. San Antonio Independent School district, it was found that even if it was completely morally ethical, laws against or for inequitable funding are not in the constitution and therefore it cannot be ruled upon in the high court. So, even if two schools in the same district are within a 10,000 dollars funding difference, a pupil cannot do anything about it because it doesn't say anything about it in the constitution. States in the deep south, like Texas and Alabama, get the least funding, says a study done by the National Law Center for Education. The U.S. average for funding per state is $10,132 for one pupil. Tennessee's money spent per pupil is $6,839. Also, Tennessee has one of the lowest GDPs and its education effort is one of the lowest. Why is this? Because Tennessee still didn't take advantage of its fiscal capacity, and that's why it received an F on the effort scale. In a study done by Education Trust, it said that there is a 1,200 dollar gap between the districts with the most poverty and the districts with the least Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Essay about The Holocaust The Holocaust was the murder and persecution of approximately 6 million Jews and many others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The Nazis came to power in Germany in January of 1933. The Nazis thought that the "inferior" Jews were a threat to the "racially superior" German racial community. The death camps were operated from 1941 to 1945, and many people lost their lives or were forced to work in concentration camps during these years. The story leading up to the Holocaust, how the terrible event affected people's lives, and how it came to and end are all topics that make this historic event worth learning about. While in prison, he wrote "Mein Kamf" (Which means "My Struggle"). "Mein Kamf" was a memoir and propaganda tract in which he predicted "the extermination of the Jewish Race in Germany" after a general European war. About ten years after he was released from prison, Hitler arose from obscurity to power after taking advantage of the weaknesses of his enemies. On January 20 of 1933, he was named chancellor of Germany. When President Paul von Hindenburg died in 1934, Adolf appointed himself as Germany's ruler. At first, the Nazis were only killing political opponents like Communists and/or Social Democrats, for which their harshest persecution was used. Many of the first prisoners sent to Dachau (The first official concentration camp opened near Munich in March of 1933) were communists. By July, the concentration camps run by the Germans held around 27,000 people in what they called "protective custody." The Nazis had huge rallies and acts of symbolism such as burning of books by Jews. During the years of 1933 to 1939, the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were able to leave Germany got out quickly, but many were left behind, and they lived their lives in a constant state of uncertainty and fear. During the fall of 1939, Hitler started the so–called Euthanasia Program. The Euthanasia Program allowed Nazi officials to select around 70,000 German citizens institutionalized for mental illnesses or disabilities. These Germans were to be gassed to death.
