10. Video Script
The idea for Me and my Vocation first came to me when I did my factual project at the beginning of this academic year, when I realised that the catholic
church was something I would like to make a documentary about. When I was planning to make modern sisters, the short documentary I made which
included interviews with nuns, I knew that it was going to be a short project and so I wouldn’t have enough time to create something as big as I wanted.
Therefore I had planned to create two different projects, both covering different subjects yet still about the Catholic Church. I used the contacts I had
made when filming Modern Sisters to help me get interviews with some nuns and a priest so I could interview them for my FMP and thus Me and my
Vocation was created. This time I wanted o create a project that discovered people who had taken up vocations in the church and why. I wanted to
understand why people would want to give up their life to something that so many people don’t even believe in. I also wanted to interview someone
young, so that my audience could relate to them, and so I contacted my old religious education teacher since he is a considerably younger than the other
interviewees and he was happy to help. Getting people involved was what I thought was going to be one of the hardest tasks however in reality was
simple.
When picking out whom I wanted to interview I felt that sister Agatha was a very interesting character since she had lived such an extraordinary life. Since
she had been brought up as part of the establishment and was resented to the king at a debutant ball at 16,and then became a nun, I knew was different
to other nuns. I also felt that father Thompson was a good candidate since he hadn’t gone through the usual path that the typical priest would have gone
down since he had previously been married and apart of the COE
I then started to do research and pre-production which were both long tasks. I knew that I needed to do deep research so that I handled this subject with
care as to not offend anyone. To do this I looked at other documentary makers like Louis theroux and more serious docu-series like the keepers to see
their techniques and I picked some from each so that I could pick one that worked best for mine. I then looked at viewing and rating figures to see how I
should resent my documentary and where it should go so that it could appeal to audience I intended it for. I then planned lots of schedules and kit
bookings so that I was very prepared. I was worried about appearing professional when interviewing people and so I made sure I dressed well and was on
top of everything so that I could make the best project I could. When it came to filming these interviews it was fairly straightforward since they were just
shot in a talking heads technique. The only issue when filming was my crew of which my one and only member pulled out very last minute and I had to
film one of the interviews alone, however in the end it all worked out okay. When filming the other interviews I had enlisted the help of another student
who became my sound assistant and we worked well together despite her not having done the job before. It was so important for me to make a good
impression on the interviewees, as I wanted them to think of this project with high standard and to think of me as a professional documentary maker.
The idea to create multiple different version of my project started when I was editing the raw footage. I knew that I wanted each person to b able to tell
their story yet for them to sill be involved and interlinked between each other. Therefore I decided to do 3 different types of documentary and make
them all available to the viewer, something which I believe is very modern and typical of new media, especially found on YouTube, that is aimed at my
target audience. Having the three shorter pieces meant that it was easy for people to consume the information during their busy lives and that was
something that was important to me.
The reason that I wanted to make this for a young audience was because I think that since a lot of people are quite liberal, they often ignore religion,
which has previously been a cornerstone of society throughout the ages. I thought that making this documentary I could enlighten people and help them
to, in the least, learn something new.
In the end I was so happy with the project as it came to be just as I had hoped. It looks and sounds professional and I am sure that it can help others to
learn something new.
