1. Appraisal – Waihi
College
In 2014 ERO released a report into school
appraisal.
It said…
“ERO found that only 20 percent of primary schools
and four percent of secondary schools had high
quality appraisal systems which contributed to
improvements in teacher capability and which
valued student outcomes.”

2. What Appraisal Should Be
• Built on solid foundation of respectful conversations among
trusted professionals.
• A regular part of the Waihi College’s culture.
• Focused on improvement.
• Centered on the learning of all our students.
• Human, honest, forward thinking and accountable.
• A unified system incorporating school wide objectives,
professional development and professional registration.
3. What Appraisal Shouldn’t Be
• Meaningless in content – you shouldn’t want your boxes
ticked.
• Forgotten between setting goals at the start of the year and
reviewing them at the end.
• Polishing your cricket ball.
• Big Brother.
• A competition between teachers.
4. John Hattie’s Research
• He found that most teachers ‘rate’
their effect – even with greatly
different techniques/styles.
• Hattie identified over 60 valid ways of
improving learning – plenty of ideas
to investigate/incorporate.
• “Know thy impact.”
