4. Definition of Cycloalkane
Are cyclic hydrocarbons, they are arranged in
the form of rings.
They are saturated. (single bonded)
They are found in nature or can be created
in the laboratory
The simplest is cyclopropane.
7. Properties of
Cycloalkanes
They have similar properties with alkanes but
they have higher boiling points, melting points.
And higher densities.
The melting point, the boiling point and the
density of cycloalkanes increase as the number of
carbons increases.
They are insoluble in water but soluble in many
organic solvents.
They have little biological activity
9. Naming of
Cycloalkanes
The naming of substituted
cycloalkanes follows the same
basic steps used in naming
alkanes.
1. Determine the parent chain.
2. Number the substituents of the
ring so that the sum of the
numbers is the lowest possible.
3. Name the substituents and
place them in alphabetical order.
