1. A2 Media Studies Evaluation
Question 2
How Effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Ethan James
2. What music videos did I study?
• For my project, I researched multiple music videos within the related genre
of dance/house.
• I researched David Guetta’s Titanium, Bastille’s Of The Night, Avicii’s The
Nights and Calvin Harris’s Pray to God.
• This research gave me the opportunity to study different music videos in
detail, looking at how they have used lighting, props, camera and what kind
of style of video they have chosen be it narrative, live or hybrid.
• After watching what professionals had done with their videos, my group
decided that David Guetta’s Titanium would suit our project best as we had
a lot of ideas we could use whereas we found ideas a bit difficult for the
other songs
3. How did my music video relate to the artist?
• My music video is a narrative style video and as such there are no
exact ways in which the video relates to the artist David Guetta
however my music video does bear resemblance to Guetta’s existing
music video of Titanium.
• My group chose to go against normal conventions of a music video by
not incorporating an artist into the video though this was justified as
we wanted to portray our interpretation of Guetta’s lyrics for
Titanium through a narrative only video.
4. What digipaks did I study
• During my research for my digipak I studied numerous existing digipaks,
Deadmau5’s For Lack of a Better Name, Ministry of Sound’s The Annual 2000 and
Calvin Harris’s Motion.
• The digipaks I researched differ slightly in how they visually appear.
• Ministry of Sound has no specific artist to represent as it is made up of a
collection of multiple artists so they have chosen to go with their logo on a bluish
purple background with the title and info below.
• Deadmau5’s For Lack of a Better Name chooses to go similar to ministry of sound
by placing Deadmau5’s logo on a black background, the colour of black makes the
turquoise mouse eyes and title really stand out.
• Calvin Harris has gone against the other two digipaks by putting what appears
water in a very slow motion capture as the background, which refers to the title
of the album Motion, apart from the background Harris had used a standard font
approach for the visual of titles and name.
5. Distribution – Where would I put my advert?
• There are various magazines in the specific genre, AskAudio, MixMag,
DJ and others.
• Advertising my magazine advert in any of these magazines would
create a considerable boost in the amount of audience attracted.
• Displaying my advert in a magazine not specific to music would also
benefit as it would reach a wider area further attracting an audience.
• Another area in which I could display my advert would be online
specifically Facebook, I say this as my advert is the right dimensions
for their advert posting, if successful this would create a boom in the
attraction of my target audience as you can choose what specific
audience you are aiming for.
6. Where would my digipak be sold ?
• My digipak would most likely be sold in retail shops like HMV and
WHSmith but also in widespread supermarkets like Tesco.
• My digipak could also be sold online at Amazon, Google, Spotify,
iTunes and other online sellers.
• By selling my digipak online I could market it through the use of
synergy and make use of media convergence
• By utilising these methods i will attract a wider field of audiences.
