2. Products and themes
• I created a music video in a pair with Maria Salemme
and by myself for the ancillary tasks I made a digipak
and a website.
• The theme of these products was in the video being
trapped in a relationship when you love them but also
hate what you’ve both become. As the themes in bold
are conveyed through the use of colour in some aspects
this can be seen in all three products.
• I was aiming to create a product with the the theme of
being trapped and then escaping and I think I did this
through the products.
3. Muse marketing
• I decided to look at Muse and their
marketing of the album Resistance as a
case study to learn from and consider the
links within my own work.
4. General themes
• The album is entitled resistance and
is based around the idea of fighting
against injustice. This theme is
displayed through the marketing with
reoccurring themes and artwork,
such as colours and symbols.
• Some themes being the use of
hexagons and butterflies. The use of
butterflies possibly suggesting the
idea of fighting for freedom and
gaining it.
• This is common within rock as it
appeals to the “fight against the
mainstream attitude of the fans.”
Even the fan art
displays themes of the
album marketing.
5. Font
• Across the products
the same bold font is
used that is used by
the title of the
album. This font is
used on the digipak,
DVD, and tour
posters. It is
generally always a
dark colour and
mostly a dark navy
blue.
6. Images
• Various different versions of the
hexagon art is used across clothing,
posters and single’s covers. The
butterflies can also be found on similar
products.
• On the digipak there is the image of a
man standing seeming looking up and
on his own. This further creates the
idea of the album being marketed as a
piece of rebellion and resistance
against society. This appeals to rock
fans as they tend to be against
mainstream society, so this is a good
marketing technique for their
audience.
7. Music videos & use of colour
• The lead single on the album entitled uprising creates
further the idea of the album being marketed as
rebellious or war related.
• Red is used across some of the videos two examples
would be resistance as the colours are generally very
sparse but the guitar and base are red, this being the
only bright/primary colour seen throughout the video.
The colour red is also highlighted through the video
for undisclosed desires. The is possibly due to red
being a colour associated with rebellion. Red is a
colour used on the album but is not highlighted like it
is in the videos.

9. Font
• I chose to use the same font across all
my products. This font was
Charlemagne Std Bold.I chose this font
as I felt it was suiting to the genre. I
also wanted to carry it across all my
products as this would help create a
well recognised brand for the product,
as can be seen from professional
products like Muse’s resistance using
the same font across their products. I
did not always use the same font
colour. However I did stick to the
palette of white, black or grey, so that it
was still easily identifiable as my
product. Also the colour was only not
used as white when it didn't show up
well on the image it was placed on.
10. Image use
• My images across my products were mainly photographs
except for my logo that I created in Photoshop. The use of
images showing the faces of the band would be typical as
it is likely that a record label would want their faces to be
shown in album release. Also the choice to use the band
playing the instruments was part of the marketing package
to emphasis the rock/grunge aspect of the band.
• My use of a logo was important as I had it feature on the
back of the digipak next to the record company logo which
is common of bands. I also had it feature on the website as
part of the shop on a T-shirt and a plectrum to create the
identity of the band. My choice to use of piece of artwork
as the logo came from Muse having artwork feature as part
of their merchandise and saw how that’s a good way to
build a band image so decided to incorporate that into my
own work.
11. Music videos & use of colour
• In the video we titled Monster as we wanted to
portray the darker sides of a relationship and of
people. Also as the song is about the darker
side of a person being a monster, we thought it
was fitting to name it that. Also as Paige was
the acting “monster” it helped to market the
idea of split personalities and having deeper
sides to oneself.
• In our video we used red as a highlighted
colour, this was due to red having connotations
of love, lust, passion and hate, all being themes
we wanted to convey in our music video. As we
knew we wanted to show these themes in my
research, seeing Muse and Royal Blood do this
through colour I thought this would be a good
way to do it with my own product.
12. Artists and Social media
• Artists often use social media to promote their own products
and keep their audience informed in what’s going on in that
specific artists world. Its a good way for artists to create a
web 2.0 kind of experience that makes celebrity culture more
interesting and can help build more fans and get people
exited.
• Muse have an instagram, twitter, Facebook and YouTube
pages. This is common and needed. The more fans are
involved and invested with the band the more profit can be
made. Also social media can be a cheap form of
advertisement. For example, Beyoncé didn't advertise her
latest album through the normal conventions of a release
date, she simply tweeted and received 828,773 copies of
"Beyonce" were sold worldwide in three days
13. Social media in my products
• I have used social media in my products. I have added
links to twitter, Facebook and Youtube on my site. I’ve
added links that all interlink to each product that is
online to create a larger community. It’s a way to add
extra photo’s, tell fans about release and send out
teaser info.
• I think it’s very important to involve social media in any
kind of product release. Social media is unavoidable
now and it’s marketing capability should be harnessed
not ignored.
• It’s been very good in linking my products, as my
website has links to social media and likewise with
social media to the website. This links all the products
up together to create one big web of all the products,
rather than several pieces of separate information, it is
available all together, all at once.
14. Synergy
• Synergy is doing the same thing across several products to create a easily recognisable
product. This can often be seen by bands having the same profile picture across all their
social media, and it often being the same picture as their current album cover or from the
same shoot.
• It’s very important when launching a marketing campaign that is a synergetic marketing
campaign. This is due to it creating a brand that helps to get people knowing the band, and
seeing the same marketing style everywhere. It’s harder to forget seeing something you
see everywhere than an image you see once and never again.
• I have used synergy in my own products. Such as using the image used as the website
banner on the twitter and youtube profile picture. I also used synergy in using the same
motifs across all my products, one example being my use of black and white being used in
all my products. I also had the band logo appear on the website as well as the digpak. This
can also be seen in the video being on the website, merchandise using images from
photoshoots of the digipak. There is also the ability to link to itunes and buy the song,
which is a form of synergy. Linking all the products in this way maximises profits which is
good for the band.
