The document provides details about the research and planning for a print magazine project. It includes research on existing magazines like Sports Illustrated, The Sporting Magazine, and Empire Magazine. It also includes mock-ups of a magazine cover, double-page spread, and website with reflections. The proposed magazine would be called "Sport Weekly" and focus on golf. It would target readers aged 14+ and feature professional golfers like Rory McIlroy and Stacy Lewis. The document outlines the planning, design ideas, and evaluation process for the different elements of the magazine.
3. Research
â Sports Illustrated- an American sports media franchise
owned by Time Inc. Its self-titled magazine has over 3 million
subscribers and is read by 23 million people each week,
including over 18 million men. It was the first magazine with
circulation over one million to win the National Magazine
Award for General Excellence twice. Its swimsuit issue,
which has been published since 1964, is now an annual
publishing event that generates its own television shows,
videos and calendars.
4. â The Sporting Magazine- (1793â1870) was the first English sporting periodical to devote
itself to every type of sport, thus providing the historian with a reasonably
comprehensive source. Its subtitle was "Monthly Calendar of the Transactions of the
Turf, the Chase and Every Other Diversion Interesting to the Man of Pleasure,
Enterprise, and Spirit".
â The Sporting Magazine was established in 1793. The magazine was published
in London, but was able to offer extensive coverage of events nationally because the
editor John Wheble, had established a wide-ranging network of informants, writers and
contributors throughout the shires.
5. Empire Magazine
â Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media
of Hamburg based Bauer Media Group. From the first issue in July 1989, the
magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap. Bauer
purchased Emap Consumer Media in early 2008. It is the biggest selling film
magazine in the United Kingdom and is also published in the United States,
Australia, Turkey, Russia, Italy and Portugal. Empire organises the annual
Empire Awards which were sponsored by Sony Ericsson, and from 2009
sponsored by Jameson.[2] The awards are voted for by readers of the
magazine.
6. Front page
The colour scheme of this cover Is red, white and yellow. Red is known to
draw the eyes of reader so a lot of people cover their advertisements with
it for that reason.
The font used is clear and bold and gives a clear message on what the
magazine is about.
A lot of magazines use eye catching images to draw audiences in. on this
magazine an image of a friendly face is enough for someone to buy it.
The magazine also draws readers in by promising them prizes and tips
on how to be better at golf.
The writing style is defiantly catered towards older readers.
7. Double Page Spread
Like on the front page, red is used to draw
the reader in.
Images are also on the page because with
too many words on the page the reader
could loose interest in the article.
In this double page, the photos are
hand/digitally drawn, this gives the magazine
more of a comic book touch.
The style of writing caters to a younger
audience, most likely teens
8. Website
The website here have very dull background colours
which donât really catch the eye of anyone on the
website. Though the images used within the articles
do have bright colours which are quite eye catching.
The font used is very plain and easy to read, which is
a good thing for this specific website because the
people reading it tend to be older, that also ties in with
the language being used. The people who write these
articles used words or phrases to draw in readers.
9. Front Page
Looking at this front cover the reader that can already tell that
the brand is well known due to being able to cover up part of
their title.
The cover includes. The company may have put the Harry Potter
stars on the cover to draw in more readers. This could also be
the case by promising something âexclusiveâ.
10. Double Page Spread
The magazine has been
designed with a style that is from
the Harry Potter movies (The
Daily Prophet) which will draw in
a lot of HP fans. A lot of images
also has been used which shows
scenes from the movies, this
could be a way of not boring the
reader by overloading the page
with hundreds of words. The
colours here are quite dark but
they do link in with the HP theme
of the page.
11. Website
A red bordered title draws people attention to it
and may make them want to read on. The
website also does this by highlighting important
information in red.
12. Front Page
The front cover is very eye catching due to the colours used.
They all fit around a new album by the band featured on the
front cover. The neon coloured titles draws eyes.
This style of magazine is catered towards adolescents.
By using a popular band as the front cover it may draw in
other readers who donât usually buy the magazine.
13. Double Page Spread
The colours and fonts used
represent the style of the
magazine. Here the colours
red and yellow are loud and
draw in the eyes of readers.
14. Website
This website draws people in by using
a popular figure. The website here have
very plain but bright background colours
which catch the eye of anyone on the
website. The images used within the
articles do have bright colours which are
also quite eye catching.
The age range for Kerrang is 15-34
which ties in with the language being
used. The people who write these
articles used words or phrases to draw
in specific readers.
15. Summery of research
â My research shows the different styles of covers, double page spreads and
website designs. This will help me when it comes to designing my own fp, dps
and website because I can see what draws in people attention and what
doesnât.
â My research also shows the history of some magazines, some are so popular
they have been around for a while and some have stopped production. This
shows me the kind of things I should include if I would want the magazine to
stay popular.
â It also shows what style of magazines are made for each gender and age. This
will help me when it comes to colour design and layout.
â Most magazines use popular celebrity faces on the covers to draw in readers. I
will be doing this for my own magazine.
16. Proposal
â Working Title:
â Sport Weekly, get up and move, the good life.
â Audience:
â My magazine will cater mostly towards older readers, starting at 14+. I chose this
age range because the language that I will be using will be at a higher level, I also
chose it because of the age range of people that will actually read a golfing
magazine will be older. The magazine will be aimed at both genders, though due to
sport is very male dominated a lot of the sporting figures will most likely be male.
The sport I will be focusing the most on is golf, this sport is extremely male
dominated and comes across as a wealthy sport to play seeing as a good game of
golf at top courses can range anywhere between ÂŁ80-ÂŁ350 for 18 holes lasting an
average of 4 hours. I think that the magazine will cater to grade B which is middle
class and categorised to be Intermediate managerial, administrative or professional
which makes up 23% of the population. The Lifestyle / Psychographics of the
readers will most likely be Achiever; Most likely a serious business person who
wants power and material wealth. Advertising messages need to be expressed
quickly and focus on individuality, money and power.
17. â Rationale:
â This year the skills I have developed are learning how to use various editing
software, such as Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. This will help when it comes to
editing the magazine. I chose media to study because I want to work in some form
of media when I leave college. The subjects I study havenât influenced my choice for
this project. I chose sport/golf because itâs very important in my family so I have
required a lot of knowledge about the sport without actually playing it much myself.
â Project Concept:
â The idea for my magazine is sport. I chose this because I think there will be a lot of
information for when I research and sports magazines are quite popular. In my
magazine Iâm going to include well known faces of the sport such as Rory McIlroy,
Sergio GarcĂa and Stacy Lewis. In my magazine I would like to include the story of
Stacy Lewis because it is relatable to me and is an extremely hidden issue. The
research I will have to do will include information about the players I have chosen,
such as the trophies they have won, interesting stories about them and general
information. I need to make sure when including the facts about the players are
correct and are from a reliable source. I also need to research different fonts that I
will use. For my magazine I wonât go for a very stylish font because I want the font to
be bold text at the top of the cover so that it is clear to read and is easily seen in a
row of magazines. I also need to think about the colour scheme that I will use. For
this I would like to use gender natural colours due to not aiming it at any specific
genders
18. â Evaluation plan:
â I will evaluate my work by breaking down specific parts of the cover and front
page. I will look at how it catered to my chosen audience. I would also look at
what I would change if I was to create it again. I will be talking about how I can
improve the written work and the production work.
19. Time Management Plan

26. Front Page Reflection
â For my front page I didnât want to much on the cover because I didnât want to
hide the background photo. The background photo I used had one specific area
in focus (where the ball is) I did this because I wanted the background as close
to one colour as possible, making it easier to read text on it.
â If I was to create the cover again I would change the style of the text to create a
better, more appealing look. I would also include more photos and text.
32. Copy
â Stacy Lewis is an American professional golfer on the U.S. LPGA Tour who also suffers
from scoliosis. Stacyâs scoliosis was discovered when she was 11 during a school
screening exam. When she bent forward an asymmetry was discovered in her back. X-
rays and an exam performed by a paediatric spine deformity specialist confirmed she had
scoliosis. She was prescribed a back brace which she wore for roughly 18 hours a day
(even while she slept) for 7 ½ years until she turned 18. Unfortunately, like most brace
wearers, once out of the brace her curvature continued to progress to the point where
surgery was recommended to prevent further progression.
â Before the surgery recommendation, Stacy had accepted a scholarship to the University of
Arkansas. After the Arkansas golf team coach told her they would hold her spot, Stacy
went ahead with the surgery. Because Stacy was a golfer the surgeon performed a
âmuscle sparing surgery that addressed the deformity from the front of the spine and fused
fewer levels of the lumbar spineâ. A single rod and 5 screws were inserted into her spine.
â The âPre-Operation X-rayâ shows that the curvature was not corrected with bracing. The
âPost-Operation X-rayâ shows the titanium rod and 5 screws that were implanted in her
back.
â After her operation she was required to spend 3 more months in a brace and receive
another 6 months of golf rehab. Stacy missed her first college golf season while recovering
from the surgery. In 2004, Stacy regained her spot on the University of Arkansas golf team.
33. â When she graduated in 2008, Stacy had 12 NCAA wins including the 2007 NCAA
individual championship. In addition, while playing as an invited student during the
inaugural LPGA NW Arkansas championship, Stacy âwonâ the tournament only to have it
declared unofficial when they cancelled the rest of the event due to rain. After graduating,
Stacy played in her final amateur event, the Curtis Cup at the Old Course in St. Andrews,
Scotland. During that tournament Stacy helped the United States team win and set a
record to become the first player in Curtis Cup history to record 5 wins against 0 losses.
â In the summer of 2008, Stacy turned pro in time for the US Womenâs Open and took the
lead in the worldâs most prestigious womenâs tournament after 3 rounds. She played in
the final group in the final round before finishing in third place. In the winter of 2008,
Stacy officially earned her LPGA âTour Cardâ by winning the LPGA Qualifying Tournament
by 3 strokes over the strongest Q-school field in LPGA history. In spring 2011, Stacy
secured her position as one of the best golfers in the world by winning a major
championship, the Kraft Nabisco, and outplaying the #1 player in the world.
â Today, Stacy plays a full schedule on the LPGA Tour. She regularly does stretches and
strengthening exercises. She is a spokesperson for the Scoliosis Research Society and
as such is an inspiration to kids around the world who are going through similar
experiences with scoliosis.
35. Double Page Spread Reflection
â For my double page spread I wanted a lot of information for people to read,
though looking back at it I think it would have been better for the reader to have
larger text with less words. I would also include more images.
â If I was to create this again I would use a story that was relatable to a more vast
community not just 2/3% of the population.

44. Website Reflection
â For my website I wanted to include as much as I could about different players
and courses.
â If I was to create the website again I would include more information on world
wide players so that my website is open to more people.
45. Evaluation
When I was first assigned this project I began brainstorming ideas on what my three project ideas
would be. I was originally going to create something to do with music or film, but I wanted to
experiment and do something different so I decided to do my project on golf. The reason I chose to do
that is because I know about the sport very well due to most of my family playing it.
I will be evaluating my work by breaking down specific parts of the cover and front page. I will look at
how it catered to my chosen audience. I would also look at what I would change if I was to create it
again. I will be talking about how I can improve the written work and the production work.
For my front page I wanted a full page of text and images because I wanted to
give the reader as much information as possible. During production I realized
that the cover of the magazine didnât have to be so full with information
otherwise it was pointless people buying it.
When I planned to create my font page, I didnât want the background to be just
one photo. I changed my idea because I didnât like the way that it looked after
it was created, that being it looked to blocky.
Once I finalised my idea I needed to decide how I would put it together and
what images and text I would use. Because my magazine is going out to older
people I didnât want to overload the cover with a lot of text and images. I did
however want to include something that was catch someone's eye if it was just
sitting on a shelf.
Print
46. I included a red shadow around my main title to make it stand out on the magazine cover. I also had import
phrases coloured red to make them stand out as well. This could also draw in other people who wouldnât
usually buy the magazine by seeing a name of someone they know or are interested in.
When creating the cover of the magazine I did come across a few issues, the main one being choosing an
image that worked for the background. I originally had a background of a ball on a green. This image didnât
work with either white or black text because both colours would end up blending into the background. To
settle this issue I ended up using a image that wasnât to dark that it covered up the text.
Another issue I faced was when it came to gathering the pictures to use for
the front cover. Due to timing, I didnât have long to get the pictures I needed.
To resolve this issue, I had to edit the photos I did get in Photoshop for them
to look not as dark and more appealing.
The target audience I chose for this project is 14+, though content and style
of the magazine caters more towards older readers.
As golf is seen as a male dominant sport I wanted to include an inspirational
female player on the cover for women to show that girls can play too.
If I had this task again I would improve the final product by changing the font
style I used to something more appealing, something that would draw the
attention of potential buyers. I would probably use a different photo as the
background so that any text on the cover would be easier to read. I would
also edit the photo I used of Stacy Lewis to blend into the background more
to give the magazine a more professional look.
47. Due to the project having a lot of written work as well as production I had to manage my time very
well. When it came to managing time for the front page I had to take into consideration all the
different things I needed to do before I could create my final product. Things such as panning and
taking photos. Since I had to take my photos on a golf course I had to ask for permission before
taking any. Because of this, it affected my time management plan. I had originally chosen to get my
photos done on the second week, but due for the allowance of myself being able to take photos on
the course it was pushed back to week three, which meant I had less time to create my front page
then I had originally planned to have.
Whilst creating my front page, I learnt that I should plan ahead if I need something important doing.
Also I learnt that when it comes to planning I should include more detail because it makes it easier
for myself during production.
Double Page Spread
For my Double Page Spread, I wanted to include a story/ article that is rarely talked about in any
sports magazine. I wanted it to be informative and something that a decent amount of people can
relate to. I also didnât want the story to only relate to male golfers. To make sure I had all of my point
within the article, I chose to tell the story of golf pro Stacy Lewis. She is a world wide champion who
sufferers from a illness called scoliosis which is curvature of the spine. Stacy Lewisâs story is an
inspiration to young players, showing them that you can still do what you love even if you have a
disability. When planning what I would write for the article, I had to take into consideration that I only
had two page
When I had planned to create my Double Page Spread I didnât want an image as the background, I
wanted just a solid colour because I thought that it would be easier to read the article. When
creating the mock Double Page Spread I did put a plain background with multiple images. I thought
that it didnât look very appealing because it looked boring and very unprofessional. There I decided
48. text bold and cut down the amount of photos I used
throughout the article. Another reason I decided to change my
design of my Double Page Spread is because it looks more
like a school essay than magazine pages.
For this specific article it is aimed mostly towards younger
readers, though the language used is semi advanced.
When creating my final product of my Double Page Spread I
wanted the pages to stand out very well. I decided to add an
image as the background.
When choosing an image I had to take into consideration the colour clashes, so I had to consider where
white/black parts of the photo would be so none of the text clashed. To do this I changed opacity of the photo
to about 50% which gave the image a white finish which showed up the black text really well.
Due to the story that I used I would like it to help young people who are interested in the sport to come out of
their shell and do what they love. I hope it would affect people in a positive way and spread awareness of a
extremely unknown but quite common.
If I was to create the Double Page Spread again, I would not have as much plain text because it could get
boring for the person reading. I would include a larger, more informative title. I would of also included other
subtitles which would have divided the page up better giving the reader a better understanding of what each
section is about.
When creating the Double Page Spread I often referenced back to my time management plan. I stayed on
track for most of my plan when it came to production. The majority of my time was wasted when it came to
choosing a background image and choosing how the layout of the text would look like when its printed.
During the production of the Double Page Spread I have learnt that research is very important before creating
49. The research allows me to look at and compare to other magazines, seeing what works to draw in and
audience and what doesnât .
Overall I am happy with how my final product came out because its
easy to read and I believe is very informative. I am also pleased
with how the background image came out because its easier to
read, and looks more appealing.
I learnt when creating the Double Page Spread that it is important
to include a story that is informative in some way to everyone
reading it.
When writing about my Double Page Spread I found that it was
best to try write as much detail as possible, so that if someone
read it they could create what I have quite easily.
Website
When I was first deciding what my website would look like, I wanted it to have easy navigational points.
Meaning that any buttons that will be used throughout my website will be easy to locate. I decided to do this
because the website can then be open to all age ranges due to its simplicity.
Due to not being able to get my photos for my website until around week 3 my time management plan was
already off. I decided to create my website anyway using photos I got of the internet so I could place where I
wanted my text to be. My website took the longest to make because it needed editing to look more like an
actually website. Because of this most of my time went into creating the website which wasnât good when it
came to creating the other products because I left myself with not a lot of time to create them.
When designing what I wanted my website to look like, I didnât want anything too fancy and complicated
giving that it is only a sporting website. One of the most important things I looked into was what colours I
50. public eye, golf is seen as a very male dominant sport. I wanted to use gender natural colours so that
it can cater to anyone. When planning my website I also looked into what content I would include. I
decided that I would include players, courses, clothing, extract from the magazine and a contact
page. So each section had something for each stereotypical gender.
During production one big problem I faced was on the website I used to create my own website crashed a
lot. This slowed down production by at least a few days because the website crashing happened at least
once a week, if this was to happen the website would not work for the rest of the day. To resolve this
issue I used the time to work on my other productions and written work.
Looking at my finished website, I hope that the site would help people find out more information on
content listed before.
The issues I faced during the production of the website was finding a good website to create my own
website on. I found that wix wasnât reliable because it didnât include a lot of features that I needed when
Before I created my finalised website I made a test website.
This allows me to test different designs of the website, colours
and fonts.
I was aiming my website at older males specifically because
that is what gender and age is stereotypically seen as in golf.
To make sure the website caters to these specific points I
made sure that the photos werenât to bright and that the text is
easy to read.
51. final website. I ended up using website builder. This was good for the majority of production
because it was reliable for the majority of the time. To resolve this issue, anytime the website
crashed I would do other work.
If I was to create the website again I would change the design of the home page. I would add in
rotating images of what the website has to offer so people can see what the website has to offer
before they navigate through the rest of the website.
I would improve my written work by explaining what I did in more detail so that it is easy to
understand and be recreated again without much issue.
Though creating the website I have learnt that it is very important to manage time well otherwise
production would be a struggle. I also learnt that its important to make sure that the websites I
research was genuine and not created by unreliable sources, otherwise the information I have used
would not then be correct.
