The document discusses conventions of Esquire and FHM magazines. Esquire magazines typically feature lifestyle and fashion articles and stories, with a large serif title on the cover displaying a celebrity in a sophisticated outfit. The cover image takes up the whole page, showing older models aged 35-55. Subtitles provide insight into the issue's content. Esquire uses a darker color scheme and formal language to appeal to an older audience. FHM features younger models aged 20-35 dressed in revealing outfits to draw in a younger demographic, using bright colors and sans serif fonts for a modern look focused on fashion tips.
2. Conventions
• Esquire magazines typically contain articles on lifestyle tips, fashion tips and reader stories.
• Large serif title/headline at the top of the cover page of the magazines.
• Large mid shot-longshot of a celebrity wearing a very smart, mature looking outfit such as a suit. The Celebrities are
represented stereotypically as they look very confident due to their body language. The males look very masculine in
their suits and the females look very feminine and classy which portrays both as being very rich and shows off their
lavished lifestyles.
• Image takes up the whole page. Used to show the whole outfit. The models are usually aged 35-55 which I would say is
the target audience for these types of fashion magazines.
• Subtitles down the two sides of the page giving a brief insight into what the magazine covers in the issue.
• Colour scheme usually consists of 2-3 darker colours making the magazine looking a lot more mature.
• Exclusive tips and quotes from articles used as a selling point in the magazine.
3. • The models on the front cover are all looking straight at the camera (direct address). This is done to capture peoples attention when they
are on the stand in the shop as it has the effect of the models looking at you.
• The models wear a lot of makeup to make them look more glamorous and attractive which appeals to the audience as they want to look like
the models.
• As well as makeup, editing would have been used to get rid of the models imperfections.
• High key lighting is used on the cover to highlight the model’s look and make them stand out.
• There is also a ratio of copy and photography used, the copy usually covers the blank spaces of the image in columns down the two sides of
the image.
• The language used is generally more of a formal register than FHM magazines, this is due to the difference in target audiences.
• Digital manipulation is used in both magazines, in Esquire it is used mainly to the photo colour to make it look a lot more mature and old
fashioned such as black and white filter.
4. FHM
Conventions
• FHM shows much younger models aged 20-35. They are dressed in very revealing outfits and look very sexualised.
Due to the models being a lot younger, this draws in a much younger target audience compared to ESQUIRE aged 20-35.
• There are a lot of bright colours used in FHM magazines such as yellow, pink and orange. This makes the magazine look a
lot more modern and younger.
• The articles in the magazines are usually more about fashion, exclusive tips from models.
• Large sans serif font is used as it makes it look a lot more modern which suits the younger demographic.
• T
